hundreds of homes gone. and the wildfire devastating butte county continues to burn. chances are you are going to smell the smoke this morning. it is bringing terrible air quality to the bay area. two wildfires in southern california destroying homes. strong winds making it even worse. so we don't have a lot of good news for you i'm sad to say on this friday morning, november 9th. >> we want to focus on the fire burning through butte county. let's check in with mike about the air quality. what does it mean for the bay area, mike? >> like you guys mentioned, it is just nasty out less you geti. this caught my attention because of what we were looking at as we

drove by. that's not fog. that is not haze. that is smoke in the lights on the western span of the bay bridge. right now unless you live south of the san mateo bridge, you have unhealthy air. it means all of us, not for the most susceptible. it means all of us are breathing unhealthy air unless you're in the south bay. here's a look at your planner for today. it's just going to stay this way all day. hazy sunshine. warmer than average temperatures. and our first sweurpbt spawinte air. none of us should be burning any wood today. that would just add to the problem. let's talk about the morning commute some more. here's alexis. >> i do want to talk about road closures due to that fire. let's take you out to our traffic maps. significant roadways are closed, including highway 70. skyway is closed. highway 99 from state route 149 to 9th. be in that area, you are

encouraged to stay away. and the same thing that mike just described in the bay area, we have all the smoke from the campfire from the fires all around butte county. there we go. you can see the the haze under the lamps on the san mateo bridge too. that will be participa of your commute this morning. next traffic updates in 10 minutes. thanks, alexis. more now on the breaking news of an out of control wildfire that's threatening chico this morning. it. >> has burned through the city of paradise and other communities in butte county. you can see the campfire on this map. it spread quickly yesterday and destroyed paradise. megalia, butte, creek county, butte valley are all under evacuation orders. we have seen several videos like this. people trying to get out. 40,000 people have been evacuated. the fire has destroyed 1,000 buildin buildings. we know many of those buildings are homes.

20,000 acres have already burned. high winds in butte county making the campfire even worse. >> take a look at this firenado o our reporter captured last night, neil road west of paradise. behind us you can really see it. the streak of red in the center showing you how powerful the spot fire is. laura says when the winds picked up, it looked like flames were leaping hundreds of feet into the air. >> hard to believe she was able to capture that and stay safe at the same time. north bay, no school for students in santa rosa junior high because of the heavy smoke from the campfire. all campuses closed including two santa rosa kputsz, petaluma closed because of the poor air quality. >> much more on the campfire at abc7news.com. you can find more on that

firenado there on our website. now onto more breaking news.fanh southernne of em is close shoong c kler live with details. >> one of the fires is burning near thousand oaks miles from the mass shooting. it forced mandatory evacuations. miles away from the hill fire, firefighters are also battling the woolsy fire, which has grown to 8,000 acres this morning with zero containment. 15 homes have been destroyed. 75,000 homes have been evacuated in l.a. and ventura countys. >> when we came certain homes that were, because of the winds, blowing fire from one home to the next. >> unfortunately strong santa ana winds are expected to continue with gusts up to 50

miles per hour. so far no fatalities or severe injuries reported. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. more breaking news. this time out of north carolina. reports of an active shooter at top sale high school in hampstead. as soon as we hear anything of course we will let you know. for the mass shooting in thousand oaks, investigators are searching for the answer on a lot of people's minds, why did he do it. the gunman toss aid smoke bomb into the borderline bar & grill in thousand oaks and then opened fire late wednesday night. we heard stories of heroes breaking windows to use them as escape routes. >> our friends got the bar stools and they started slamming it against the windows so we could get out. >> the lone shooter was 28-year-old ian david long, a u.s. marine corps. veteran. he killed himself after killing 12 people at the club's college night >> we are learning a lot more about some of those victims. this is justin meek.

he had recently graduated from nearby california lutheran university. the school praised him for saving lives during the shooting. and koeldy coffman loved baseball and served as chief umpire for a youth league. he leaves behind two younger brothers. marine corps. veteran dan manrique helped with a group called team red white and blue. another victim, blake dingman. he played baseball in high school, grew up in thousand oaks. jake dunham died along with his friend that i just showed you. so these two were friends. blake and jake, both young men enjoyed offroad vehicles together. i want to show you another victim. sean adler worked as a bouncer at borderline. a friend told abc 7 news adler just fulfilled a dream by opening his own coffee shop is called rivalry roasters.

ventura county sheriff's deputy ron helus lost his life. he was on the phone with his wife when shots came over the radio. 21-year-old noel sparks was active in her church. a friend praised sparks for helping others. she graduated high school in the north bay last year. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard was at a vigil for sparks last night. >> it hurts when it hits home for sure. >> reporter: friends lit candles to remember alaina housely. her family owns a long-time grocery store. she was a teenager who was going places. >> she was the most amazing person. she had such a future ahead of her. >> reporter: alaina was a freshman at pepperdine university. she and friends were at a bar in thousand oaks when a gunman opened fire. alaina was among the 12 victims killed.

