most druskt wildfire in california history continues to spread. >> we hope right now that our home is fud cam 6,500 homes and more than 250 businesses. 9 people have died and three dozen people remain missing. last check, the fire burned 90,000 acres. containment at 5%. president trump is responding to the fires burning in california right now. overnight he threatened to stop federal funding. this is what he tweeted just after midnight. it says, there is no reason for these massive deadly and costly forest fires in california. except that forest management is so poor. billions of dollars are given each year with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. remedy now, or no more fed payments. in comes as we learn more about what may have started the deadly fire in butte cnt ab 7 news reporter amanda castillo has the story. >> reporter: hell fire radio

transmission suggests the utility giant pg&e may be responsie campfire. 15 minutes before the deadly campfire began turning paradise into an apocalyptic scene, pg&e doekted a transmission line outage across the feather river from poe dam. >> possible power line down. >> resulting in a power outage at 6:15 a.m. calfire says the fire started near the area at 6:33. >> these are things that shouldn't happen. >> jerry hill senator has remained critical of pg&e he author the sb 7819 meant to protect the pg&e skpers from disaster related rate hikes. this year calfire found the utility started at least 12 wildfires in the october 2017 fire storm. investigators found pg&e violeted state code in eight of the fires, including the devastating and deadly adobe and atlas fires. which torched the north bay. attorney frank pitre is

update from chico. >> yut door lamp posts illuminates the thick smoke-filled area. the raging kampa fire forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate and overwhelmed several shelters. red cross volunteers brought in extra beds at the shelter in chico to accommodate more evacuees. >> we slept in the car overnight probably do that tonight. >> nicole reardon packed up precious belonging in her mom's car after being forced to leave her vehicle behind. >> we got as much as we can my car was left behind because of not enough gas. >> away from the fire zone nicole's main concern is what's left of her paradise home. >> i know ace hardware burned down we were rightably. it had to go through us to get to them. and our side of the hill is completely burned. we're about 95% sureou is gone. >> for the homes still standing looting has become a concern in the devastated areas. the sheriff with a stern

warning. >> loot something a despicable crime. if you go into an area where people have been displaced and you steal from this them that is the lowest form of thievery. we take that very seriously. we are going to do everything we can to catch. >> you officials asking for patience from residents during uncertain times now. many praying for the best. >> we are just hoping right now that our home is going to be okay. >> others preparing for the worst. >> we might rebuild. we might move out of state. we might move somewhere else. we just don't know. >> officials do not have a time line when evacuees will be allowed to return to paradise to see for themselves the damage that's been left behind. in the meantime there are still 35 people who have been rorepord missing. officials say they might not be missing but haven't been able to make contact with loved ones. in chico. carlos salcedo, abc 7 news. >> nearby down of paradise officials estimate only

10 to to% of homes are still standing. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony has a closer look at the devastation. >> reporter: we are in downtown paradise, a town that 26,000 people called home. that is before the fire. now it's a town that's been virtually destroyed in less than 24 hours. the road through paradise is now lined with scenes of apocalyptic destruction. and jarring signs of sheer terror and panic. abandoned cars line the roadways. there are trucks, even a school bus among them. some even ran off the road or smashed into one another as drivers tried to escape the wall of flames. now we know at least 5 people here didn't make it out. though the wind driven flames have moved through what's left in their wake is devastating. in every direction left and

right street after street the homes are gone. and so are most of the businesses. >> the town is devastated. it's devastated. we're grateful that we got people out as quickly as we did yesterday. but we have a lot to do. to rebuild. >> paradise mayor jody jones and councilmember staef crowder surveyed the town trying to keep an eye toward the future amid the darkness. >> about 80% of the houses in town are gone. and our downright is devastated. this fire took everything. it wasn't a section. it was townwide. >> reporter: this is just one of more than 200 businesses that burned here in paradise, probably in a matter of minutes. it will now take this community many years to recover. in paradise, laura anthony, abc

7 news. smoke from the campfire is drifting into the bay area. a spare the air alert is in effect through monday. meteorologist lisa argen is back with more. and lisa, this is problematic especially for sensitive groups. yes, chris, it's about as bad as it was a year ago with the october fires up in santa rosa. as up the spare the air alert over the weekend through monday -- now the worst air quality has been in the north bay and our inland east bay. now it may drift around a little bit. but overall we are still in this pattern with the lit winds, high pressure on top of us, allowing to put a lid on the atmosphere. right now the winds are light. but this is significant because not only do we need wind but the wind will switch around, ramp up from the other direction, the offshore wind bringing the high fire danger again. low relative humidity overnight into tomorrow. but as for now we look at the smoke, the haze, through today and tomorrow. if you are sensitive you may want to think twice about heading out or getting a mask. >> and with the concern over the

