it happened so super quick. i had friends in paradise that were telling me they could hear like tire explosions. >> some made it out, some did not. the death toll and the devastating wildfire of butte county climbs higher. the camp fire started thursday and it keeps growing. it's the east of chico and it's already wiped out much of the town of paradise. 15,000 structures are still threedonight b ames. dd uali the totalm the 1923 re the state's on rortd. this is the most destructive wildfire in state history destroying nearly 6,500 homes.

we learned dozens of them belonged to firefighters and other first responders. the fire has scorched acres and is tonight. >> reporter: right now we're at the command post in chico. earlier we were in paradise where officials discovered six more bodies. the devastation just seems to be getting worse by each day. thousands of people have lost everything now including first responders. hot spots burning throughout paradise illuminate what would otherwise be total darkness in this town without power. today six more bodies were recovered in the area bringing the death toll to as sheriff officials comb through the vast fields of debris there's fear more bodies

could be found. >> these are more challenging investigates and autopsies because you're often dealing with the remains of humans who have been burned, and in some cases you might only have bones. >> which makes identification that much more challenging. >> there's nothing left. all of my neighbors except one are gone. >> reporter: gary green stayed behind to protect his home. he's certain that one of those killed was his friend. >> she lived up the street from me and she went to church with us. yeah, she didn't get out. >> reporter: firefighters from around the state including the fran strike team spent the day working to contain the fire. >> making sure that things are completely extinguished. >> reporter: of the homes lost dozens belonged to firefighters themselves. >> i was talking to one deputy today who lost his house, lost everything and he said i wouldn't want to be anywhere else. i need to be out here helping.

>> reporter: and that goes to show you despite these difficult circumstances this community is resilient. but with more than 200 people still missing there's fear that that death toll could rise even higher. reporting in chico, abc 7 news. >> carlos, thank you very much. now, take a look at this video from the inferno in paradise. he recorded on his cellphone as he and his family got in his car to escape the flames. tens of thousands of people have evacuated because of the fire. many of them are at the butte county fair grounds tonight. there's some amazing tales of escape and survival. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, eric. it's been a tough night for so many families. a few nights ago these families were living at theirght this is these are their new homes. rvs up against the wall, trailers attached to trucks.

that's a family of 12. so many of these families say they're thankful to be alive, but so many of these families know they're far from home. she was at home recovering, still weak from two chest surgeries when warning came to evacuate. her only option, she would have to drive her own car if she wanted to stay alive. how did you manage sph. >> it was hard. it was terrifying to see the smoke and flames right in our rearview mirror. >> reporter: she had 20 minutes to grab her stuff and get out. her grandson was in the car behind her helping to navigate by cellphone. >> there were cars behind us burning up and meanwhile we kept going. >> reporter: mean whwhile her or grandson rushed home, frantic, didn't know where she was. >> couldn't fientd them. there was no cell service. >> reporter: tonight she's recovering at butte county fair grounds, happy to be her family after losing about just about

everything else. >> i lived for about 20 years. my husband died in my arms in the bed and it's all gone. everything. all my memories, all my pictures. >> reporter: but you're still smiling. >> well, yeah, because we're all together and we're safe. >> this is our campsite. it's a big mess. >> reporter: amanda mcsweeney and her family are also safe tonight after spending eight hours trying to rescue their daughters. >> i was freaking out, a lot of anxiety. i was really depressed and i was concerned about my kids. i didn't really care about my house. >> reporter: amanda was in the hospital, her fiance in court. the two broke through a police barrier knowing the risks involved. >> we pulled up on 32, and i pretty much told them you're going to move the cones or i'm going through. i was getting up there regardless.

oakland. they're keeping the masks at the check o checkout counter. >> as long as our winds continue to come down wind from this fire we will continue to see smoke in the bay area we can see unhealthy air from santa rosa, san rafael. that unhealthy air continues in san francisco, san jose, fremont, so our air is just stagnant overhead. the air quality over the next couple of days unfortunately without our winds changing direction our air quality will not be changing. we'll take a closer look at that poor air quality in a few minutes. volunteers in the north bay are rallying support for survivors of the camp fire. the donation drive is being launched by folks who ar wh t vaiolames can newer corlld storc

donations from his car to a fire relief drive to help survivors of the camp fire happening at sonoma valley high school. >> they don't have a whole lot of resources. >> i have sleeping bags and shoes, clothes, blankets, towels, everything. >> reporter: down the road volunteer barbara halford is rallying every survivor she knows to help the animals impacted by the camp fire. >> you can't just sit by and do nothing. >> reporter: she's sprword on s spearheading a drive for displaced animals of the fire after seeing heart breaking images like these. >> that's upsetting. i can't imagine what they're going through. i mean it's just horrible. >> reporter: she survived the north bay wildfires. her horses escaped but their stable was destroyed.

