>> reporter: a bombshell lawsuit filed against dartmouth college and the women behind it are speaking out. >> it was certainly a boys' club environment, so there -- it was a highly sexualized culture. >> reporter: the complaint alleges for more than a decade the ivy league ignored complaints about professors todd heatherton, william kelley and paul whalen. accusing the men of forming a predator's club that at times included hot tub parties and meeting students at bars. it alleges that he assaulted christina. >> i don't remember waking up the next morning. it was the next morning bill kelly told me we had sex. >> reporter: the same professor allegedly used real cocaine in class as part of a demonstration on addiction. the plaintiffs all highly accomplished scientists. who describe a 21st century "animal house" a culture the women say the school was slow to address.

>> it wasn't until i began to learn about other stories of women getting hurt in the department that i realized this wasn't an isolated case. this was something happening to other women. >> reporter: dartmouth denies wrongdoing and tells abc news, "as a result of the misconduct we found earlier this year by the three pbs faculty members, we took unprecedented steps towards revoking their tenure and terminating their employment". >> reporter: heatherton denies the allegations and says that he also regrets behavior that was construed as sexual. linsey davis, abc news, new york. >> linsey giving a weather report as well, as you take a look there. it was rough outside. the entertainment community is remembering kim porter, the longtime girlfriend of the rap mogul sean diddy combs. >> reports say porter was found dead in los angeles yesterday. the 47-year-old was the mother of three of diddy's children. the two broke up in 2007 after a 13-year on again off again relationship. the georgia native was also an

t the trio at the center of it all under arrest. ? the paying it forward story might seem too good to be true. unfortunately, it was. >> reporter: so many bought into the story of homeless johnny bobbitt offering kate mcclure his last $20 after her car ran out of gas. mcclure and her boyfriend mark d'amico going public. >> we were thinking, what if we started a gofundme for this guy. >> it's like winning the lottery. >> reporter: trips to vegas, high-end handbags, even a bmw. the couple previously met bobbitt at a local casino and staged that photo that led to $400,000 in donations. >> it worked in a very big way but it was fictitious and

illegal and there are consequences. >> reporter: a gofundme spokesperson says all of the 14,000 people who donated to this campaign will receive a full refund. whit johnson, abc news, mount holly, new jersey. >> our thanks to whit. a federal lawsuit charges dartmouth college let three professors create an animal house-like culture in their department. >> seven women are suing the ivy league school for $70 million. they say science professors groped students, invited them to hot tub parties. all three left dartmouth this year. breaking overnight, news that wikileaks founder julian assange could soon be prosecuted by the u.s. assange has been hold up in the ecuadorian embassy in london since 2012. >> "the wall street journal" reports that the justice department is preparing a case against assange and prosecutors are increasingly optimistic he will be tried in a u.s. courtroom. we learned about the possible case from a filing submitted in

federal court in which, get this, prosecutors accidentally disclosed assange's name not once but twice. an attorney for assange tells abc news it is inexplicable that assange would be charged without prior notice. and four of the most highly trained members of the american military, including navy s.e.a.l.s are now charged in the death of an army green beret. the case started in june of last year during a deployment in the african nation of mali. abc's brad mielke has details. good morning, brad. >> hey, guys. we're not just talking about navy s.e.a.l.s, we're talking about s.e.a.l. team 6, one of the most elite squads in the world. two s.e.a.l.s and special ops marines are facing a court court marshall for allegedly

murdering a green beret while they were all stationed together on a mission. i spoke to abc's chief global affairs capability martha raddatz who explained how this all went down. >> they were in african, these green berets with logan melgar. in the middle of the night, they banged down his door, in the darkness, they kicked in his door. it was locked. they don't talk about a motive, they just say intent to charge melgar. another charge says hazing. they broke down the door, according to documents, duct taped melgar, the green beret, put him in a chokehold and he eventually died according to the charging documents of strangulation. >> martha told me the most horrifying detail. remember, these guys are so well-trained. the charging documents say one of them performed a medical procedure on the victim's throat. this time they say it wasn't to save a life, he was already dead and they were trying to hide the damage. we will have more on the military's reaction on "start here" later this morning. listen to it on apple podcasts or your favorite podcasts app. kendis? lynda?

