hundreds of homes gone. and the wildfire devastating butte county continues to burn. chances are you are going to smell the smoke this morning. it is bringing terrible air quality to the bay area. two wildfires in southern california destroying homes. strong winds making it even worse. so we don't have a lot of good news for you i'm sad to say on this friday morning, november 9th. >> we want to focus on the fire burning through butte county. let's check in with mike about the air quality. what does it mean for the bay area, mike? >> like you guys mentioned, it is just nasty out less you geti. this caught my attention because of what we were looking at as we

drove by. that's not fog. that is not haze. that is smoke in the lights on the western span of the bay bridge. right now unless you live south of the san mateo bridge, you have unhealthy air. it means all of us, not for the most susceptible. it means all of us are breathing unhealthy air unless you're in the south bay. here's a look at your planner for today. it's just going to stay this way all day. hazy sunshine. warmer than average temperatures. and our first sweurpbt spawinte air. none of us should be burning any wood today. that would just add to the problem. let's talk about the morning commute some more. here's alexis. >> i do want to talk about road closures due to that fire. let's take you out to our traffic maps. significant roadways are closed, including highway 70. skyway is closed. highway 99 from state route 149 to 9th. be in that area, you are

encouraged to stay away. and the same thing that mike just described in the bay area, we have all the smoke from the campfire from the fires all around butte county. there we go. you can see the the haze under the lamps on the san mateo bridge too. that will be participa of your commute this morning. next traffic updates in 10 minutes. thanks, alexis. more now on the breaking news of an out of control wildfire that's threatening chico this morning. it. >> has burned through the city of paradise and other communities in butte county. you can see the campfire on this map. it spread quickly yesterday and destroyed paradise. megalia, butte, creek county, butte valley are all under evacuation orders. we have seen several videos like this. people trying to get out. 40,000 people have been evacuated. the fire has destroyed 1,000 buildin buildings. we know many of those buildings are homes.

20,000 acres have already burned. high winds in butte county making the campfire even worse. >> take a look at this firenado o our reporter captured last night, neil road west of paradise. behind us you can really see it. the streak of red in the center showing you how powerful the spot fire is. laura says when the winds picked up, it looked like flames were leaping hundreds of feet into the air. >> hard to believe she was able to capture that and stay safe at the same time. north bay, no school for students in santa rosa junior high because of the heavy smoke from the campfire. all campuses closed including two santa rosa kputsz, petaluma closed because of the poor air quality. >> much more on the campfire at abc7news.com. you can find more on that

miles per hour. so far no fatalities or severe injuries reported. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. more breaking news. this time out of north carolina. reports of an active shooter at top sale high school in hampstead. as soon as we hear anything of course we will let you know. for the mass shooting in thousand oaks, investigators are searching for the answer on a lot of people's minds, why did he do it. the gunman toss aid smoke bomb into the borderline bar & grill in thousand oaks and then opened fire late wednesday night. we heard stories of heroes breaking windows to use them as escape routes. >> our friends got the bar stools and they started slamming it against the windows so we could get out. >> the lone shooter was 28-year-old ian david long, a u.s. marine corps. veteran. he killed himself after killing 12 people at the club's college night >> we are learning a lot more about some of those victims. this is justin meek.

he had recently graduated from nearby california lutheran university. the school praised him for saving lives during the shooting. and koeldy coffman loved baseball and served as chief umpire for a youth league. he leaves behind two younger brothers. marine corps. veteran dan manrique helped with a group called team red white and blue. another victim, blake dingman. he played baseball in high school, grew up in thousand oaks. jake dunham died along with his friend that i just showed you. so these two were friends. blake and jake, both young men enjoyed offroad vehicles together. i want to show you another victim. sean adler worked as a bouncer at borderline. a friend told abc 7 news adler just fulfilled a dream by opening his own coffee shop is called rivalry roasters.

ventura county sheriff's deputy ron helus lost his life. he was on the phone with his wife when shots came over the radio. 21-year-old noel sparks was active in her church. a friend praised sparks for helping others. she graduated high school in the north bay last year. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard was at a vigil for sparks last night. >> it hurts when it hits home for sure. >> reporter: friends lit candles to remember alaina housely. her family owns a long-time grocery store. she was a teenager who was going places. >> she was the most amazing person. she had such a future ahead of her. >> reporter: alaina was a freshman at pepperdine university. she and friends were at a bar in thousand oaks when a gunman opened fire. alaina was among the 12 victims killed.

♪ they filled the soccer field in napa for where alaina graduated last spring. >> we pray for the families. we pray for the victims. >> she's the athlete that never stops trying. she's the student who never stops studying. >> if you ever needed a friend, she was the one to go to. if you ever had problems, she would be there for you. >> reporter: congressman mike thompson made this call to action. >> to resolve that we will do everything in our power to put an end to this senseless violence. >> reporter: the housely family said we want to honor alaina by focusing on how she lived her life. she would have insisted it be respectful with an eye towards solving senseless shootings. >> her grandfather said he was deeply moved by the service here at the high school. the loss of his granddaughter is

smell everywhere. good morning to you. sit friday, november 9th. obviously there is a lot going on. we want to start with the terrible air quality that you will see in the bay area today. mike, i think it is worse this morning than when we went to bed. >> that is a good observation. what happens is a cap develops in the atmosphere. the warm air rises. the cooler air sinks to take its place. it is dragging the smoke down. it concentrates it into lower levels. you can see it on visibility layer. two miles because of the smoke in santa rosa and around san francisco and sfo. and it is just palpable outside. i mean it's awful. you can taste it, smell it, see it on walnut creek. i was driving down 680, happened to be in the area. couldn't even see mount diablo because it was so thick. we have a spare the air day. i'll show you that in less than 7 minutes.

in thousand oaks yesterday morning. hundreds of people gathered last night to honor the 12 victims shot at the borderline bar & grill. >> police are continuing to dig deeper into the suspect's background. stephanie ramos has more. >> reporter: authorities have been scrubbing the allege gunman's past looking for clues as to why he would open fire, killing so many. they learned he had recently been cleared after an incident at his home. a community shattered. hundreds coming together to remember the 12 people killed late wednesday when a gunman opened fire inside a packed southern california bar during college night. gunshots and then chaos. authorities say 28-year-old ian david long, a former marine, walked into the bar with a legally purchased .45 caliber
