7:14 am
that president trump wanted jeff sessions gone but this one happened so fast, just hours after the midterm elections as you said that it surprised even those in the president's own inner circle. with tears in his eyes jeff sessions waving good-bye at a justice department sendoff, shaking hands with the man replacing him just hours after the attorney general was fired by president trump. his letter spelling it out. dear mr. president, at your request, i am submitting my resignation. sources tell abc news the request didn't come from the president himself but rather his chief of staff, john kelly, in a phone call first thing after election day. the president was asked about sessions' fate shortly before it became public. >> i'd rather answer that at a little bit different time. >> reporter: one of the president's earliest supporters, sessions infuriated his boss by recusing himself from the russia probe two years ago. after that sessions became one of the president's favorite targets.
7:15 am
>> he took the job and then he said i'm going to recuse myself. i said, what kind of a man is this? >> reporter: now leading the justice department, sessions' former chief of staff matt whitaker. the president tweeting, he will serve our country well. whitaker now in charge of the special counsel's probe, an investigation he has publicly criticized. he even mused how an a.g. could end it. >> i could see a scenario where jeff sessions is replaced with a recess appointment and that attorney general doesn't fire bob mueller but he just reduces the budget so low that his investigation grinds to almost a halt. >> reporter: this morning from democrats, outrage. the senate minority leader demanding that whitaker recuse himself. >> it would create a constitutional crisis if this were a prelude to ending or greatly limiting the mueller investigation. >> reporter: the bombshell coming less than two hours after the president ended a combative press conference about the midterms.
7:16 am
president trump going at it with this reporter. >> that's enough. >> reporter: insulting this reporter from japan. >> say hello to shinzo. i don't -- i really don't understand you. >> reporter: yeah, it was quite a pretty surreal event. back to the white house, there are expected to be more staff shakeups to come, both in the west wing and the cabinet, and the president is losing senior aides and cabinet members faster than any president in recent history, george. >> as you say more to come. cecilia vega, thanks very much. let's bring in our chief legal analyst dan abrams for more. matt whitaker in charge of the russia investigation right now but he is going to have to have his appointment reviewed, his participation reviewed by ethics officials. the fact that he has spoken out on the investigation before he had the job and his connections to a witness, sam clovis, is that enough to conflict him out? >> probably not, but it will be certainly in a closer call. remember, he is the acting attorney general right now so he doesn't have to get the full confirmation from the senate,
7:17 am
et cetera. >> 210 days. >> exactly. >> but if you listen to what he said publicly, this was like an audition tape to become president trump's attorney general. everything he has said publicly supports exactly what the president's position has been on the investigation into his own campaign. so this isn't just consistent with positions the president has taken, this is about consistency with the positions the president has taken about the investigation into him. so i think you have to keep it clear that that's what we're talking about here. everything from the meeting with don junior, with the russians, to the scope of this investigation, to whether there should have been a special counsel in the first place, to whether hillary clinton should have been indicted. >> if he wanted to steer, hinder or stop the investigation what could he do? >> he likely is not going to end it but he could hinder it. he could -- as he suggested he could and try to starve it of funds. he could also say no if they want to seek an indictment.
7:18 am
he could say, no, i don't think you should. >> so far the white house says he won't do it. we will watch. dan abrams, thanks very much. >> during the press conference many of the reporters were pressing him about the cabinet changes, about that there were going to be not just cabinet changes -- >> he said he didn't want to go there. >> right. and then soon after, the firing. let's go to ginger now. the coldest air of the season for so many. >> yes, i'm talking about 20 degrees below average. also going to come with snow in a lot of place, missoula, montana, the roads a mess, st. francis, kansas, and now chicago will get it by tomorrow morning. rain on the east coast. your local weather in 30 seconds. first, though, the snowy cities brought to you by starbucks.
