gusts at santa rosa. look at what's happening in the upper levels around 2 to 3,000 feet. 54 mile an hour wind gusts. the oakland hills, above half moon bay, so certainly we're looking at those winds just blowing that dry brush. the temperatures are warming to 62 in half moon bay, all due to the offshore wind. we will talk about the rest of your sunday in a few minutes. the camp fire is now the third deadliest in california history. nearly two dozen deaths have been reported. survivors are reeling as they realize the magnitude of the damage. >> we had all our family and belongings and everything inside the home. we lost everything. >> here is what we know. 23 people have died from the camp fire.

more than 100 people are missing. there are fears it could grow more today. it's 20% contained. this is the most destructive wildfire in california history, wiping out nearly 6,500 homes. we have the latest from chico. >> reporter: residents displayed packed this auditorium to get an update on the most destructive fire in state history. some of those present escaped with minutes to spare. >> i almost didn't make it. five minutes, it would have been too late. >> reporter: lucy and her family's house in paradise has not been accounted for. but they are pretty sure it's gone given the thousands of homes that have been wiped out. >> last night we tried to get through and they turned us around. they said, you can't go through. >> reporter: conditions in paradise remain uninhabitable. only emergency crews are allowed in to prevent possible looting. we found one resident who stayed behind. >> all these places i used to

go, people i used to know that are right down the street from me, and it's all gone. it's all burned. >> reporter: in the midst of the destruction, there are signs of hope. firefighters rescued this cat along skyway. they are hoping to reoureunite cat with its owners. with many missing, there's fear the death toll now at 23 could rise higher. >> my heart goes out to those people. i will tell you that this weighs heavy on all of us. >> reporter: search and res could ha recovery efforts intensify. >> it's a huge area. when the winds occur, it has the potential to push the fire further toward areas that we we issued warnings and orders for. >> reporter: those evacuation orders he is referring to were issued in the communities of berry creek and brush creek. this is northeast of the city of orville. officials stress the city of orville is not in any imminent danger.

as for the red flag warning, that will continue until monday morning. the acting governor got a look at the devastation. he tweeted these photos from fire zone yesterday with a message, thank you, first responders for your work. this gives perspective on the size of the campfi fire. the air quality is still a concern for many today. we captured this video showing all the smoke yesterday. let's get the latest on what you can expect today. >> good morning to you. very little change out there. we do have a lot of wind blowing in the upper elevations. as you look at the air quality map, you see the red circles. that indicates the unhealthy air around the bay area. get to the north and east, it's a little better because that's where the winds are blowing and pushing the smoke into our area. poor air quality the rest of the

afternoon from the north bay to the santa clara valley. then we will take it another day into tomorrow. little change. but even into tuesday, we are still going to have smoke out there. we have to get rid of the stubborn ridge of high pressure. it breaks down eventually. will it bring rain? i will let you know coming up. masks may be hard to come by, but they are recommended. we have more on how people are dealing with the haze. >> reporter: some people shouldn't spend time outside at all if they can help you. if you don't have a place to go, there are resources available. >> it's just a dark and foreboding and dirty -- it hurts your throat. >> reporter: the camp fire has air quality in the red, which is considered unhealthy to breathe. >> when there's a warning and you don't have shelter, somebody needs to provide shelter. >> th

>> reporter: people can stay out of this as long as they can. >> there's no areas that are healthy to breathe air. we are telling people to stay indoors and limit your time outside. >> reporter: that didn't hold people back. >> we came for the festival. it was so much fun. >> reporter: not the air. >> it's very heavy. it's not usual. >> the air quality where we live was worse yesterday. >> reporter: the family headed home early because their son has asthma. crowds sprinkled with masks stayed behind to watch the celebration fireworks. colors filling the sky behind the evening's haze. despite air quality alerts, the show was approved. the emergency shelter will remain open until the air is considered healthy. monday night football could be in jeopardy if the air quality doesn't improve. legal officials will decide today whether to move the location of tomorrow's game

between the 49ers and giants to another location. right now it's expected to go on as scheduled at levi stadium. smoke forces the team to change its practice hours on friday. as for the raiders game in oakland today, an nfl spokesman said they are monitoring the conditions. at this point the game will kick off as scheduled. watch the niners take on the giants tomorrow night at 5:00 on abc 7. in southern california, winds are expected to pick up as crews continue to fight fires. this is a live picture of flames in ventura county. fires are burning there and in los angeles county. 150 homes have been destroyed. that number is expected to rise. new video shows crews trying to save a home in malibu. two deaths have been reported in the fire zones. it appears the victims were overrun by fire in a driveway. downed power lines prevented detectives from getting to the scene. one man who saw the wind and danger firsthand backed off his plan to check on his home. >> i thought, just check it out, see if i could see it.

