. good morning. thanks for joining us on this sunday, november 11. we begin with the fire danger. a red flag warning went into affect overnight. >> good morning to you. we are looking at low visibility, smoky skies and the gusty winds in the hills. live doppler 7 showing you the visibility. three miles in concord, two in oakland. the temperatures, where the valleys have that cool air drain overnight, still chilly. 50 in san francisco. let's talk about those temperatures. you can see with the winds, anywhere from 27 to 29 degrees warmer this morning. that's due to the gusty offshore winds. a check right now, see them out

of the north, 15 to 17 miles an hour. we go in the upper elevations, up to 37 miles an hour. even over the oakland hills, up to 25 miles an hour. it's another spare the air alert with the northeasterly flow pushing the smoke into the bay area. we will talk about our spare the air alert today and tomorrow coming up. the camp fire is the third deadliest wildfire in california history. so far, nearly two dozen deaths have been reported. survivors are reeling as they realize the magnitude of the damage. >> we had all our family and belongings and everything inside of the home. we lost everything. >> here is what we know. 23 people have died. more than 100 people are still missing. the fire has burned 105,000 acres. there are fears it could grow more today. it's 20% contained.

this is the most destructive wildfire in california. >> reporter: residents packed this auditorium to get an update on the most destructive fire in state history. some of those present escaped with minutes to spare. >> i almost didn't make it. five minutes, it would have been too late. >> reporter: lucy and her family's house in paradise has not been accounted for. but they are sure it's gone, given the thousands of homes that have been wiped out. >> last night we tried to get through. they turned us around. they said, you can't go through. >> reporter: conditions in paradise are uninhabitable. emergency crews are allowed in to prevent looting. we found one resident behind. >> people i used to know that are down the street from me, it's all gone. it's all burned. >> reporter: in the midst of the destruction, there are signs of hope. firefighters rescued this injured cat along skyway.

they are hoping to reunite it with its owners. with many people missing, there's fear that the death toll now at 23 could rise even higher. >> my heart goes out to those people. i will tell you that this weighs heavy on all of us. >> reporter: search and recovery efforts entense p s intensify. >> it's a huge area with a lot of open line. when the winds occur, it has the potential to push the fire further toward areas that we have issued warnings for. >> reporter: those evacuation orders he is referring to were issued in the communities of berry creek and brush creek. this is northeast of the city of orville. orville is not in imminent danger. as for the red flag warning, that will continue until monday morning.ovnornewsome got

a look at the devastation. this map gives perspective on the size of the camp fire. it would stretch from san francisco all the way down the peninsula past san mateo. the air quality is a concern for many today. we captured this video showing the smoke yesterday. let's get the latest on what you can expect today. >> that persistent ridge of high pressure certainly putting a lid on the atmosphere. as we look outside right now, it looks pretty much the same, with the haze out there. we are talking about the air quality slightly better than yesterday. it was extremely unhealthy in the north and inland east bay. now you can see from north to south, it's poor. we are looking at those breezy winds that will mix out some of the smoke. not to any better quality. we are going to stay in the poor category as the northeasterly winds continue to push the smoke

across our area, the central coast. throughout the day today, you will have to watch it. stay inside is our best advice. a spare the air alert today and tomorrow. then once this ridge of high pressure begins to weaken, we will get the flow from the ocean. it looks like by tuesday and wednesday, our air quality improves. unfortunately, if we look for any kind of rain in the near future, we are looking dry. hazy conditions today with temperatures because of the smoke obscuring the sun on the cool side. low to mid 60s. we will talk about the rest of the week when we come back with our full weather forecast in a few minutes. masks are recommended if you plan to spend time outside. we have more on how people are dealing with all this haze. >> reporter: for some people that shouldn't spend time outside at all. >> it's dark and foreboding and di dirty.

st. antho on this the shelter w remain open until the air is considered healthy. monday night football could be in jeopardy. the sacramento bee reports officials will decide today whether to move the location of tomorrow's game between the 49ers and giants to another location. it's still expected to go on as scheduled at levi stadium. smoke forced the team to change its practice hours friday. as for the raiders game in oakland today, an nfl spokesman said they are monitoring the conditions. at this point, the game will kick off as scheduled. watch the niners take on the giants tomorrow night. winds are expected to pick up today as crews continue to fight the hill and woolsey fires. flames are burning in ventura and los angeles counties. new video shows crews trying to save a home if malibu. the fires have destroyed 150 homes. that's expected to rise.

aren't even burning near california's forests. >> it was disgusting. >> reporter: what jeff saw was president trump's tweet blasting the forest department for mismanagement, even threatening to cut federal aid. remedy now or no more fed payments the president wrote. >> there's no difference from him saying what he did to the firefighters and victims here as it would be for troops going into battle and threaten to pull their funding. >> reporter: he is one of the vice-presidents of the california firefighters association. he admits there are problems but says now isn't the time for politics. six firefighters they sent are paid for by federal money. >> i think everybody should remember the federal government owns 98% of the forests in california. >> we can't depend on this president to be with us. >> reporter: maxine waters was in san francisco. a keynote speaker for an naacp event.

