live, where you live, this is is abc 7 news. escaping the flames and facing a new crisis, hundr hundr find refuge in a walmart parking lot. >> even in the dark, you can see the smokey haze from the campfire. san francisco saw the poorest air quality day since the fire smoke started to blanket the bay area. in the east bay, it's not much better, we have live team coverage from the impact of the campfire smoke. we are live in livermore. >> reporter: yeah, that is right, usually when you drive down the 580 corridor, you can see mount diablo, not tonight, nothing but thick smoke. jorge gonzalez and his son made

doppler 7, it's the live satellite picture showing you how intense the smoke has been. i want to show you where the smoke layer was spilling over in to the region as you will notice, all afternoon long. now, that thick smoke, was so bad, and in livermore, on live doppler 7, we were picking it up on radar this afternoon, that was not a good thing, it's where the worst of the air quality remains this afternoon and this evening. 2:26 in terms of the par particular late matter. anything over 150 is and you are unhealthy, it's unhealthy for the rest of you, napa saw some improvement, it's poor right now. visibility is down to 2-1/2 miles, watch out for the community, wind is part of the problem, i will be back to talk before the spare the air alert and the air quality advisory that is going to remain until friday. >> thanks, very much. >> tonight, the butte county has

peninsula, there's a proposal that is so controversial, they have moved the meeting to a theater to handle the crowd that wanted to have their say. they talked about why the district may close several schools. >> reporter: frustrated, stud t students parents and teachers filled the meeting over proposed school closures and mergers. they are facing a deficit of $10 million on the next ten years. they say they cannot sustain schools with less than 400 students enrolled. >> the school district has lost 2,000 students to three charter schools that operate in the school district and family as the are moving outside of the bay area because of the high cost of living. >> we are mo-- we have 300 students. >> reporter: she has been a teacher in the school for 17

apps. >> as the app popularity it has evidence that it could make traffic worse. it's been a while since we have shown you the don't trust your app sign. the indication of a problem that was more extreme. >> they are making things worse, because they are sending vehicles and motorists in to neighborhoods they were not intended or designed for. >> when the highway slows down, the apps send traffic on alternate routes, so those routes get backed up and so do surrounding streets of. >> there's so many commuters trying get on to 680, it's horrible. >> state of the art models show that the impact can go well beyond a single neighborhood. >> this shows in some circumstances, apps make it worse. >> the director of institution

of transportation studies, shows the top level with 20% of drivers using the app and the bottom is regular traffic with no apps. over two hours, using real traffic data, the traffic with apps has worse long-term congestion than the traffic with no apps. >> this problem is growing and it's not going to cure itself. >> he thinks the app should be required to cooperate with government traffic agencies to improve traffic for the good of all, not just the individual drivers. >> and they are fighting back. >> we monitor traffic on a daily basis and run tests. >> engineers watch the apps to see where they are routing drivers, just before 3:00, it's sending driving in to a residential neighborhood. >> we have high school traffic and it's sending the motorists in to high school traffic. >> google maps shows drivers that they can turn their 38

good air quality, right now, it's someplaces around tahoe, and parts of southern california. here's a look at what you can expect tomorrow, smokey conditions, unhealthful ayers and areas of low visibility. that means you will need extra time for the morning community. poor to unhealthy tomorrow, poor, friday, saturday and sunday, and all the way through friday, we have the air quality advisory, the spare the air alert as well, so, keep it in mind, avoid exposure if you can by staying in doors. the mask will only protect you so much. a murky view from the sfo camera, more smoke visibility related delays tomorrow. we have clear skies right now, but the smoke will continue to impact us. temperatures 30s, 40s at this hour, and los gatos at 50. a live look, looking towards the bay lights in san francisco, smokey, hazy the next few days and slight improvement with cooler weather this weekend and it looks like rain next week.