interstate 880 in oakland will open this afternoon. one woke ago a driver crashed into a support beam for the overpass project. that caused temporary giant steel girders to fall on the

roadway. caltrans says the crash did not impact the safety of the bridge. work began in 2015 on the estimated $102 million project including the 29th' avenue overcrossing. in san francisco police will increase patrols in parts of golden gate park after two fires yesterday. flames burned dry brush near the polo fields after 5:30 last night. another fire broke out at the same time near the casting pools. dozens of firefighters responded and got both fires under control in about 30 minutes. no word on how the fires started. as we mentioned earlier, the campfire is now the most destructive wildfire in california history. 7 on your side michael finney has advise for victims how to deal with the aftermath. >> reporter: unfortunately this is not our first time around the block. >> yeah, it's very sad. my heart and all my prayers go out to everyone in paradise, and really everyone throughout california that's joining the

side. >> announcer: now the accuweather forecast with lisa argen. good morning, to you. waking up to live doppler 7 showing thu because we do have low clouds and fog in santa rosa. but it's really the cold temperatures and the high fire danger. fire and ice combined with the frost advisory expiring at 9:00 in the blue here. then the red flag warning in effect for the evening hours into sunday where winds are gusty and offshore. look how cool anywhere from 5 degrees to 12 degrees cooler than it was 24 hours ago. a look at sand rafael where you can see the clouds, haze and smoke. it's 42 in san jose. 48 san francisco with 50 in pacifica. and from the east -- this is from mount tam. look at that. you definitely know there is -- a lid on the atmosphere there. the smoke being trapped in the lower elevations. pu we also haveke layer at 3,000 to 4,000 feet. 29 degree sns santa rosa.

burr. chilly out there with 357 no novato. look at concord to livermore. certainly one of the coldest mornings we have seen in sometime. visibility from 1.75 miles to 2 miles in petaluma. you can see all around the bay area. 3 miles to 4 miles. really impacted from this, the hazy conditions, the smoky conditions. this is from the sutro tower camera with fire fire danger in effect this week. the relative humidity plumb et cetera as the winds switch to offshore. we have the smoky skies and poor air quality, the spare the air alert today and tomorrow and likely into monday with no rain expected for the next seven days. now the last measurable rain was october 3rd. that was that fluke when we had the heavy rain. as we went into the rest of october and november, bone dry. the next chance would be next weekend and then beyond that there could be a chance over thanksgiving as well. but, boy, we need it now.

we are not getting it as the winds switch around to the northeast with 15 to 25 miles an hour will be likely. and then the gusts at 35 to 60. we have seen this over and over again. north bay mountains, east bay hills, the relative humidity 9% to maybe 17%. this is why. low back at the direction. and look at the speed. 20 to 30 miles an hour. calistoga, sonoma. napa, fairfield, along the diablo range as well. you can see the gusty winds at the coast. through 7:00 sunday into sunday morning. you can see by the afternoon they slowly will begin to dial back. but once again, out of the northeast. the wrong direction to bring on any mixing or brip bring up the relative humidity. between tu and the we can we are under the hazy smoky conditions. with the smoke ob securing the sun we are not warming up period of time. 60 to, 7 it in san jose and santa cruz. tonight the winds kick up. breeze in the north and east bay

quality we can expect this we could. lisa. unfortunately, chris not a lot of change around here. we have high pressure. that's putting a lid on everything. we have the rather of smoke in the higher elevations. i talked about the spare the air alert today continuing tu tomorrow, monday. the one thing you notice that might be missing is the red. and that is the unhealthy air from the north bay to the inland east bay. you are low backing at slight improvements but not enough that any weather system is responsible for because we are only looking at the light winds. right now here surface winds are calm, maybe 7 miles an hour. san francisco. and what we see is a reenergized area of high pressure that will strengthen and that will allow for the gusty offshore winds to below once again above 1,000 feet north and east bay. with that, it dries out the atmosphere. and we are still going to have the smoke to deal with right on through monday. we will have a detailed look in a few minutes. >> thank you. two fires in southern

california forced thousands from homes and some residents drove through flames to get out. >> oh, my god. oh, my god, please, god. please, god. oh, my god. >> the hills and woolsey fires in los angeles and ventura counties have burned nearly 40,000 acres kboind. two bodies were found yesterday. but it's unclear if the deaths are related to the fires. here is amy powell from our sister station in los angeles. >> flames leaped from the steep slopes surrounding west hills. the fire burning through acres of thick brush, threatening homes and frightening residents. >> armageddon, apocalypse. it was all -- it was all on fire. all on fire. and it was raining ash. and windy. and it was pretty crazy. it's like one of the most intense fire scenes i've seen in my entire life. >> fortunately firefighters were able to knock down the fire that came within a few feet of several homes. earlier pushed by fierce winds, the fast-moving blaze devastated this cal bass as neighborhood.
