for california, blaming the state for the fires. the angry response today from at least one bay area fire crew. abc 7 news starts now. >> announcer: live where you live, this is abc 7 news. deadly and uncontrollable, fire crews in butte county expect the situation to get increasingly dangerous as they battle the most destructive fire. i'm eric thomas, dion lim is off today. we begin with developing news on the fire near chico, blamed today for nine deaths. it started two days ago and has burned a hundred thousand acres, more than 156 square miles. the so-called camp fire is 26% contained. the concern is that winds will pick up and push the fire south. we have live coverage tonight. we check in first with abc 7 news reporter carlos saucedo in

chico. you talked the fire victims today? >> reporter: that's right, eric. i've talked to some people who have lost everything, all simply trying to reconnect with loved ones. i want to show you what's going on behind me. chp officers have blocked off this area, having to turn away vehicles, many evacuees themselves waiting to see when they'll be allowed back to their neighborhoods to see the destruction for themselves. much of paradise remains black with ash and debris from the devastating camp fire, more than 6,000 homes and businesses tharp destroyed still smoldering. >> there was a big fire, it wanted to burn everything. >> reporter: kevin jay stayed behind to protect his home. he considers himself one of the lucky ones since his house is still standing. not the case for many of his neighbors. >> all these places i used to go, people i used to know that are right down the street from me, it's all gone, it's all

burned. >> reporter: are you trying to get a hold of people? >> i can't. >> reporter: without power and little to no cell reception it's hard to reach anyone, this as evacuees wait to get word on their properties. today, we delivered the worst possible news to marty nelson. >> i'm very, very upset about that. you know, we had all our family belongings and everything inside of the home. and we lost everything. >> reporter: he asked if we could go to his house on crest view drive. this is what's left, the sense of knowing now bringing some closure. >> when i found out today, it was kind of a relief in some way. and now i can kind of go on with -- not me, but our family can kind of go on with our lives. and make preparations on the future. >> reporter: in the midst of all the destruction, there are signs of hope. firefighters rescued this injured cat along skyway. now they're hoping to reunite the cat with its owners. now, there's still no timeline on when evacuees will be allowed

this. this is the live look from san jose camera looking towards downtown san jose, there are biddings there, put you can't see them. drew tuma is here to let us know how long the smoky air will last. >> the air quality is terrible across the region. that live look behind me, you should be able to see the san francisco skyline, but you cannot. the air quality right now anywhere from unhealthy to very unhealthy. i can't stress this enough. if you do not have to be outdoors, stay inside. unfortunately the air quality the next two days through monday afternoon will be poor. i think it will fluctuate between poor and unhealthy. the air quality is not improvng through monday afternoon. now we have a new concern, a red flag warning will go into effect at 10:00 tonight, bring in some very gusty and dry winds, bringing our fire danger to very high levels overnight. detail the red flag warning, show you the winds coming up in a full forecast coming up.

two massive brush fires burning in southern california have now turned deadly. the fires began wednesday night south of simi valley. the hill fire is over seven square miles, 25% contained. the woolsey fire doubled overnight, consuming 70,000 acres or 109 square miles, double the size of san francisco. fire officials are now reporting that two people have died, although details are limited about how they died. more than 250,000 people have evacuated los angeles and ventura counties. evacuees say it looks like a war zone. some families returning for the first time say it's never going to be the same. >> this is our neighborhood. >> this is my kids neighborhood. >> this is not -- not the way we remember it, not the way my little boys are going to remember it when we bring them back here. >> there is some fwnz. calmer winds are helping the fire fight. highway 101 has been temporarily shut down in that area. president trump threatened to pull funding from california because of the wildfires, but

later tweeted words of kindness. the first tweet blamed the fires, damage and death on gross mismanagement of the forest and threatened to withhold federal funds in the issue was not remedied. in the past the president has criticized the sate's forest preservation policies. one woman we spoke to said it's disheartening because the majority of people living in paradise, one of the hardest hit areas, voted for him. >> this is the community he would use as an example, the community that supports him, truly based on people who have made it on their own, building their businesses. >> the president did post a new tweet saying his heart is with the firefighters and he asked god to bless them. he has issued a declaration providing federal funding before posting the tweet. alameda fire responded to the prosecute's first tweet in a facebook post today, it reads our brothers and sisters of the fire service put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve our communities. often we provide care to others

in san francisco you may notice more police in golden gate park following six fires there in less than 24 hours. police are increasing patrols beginning today. all the fires were isolated in th area of the polo fields and casting ponds. the first fire started yesterday evening at around 5:30. all the fires are suspicious. they did not cause any injuries or damage to buildings. >> announcer: now your accuweather forecast with drew tuma. >> we continue to track the unhealthy air quality overnight tonight, but our fire danger will be increasing once again thanks to increased winds. live doppler 7, the active sweep, it is dry. we want rainfall, not in the picture the next 24 hours. the picture outside right now, all of that smoke, that sun going down, so much haze in our atmosphere at the moment. winds are slowly increasing, and our hills. diablo gusting to 22, oakland

hills 15, 17 that current gust at mt. tam. we expect the winds to ramp up over the next 12 hours unfortunately. red flag warning will go into effect at 10:00 tonight, lasting through tomorrow afternoon. for north bay mountains, east bay hills, the diablo range as well and the santa cruz mountains are typical hot spots, winds out of the northeast will go from 15 to 30 miles an hour sustained with gusts even higher than that, approaching 60 miles an hour, combine that with low humidity once again, we know this recipe this time of year, everything is bone dry. any fair fires that start can spread rapidly. talk about the winds tonight, 10:00, the red flag warning, winds picking up in the north bay, gusting close to 30 miles an hour. sunday morning, we expect the winds to continue to speed up. but 1:00 early sunday morning, the winds are racing out of the northeast, in the north bay hills, anywhere from 20, 30, even higher than that miles per hour. that continues by 6:00 in the morning, the winds are not letting up that dry air moves in

once again creating high fire danger. as we go throughout the later morning hours, and to the early afternoon on sunday, we do expect those winds to die down. but overnight tonight, that fire danger will be running exceptionally high. here's the call from accuweather overnight tonight, we are turning windy, some cool spots in the 30s in the north bay, elsewhere in the nourts. we will have the haze in our sphere and tomorrow will be hazy. the air quality will be on the poor side. limit time outdoors. temperatures in the 60s with the red flag warning in effect. accuweather seven-day forecast, can't stress enough tomorrow, not only high fire danger across the region, the air quality is poor, even have those smoky skies on monday when veterans day is observed. even the next seven days cannot find a drop of rain. >> well, we'll keep you informed on the red flag warning as well as the smoke. thank you very much. still got college football though. >> we do, and they are, stanford game officials are monitoring
