6:03 pm
for today. yesterday we talked about our concern with the red flag warnings and the weather. we did see an increase in fire behavior starting last night and into today. up in the big bar area across the feather river we had discussed a slop over. that over. the fire did continue to progress and we received this evening a spot fire into the bloomer hill area. currently that spot fire in the bloomer hill area is about 80 acres. we're getting resources in to work on that fire and we were able to get aircraft into that fire today. we received an additional spot fire in the goat point area,
6:04 pm
which is in the cherokee area. that fire, spot fire is about 500 acres currently and we have resources working currently on that spot fire. down along the 99 corridor was calm today. we were able to do a lot of work in the areas of paradise. we were also able to get in and do a lot of work, mop up patrol around the structures. the santos ranch area, which was a problem area yesterday, we had a good day in there. we were able to get a lot of work done and use the aircraft to progress our containment line. there is still very steep, very challenging area between santos ranch up into the bottom part, however, we are making progress. above and across the top of the fire, we did experience slow fire progression today but we've
6:05 pm
been able to get dozers and continue the containment line. thank you very much. >> good evening. i'm an incident meteorologist and actually out of reno, nevada working with the national weather service and here searching as the incident meet ro -- meteorologist for cal fire. the winds as we discussed, the winds increased last night. we were under a red flag warning and remain under a red flag warning through tonight and into monday morning. the red flag warning means that critical, there is critical weather conditions, fire weather conditions that will pose the challenge to firefighters and containment efforts because of the strong gusty winds and very dry conditions. overnight tonight, we're expecting to see another round of very strong gusty winds with gusts up to 40 miles per hour in those especially up in the
6:06 pm
higher elevations and down through the feather river drainage. expect those winds to continue into monday morning with very dry conditions, humidities will be down into the teens. even in the overnight hours. so those conditions will pose a challenge to firefighters for sure. the good news is winds will be less tomorrow. so this wind event does end tomorrow morning. once we get through that, we'll still see very dry conditions over the next several days with lighter winds, which is a good thing for firefighters for sure. last thing just wanted to reiterate the red flag warning remains in effecthugmonday >> goo foreste the firencent team four. you heard about the winds. but the fuel condition is what i want to address right now.
6:07 pm
it's been 210 days since the area last received a half an inch of rain. they are critically dry fuels available for burning and they are setting new records and have been since the beginning of november. the wind conditions coupled with that fuel means that they are primed and ready for spot fires to catch, especially in the areas south of the north fork of the feather river such as brush creek, berry creek and cherokee. so firefighters continue to remain vid lengin vigilant doin and we want to make sure the citizenry is ready for potential issues and more evacuations in that area. thank you. good evening, everybody. i'm the sheriff and coroner of butte county.
6:08 pm
so as i've done on all of these briefings, i want to start with reminding everybody that what i'm about to give you is the most current information that i have. that said, this is a dynamic situation. it changes rapidly, and so the information i provide to you now could change. i want you to keep this in mind and understand we may need to update as we go forward. i want to start with evacuation orders and give an update on that. as of this briefing, no new evacuation warnings or orders have been issued today. however, as i've said, every briefing this could change. which is why i want you to be ready to go if we issue a warning, or an order, i want you to heed that advice. we're watching this fire closely and we're working with cal fire to try to understand what areas may be threatened so that we can
6:09 pm
give you the best possible information and when we issue an evacuation warning or order, we're doing it because it's necessary based on what we have been told by our partners in cal fire. i want to remind everybody that the evacuation order for berry creek, brush creek, mount house and bloomer hill is still in effect. that hasn't been lifted. i understand a lot of people chose not to evacuate and i don't want them to be under the misguided beleeief that order h been lifted. i want to now talk with you about looting incidents and other law enforcement related matters. to date, we received 66 calls for suspicious incidents, which include possible looting. that defends how the person reports it. that could be people stating they believe somebody is looting
6:10 pm
or seen a suspicious vehicle or person in an area. we respond law enforcement officers to those areas to check them out. as of tonight, there are no arrests for looting. there have been arrests for other offenses. i spoke with you about one last night but one of the difficulties that we have in terms of providinging informati is many of these reports aren't done given the fact we're operating in a significant crisis mode and getting details to you is difficult as we do get those details, we'll push that out. now i want to talk with you a little bit about missing persons reports. so butte county'sfficnts reived friends who are unaccounted for. currently.