number of people missing has more than doubled from about 300 to at least 631. the death toll is growing to at least 63 people. fire crews are making some progress, slowing the flames near populated areas. the camp fire, however, is about 40% contained. roy clark performed everywhere from the grand ole opry to the soviet union, but the country music hall-of-famer is remembered for his time on the variety show "hee haw." clark died at his home yesterday in tulsa due to complications from pneumonia. he had several hits, but he said his 24-year run on "hee haw" capped off his career. roy clark was 85 years old. >> such a familiar face to so many over the decades. >> even a little kid like myself in the bronx was watching "hee haw" and knew about clark. president trump will take a break from politics this afternoon to award the presidential medal of freedom. >> among the recipients, the late elvis presley.

frantic phone call in the early hours of the morning. >> athens county 911, what is your emergency? >> hello, i think my friend drank a little too much. >> reporter: the caller, a friend of colin wiant, an 18-year-old pledge at ohio state university's sigma pi fraternity. >> is he responsive? >> he was. >> okay. is he still breathing. >> reporter: the 911 calls suggests wiant was so inebriated he couldn't even stand up. >> we'll carry him out. he's pretty in and out. >> well, let's not carry him out yet because it's really cold and the squad takes a little bit. let's just leave him there and i'll send an officer down that way. squad is coming too. >> reporter: wiant did not recover. he was pronounced dead at an athens area hospital. accusing the fraternity of conduct that puts the health and safety of your members at risk. wiant was in his freshman year at ohio. an honor student, he played

they were like four blocks away. >> it has been a mess and it has also been deadly. the storm that is dumping snow, ice and freezing rain straight up and down the east coast and beyond, making for a treacherous ride home for millions of people. >> yeah, take a look. this is what it looks like at this hour in new york. the rain is moving through after heavy wet snow and high winds brought traffic to a standstill. the scariest part, toppled hundreds of trees. >> this was a mess, the commuters packed into new york's port authority bus terminal like sardines, that place is a mess on any given day, so add this. wow, thousands of people there waiting for busses running well behind schedule. the storm blamed for seven deaths now. now moving off the coast but not before another blast of snow during this morning's commute. abc's rob marciano gets us started. >> reporter: a white-knuckle drive for drivers as a deadly winter storm wreaks havoc across nearly half of the country. the storm hits new york city at the height of the evening commute. >> watch out. watch out!

>> reporter: multiple cars crashing on the george washington bridge. we've been stuck on the road now for hours. and just take a look. that is the george washington bridge into new york city. no car is moving. for much of the northeast it's a traffic nightmare. >> reporter: washington, d.c. blanketed early in snow. in maryland, state police responding to 300 crashes in just six hours. in the st. louis area, cars fishtailing, even spinning out of control on the slick streets. up to nearly 10 inches of snow keeping plows busy on the roads. and deicers busy at the airport. more than 1,300 flights cancelled and more than 5,600 others delayed across the country in the storm's wake. hundreds of thousands losing power across the storm zone. snowy, icy roads to blame for multiple crashes and at least four deaths in arkansas. and in mississippi, two people killed wednesday when this tour bus on its way to a casino overturned. and it is pretty rare to have snow-covered streets here in manhattan in the middle of winter, let alone the middle of november.