she says once again, president trump is taking on california. >> this is typical of this president. he speaks out about things he knows nothing about. he has no understanding of how processes work. >> reporter: later the president backtracked with another tweet, this time praising firefighters saying in part, our hearts are with those who have died. the destruction is catastrophic. god bless them all. but the president's blaming the forest department fails to address the bigger issues like global warming. >> it is not about forest management. we are dealing with really warming temperatures, record low humidity, very extreme winds. >> reporter: i spoke to doug osee. he says the tweet was spot on. he says it doesn't criticize victims or firefighters. he said given how bad the problem is the president has to spend a strong message to get lawmakers to act. stay with abc 7 for the

a string of six suspicious fires is under investigation. they happened within 24 hours of each other. it started friday evening just after 5:30. flames burned eucalyptus trees near the polo fields and in the casti ining pools. nobody was hurt. marriott workers have reached an agreement to end their labor dispute. workers in the south bay were on strike for 37 days. employees were demanding higher pay, more job security and smaller workloads. earlier this month, workers in oakland came to an agreement. san francisco marriott employees are remaining on strike. one of the oldest scams is rearing its head, targeting a viewer fr e viewer. she tells her story to 7 on your side. >> he said he would be here. >> reporter: thelma stares out

her on. il to see a man with balloons and a check for $2 million. >> they said i had won the publishing clearinghouse. >> reporter: she received the call in august. >> we will come to your door and have your check for $2.5 million. there will be a new car out front. i went, oh, my gosh. >> reporter: then the caller said she would have to pay taxes first. >> oh, okay. i got all excited. >> reporter: she wired $500 to the man on the phone. he called back to say she had to send more. >> then it was $300. then it was $100. then it was $500 again. >> reporter: every time she paid, they demanded more. >> your car is coming. it's coming. they never come. i got wise to the whole idea. you are never going to deliver. >> reporter: somehow she kept hoping it was real. >> if i hear a truck or something come by, i was always, this is it. >> reporter: kept wiring more

money. >> i just thought, next time they will give it to me. next time -- i'm so close. i have given them so much. >> reporter: a zipper bag is stuffed with receipts for money she wired. $500 here, $200 there. $20,000 in all. her savings wiped out. >> i'm brokenhearted. i could have given that to the school. and new shoes. i have holes in my shoes. >> reporter: 7 on your side was there when the crooks called again. >> when will i be able to come up with money so it can be finalized? >> reporter: she waits for her prize, though deep down she knows it's a scam. >> when i was talking to them, i will catch you. >> reporter: she may never get that money back. she wanted me to warn you. scammers target trusting seniors. if someone says you won but have to wire money, it's a scam. don't fall for it.

in oakland. it's a littleund san carlos and napa right now. we are looking at some warmer temperatures in areas without the wind we are 29 to 26 warmer from our north bay valleys. unfortunately, those winds will continue to gust. the strongest right through about 8:00. highlights, red flag warning with gusty offshore winds above 1,000 feet. smoky skies, poor air quality, next chance of rain weekend. the winds will gust from 20 to 30, even 50 miles an hour. right now, you can see the east

bay hills, up to 23 miles an hour. they will continue to blow out of the north throughout the day. we look at the current humidity. 21%, that's pretty low for this time of the morning. 19% in napa. you add more wind, a little bit of heating through the day and 3:00 in the afternoon, we're down to 9% in napa. fairfield 10%. you can see better in the south bay. it's a very dry day out there. cool, hazy, smoky, pretty unusual for november. as we go towards tomorrow morning, the humidity recovery levels get up a little bit. still, it's a dry morning on monday. still 10% to 13% relative humidity. the winds will dial back. this is the strongest we will probably see from 25 to 35, even 40 miles an hour. you can see along the range, the colors there, that indicates the strong winds. into the overnight hours, things

will certainly settle down. here we are by noon today, by 4:00, this red flag warning expires. we are looking at that offshore component. the winds will slack. temperatures today with the smoke and haze, in the 60s. we might get a little better air quality from time to time as that wind mixes some of the smoke down towards the north. don't look for big improvements. 63 in oakland. mid 60s in inland east bay. overnight tonight, we are looking at those chilly conditions with 30s in the north bay, 40s with the winds not a factor. that means a colder night tonight. the seven-day forecast, high fire danger. mid 60s inland. not a lot of temperature variation. download our app and notice for the holiday, a little warmer. the air quality continues to be an issue with the spare the air alert today, tomorrow. download our app and you notice the temperatures are certainly going to be much the same.

fund-raiser race raises money support and research. abc 7 had a team that took part. valley fair mall is trying to stay competitive. we have a look at a major renovation and expansion. >> reporter: it's a massive transformation to shoppers this holiday season. they have renovated the existing mall with its 200 stores. the center court sports tiles, 14,000, custom made and newly designed seating is satarting t appear. work continues on a major expansion for 100 more stores and a dozen new restaurants and a third anchor store. >> the customer is constantly evolving. we need to keep up with that customer. you can't standsti still. >> reporter: the expansion will cost $1.1 billion.

