that our home's going to be okay. >> tens of thousands of evacuees in butte county, many wondering if they'll have a home to return to as the most destructive wildfire in california history continues to spread tonight. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. take a look at new video tonight of the camp fire. nearly 6500 homes have been destroyed, along with 260 businesses. >> nine people have died, and nearly three dozen people are missing. the fire has burned 90,000 acres and is just 5% contained. we have live team coverage for you tonight. >> abc 7 news reporter carlos salcedo is at an evacuation center in chico, but we begin with amanda del castillo. amanda? >> dan, ama, cal fire radio transmissions suggest utility giant pg&e may be responsible for the deadly camp fire. 15 minutes before the deadly camp fire began turning paradise into an apocalyptic scene, pg&e

detected a transmission line outage across the feather river. >> responding power lines down. >> that resulted in a power outage at 6:15 a.m. cal fire says the camp fire start new year's day that area at 6:33. >> these are things that should not be happening. >> state senator jerry hill has remained critical of pg&e. he in order sb 819, meant to potect customers from pg&e disaster related rate hikes. this year cal fire found equipment owned and operated by the utility started at least 12 wildfires in the october 2017 firestorm. investigators found pg&e violated state code in eight of the fires, including the devastating and deadly adobe and atlas fires, which torched the north bay. attorney frank petri is representing victims of the north bay wildfires against the utility giant. >> at this point in time, more questions than answers. however, because i've been through, i've seen this movie now, this is the fourth time

that i've seen this movie, i think i know how it's going end. >> but there is still a long way to go in this camp fire firefight. >> this has got the potential for a major incident. requesting 15 additional engines. >> reporter: pg&e e-mailed a statement to abc 7 news saying the cause of the camp fire has not yet been determined, and pg&e will fully cooperate with any investigations. pg&e warned customers it might shut down power to parts of butte county just two days before the camp fire ignited. we know that was never the case. i'm amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. >> amanda, thank you. evacuation centers are filled with displaced residents holding on to hope. abc news reporter carlos salcedo continues our coverage live in chico. carlos? >> yeah we are outside a neighborhood church in chico. this is one of four evacuation centers set up throughout the county, and it's at capacity

tonight, meaning all beds inside are full with evacuees. that means about 300, more than 300 evacuees are inside waiting to get word to see when and if they'll be able to return to their neighborhoods. outdoor lamppost illuminates the thick smoke-filled air. the raging camp fire has forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate and overwhelmed several shelters. red cross volunteers brought in extra beds at the shelter in chico to accommodate more evacuees. >> we slept in the car overnight here. probably do that again tonight. >> nicole packed up her most precious belongings in her mom's car yesterday morning after being forced to leave her vehicle behind. >> we got as much as we could. my car got left behind because there wasn't enough gas it in. >> away from the fire zone is nicole's main concern is what's left of her home. >> we were right below ace hardware.

it had to go through us to get to them, and our side of the hill is completely burned. we're about 95% sure our house is gone. >> for standing, looting has become a concern in the devastated areas. the sheriff with a stern warning. >> looting is a despicable crime. if you go into an area where people have been displaced and you steal from them, that is the lowest form of thievery. and we take that very seriously. we're going to do everything we can to catch you. >> officials asking for patience from residents during these uncertain times, many praying for best. >> we're just hoping right now that our home is going to be okay. others preparing for the worth. >> we might rebuild. we might move out of state. we might move somewhere else. we don't know. >> the camp fire continues to burn just 14 miles from where we're standing right now. officials do not have a timeline on when evacuees will be allowed to return to paradise to see for

themselves the damage that's been left behind. in the meantime, we're there are still 35 people who have been reported missing. officials say those individuals might not be missing at all, they just haven't been able to make contact with their loved ones. in chico, carlos salcedo, abc 7 news. >> carlos, thanks very much. in the nearby town of paradise, officials estimate only two out of ten homes, maybe only one out of ten homes are still standing. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony has more on the destruction there. >> we're in downtown paradise, a town that 26,000 people called home. that is before the fire. now it's a town that's been virtually destroyed in less than 24 hours. the road through paradise is now lined with scenes of apocalyptic destruction and jarring signs of sheer terror and panic. abandoned cars line the roadways. there are trucks, even a school

bus among them. some even ran off the road or smashed into one another as drivers tried to escape the wall of flames. now we know at least five people here didn't make it out. though the wind-driven flames have moved through, what's left in their wake is devastating. in every direction left and right, street after street, the homes are gone. and so are most of the businesses. >> the town's devastated. it's devastated. we're grateful that we got people out as quickly as we did yesterday, but we have a lot to do to rebuild. >> paradise mayor jody jones and councilman steve crowder surveyed what was left of their town, trying to keep an eye toward the future amid so much darkness. >> about 80% of the houses in town are gone, and our downtown

is devastated. this fire took everything. it wasn't a section. it was town wide. >> this is just one of more than 200 businesses that burned here in paradise, probably in a matter of minutes. it will now take this community many years to recover. in paradise, laura anthony, abc news. >> it's hard to even imagine, the whole town almost completely wiped out. >> it's awful. >> obviously, the condition on the fire lines are critical. with so windy and so dry, this thing just explode. >> meteorologist sandhya patel has the latest on the conditions. >> the winds are actually lighter, which should help the firefighters in that vicinity. right now east-southeast, 3-miles-an-hour gusts to 7. it is 51 degrees right now. so cool. some of that smoke from the fire in our area today, impacting us. so a spare the air alert. air quality advisory continued through monday. unhealthful for the north bay

and the inland east bay. poor for the rest of you tomorrow. sunday, monday poor for all areas. visibility running about two miles in santa rosa right now. as you take a look, the smoke from the satellite picture was just blowing into the bay area. today it was heavy, and we do have fire danger increasing. 10:00 p.m. saturday until 4:00 p.m. sunday, red flag warnings for the hills, solano and lake counties. gusts 35 to 60 miles per hour combining with low humidity will mean fire dangler be critical as we head towards the weekend. ama and dan? >> all right, thank you, sandhya. well, smoke and air quality is a huge concern across the bay area. four hours' drive from paradise, some are playing it safe by staying inor but others decidede out tonight. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard is live in concord with the story. cornell? >> ama and dan, so much smoc s the air, giving sore throats and scratchy eyes. it didn't stop one football game

alameda county, and oakland left from castro valley tonight to battle two massive fires. they're burning in the greater los angeles area just south of simi valley. the hill fire has consume around 1500 acres and is 15% contained. a and the woolsey fire has burned 35,000 acres. they're just miles apart from each other. evacuations are under way in ventura and los angeles counties. at least 100 homes have been destroyed, including caitlyn jenner's malibu home. other celebrity evacuees include lady gaga, kim kardashian west and melissa etheridge. >> now a lot of people are wondering how the smoke in the air will affect their pets. abc 7 news stopped by pinnacle animal hospital in san jose. there we met with the medical director. she tells us if the air quality can harm you, it will also harm your cat or dog. >> well, you really want to have your dogs at home. you don't want to be out, especially exercising and running around at the dog park. dogs can be pretty sensitive, and cats too. >> cats are a bit easier to deal