out. by mid morning many in the new york city area should be seeing drier weather. by the afternoon, we will just be cold and blustery. in terms of snowfall totals, here's how much we'll tally up by the time the storm is finished. many spots through central pa and central new york, northern new england, could see upwards of a foot. kendis? lynda? >> thanks so much. the senate race in florida is still too close to call and now headed for a legally-required hand recount. rick scott is leading incumbent senator bill nelson by fewer than 13,000 votes. broward and palm beach counties missed the deadline to turn in the results of the machine count with broward just two minutes late. gillum says it is not over until every legal vote is counted. and democrats have flipped another house seat in orange county, california, once known as reagan country. katie porter is the projected

winner against trump supporter and gop incumbent memy walters. a protege of massachusetts senator elizabeth warren. she campaigned on a liberal agenda and in direct opposition to the president's policies. president trump plans to travel to california tomorrow to visit the victims of the wildfires burning at both ends of the state. his trip comes as the death toll from the camp fire in northern california has climbed to at least 63, but here is the shocking headline this morning. the number of missing soaring to more than 630 people. 630 people possibly missing. in the south, the extent of the damage is just starting to sink in. here is abc's maggie rulli. >> reporter: as thousands return home in california, they're left reliving those terrifying moments that began one week ago. >> i'm talking a wall of flames. it was a wall of flames. >> reporter: christen thames says she fled with just the clothes on her back. >> you don't think that it's going to happen to you, but,

seriously, the next time, i don't care how far away the fire is, when they say evacuate, we're getting out. >> reporter: up and down california, homes and entire neighborhoods now reduced to rubble. in paradise, a town leveled, many without homes have built a new community. >> this is going to be awhile that people are out here probably, you know, trying to get their lives back together. >> reporter: california's governor and secretary of the interior ryan zinke saw more of the extensive and heartbreaking damage up close in southern california. >> next we've got to recover. that recovery will happen. we've got to get on the side of nature. we can't just fight it. >> it's unsustainable to have this happen year after year. >> reporter: we're now seeing the cleanup begin. many burned-out cars are getting towed away and homes that are now just lots are getting checked for dangers like gas leaks. for many of these hard-hit areas it it's going to take months if not years for them to fully rebuild. kristen thames returned to calabasas finding she had

something to come home to. we're told to expect more moisture in the air today. firefighters say they have the upper hand on this fire here in southern california. now the focus turns on how to rebuild, in many cases rebuilding a new home, getting new cars and sometimes even rebuilding an entirely new neighborhood. lynda? kendis? >> maggie, thanks so much. a district attorney in rural alabama is recovering this morning after being wounded in an ambush style attack. officials say greg griggers suffered a facial wound when a gunman opened fire as griggers sat in his car the suspect was a former alabama state trooper who was killed by law enforcement at the scene. once questioned about firing shots into the home of the judge more than 20 years ago. investigators are looking into possible motives. griggers is expected to make a full recovery. the estimated 48 million people who will be driving for thanksgiving will be seeing some relief at the pump. plunging oil prices have led the national average for a gallon of

regular gas to drop 22 cents a gallon over the last month. right now gas is under $2 a gallon at some stations from ohio to texas and analysts expect prices to continue falling into next month. despite that, gas prices are still about 12 cents higher per gallon than they were last thanksgiving. and here in new york, a record-setting art auction, christie's just sold this massive 10-foot-wide painting by david hockney for over $90 million, 9-0. that makes it the most expensive piece of art sold by a living artist. the previous record for a painting, just a measly $58 million. >> how? why? >> 90 million. >> we are in the wrong line of work. >> there is a tv documentary coming out about the price of art and how it got to this really high level. >> yeah. >> i'm actually interested to see that because $90 million? >> that's a racket.

>> reporter: it was the good samaritan story that captivated the nation, seeming almost too good to be true and authorities now saying it was. >> reporter: i was driving down 95 and ran out of gas. so i pulled over on to the side of the road. >> reporter: kate mcclure stranded on the outskirts of philadelphia when homeless veteran johnny bobbitt jr. came to her rescue. >> reporter: he walked up and said, get back in the car, lock the doors, you know, i'll be back. >> reporter: spending his last $20 to buy her gas. >> you know, she needed the help and she took the help. >> reporter: with the title "paying it forward" the gofundme page and the story of bobbitt's selflessness went viral. the couple's original goal of $10,000 quickly ballooned to more than $400,000. >> it's like winning the lottery. >> reporter: but today, a shocking twist. >> the entire campaign was predicated on a lie. >> reporter: authorities say it was all a coordinated scam from the start. the cover photo on the page, staged. all three of them were in on the elaborate hoax.

