at 6:00 this morning, we continue tracking breaking news out of southern california. 13 people dead, including this sheriff's deputy and the gunman. >> it happened at the borderline bar & grill in thousand oaks. a cop hrar bar for pepperdine and cal lutheran students. first, we want to check weather and traffic. hi, mike. >> all right. this all has to do with the fire danger. let's jump in and show you the red flag warning and what you are going to see are areas have been added, unfortunately. the santa cruz mountains until 7:00 tomorrow morning. 25 more hours of critical fire

conditions. let's look at the planner for today. winds gusting to 26 in the east bay hills. they will just get faster. that will push temperatures into the upper 60s by noon. we will stay in the upper 60s at the coast. the rest of us mid and upper 70s. back down at 7:00 to 57 to 61. just now getting into some of the fastest winds of this critical fire event. ing careful out there. here's alexis. >> taking a look at the roads, two new issues to talk about. one walnut creek, 680, treat boulevard. a hit and run collision. everything is off on the shoulder. the person that was hit is okay. so we did have a pretty large emergency response on the right-hand side. i don't think they will have to take any lanes away. we definitely have heavy traffic in the area. i will keep an eye on that. that should start to recover shortly. just hearing about a new crash westbound 580, the connector to northbound 238, a collision involving a semi. i'll get more information and

have another update at 6:10 >> thank you, alexis. law enforcement has identified the shooter in the thousand oaks bar. they vice president released the person's name yet. >> first reports came out 11 listen 30 at the borderline bar & grill in thousand oaks, 40 miles west of los angeles. abc 7 news reporter katie has the details. >> reporter: investigators have recovered a .45 caliber glock handgun. they have not released his identity to the public. the 11 victims from the club. sheriff's deputies are still working to notify their families before releasing their names. we have heard from people axley awaiting word on their loved ones. here is a picture of cody kauffma kauffm kauffman. his family is still looking for him. people are being treated for injuries.

there are 13 dead, including a sheriffs sergeant and the gunman. the 11 others are yet to be a ventura county sheriffs argument and chp officer arrived 11:20 last night, with minutes of the shooting. borderline bar & grill is a country bar in thousand oaks. srb sergeant ron helus was shot. hundreds were injure the popular bar. this witness watched the shooter walk in and apparently target employees. >> i had a clear line of sight at the front desk.raisinaybe

to put money on the counter like everyone does. the first gunshot went off. i thought maybe somebody was playing a were prank with an m-80. i saw him fire at the girl at the front desk. >> you noticed it sounds like pretty quickly. did everybody at the bar realize what was going on? >> it took a couple seconds for everyone to realize it. as soon as i saw he had a gun, i knew what was going on. >> as you can imagine, the nightclub was packed and the music was loud. we have a photo of the ventura county sheriffs sergeant who was killed as he responded to the shooting. this is sergeant ron helus, a 29-year veteran of the department. he is survived by a wife and son and was planning to retire just next year. survivors are being taken to a reunification center. many are at the hospital. people broke out windowsh bar stools and climbed over broken glass to escape. there are 10 to 15 people injured. family members are arriving on

i dropped to the floor. >> we were trying to keep ourselves covered and i looked behind me and there was spark and smoke started coming out. somebody said that's a smoke bomb. so as soon as we all saw that we jumped up. and i don't -- i don't think -- i thank god i was able to run out the door. i ran out and was in the parking lot. i was lucky enough to get out alive. >> we're thinking of all of those that were there, including yourselves and those that were killed and the sheriff's deputy abo t bartender atas helpi.

can you just describe how people were doing the best they could, taylor, to help in that as much. >> so while we were all dog piled over at the side, there were multiple men that got on their knees and pretty much blocked all of us with their back to the shooter, ready to take a bullet for any one of us. and just the amount of people that made sure everyone got out okay or if they were out, they made sure they went to every single person and asked if they were okay, if they kneeled a phone to call their family. just in general any way they could help. it was awesome. >> the young women were separated from some of their other friends during all of that chaos at the time of their interview with gma, unfortunately, they were not sure if all their friends were okay. >> the same fear set in for il trying to

