with an entire town leveled. look at those scenes. now the columns of smoke are visible from space, blowing out to sea from both northern and southern california where one fire is now 15% contained, but today more heavy winds are expected. >> reporter: this morning, historic wildfires burning on both ends of california. >> right now we're seeing a great retardant drop. >> reporter: in the south, more than a quarter million people have been ordered to evacuate. officials here describing a hurricane of fire obliterating entire neighborhoods. >> when you come up into this community now, it looks like, you know, it's a war zone, just demolished, burnt up houses. >> reporter: watch as the intense heat and wind hurl debris, raining down on people trying to escape. >> oh my god. i'm surrounded by fire. i'm surrounded by fire right now. i don't know what to do. >> reporter: the fast-moving flames burning everything in their path from this mobile home park in cornell to multimillion dollar mansions in malibu. the actor, gerard butler

tweeting this photo after he returned to what's left of his home, one of many celebrities including robin thicke and shannon doherty who have also lost their homes. in northern california, the so-called camp fire has leveled nearly the entire town of paradise. >> how close did the flames get to your property? >> they're all around me. what do you mean? there is nothing left. >> reporter: it's now the most destructive fire on record in california, gutting nearly 7,000 homes and buildings. >> there ain't nothing to go back to. we're basically homeless right now. >> reporter: cars turning into tombs. at least five people have been found dead in their vehicles after trying to flee. more than 200 people were unaccounted for overnight. abc's will carr is in paradise, california. >> so many people had to jump out of their cars and make a run for it. so search and rescue crews are going car by car. when they clear them, they put a pink ribbon on and then move down the road. >> reporter: even a local hospital is in ruins. this nurse was there as fire surrounded the building.

>> i called my husband and i just said, i -- i don't think i'm going to make it out of this. it's coming in too fast. i got out of my car because i knew i was going to die if i stayed in my car. the back of my pants were on fire, and i reached my hand out in front of me, and there was a fire engine that i grabbed onto. i banged on the side of the door and two firemen came out and picked me up, extinguished my pants and put a fire blanket on me. >> reporter: governor jerry brown is now pressing the white house for major disaster declaration. >> this is not the new normal. this is the new abnormal, and this new abnormal will continue certainly in the next 10 to 15 to 20 years. >> those wildfires are being fueled by heavy winds across the state. we'll have an update on the weather forecast in a few minutes. we turn now to florida and the race to recount votes with the senate and governors races

still undecided. the senate race, one of the most closely watched in the country, is down to a razor-thin margin and now there is a new legal battle this morning. abc's kenneth moton has details. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: good morning, lynda. yes, the attention is on florida and the democrat-leaning counties of florida where there are allegations of theft and fraud. this week, protests are expected to heat up in florida. [ chanting ] as the state continues the methodical recount of more than 8 million ballots, concerned all counties won't be able to get it done ahead of thursday's deadline. >> the election equipment that we have, the potential of conducting all of these is impossible. it is impossible. >> reporter: the recount triggered by law over the weekend. the races for governor and senate within a half a percentage point. by just 12,500 votes, bill nelson, democratic senator, is trailing his republican opponent, and current governor rick scott who was on fox news sunday. >> senator nelson is clearly

trying to try to commit fraud to win this election. >> reporter: president trump also weighing in with no proof tweeting, trying to steal two big elections in florida. we are watching closely. the state's department of law enforcement and secretary of state say there is no evidence of fraud. >> the evidence is that rick scott and ron desantis have won. in fact, andrew gillum can see it on the night of the election. >> reporter: the democrat in the governor's race, andrew gillum has rescinded that concession. gillum is being led by 33,000 votes. >> if you have assuredness that the state chose you, then you would want every single vote to be counted. >> reporter: democrats here in washington and florida are expressing concern about governor rick scott, demanding he recuse himself from taking any actions as governor in the recount. there have been several lawsuits against election officials in broward and palm beach counties. >> kenneth moton, thanks so much. house democrats are apparently ready to investigate

president trump's hush money payments during the 2016 campaign. those payments were made to stormy daniels and the playboy bunny karen mcdougal. both claim they had affairs with the president, and a democratic aide on capitol hill says democrats will use their subpoena power to look into those payments when they take control of the house next year. breaking overnight, a navy fighter jet has crashed into the pacific. the faa team hornet went down northeast of the philippines. two crew members were safely rescued. the fighter was based on the aircraft carrier "uss ronald reagan," the cause of the crash is under investigation. it's the second crash from the reagan in less than a month. and a new sign of diplomacy on the korean peninsula. south korea has begun the so-called tangerine air lift. military planes full of the fruit were flown to north korea today, fulfilling a promise made during a recent summit. it's one of the many agreements aimed at lowering tensions between the countries. back in this country, time now for a look at your weather for this monday morning.

up and who can't, but there is always, you know, that special situation where there might be somebody they don't know or don't know well so that's why we came up with the code word. >> reporter: that's when the driver took off. now police are praising the qui quick-thinking tween and her mother. >> the mother of this child did an awesome job teaching the code word and that potentially saved that girl's life. >> experts say in these situations kids must be proactive and that it's important for parents to teach kids they don't always need to be polite, especially if they feel threatened. a florida woman is speaking out about a terrifying ordeal when she was nearly lost at sea on an inflatable swan. tara myers and her 7-year-old son were relaxing on the swan raft when the current pulled them miles from shore into the gulf of mexico. she jumped in the water and tried to paddle back to land. that didn't work, and people along the beach, lucky for them, saw them drifting and called 911, but she was prepared for

quality is worse in two minutes. it's nasty out there. you can see it on all our traffic cameras. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. a little stack up in the cash lanes on the far right side. look at all the smoke under the lamps there on this side of the toll plaza. it is going to be another tough commute today. you can see that showing up on our visibility layer as well. as far as traffic volumes are concerned, a full closure of 880, southbound side for the 23rd avenue overpass demolition. it is scheduled to wrap up at 5:00. it looks like they may be opening lanes now. use 580 as an alternate. the death toll is increase anything butte county as the camp fire continues to burn. >> the camp fire is now tied with the deadliest fire in state history with 29 deaths reported so far. and that number could rise with more than 200 people still missing. this is the most destructive wildfire in state history.

the flames have destroyed nearly 6500 homes. some belonging to first responders. and the fire has scorched 111,000 acres. that is nearly 175 square miles. and it is only 25% contained. as abc news reporter carlos saucedo reports, now they have the grim task of identifying the victims. >> reporter: in paradise, officials discovered six more bodies. it is getting worst by each day. thousand of people have lost everything, including first responders. hot spots burning throughout paradise illuminating what would otherwise be total darkness without power. six more bring the death toll to 29. as sheriff's officials comb through the debris, there is fear more bodies could be found.

>> these are challenging investigations and autopsies because you are dealing with the remains of humans who have been burned. in some cases you may only have bones. >> reporter: which makes identification that much more challenging. >> there is nothing left. all my neighbors except one is gone. >> reporter: gary green stayed behind to protect his home in comical. one of those dead is his friend. >> she lived up the street from me and went to church with us. yeah, she didn't get out. >> reporter: they spent the day working to contain the fire. >> making sure that things are completely extinguished. we don't want any new flare-ups. >> reporter: dozens belonging to firefighters and officers themselves. >> i was talking to one deputy. he lost his house, lost everything. and he said i wouldn't want to be anywhere else. i need to be out here helping. >> despite these difficult circumstances, this community is
