it this time yesterday morning it's worse today. >> very unhealthy category yesterday. livermore is at it right now. places like the santa cruz mountains where it's moderate. a small pocket of cleaner air there along the sonoma county coast. it is poor to unhealthy. it means the effects, you have got to be feeling them now. not just spare the air. poor air quality. at times we can have spare the air. we don't quite make it. we don't quite make it. we're making it. the temperatures in my accuweather 12-hour planner. here's alexis. >> i am hearing about a new problem. we have a minor collision in

lanes three and four. that would be just those first cash lanes on the other side of the carpool lanes, which are open now. i believe right here is where we have an issue at the actual toll booths. we don't have any metering lights. overall, that is looking okay. westbound 580, tracy to dublin, in the red at 55 minutes. antioch to concord or southbound 101, san rafael to san francisco. alexis, thanks. another tragic update from the camp fire. crews found eight more victims in faparadise. that means 56 people have died. >> there is a townhall meeting at 7:00 tonight in chico at the laxon auditorium. the fire has burned 138,000 acres. the latest update is 35% contained. that hasn't moved very much in the past couple of days. here's more numbers officials

gave last night. 52,000 people remain evacuated. 8,700 homes are destroyed. 5,400 personnel continue to fight the fire. the neuer broken out at a shelter. evacuees at orville church on the nazarene showing symptoms. lab results aren't quite in yet. the list of those missing is 130. at one point it was more than 200 people. butte county sheriff's office is constantly updating it. >> in the face of tragedy comes stories of kindness and generosity as well. this photo behind us shows a couple who took in a 93-year-old world war ii veteran. >> lee left his home in paradise

and drove to oroville, who was handing out burgers to wildfire evacuees. she invited him to live with her and her boyfried. he refused and slept in his car the first night. then the sheriff evacuated the area where he was parked. grant gave him no choice but to come home with her and can stay as long as he likes. you can see smoke over the area. >> this is sutro cam. a thick layer of smoke over the city. san mateo bridge. a bit of haze over the streetligh streetlights. very similar situation at the bay bridge toll plaza. that is not fog. that is haze. that is making things a little blurry to see on your screen. >> on that note, an emergency shelter for the homeless to escape the smoke will stay open as long as it's needed. st. anthony's opened doors to people who suffer from respiratory problems. a total of 65 beds are available.

as of right now, the three campuses for cal state east bay are closed today. san jose state will not open today or tomorrow. san francisco stated is closed through saturday. it's all because of that unhealthy air we're talking about. if more schools close, we should hear about that within the next hour or so. another note, berkeley half marathon scheduled for this sunday is canceled because of the poor air quality. organizers say you can still go to the expo at sports basement they're putting on. a portion of the sale will be given to fire victims in the bay valley. and marin county and san francisco is canceled this weekend. the $30,000 prize will be given to the camp fire evacuation relief fund. >> that is a nice way to do it. an easy way to check the air quality is going to abc7news.com. we have this link on our front page. a map updates every five minutes and shows you the air where you

live. you can get this on our map. we will talk more about our conditions in a few moments. >> it looks like bart could be a step closer to creating a second transbay tube and possibly 24-hour service. >> abc 7 news reporter jobina fortson is live. before we get the too excited, this is still, if it happens, years away? >> reporter: yes. everybody, don't cheer just yet. bart officials are presenting an update on their plan at their 9:00 a.m. board meeting. right now it's a little too early to call it a tube. so they are calling it the transbay rail crossing. it's going to cover all of this area you see on the map here. and then some in the region. bart tweeted out this photo of a train running under the golden gate bridge. that piqued some interest. it has an opportunity to create a one-seat ride connecting the peninsula, silicon valley, san francisco with the east bay,

sacramento and central valley communities and double bart bay capacity and provide crowd relief for market street stations. this is the potential for 24-hour service. but sf gate reports that is not likely to happen. bart is planning to use a feasibility study to narrow down multiple options for the second crossing. the next is to award a contract for the study in 2019. again, if all goes as planned, they're hoping this will start, the construction, that is, ten years from now. jobina fortson, abc 7 news. >> still a long wail to go. jobina, thank you. in the south bay, new questions in the disappearance of the 49ers fan who vanished during monday night's football game in santa clara. officers searched the area of ian powers's last known location he yesterday. amanda del castillo has details. >> reporter: poor air quality prevented any possibility of air support in the search for ian

powers. however, smoke didn't stop a ground crew of 40 officers. police still need to gather exterior surveillance and search waterways from the sky. >> we have done an in-depth investigation thus far as to his whereabouts, his last known location, any activity, including financial, as well as social media since the last time he was last in contact with his family. >> reporter: powers was last seen at monday night's football game, which he attended with his girlfriend and her kids. he went to the bathroom, sent a few texts and video chatted with his girlfriend before vanishing. his uncle shawn powers was on site wednesday. >> deep in my heart, i know it's not looking good. >> reporter: the search for powers continues thursday. all right. i have one area that does not have unhealthy air this morning. it's the reporting station in santa rosa. you can see the yellow dot to the north, northeast of town. let me broaden it out.

