retire next year and who is on the phone with his wife. thanks for joining he was gunned down inside the borderline bar and grill. new at this hour a second victim has been identified. you saw the father, 22-year-old cody kaufman. you heard his father at the top of the show. 13 people are dead. that includes the suspected gunman. he has been as ian david long. he was a former marine that has had several run-ins with the >> reporter: it is hard to wrap your head around the situation here. as i step beside me right down that street, about a block or so that is where the borderline bar

and grill is. the hearts of so many are heavy this morning. 13 people are dead including the suspected shooter. he is a marine veteran who did a tour in afghanistan and suffered from ptsd. he lived with his mother. he entered the borderline when hundreds of young people were inside. they were there for a college night thaeut dnkg listening to music having a good time. also tragically killed that 29 year veteran of the ventura county sheriffs department. he was one of the very first to enter the bar. he was killed trying to save lives. he was set to retire next year and leaves behind a wife and grown son. back here the scene is still being processed. the fbi has arrived. they will stay here at least another 12 hours or so.

we'll be there at 6:00 tonight and be there live. we are hearing stories of the heros who are inside that bar, a young man for example. he lived through the vegas nightclub shooting. another young man who used a chair to knock out a window and save people and usher them to go out a secon window to safety. we are staying on top of that to learn more about them as well. that's the very latest. abc 7 news. >> so many heros but also so many victims. thank you. we are learning details about the gunman who is believed to have taken his own life inside that bar. he because former marine treated for ptsd. we are live in the news room with new information, katie. >> law enforcement worked to notify a family of the victims. they haven't identified any of those victims. they ahave released about the

suspected gunman. >> it appears he walked up to the scene. he shot the security guard. he stepped inside. it appears he turned to the right and shot several of the other security and employees there and then began opening fire. >> ventura county sheriff idea if i had him as ian david long. he entered the bar around 11:20 and opened fire using a .45 caliber glok handgun. >> this weapon did have an extended magazine on it. we do not know at this time how many rounds were in the weapon or how many rounds the magazine could actually hold. >> it is unclear how he targeted the club which is possible. the sheriff says he was the victim of a battery at another bar in 2015 but no known connection to borderline. wednesday night is college night

and the place was packed with students. >> we haven't confirmed but we have a couple witnesses that have eluded to that. >> he was a veteran with the u.s. marine corp. questioned why he had access to a gun. >> basically heard the shots. that's tall probably 6'2" figure. >> he realized what was happening and helped pull people to safety knocking out windows with a bar stool. >> grab as many people as i could and pulled them under the table until i heard the shots -- until i heard a break in the shots. we got people out of there as much as we could. >> the sheriffs office and fbi conducting a search of long's home. they have had contact with him at his home in april but mental health experts cleared him on

that day. >> the sheriff said at this point they have to known motive and that long purchased the weapon legally. he shot and killed himself after killing the club. his body was located in the office of the club. >> thank you. a slow procession began in the past hour for the sergeant. people along the route stopping to pay their respects. the sidewalks were lined with residents and children from near by schools. other first responders crowded freeway overpasses to honor him. he was shot several times as he tried to stop the gunman. he had been set to retire in the next year. ventura county sheriff. they went to the gym together. they listened to the moment he announced this death following the shooting. >> sheriff sergeant. he was totally committed.

he gave his all and tonight as i told his wife he died a because he went -- he went in to save lives and save other people. >> here is a photo. he was 54 years old. he leaves behind a wife and a son. >> president trump ordered that the u.s. flag be flown at half staff. i should make that sunset saturday. that does include the flag at the white house on all public buildings, military posts, posp snainaval stations abroad. california highway patrol was on scene within three minutes when officers entered shots numerous times. that sheriffs sergeant died in the hospital. god bless all of the families of the victims. thank you to law enforcement.

after the shooting looking for her who was at the club dancing that night. a reporter from our sister station spoke to adam this morning. >> he was here trying to learn a little bit more about hiez niece. he did not know where she was. he spoke to one of her roommates. he told him when the shooting happened they simply lost track and they had not heard from him since then. he had been where hitt was located. he said she was not there and he is trying to piece everything together, trying to get good news. over the past 15 minutes or so we saw him leave this location. unclear if it is good news or bad news. he was trying to locate her. he was fearing the worst fearing she may be among the dead inside the bar and grail. he was certainly hoping it was not the case. he described her as a young scholar, a bright girl, a good

fire danger. i'll show you what to expect in the winds that could gust to 60 miles per hour. we have had gusts faster than that already. anything that develops as far goes it will spread rapidly above a thousand feet. that's where it is. we are gusting as fast as it is. it is 42 miles per hour. look at this. 72 miles per hour winds. that's getting close to hurricane level. oakland hills, crossing the golden gate has not been easy. we are gusting around 20 to 35 miles per hour. this is what to expect as we head throughout the day today. we are going to get another burst of windows like we had this morning around 6:00 this evening. as we head deeper into the overnight hours you can see the winds start to taper and so does the fire danger.

recovering in the hospital after breaking three ribs in a fall. the 85-year-old fell in her office yesterday. she actually went home but was in such discomfort she went to the hospital this morning. she fractured three ribs on her left side. it is the second time she has broken ribs in a fall. she is also a cancer survive sore. she was appointed to the supreme court by president clinton in 1993. earlier today a ceremony held for new supreme court justice brett kavanaugh. officials attended. they did n appear as is customary. officials say there were no public aspects because of security remember that smoke?

there it is. it shows you the winds are blowing from the northeast to the southwest. it will be sunny, breezy and absolutely dry. in fact the reporting station over inthe air was the lowest ever recorded for this date. that's how dry the air is. it will taper tomorrow. it will let off the accelerator. the highs will continue to stay ton warm side of average. here is what we are dealing with. mid-to upper 60s. look at low to mid-70s. you cooled all the way down to 39 degrees this only 9% is there. one of the highest is 31%.