♪ they filled the soccer field in napa for where alaina graduated last spring. >> we pray for the families. we pray for the victims. >> she's the athlete that never stops trying. she's the student who never stops studying. >> if you ever needed a friend, she was the one to go to. if you ever had problems, she would be there for you. >> reporter: congressman mike thompson made this call to action. >> to resolve that we will do everything in our power to put an end to this senseless violence. >> reporter: the housely family said we want to honor alaina by focusing on how she lived her life. she would have insisted it be respectful with an eye towards solving senseless shootings. >> her grandfather said he was deeply moved by the service here at the high school. the loss of his granddaughter is

i wanted to show you the air quality today which is unhealthy for about two-thirds of the bay area. if you have outdoor activities, put them off until tomorrow if you can. that's when the air will be healthier. it will stay that way hopefully through sunday when spare the air may drop.

a red flag warning may be issued. we'll talk more about that coming up >> in the north bay, a fawn that got stuck in a fence is now free thank to a fairfax police officer. the lieutenant here helped the deer yesterday. the police department posted this video from his body cam. he covered the fawn's eyes with a blanket so the animal would calm down and used his baton to separate the deer from the fence. the deer does have a cut on his leg but is otherwise going to be all right the giants celebrated the life of willie mccovey at at&t park yesterday. is. >> the transplant from mobile, alabama adopted the bay area as his home in 1959. he instantly became a fan favorite. >> we're all excited the first day when he got the four hits incident was like from day one he became everybody i knew's favorite player. >> i idolized willie mays but i

moveon.org and took place at 5:00 local time all across the country. fda creating new rules to keep flavored cigarettes and vaping products away from teens. the new policy is expected to be announced as early as next week. fda told the journal they want to stop underaged vaping. the new policy will include tougher age verification controls for online sales. the next time you fly to seattle, a friend or family member could meet you right at the gate. they have launched a pilot program to allow local residents beyond the security checkpoints even if they don't have a ticket. pe expere everything allow that sea-tac has to offer. it is the first time in 17 years that people can get through security without a ticket. >> no. the lines of security. we don't need it. okay. san jose and 20 other cities are suing the fcc. marry car dough published an op-ed claiming a new mandate

prevents city from installing smart street light poles which provide internet connection to low income areas. >> it is a source of shame that here we are in the heart of silicon valley and we have probably 100,000 people who don't have any broadband access at home. we know that that's a huge barrier to economic opportunity, educational opportunity. and we've got to get through this if we're going to be able to broaden prosperity in this valley. >> the fcc's new rule limits how much local government can charge for smart pole service. the mayor says this undermine's the ability to negotiate with service providers. we have to talk about that high fire danger. boy, it is really difficult to breathe here even in the city of san francisco. the fire is pretty far away from us. the entire bay area being affected.

>> leave a building, leave your car. smack you right in the face. yesterday was one of the first days in a while. we had to keep them shut because of the smoke. here's a look at san rafael. you can see the haze off in the distance as we look southbound 101. the fire danger until 7:00. it is just going to be spare the air that will take over the rest of the day with that warm sunshine. haze will linger tonight thanks to this bone dry air out there. guess what, the fire danger could return saturday night and again sunday as another wave of winds rolls through. won't be as fast or as long as the one we have dealt with but it's possible. look at these temperatures. if you could go outside and wanted to spend time outside, upper 60s to mid-70s from half moon bay, santa cruz. 69 in san francisco. 71 to about 75 for the rest of us. look at all the mid to upper 30s

in inland valleys. low to mid-40s around the bay. san francisco milder at 48. my accuweather seven-day forecast. temperatures pretty much in the mid, maybe even a few upper 60s along the coast. low to mid-70s all the way through next thursday. bone dry out there. bad air, alexis. >> it is terrible. you can see some of that showing up on the visibility layer. today it is smoke. taking you into one of our only issues we have had blocking. northbound 238, connector to southbound 880. we had a disabled vehicle partially blocking the right lane. chp has cleared that from the area. you are stop and go from castro valley. it cleared early enough that that should be able to recover. san mateo bridge. the smoke and haze under the lamps, the lights on the bridge. it is not good out there this morning. definitely going to be part of your commute, whether you're using mass transit or driving.