they are glad they are focused on staying relevant. >> i was thinking when i heard about the money they were spending. they must have done some research to know that people like to congregate and come somewhere particularly at the holidays and feel good about spending money and having a sense of community as opposed to just staying home and ordering online. >> reporter: a goal is to extend how long people stay from the current 73 minutes to two hours. >> the longer people are in a shopping environment, the more money they spend. malls that are getting people to want to stay there, because they have interesting things and exciting things and food and things other than shopping to do there, they are going to win. >> reporter: the expansion should be completed next spring. retailers and restaurants will need to build out their space. >> we're the number one tourist destination in silicon valley. 22 million, we probably have more visitors than the next ten things combined. >> reporter: it should come as no surprise there's new technology here as well. including technology that help

good morning. thanks for joining us. we start with a look at the weather. we have a red flag warning. >> that's right. the wind has started to gust in our north and east bay hills once again. the winds up to 50 miles an hour through the overnight hours. we are expecting the winds to peak at 8:00 this morning. they are 15 to 30 miles an hour with the gusts up to 60. that will lower the relative humidity anywhere between 9% and 18% by the afternoon. current check of the surface winds, 12 to 15 miles. look at that yellow shading. that indicates the stronger flow. as we go up in height from two to 3,000 feet, over 35 miles an hour. oakland hills over 20 miles an hour. look at the temperatures. 62 in half moon bay.

that's all due to that gusty northeast wind that has allowed for a lot of atmospheric mixing and the temperatures to climb. you would think we would get better air quality. we may see just a bit of an improvement. i will explain in a few. the camp fire is now responsible for at least 23 deaths. last night, many residents of the hard hit paradise community gathered to hear from emergency officials. the fire is the third deadliest and most destructive fire in state history. nearly 6,500 homes have been destroyed. an iconic bridge that connected paradise to chico has been destroyed. it was built in 1886. it was believed to be the last bridge of its kind in the u.s. the bridge was added to the national register of historic places in 1988. the fire destroyed the structure on friday. the red trusses are all that

remain. the woolsey fire left destruction across southern california. more than 83,000 acres have burned. it's only 5% contained. amy powell has the details. >> reporter: melted pieces of debris. burned vehicles. there's not much for residents to salvage at the oak forest mobile home park in west lake village. at least a dozen homes were destroyed. this woman evacuated her home at 3:00 in the morning two days ago. >> so i grabbed whatever i could for the last minute, because it was really kind of bad. then my daughter took me in. and my dog. >> reporter: the 87 didn't know her home went up to flames until she returned. >> every time something happens, an earthquake or whatever i say to myself, i'm very, very, very fortunate that i have survived.

died from a self-inflicted g gunshot wound. he killed 12 people at the borderline bar & grill. he was found dead at the scene. one of his victims was a ventura county sheriff's deputy. he exchanged gunfire with long before he was fatally wounded. a bay area clinical psychologist is sharing her take on this terrible tragedy. >> reporter: suspected shooter ian david long served in the u.s. marine corps from 2008 to 2013. records show the 28-year-old spent several months in afghanistan fighting in an environment experts say is different than previous wars. >> there's no front line. these wars have been fought primarily through improvised explosive devices. that means that every man, woman or child that you see could bel psychologist says it's combat

that could have affects. >> veterans said the hardest part is coming home. >> reporter: long's neighbors suspect he had ptsd. there was a crisis intervention team and mental health specialists responded to his home. he was cleared after they determined he wasn't qualified to be taken under 5150. >> my guess is he wasn't -- clearly wasn't deemed to be of imminent risk of harm to self or others, despite needing mental health treatment. >> reporter: abc 7 news reached out to v.a. who confirmed long was not enrolled in health care at any time. in florida, it's deja vu. the secretary of state has ordered a recount in races too close to call. that includes bitter contests for governor, u.s. senate and state agriculture commissioner. we have the latest. >> reporter: there will be no answer until at least thursday,

possibly longer, for who will represent florida in washington and in the governor's mansion. state law requiring a machine recount when the margin is half a percentage point or less. by saturday afternoon in the governor's race, ron desantis held a slight lead against his andrew gillum of about 33,000 votes, falling under the half-point threshold. for u.s. senate it's closer. rick scott ahead of democrat senator bill nelson by .15 percentage points. anger from those on both sides of the political divide pouring on the streets with accusations of voter fraud, suppression and abuse of power. gillum had conceded. but with the results narrowing, a reversal. >> i am replacing my words of concession with an uncompromised and unapologetic call that we

people in the east bay need to be careful. we have a red flag warning this morning. be extra careful today. world leaders are in paris to commemorate the armistice that ended world war i. today marks the 100th anniversary. the white house says president trump arrived in his own car and walked in separately due to security protocol. vladimir putin arrived separately and walked in solo. san francisco will say thank you to veterans today. it's the 98th annual veterans day parade. it starts at 11:00 today. happening today in san francisco, servicemen and women will be honored. commemorations will highlight the history of the all black buffalo soldiers. there will be a talk, tour and a flag raising ceremony. that event starts at 10:30 this morning.