>> los angeles police arrested michael avenatti on domestic violence charges yesterday. he's out of jail on $50,000 bond. police have not released the details surrounding his arrest. >> in today's gma first look, an investigation in texas after claims that a white professor called police on a black student for having her feet on a seat. stkpwhraor in first look, this is biology 2053 at the university of texas in san antonio on monday. for reasons students say they didn't understand, anita moss called on school police to remove this young black woman from class, all of this allegedly because of something that happened during class last week. the student that was removed had her feet up on a chair, which upset the faculty member. that's when the teacher asked the student to remove her feet. by all accounts, she did. dr. moss then attempted to send this e-mail to the student

saying she wasn't allowed back into class until the two had talked. but the school says the teacher sent the note to the wrong person. so on monday, when the student showed up, the teacher called security. we'll have more into the school's investigation into this matter at 7:00 a.m. with your gma first look, abc news, atlanta. >> a student at robbed him on campus. the two men walked up, punched him, and stole his cell phone around 12:30 tuesday afternoon. it happened in parking lot c. the victim says the two men did not have weapons, and he could not provide a detailed description. now some really good news. in the east bay, a mother and her day-old infant are in good condition thanks to the quick actions of an oakland police officer on tuesday. the woman is homeless. she was living in her car. she gave birth by the side of the road. i want to warn you the body cam shows the baby covered in dirt.

salesforce plans to occupy more space in the tower which will be built near the transit center. these renderings show what an empty lot could look like in five years. according to the chronicle, the skyscraper will have offices, condos and hotel rooms. salesforce has already signed a lease for 325,000 square feet of space. in the north bay, sonoma state university plans to buy a petaluma apart complex to house employees. according to the press democrat, the california state university board of trustees has approved the university's $42 million acquisition of the marina crossing apartments. the two acre property includes 90 units. it is under construction adjacent to the arena. public heating officials are under way to name the turkey

it's not a good feeling. >> at some point he says he feels so bad for these people and then he says i am one of these people. and he is. he lost his home to the camp fire like thousands of others have. >> so tough to see that. and the lengths some people went to escape the flames. look at this. a cal fire deputy chief came across a woman in a wheelchair. she doesn't have anything with her except her tiny little dog tucked in her arm. there we go. we dropped that graphic for you. you can see the puppy in her lap. it's not clear where she was headed. she was taken to the hospital where she appeared to be okay. meanwhile, this morning investors will be watch to go see if pg&e stock continues to slide. yesterday shares dropped 22% after pg&e indicated it could be in financial distress if investigators say it's to blame for the camp fire. with back-to-back years of catastrophic fire events, former

commissioner catherine sandoval says action needs to be taken to provide reliable power and protect the public safety. >> these broad sweeps of wires and all of this vegetation isn't mixing well. and so as we're looking at how do we have to change, there's going to be real questions about how do we figure out the financing so that we can keep the golden state's economy viable. >> among the possible safety improvements, removing all vegetation near power lines. and new systems to turn off smaller sections of the power grid during high winds. go fund me is donating $150,000 of its own money to provide relief to fire victims. the company based in redwood city and fund raiders have already brought in $15 million for fire survivors. airbnb hosts are helping displaced camp fire survivors. the ceo and co-founder tweeted 1,300 hosts have offered their homes to evacuees at no charge.

from someone who said that he was from the louis vuitton school. the caller asked u.p.s. to stop deliveries temporarily because its basement storage area was flooded and someone would come by and pick up its shipments. for three days a driver purportedly from louis vuitton made the pickups here at u.p.s. and then disappeared with hundreds of thousands of dollars of expensive louis vuitton products. by the end of the week they asked why deliveries had stopped. >> there has to be some protocol for u.p.s. establish confirm that the caller is legitimate. >> how did this happen? both u.p.s. and louis vuitton declined comment. sfpd said their investigation is continuing. i have a feeling someone is about to get fired. zuckerberg ordered his management team to only use

a dozen oil companies. they claim oil companies are responsible for global warming which delays the start of crabbing season and hammers the industry. this year crabbing season in a section north of bodega head state marine reserve has been delayed to at least december. oil companies have not yet responded to the suit. new technology and sfo could mean shorter security lines for you. they unveiled automated screening lanes. you put everything into a bin, even larger carry-ons. they push them through the x-ray machine. if the machine notices something in one bag, it then gets moved to the side so the rest can keep on going. this is a pilot test in terminal 3. it could be eventually expanded to other terminals. >> i used the same system in houston, and it seemed to work faster. >> whatever it takes. speed that up and keep it safe as well. i have a problem on 80 at