>> she did not run out of gas on an i-95 off-ramp and he did not spend his last $20 to help her. rather, they conspired to pass off a fake feel-good story that would compel donors to contribute to their cause and it worked. >> reporter: all three charged with conspiracy. prosecutors claiming the idea could have come from bobbitt himself. >> in 2012, johnny bobbitt posted a remarkably similar story on his facebook page out of north carolina, where he reported that he helped a woman who had both run out of gas and had a flat tire at a walmart, spent his supper money to get her on her way and fix her flat tire. i don't think that that's a coincidence. >> reporter: in a statement to abc news, gofundme writing in part, that while this type of behavior by an individual is extremely rare it's unacceptable and clearly it has consequences. committing fraud, whether it

takes place on or offline, is against the law." the company also stating that campaigns with misuse make up less than 0.10 of 1% of all campaigns. the company saying all donors will receive a full refund. crowdsourcing websites have raised billions of dollars for good. there are steps you can take to make sure your money is going to the right place. the better business bureau recommending you learn all you can about the charity or the individual. do a reverse image search on any photos used in the campaign and caution that scammers often put up multiple campaigns across several platforms. all three accused liars who are said to have preyed on america's generosity now awaiting their trial. i'm whit johnson in mount holly, new jersey. >> it makes you question everything. >> humanity. >> yes.

operations command broke into melgar's room while he was streaking. the names of the accused have not yet been released. there is some confusion about the fate of an eighth grade spanish teacher from north carolina who is missing in mexico. family and friends say he died in late october at the hands of organized crime, but mexican authorities aren't going that far just yet. they're conducting dna tests with members of braxton andrew's family and won't confirm his death until his body is found. florida is still not done tallying up votes, ten days, mind you, after the election. now they'll be counting by hand because that's quicker. the republican governor rick scott's slim lead in the senate race over incumbent democrat bill nelson was narrow enough to trigger a manual recount. broward and palm beach counties missed yesterday's deadline. the governor's race appears to be over with the republican ron desantis holding a big enough lead over andrew gillum to declare victory, but gillum said

filed against dartmouth college and the women behind it are speaking out. >> it was certainly a boys' club environment, so there -- it was a highly sexualized culture. >> reporter: the complaint alleges for more than a decade the ivy league ignored complaints about professors todd heatherton, william kelley and paul whalen. accusing the men of forming a predator's club that at times included hot tub parties and meeting students at bars. it alleges that kelley assaulted christina. >> i don't remember waking up the next morning. it was the next morning bill kelley told me we had sex. >> reporter: the same professor allegedly used real cocaine in class as part of a demonstration on addiction. the plaintiffs all highly accomplished scientists. who describe a 21st century "animal house" a culture the women say the school was slow to address.

>> it wasn't until i began to learn about other stories of women getting hurt in the department that i realized this wasn't an isolated case. this was something happening to other women. >> reporter: dartmouth denies wrongdoing and tells abc news, "as a result of the misconduct we found earlier this year by the three pbs faculty members, we took unprecedented steps towards revoking their tenure and terminating their employment". >> reporter: heatherton denies the allegations and says that he also regrets behavior that was construed as sexual. linsey davis, abc news, new york. >> linsey giving a weather report as well, as you take a look there. it was rough outside. the entertainment community is remembering kim porter, the longtime girlfriend of the rap mogul sean diddy combs. >> reports say porter was found dead in los angeles yesterday. the 47-year-old was the mother of three of diddy's children. the two broke up in 2007 after a 13-year on again off again relationship.