it's too dangerous to get through. >> back out live, the woolsey fire exploded in size in 24 hours. it burned more than 83,000 acres. it's 5% contained. the hill fire is 4,500 acres and 65% contained. president trump blamed the wildfire on gross mismanagement and threatened to cut air. we have reaction. >> reporter: president trump's tweet is getting backlash from across the country. the president of the california professional firefighters association called the president's tweet ill informed, ill timed and demeaning. adding some of california's fires aren't even burning near california's forests. >> i was disgusted and sickened when i saw it. >> reporter: he saw president trump's tweet blasting the forest department for mismanagement, even threatening to cut federal aid. the president wrote, quote, remedy now or no more fed payments. >> there's no difference from him saying what he did to the firefighters and victims here as

it would be for troops going into battle and threaten to pull their funding. >> reporter: this man is a vice-president of the california firefighters association. he admits there are problems. but says now is not the time for politics. of the ten firefighters sent to the wildfires, six are paid for by federal money from this area. he says the tweet is not only demoralizing but wrong. >> i think everybody should remember that the federal government owns 98% of the forest land in the state of california. >> we can't kdepend on this president to be with us. >> reporter: maxine waters was in san francisco, a speaker for an naacp event. she says president trump is taking on california. >> this is typical of this president. he speaks out about things he knows nothing about. he has no understanding of how processes work. >> reporter: later the president backtracked with another tweet, this time praising firefighters saying our hearts are with those who have died.

bay. yeah, things looking nice this morning. we do have the smoky skies causing some problems out there for people who have issues with poor air quality. at least one person was hurt at a shuttered mexican restaurant. it broke out around 5:00 last night. fire officials say the injured person was found inside and may be a squatter. the restaurant closed ten years ago. a string of six suspicious fires in golden gate park is under investigation. they happened within 24 hours of each other. flames burned eucalyptus trees and dry brush near the polo fields. nobody was hurt. marriott workers on strike in san jose have reached an agreement. workers in the south bay were on strike for 37 days. they were demanding higher pay, more job security and smaller

workloads. earlier, workers in oakland came to an agreement and went back to work. san francisco employees remain on strike. they are prepared to fight for as long as it talks. one of the oldest scams is rearing its head again targeting a viewer. she was trying to raise money for special needs children when she lost everything to a ruthless scam. she tells her story to 7 on your side. >> he said he would be here. >> reporter: thelma stares out her front window. hoping to see a man with balloons and a check for $2 million. >> they said i had won the publishing clearinghouse. we will come to your door and have your check for $2.5 million. there will be a new car out front. i went, oh, my gosh. >> reporter: then the caller said she would have to pay the taxes first. >> i went, okay, okay. i got all excited. >> reporter: she wired $500 to the man on the phone. he called back to say she had to

send more. >> then it was $300. then it was $100. then up to $500 again. >> reporter: every time she paid, callers demanded more. >> every time they would say your car is coming. it's coming. they never come. i got wise to the whole idea. you are never going to deliver. >> reporter: somehow she kept hoping it was real. >> if i hear a truck or something come by, i was always, this is it. >> reporter: kept wiring more money. >> i just thought, well next time they will give it to me. next time they -- i'm so close. i have given them so much. >> reporter: a zipper bag is stuffed with receipts for money she wired. $500 here, $200 there, $20,000 in all. her savings wiped out. >> i'm brokenhearted because i could have given that to the school. and new shoes. i got holes in my shoes. hello. >> reporter: 7 on your side was there when the crooks called again. >> when will i be able to come up with money so it can be finalized, is that what you

said? >> reporter: she waits at the window for her prize, though deep down she knows it's a scam. >> when i was talking to him i said, if it's my last breath on earth, i will catch you. >> reporter: she may never get that money back. wanted me to warn you, scammers target trusting seniors. if someone says you won a prize then have to wire money, it's definitely a scam. don't fall for it. disappointment for high school students. one of the premiere marching ban competitions was canceled because of the bad air quality. it was supposed to happen yesterday in union city. it was moved because of the poor east bay air quality. then conditions there deteriorated, too. forcing organizers to call off the fund-raiser. cided, we have fresh food, w, we have a great community.

let's get out there and have a block party and see if we can still continue to raise money. >> 32 high schools were set to perform. they depend on the event to raise $40,000 needed for expenses. good morning to you. live doppler 7 showing you that we do have a little bit of fog offshore. we are looking at the gusty winds, the red flag warning and the visibility that's been reduced across the bay area due to the smoke and haze. you notice it's improved at the airport and south bay. that is due also in fairfield to the gusty northeasterly wind. it's pushing that smoke. the winds are to the south but there's going to be more of it. notice the double digit temperature change. we are so much warmer this morning due to winds at 2,000 to 3,000 feet up to 40 and 50 miles an hour. with the bad area, look at the sunrise in walnut creek.