smell everywhere. good morning to you. sit friday, november 9th. obviously there is a lot going on. we want to start with the terrible air quality that you will see in the bay area today. mike, i think it is worse this morning than when we went to bed. >> that is a good observation. what happens is a cap develops in the atmosphere. the warm air rises. the cooler air sinks to take its place. it is dragging the smoke down. it concentrates it into lower levels. you can see it on visibility layer. two miles because of the smoke in santa rosa and around san francisco and sfo. and it is just palpable outside. i mean it's awful. you can taste it, smell it, see it on walnut creek. i was driving down 680, happened to be in the area. couldn't even see mount diablo because it was so thick. we have a spare the air day. i'll show you that in less than 7 minutes.

county. the fire heading toward chico. new evacuations overnight. one evacuation center full. fires surrounding the vehicle. so many homes in paradise are burning. estimated to be 1,000 right now. the raging inferno is wiping out a whole community. >> this actually, the wind, caused its own wind. all of a sudden you get whirlwinds. the dust and the dirt and the ash were getting in your eyes and just burning. incident was really crazy wind. i've never been in that kind of wind before. scary. >> reporter: both lanes of neil road to the west of town were converted the outgoing direction so people could evacuate the area. many only able to grab their loved ones, their pets and themselves. soes freewo be he o wout. several people injured, including firefighters. matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you.

moving into the bay area cities. >> it's so alarming. satellite image gives you a bird's-eye view of how bad the smoke really is. you can see it here. certainly you can smell it everywhere you tkpwho this morning. amy? >> reporter: good morning, jessica. i just interviewed the spokesperson at west contra costa. all kids will be moved inside today. no p.e. outside, recess, lunch, it's all coming in. that's because of the bad air quality. they want to keep the kids safe. take a look at the air quality, what it did to the skies in the east bay here yesterday. look at the orange haze. schools in the region, they're adjusting. and the school district spokesperson said he wants parents to know the final call of course is up to them. >> one of the things we want to make sure parents understand is that if they have concerns about their children's health, we

in thousand oaks yesterday morning. hundreds of people gathered last night to honor the 12 victims shot at the borderline bar & grill. >> police are continuing to dig deeper into the suspect's background. stephanie ramos has more. >> reporter: authorities have been scrubbing the allege gunman's past looking for clues as to why he would open fire, killing so many. they learned he had recently been cleared after an incident at his home. a community shattered. hundreds coming together to remember the 12 people killed late wednesday when a gunman opened fire inside a packed southern california bar during college night. gunshots and then chaos. authorities say 28-year-old ian david long, a former marine, walked into the bar with a legally purchased .45 caliber

glock handgun and opened fire. >> personally got grazed. that was after i had watched him shoot the three people in the front who were all my friends. >> reporter: one of his friends survived the las vegas massacre last year. and so did this woman's son. >> my son was in las vegas with a lot of his friends, and he came home. he didn't come home last night, and i don't want prayers. i don't want thoughts. i want gun control. >> reporter: the suspect was found dead inside the bar. police believe 6th shot himself. authorities say 6th used an extended magazine, which is illegal in california, but that allowed him to fire more than 10 bullets at a time. in washington, stephanie ramos, abc news. >> one of the victims killed in thousand oaks is an 18-year-old woman from napa. alaina housely was a freshman at pepperdine university. she graduated from vintage high school earlier this year.

we have a big problem southbound 101 before you get to grant avenue. we have a multivehicle crash. not 100% sure on the details. we have possibly two cars and two semis involved. and i think we have injuries involved here too. we have about three lanes blocked southbound 101. that is not great. we have emergency crews just heading there. they are calling for an ambulance as well. we also have i believe a disabled vehicle blocking the middle lane. you are heavy from north 238 and 238 slow from an earlier disabled vehicle as well. a quick check outside. 87 heading towards the airport, you can see all the smoke and haze. it will definitely be part of your commute today. next traffic update in just about 10 intyle. the a