asbestosp news was on the scene while firefighters doused hot spots hoping the fire would not reignite. they never reached any nearby buildings. officials haven't said yet what sparked that fire. elena housely, a teenager from napa was one of 12 people shot and killed wednesday in the borderline bar and grill in thousand oaks. abc 7 reporter kate larson was in napa tonight as the young woman's body was brought home in a procession through town. >> spread love everywhere, that's how friends of elena housely said how she lived her life. she'll be buried on wednesday. with fires raging north and south these firefighters stayed back in naised the flag into a smoke filled sky for elena housely. the 18-year-old's body was escorted by family and friends at the napa police and sheriff's department from southern california to her hometown of

napa where hundreds of friends and admirers lined the streets to pay their respects to a life taken too young and too soon. >> knowing the way she passed away to me is very hard. >> reporter: they were close friends. she said they made a pact to go to prom together when they didn't have dates. she was shot and killed when a gunman opened fire at the borderline bar and grill where friends were line dancing. >> it was a terrible way to end her ea rowdrhe ath an friend to all. what step tuesday take to ensure a mass shooting doesn't happen again. >> there needs to pea new laws or things put in place to make sure that people who have guns shouldn't have them if they're not mentally stable.

sutro tower where you can see the dimly lit skyline of san francisco. that smoke obscuring the view right now. so that air quality, it is unhealthy across the board. and tomorrow while the air quality may fluctuate hour by hour depending on the winds tomorrow on average for the next 24 hours unhealthy to poor air quality. if you do have respiratory issues you do want to limit your time outside. right now temperature-wise we are cooling off rapidly into the 30s and 40s. 40 in san ramon, a little bit warmer in san francisco at 56. the wind in our hills have been slowly backing up throughout the evening hours. so our red flag warning here locally has been allowed to expire. however, we still have high fire danger across much of california. right now red flag warnings continue for redding and as far south as southern california where these will continue for

the next 48 hours because winds are not letting up especially around los angeles. back here at home tonight, though, the winds are calm near the surface. that's one of the problems why we have see much smoke in our atmosphere. so hazy skies. it will be rather cool in the north bay and inland where we drop into the 30s. 44 in san francisco, 42 in san jose. so certainly you need the heavier jacket early on tomorrow morning as it is pretty chilly. tomorrow afternoon we're pretty much topping out on either side of 79 degrees. but once again you'll have hazy sunshine and poor air quality. here's the problem, why the air mass is so stagnant. this area of high pressure is just stuck over the west coast. what it's doing, it's not allowing storms to enter the west coast, so it's keeping us dry, kicking up the winds in southern california and acts like a lid in our atmosphere this time of year. that's why the smoke cannot escape the bay area, and that's why we're having so many issues

with our air quality. however, there may be some good news in our future. we take a look at the rainfall for the week ahead, and you can see it is dry. at least with the yellow squares. however, the latest guidance we have as we head into the week of thanksgiving we do see that high pressure getting out of here and that storm door slightly opening. so our chance of rainfall will likely happen on november 19th and it looks like another chance some light rainfall may occur around thanksgiving. we'll keep you updated but it's good to see the pattern maybe changing finally after a very dry stretch to the rainy season so far. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we have poor air quality tomorrow as we observe veterans day on monday. those smoky skies will not let up on tuesday. and we're still calling it hazy sunshine on wednesday. and by thursday it looks like we're still seeing poor air quality. and by friday into the upcoming

good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. in tonight's headlines police officers and sheriff's deputies escorted the body of college student elaine housely. the pepperdine university student will be buried on wednesday. the camp fire is now tied for being california's deadliest ever wildfire. it's blamed for 29 deaths. flames still threaten more than

15,000 buildings. and fires around the state have triggered the evacuation of more than 149,000 people. many people have crowded into shelters at chico near the camp fire. some of those folks living in tents, rvs and cars lost their homes in paradise. there's a race to account for the people reported missing in the camp fire. cellphone communication is paralyzed for many. abc news reporter will carr has more from paradise. >> reporter: tonight the camp fire scorching at least 100,000 acres. communications still down, some still missing. hospital staff racing to get patients out before evacuating themselves. >> i ran up this hill and got into the next vehicle. the back of my pants were on fire and burned a hole in her seat, and she was prayingit. >> so many people had to jump out of their cars and make it run for it so search and rescue

in it it had so much smoke and so much haze and that continues over the next couple of hours. no matter where you live in the north bay, east bay, south bay, these are your current conditions. this will continue tomorrow as well with the poor air quality. a spare the air alert is in effect through monday night. and the air quality is not only poor the next 24 hours, it will continue to stay that way for the foreseeable next three or four days. and it may fluctuate hour by hour throughout the day, but on average that air quality will be on it poor side. so we're not going to get any relief from the smoke ahead. cold over our north bay and inland cities. you see temperatures dropping into the 30s, dropping to the low and mid-40s along the bay shorelines. certainly need the heavier coat out the door tomorrow morning. the highs right around the 70 zroes for many of us. once again we'll have hazy sunshine and that air quality will be on the poor side.