6:45 the official sunrise. it's 50 in san francisco. 39 in oakland. where the winds are lighter, we are looking at a cold start. it looks nice but we are looking at another spare the air alert. you can notice that it is clear out there. 59 in san francisco. 36 in concord. we have the pollutants at the surface, we have layers of smoke in the upper levels. a red flag warning, gusty offshore winds, the smoky skies, poor air quality through tomorrow. probably beyond that until we really get a change in the air quality in terms of healthy air, probably by the middle of the week. no rain. next weekend is trending dry as the system splits as it hits northern california. 17 mile an hour wind gusts at the surface. as we go up higher into the

atmosphere, 51 mile an hour wind gusts. 25 miles an hour around atlas peak. looking at 19 right above half moon bay. we are looking at the gusty winds in the santa cruz mountains. as we go through the morning hours, 20% humidity average in the north bay to 30% in the south bay. with those winds blowing and the temperatures coming up 10 to 15 degrees, we bottom out to near 9% in napa. it's dry all across the bay area. san jose, 18% relative humidity. as the red flag warning expires later on today, tomorrow morning the recovery isn't that impressive. we are still underneath that dry air mass. highretrol. strongest winds through 8:00, 9:00 this morning, 20 to 30 and 40 miles an hour. you can see that indication of red right there.

looking at the gusty winds out of the northeast. 10:00, still very gusty. it won't be until the afternoon hours when we see these begin to relax. they are still out of the northeast and that allows for the dry conditions all around the bay. highs today underneath that hazy sky will be cool. in the low 60s. 62 in richmond and san francisco. 63 in palo alto. you may notice the smoke from time to time. air quality better but it really is never going to improve very much. just bit by buiit as we get the winds to push smoke in and out of the areas across the bay area. overnight lows in the 30s and 40s. another hazy evening. air quality still bad. high fire danger, smoky skies, a spare the air alert today, tomorrow and then by tuesday, it's hazy. the middle of the week looks to be a little better in terms of air quality. look it, nothing changing

>> good morning. the winds are gusting up to 55 miles an hour. here are the areas of concern. we are looking at another round of offshore winds bringing the relative humidity down throughout the day. this will expire at 4:00. still the winds out of the east making for a very scary morning. wind gusts to 50 miles an hour. the winds are blowing, the relative humidity is decreasing. we are 32 with no wind. how about 63 in half moon bay. 36 in concord. 56 in livermore. that's bringing up the numbers from yesterday 20 to 30 degrees. we are concerned about the air quality. we have smoke not only in the upper levels of the atmosphere but at the surface. that means bad area today. details in a few minutes. developing now, for at leat

23 deaths. last night, many residents of the paradise community gathered for a meeting to hear from emergency officials. the fire is the third deadliest and most destructive in state history. an iconic bridge has been destroyed in the camp fire. it was built in 1886. it was belonged to be the last bridge of its kind in the u.s. it was added to the national register of historic places in 1988. the fire destroyed the structure on friday. the bright red trusses that kept the bridge above the creek are all that remain. the woolsey fire is leaving destruction across southern california. a live picture over ventura county. more than 83,000 acres have burned there and in los angeles county. the fire is 5% contained. amy powell has the details. >> reporter: melted pieces of debris. burned vehicles. there's not much for residents

to salvage at the oak forest mobile home park in west lake village. at least a dozen homes were % destroyed. this woman evacuated her home at 3:00 in the morning two days ago. >> i grabbed whatever i could for the last minute, because it was really kind of bad. my daughter took me in and my dog. >> reporter: the 87-year-old didn't know her home had gone up in flames until she returned to the park. >> every time something happens, an earthquake or whatever, i always say to myself, i'm very, very, very fortunate that i have survived. >> reporter: at lake sherwood, a stream of helicopters hovered low to scoop up water. making numerous drops along the ridge where the fire continues to burn through dry brush, threatening hundreds of homes. >> you can see the flames going up 10, 20 feet.

as investigators search for a motive, a bay area clinical psychologist is sharing her take on this terrible tragedy. >> reporter: suspected shooter ian david long served in the u.s. marine core from 2008 to 2013. the 28-year-old spent several months in afghanistan fighting in an environment experts say is different than previous wars. >> there's no front line. these wars have been fought primarily through improvised explosive devices. that means that every man, woman or child that you see could be an enemy. >> reporter: this clinical psychologist says it's combat that could have long-lasting affects. >> veterans have told me the hardest part has been coming home. >> reporter: long's neighbors suspect he suffered from ptsd. a sheriff explained one scenario which involved a crisis intervention team and mental he cleared afterhey

area are dealing with the smoke. we have red flag warnings. abc 7 was in north richmond for the grand opening of a basketball court. local labor unions donated $13,000 and tomb aime and goods rebuild it. >> the great thing about this court is when kids are here, they are practicing team work, working with others and they're not getting in trouble somewhere else. it's putting them on a better path in life. this is an important family center for the residents of north richmond. >> the court's namesake as well as other athletes once played on this court. you can see the colors are the same as the golden state warriors. in sports this afternoon, the raiders will try to snap their four-game losing streak.