escape the hai heroism that too place. the men blocking themselves between themselves and the shooter and willing to take a bullet if he came that way. >> they were young, college students like we saw the girls. this is something that will be with them for the rest of their lives, whether they made it out or or they have a friend inside the bar. family still trying to find some of their loved ones now. we will go to kabc. they have been covering this throughout the morning. non-stop breaking news there. >> they know what's going to happen. unfortunately, this has played out many times. and we know what needs to be there, how we need to handle this. there's only so much you can do to really soften the blow of when you find out something like this. that's why they do that is to

have that place away from where it happened, away from where operations are being conducted so they can deal with the parents, and others trying to find their loved ones or children. >> there is a great deal of organization and planning that goes into this when they are trying to keep control. and then keep the actual scene pristine so they can go in there and get the information they need and try to solve this. also, sergeant helus, remember in the beginning he went in immediately with the chp offi r officer. that has changed from years ago at columbine when they wouldn't immediately go in. tell us why that has changed. >> in active shooter situations, the first thing you have to do is go out and eliminate the threat, if you will. in columbine, the old procedure was set up a perimeter and then

threat. what has changed over the years is when you have an active shooter, every officer is told go in there, eliminate the threat. and that is so important. because in columbine, even as they were going in there, they would sometimes stop and deal with people. >> okay. we were just listening to kabc, our sister station in los angeles, talking to a former law enforcement official about the different tactics that law enforcement use as to how they organize themselves in a situation like this. >> we are constantly updating on all our social media platted forms and abc7news.com.

good morning, guys. this is simply a e. this shooting started last night around 11:20. witnesses say that gunman, a 29-year-old walked into the borderli borderline pwbar & grill behinds a couple blocks. we're pushed back. this is a very popular country

western bar. it allows people under 21 to go in on a wednesday night. it's college night. they were line dancing, playing pool. they say at first they thought there were firecrackers. smoke started spreading. they believe the suspect threw a smoke bomb and then started firing. some people had the wherewithal to pick up chairs and break windows. we're standing next to a golf course. they saw teenagers running down the golf course, bleeding, calling for 911. there happened to be members of law enforcement in this area at the time of the shooting. one sergeant ron word for the ventura county sheriff's department. he raced towards the gunfire right before he went in. he called his wife, told her that he loved her, and then raced inside. he was shot multiple times. he was killed. he died at a local hospital. 12 people killed. the gunman as well was killed. it is unclear if he was shot by

authorities or took his own life. we know that he was 29 years old. apparently he drove his mother's car to the bar here and then went inside. authorities now looking into his background. looking for that motive. at this point it's unclear. we still have families here hours after this shooting. standing here, they have been to all the local hospitals. they have called all the hotlines. they keep looking at their phones, willing those phones to ring. at this point they are staying silent. you are starting to realize which families have lost their loved ones out here this morning. guys? >> very sad scene. what about the police investigation behind you? are you seeing anything new happening as far as the fbi investigation and the sheriff department's investigation? >> you pretty much have every legal department here, fbi, atf,

nightclub in thousand oaks. >> ka bc has been been been been >> brand, thank you so much. a scene of great emotion there. as she was saying, right now there are so few confirmed details. people are at the bar and patrons who were killed. the first person identified was sergeant ron helus. the press conference at 2:45 a.m. we watched it live as at ventura county identified one of the victims. highway patrol officer and bordy heard shots being fired and felt there might be additional

victims inside. upon going through the front door, the sheriffs sergeant was struck multiple times with gunfire. the highway patrol officer stepped back and secured the perimeter until additional units arrived. and he rescued the sheriffs sergeant out of the line of gunfire. they found 11 victims that had been killed. the suspect, who we believe was the only suspect, was dead inside. >> okay. you are watching live coverage from our sister station in los angeles. it happened in thousand oaks, about 11:30 last night. thousand oaks about 40 miles west of los angeles. 13 people killed, including the gunman. 12 one of them a deputy sergeant with the ventura county sheriff's department. >> everybody calling him a hero for running in while everyone else was running out.