6:11 pm
there are 228 people and my office received in excess 550 calls and mutual aid law enforcement report are still in the process of investigating those calls to determine if those individuals are in fact unaccounted for or perhaps haven't yet checked in with family member. detectives learned there are many people currently unaccounted for for that -- of the people that are unawe countcount unaccounted for, we're working to get information to resolve those cases but there is difficulty. we're trying to work through that and i'm heaping oping we h resolution by tomorrow. i want to talk now about a new
6:12 pm
process that we are putting in place to deal with missing person cases. we have established a hot line of three numbers and what we want people to do if they believe a loved one or friend is missing after they exhausted their own resources in terms of trying to locate people by using their own network or checking on the safe and well.org website, they can call our office to make a report if they believe the person is missing as a result of the campfire. if they think that a loved one is missing and it's unrelated to the fire, they need to use the normal system for reporting that. the numbers that they will call are 530-538-6570. the second number is
6:13 pm
530-538-7544 and the third number is 530-538-7671. we've established those three lines. we have staff that are in there answering those phones. i know people have been frustrated about calling our office on our regular line to report these in getting busy signals. i want people to understand that we are receiving a very, very high volume of calls. we only have a certain number of lines that come into the sheriff's office. please know we're trying to get better every day and work to address that and my hope is by establishing these new lines we'll be able to mitigate that problem. we would ask that people call those, one of those numbers if they reported a loved one missing to connect with a
6:14 pm
detective. in addition, we really need people to help us so if someone reported a loved one missing, please call one of those numbers and update us so we're no longer looking for that individual and we can deploy those resources in another way to hopefully find somebody else. update you on ou on going effort to recover the remains of individuals who were killed as a result of this fire. currently, there are ten coroner search and recovery teams consisting of law enforcement and coroners investigators from throughout california assisting us in this search. we have two assisting us.
6:15 pm
one as you know through california state university and the university of nevada reknen and a third from las vegas area. i spoke yesterday about our assistance from the california department of justice crime lab with regard to the collection of dna from family members of people who are missing or perhaps suspected of being deceased. the way that we're going to handle that process is when you call in to report a loved one or friend missing, you'll be interviewed by detectives. your information will be taken down and as the case progresses, if we believe that we have located the remains of an individual who might be related to you, the detective will contact you and coordinate with the d.o.j. lab to take a d.n.a. sample from you so that it can be compared to the remains we
6:16 pm
found. we think this is a better way to do it as opposed to having people randomly show up and submit samples. we need to ultimately control how that process goes so we're making the best use of the resource we have. >> we've been listening to a news conference from butte county. the latest on the fires up there. the sheriff talking about some hot lines to call if you have loved ones who are missing. there are ten search and recovery teals oms out there no. they used a couple terms you might not be familiar with, a slop over fire, a fire that breaches a line that's been cut to stop it or natural hazard when it's gone over that and burning another area and spot fires when an ember is blowing someplace else and ignites a fire. there is lots going on up there, still more than 200 missing persons reports they are working
6:17 pm
with and we'll keep you updated about this as information comes in. back to what we're doing here. volunteers in the north bay are rallying support for survivors that have very little. the donation drive is being watched by folks all too familiar with what a fire did kes str destroy. >> that's towels. >> reporter: we helped him carry towels to help survivors of the campfire happening. >> looks like all they got out was their lives. so there is not a lot of resources. >> i have sleeping bags and shoes, clothes, blankets, towels, everything. >> reporter: down the road, volunteer barbara is rallying every good samaritan she knows to help the animals impacted by the campfire. >> seeing the scenes on social media and the news, you can't just sit by and do nothing. >> reporter: she is spreading the word on social media and

spear heading a drived >> that's very upsetting. i went four days not knowing if my animals were alive and not knowing what they are going throughme through. >> reporter: her horses escaped but their stable was destroyed. she is partnering with the old barn feed store to collect donations. >> we need hay. we need grains. we need supplements. we need blankets. >> reporter: ron remembers being forced to let his horses and cattle loose. >> we just turn them loose and hope for the best, you know. it is tough, and when you do lose one, it's like losing a part of your family. >> at least the owners have a little bit of a piece of mind they know their animals are being fed. >> reporter: donations from a community that knows too well how terrible wildfires can be. >> we pray for everybody up there. we're carrying them right here.
