[ crowd cheering ] this morning o this morning on "world news now," fire crews across california getting bad news overnight. the high winds fanning the wildfires are expected to get worse today. as we learned the death toll has gone up again. the latest recount battle in florida has begun. the democrats in both high-profile governor and senate races are unwilling to concede while the republicans now have president trump on their side. and new this half hour, a scary ride for a mother and son. >> they say they were on an inflatable raft shaped like a swan when currents pushed them miles off the florida coast. hear what happened next. and the big night in los

angeles for movies, music, celebrities. we're checking out the big awards and the big moments, including kevin hart starting some beef with the rock. that's in "the skinny" on this monday. it is november 12th. ♪ wish that i could let you love ♪ ♪ wish that i could let you love me ♪ from abc news, this is "world news now." a little performance there from rita ora. >> cool looking performance from rita ora. >> who actually looked interesting on the red carpet. >> we'll be getting to that. >> we'll get to that. a lot of news coming out of california this morning. the growing death toll in the historic wildfires. they're devouring some 200,000 acres and counting. >> the fires are burning at both ends of the state. the one in the north now the most destructive on record. at least 31 people confirmed dead. more than 6,000 homes have burned and more than 200 people remain unaccounted for. then in northern california, flames are so intense a mobile dna lab and anthropologists are being used to help identify victims.

it's really sad. people are going from shelter to shelter in a frantic search for missing relatives. abc's will carr has more from the devastated town of paradise. >> reporter: with communications down, many still missing. this woman worried about one of her co-workers. >> we have been trying to reach her family. >> reporter: hospital staff racing to get patients out before evacuating themselves. >> i ran up this hill and i got into the next vehicle. the back of my pants were on fire and i burned a hole in her seat and she was praying with me and she's like, i don't think we're going to make it. >> so many people had to jump out of their cars and make a run for it so search and rescue crews are going car by car. when they clear them, they put a pink ribbon on and move down the road. >> reporter: the camp fire now the most destructive on record in california, gutting more than 6,700 homes and businesses. sean field waiting to see what's left. >> do you have any idea if your home is still standing? >> no. >> not at all? >> i just asked the pg&e guy if

fernando valley to the malibu coast is now only 10% contained. >> that fire has more than doubled in size since friday, leaving at least two people dead, found in their car in malibu. about 150,000 people remain under evacuation orders, including the entire city of calabasas. the fire is still threatening nearly 6,000 homes. >> and that blaze indiscriminately destroyed modest homes and multimillion dollar mansions alike. the singer robin thicke and his girlfriend documented their escape before their malibu home went up in flames. and also in malibu, the actor gerard butler posted images of his scorched home saying, it's half gone. both stars expressing gratitude to the firefighters risking their lives. in nearby agora hills, the iconic mansion from "the bachelor" here on abc appeared to survive the fire unscathed but "usa today" bureau chief said the house next door burned to the ground.

and the santa ana winds that fueled these fires initially have come back. >> accuweather's paul williams takes a look at the forecast for us. good morning, paul. >> good morning, kendis, lynda. no rain in sight. no rain in sight. that's a problem when you combine that with the gusty winds kicking in through this exceptionally dry california coast. monday, looking at gusty winds for redding towards sacramento. tuesday, strong wings from santa barbara down towards san diego. in the deep south, strong storm from jackson, atlanta, charlotte, will end up targeting new york and the back side of this by tuesday with snow showers in abundance throughout the ohio valley region. kendis? lynda? >> not good news when you hear snow showers in abundance. in florida, the race is on. counties have until thursday to complete their recounts. the state's major races including u.s. senate and governor are so close that recounts are required. and tempers are even shorter than thursday's deadline. abc's victor oquendo reports. >> reporter: in broward county

protesters swarming election headquarters as they have for days. >> count every vote. >> reporter: each side accusing the other of election theft. florida's machine recount is under way. state law mandating a recount when races are within half a percentage point. the race for governor meeting that threshold, the senate race even tighter. governor rick scott leading by just 12,500 votes. meanwhile, the rhetoric between scott and his opponent bill nelson heating up. >> senator nelson is clearly trying to commit fraud to try to win this election. >> reporter: president trump weighing in, tweeting, trying to steal two big elections in florida. we are watching closely. while scott and the president have provided no evidence of fraud, democrats are expressing their own concerns about scott as the current governor being in the position to certify his own election. >> i am calling on governor scott to recuse himself immediately from any actions involving the florida election. scott has a blatant conflict of interest. >> reporter: in the governor's

race, democrat andrew gillum rescinding his election night concession. >> i am replacing my words of concession with an uncompromised and unapologetic call that we count every single vote. >> reporter: but republican ron desantis leading by 33,000 votes already looking ahead. >> we have begun our transition efforts to build an administration that can secure florida's future. >> reporter: on sunday, governor rick scott filed lawsuits in broward and palm beach counties, asking voting machines be impounded while not in use to prevent what he has repeatedly called voter fraud. we have checked with state officials. they tell us right now they are not investigating any cases of voter fraud. his opponent, meanwhile, bill nelson, says scott is making false and panicked claims. victor oquendo, abc news, broward county. in georgia, the governor's race isn't settled either. stacey abrams is getting ready to sue.

newly reported provisional ballots are shrinking the lead. abrams still needs more votes to force a run-off. meanwhile in arizona's u.s. senate race, democrat kyrsten sinema has widened her race over martha mcsally. video of hyde-smith drawing sharp criticism, hyde-smith praising someone by saying, quote, if he invited me to a public hanging i'd be in the front row. hyde-smith says her expression was an exaggeration of a reminder of the nearly 600 lynchings in mississippi's past. hyde-smith is facing democrat mike espy in a run-off election two weeks from tomorrow. espy calls the comment reprehensible. >> she's running against a black man in mississippi. >> that she is. >> those comments coming out. interesting. remembrances across the country mark the 65th observation of veterans day. the day was also the 100th anniversary of the end of world war i. a wreath was laid at the tomb of