officer and service sergeant respond to do borderline bar & grill. we learned the shooter is believed to be a white man w who 29 years old. they have recovered a glock handgun. the de andxcednfe.'s unclear i d deputy's fire. sergeant ron helus was struck. the chp officer pulled him out of the club but he died at the hospital. of the 13 total people dead, 11 are incident victims who were in the club at the time of the shooting. the sheriff's deputies are still working to notify the families of the victims before releasing their names. the ventura county sheriff choked up this morning as he talked about his friend, the sergeant who died heroically. >> sergeant helus died at the -- uh.

some cover. i looked up and he was moving to the right. he shot the doorman, bouncer, just a young man. and then he shot the cashcashie just a young girl. then he started moving to the right. he wasn't looking at us. then he went into the office where all the cash and stuff is. he didn't say anything at all. he just started shooting. i should have stayed. until he changed his clip. but i was worried about my boy. but i should have stayed. i apologize to anybody who got hurt. i'm sorry. >> it's fine. there is not much you could have done in a situation like that. >> they're all young. i'm 56. i lived a life. they're all young. this shouldn't have happened to them.

it was just some lowlife taking lives that shouldn't have been taken. you can hear the emotion, the agony that he had not being able to help as many people as he might like. the father heard the gunman pause and reload the gun. eventually he and his stepson left the bar. they came out of the front door where the shooter went in. he said he wishes he had stayed to help more people to safety. obviously very grateful that he and his son are okay this morning. >> we spoke with abc news reporter alex stone on the phone an hour ago. >> he was outside the bar in thousand oaks where many families are still right now waiting for information about loved ones who were there during the shooting. >> reporter: a number of family members have been showing up here outside the borderline bar & grill trying to get some information on their loved ones. and they don't know if their loved ones are in there or not. they knew they were coming here last night and they haven't heard from them since. it could be an issue of not

being able to communicate with their loved one. but they're looking for information. we have also seen that from college friends who say they knew their buddy was coming lear last night or they were with them last night at this bar and they haven't seen them since and they haven't been able to talk to them. there is a lot of emotion here. there is a family reunification center set up. they are trying to reunite the family members and friends with those who are inside, but it is a long process. >> okay. and we have been hearing that throughout the morning as folks go there to try to find their loved ones. a lot of people unaccounted for this morning. that has been really tough. that waiting process is very difficult. right now we have more breaking news this. the the i.d. of the shooter. new information from our producer. they have identified -- abc news has identified the suspect as 29-year-old david e. long. we don't know a whole lot about

this just in to the abc 7 newsroom. governor brown is responding to the deadly mass shooting in thousand oaks that left 13 people dead. >> the statement that he just released said, quote, our hearts ache today for the victims of this heinous act and our deepest condolences are with the thousand oaks community and those who lost friends and loved ones. we are grateful for law enforcement and others, including ventura county sheriffs sergeant ron helus, who took heroic action to save lives last night >> kabc has been on the air all night covering this breaking news story. let's check in right now. >> here at the reunification center, the sheriff's department has pushed the media back so to speak from the doors. the sheriff's department, mind you, has never seen so much

emotion come from deputies. they are working through this while they also lost one of their own. sergeant helus was killed in the shooting, one of the first responders. as we spoke with the sergeant earlier live on the air, just mentioning his name, he broke down into tears. again, they are pushing through. they are trying to get us answers. we will bring them to you as soon as we get any confirmation with names. i can't tell you the number of people who continue to come up to me wondering about the bouncer at the bar of grill. i can't get a hold of them. i can't give them the answers. they're at the mercy of the investigation. bella gains borough. her friends think she was there. she goes every wednesday. she was not answering her phone either. these are the sto agony we are seeing every hour here as people come looking for answers, phillip and leslie. >> okay. brandy, thank you very much. the emotion won't get any

millions of dead trees, extreme winds, and leading scientists say there will be even more dangerous fires in the years ahead. our weather is becoming more extreme, and we all need to work together to keep our neighborhoods safe. i'm lisa veliz waweru from pg&e. at pg&e, we are accelerating our forest management work in high fire-threat areas, removing dead trees, trimming branches and creating 12-foot safety clearances around power lines. as part of our community wildfire safety program, we are implementing additional safety measures, including a 24-hour wildfire safety operation center, new early warning weather stations, and stronger power lines in high fire-threat areas. like cutting back vegetation around your home, having the right emergency plan, and signing up for safety alerts.
