we'll begin with that nor'easter that is bringing an early blast causing absolute chaos. this is a live look at albany, new york. snow coming down, continuing right now. >> the storm shutting down bridges and major roads during rush hour like the george washington bridge between new york and new jersey. it was at a standstill for hours. some getting out of their cars and walking instead. >> the snow and ice causing hundreds of accidents, thousands of flights canceled or delayed and now more snow is on the way for millions. rob starts us off there in albany tracking the storm for us. good morning, rob. >> hey, good morning, robin. snow now coming off the roofs of some of the buildings here in the capitol region even as we speak. we knew this was coming. we knew it would snow hard but coming in november we figured the ground is warm enough tofuer as icame in.

context, d.c. had 1.4 inches, the biggest snow since 1989, 1967, new york city, 6 inch, the biggest since the 1800s and clearly it's not over yet. >> reporter: this morning, millions of people across the northeast readying for another treacherous commute as a deadly winter storm wreaks havoc on nearly half the country. parts of the east getting over a foot of snow. >> i don't know if anybody was quite prepared. it's not even thanksgiving. >> reporter: this mid-november bout with winter arriving during the peak of the evening rush hour, causing crashes and delays into the night. >> a little bit too soon for me. >> it's way too early and it's messing up everybody's lives. >> reporter: students at this new jersey middle school forced to stay overnight at the school. in maryland, state police responding to more than 300 crashes in just six hours. and in st. louis, cars fishtailing out on the roads, even spinning out in the middle of traffic. some drivers deciding it was safer to abandon their cars on the side of the road.

even i had to jump out and push a car once we got to albany. hundreds of thousands losing power across the storm zone as trees come crashing down. >> ah! watch out! watch out! >> reporter: branches, some with leaves still on them, buckling under the weight of the snow. >> you heard the crack and he was like, oh, shoot. >> reporter: the slippery conditions even causing a few tumbles. >> oh, geez. oh, my gosh. are you okay? >> yes. >> reporter: people tumbling, cars skidding out, trees and branches coming down. one of the biggest problems in the new york area with these trees is a lot of them still have leaves on them, so they basically are catch basins for the snow and that added extra weight and took so many tree limbs down and we continue to see this heavy, wet snow come down around us here in the capitol region. over 300,000 people without power, michael. this is a mid-november snowstorm for the record books, my friend. >> all right, thank you, rob. stay away from the trees, my friend.

as we've seen, the storm is leading to dangerous and messy commutes across the country. gio benitez is out on the roads north of new york city and, gio, you got stuck in traffic for hours last night. but how are the conditions this morning? >> reporter: well, michael, it's better than it was yesterday but it's still a mess out here. i'm going to hold up my iphone so you can see what's happening on the road right now. we've got that snow melting right now and you've got the rain falling so the real concern is going to be black ice on the roads, that dangerous slippery invisible black ice on the roads. you know, as you said, i was stuck on the road for five hours yesterday like so many of you. the commute home today, probably very slow too. the weather bringing rush hour traffic to a standstill in and around new york city. at manhattan's port authority bus terminal armed guards stood on the escalators trying to prevent a stampede. thousands were gathered there tightly packed waiting for their ride home.

in north bergen, new jersey, buses got stuck in the snow. people getting out of their cars to do the only thing they could do, push the buses out. then there's the george washington bridge in and out of manhattan. an accident there causing parts of the bridge to shut down during the evening commute. some people were even seen walking across it. my team and i were stuck in that mess. we've been stuck on the road now for hours, and just take a look. that is the george washington bridge into new york city. no car is moving. for much of the northeast it's a traffic nightmare. finally as we approached hour four, some relief. the george washington bridge just re-opened. we are beginning that slow crawl back into new york city. even so, we would sit in traffic for another hour as this fall snowstorm turned into rain. all right. and so when you're looking at this, you're asking were cities it turns out we're hearing some of these city buses didn't have

the chains around the tires to get through the snow, but, dec january, not mid-november. >> it came a little early for everyone. okay, gio, thanks very much. the storm is causing headaches at airports across the country. thousands of flights already canceled or delayed. more will be affected this morning. abc's erielle reshef is at newark airport in new jersey with the latest. one of those nights that had passengers sleeping in the terminal. >> reporter: that's right, george. that snowstorm turned air travel into a nightmare for so many people who were forced to camp out at airports like this one. we've seen people still sleeping sitting up, trying to get comfortable. overnight, those images of people sleeping on cots, on chairs. we even talked to one woman who slept on the concrete floor and we know that jfk and newark airport tweeted overnight warning people about the treacherous road conditions getting in and out of the terminals. that caused a lot of the delays, three-hour delays at jfk, but got a whole lot worse at the height of the storm, up to 2,000

cancellations, 7,500 delays and this morning, things are looking up, but there are still plenty of problems at the airport. hundreds of delays and cancellations still expected. so people heading to the airport should give themselves plenty of time and of course, check with their carriers before they head out, robin. >> all right, erielle, thank you very much. didn't you say you had to walk to work last night? >> 28 blocks through the park. i haven't worked that hard in a long time. we're going to go back to rob in albany for the latest on the storm's track and timing. good morning again, rob. >> good morning, robin. yeah, a lot of people will be working hard just to get to work this morning. not only with the snow, sleet and rain but with the wind you probably n'easter as this plow truck goes behind me. snow will end from west to east during the late morning hours. windy, cold behind us. more in the way of lake-effect snow and another clipper system coming down the pipe for saturday. an additional 3 to 6 inches on top of what we've already had here as the snow continues to

come down here in albany. michael. >> all right, thank you, rob. and now out west to the latest on those california wildfires. a stunning new development this morning, authorities say the number of people missing in the northern camp fire has skyrocketed now to more than 600. families posting photos and details about their loved ones trying to find them and the death toll from that fire alone, the worst in california history, has now climbed to 63. some 500 rescue workers are on the ground there searching through the rubble in the town of paradise. president trump is set to visit the fire zone and meet with victims on saturday. the president initially criticized california's forest management, blaming it for the severity of the fire. okay, michael, we move to that bombshell revelation overnight that could have big implications for the russia investigation. it was revealed that federal prosecutors accidentally disclosed that they have a secret indictment of wikileaks founder julian assange. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas tracking the case and, pierre, we know that special counsel robert mueller has been focused on wikileaks. >> reporter: that's right,

george. the wikileaks founder, julian assange, appears to be facing new criminal charges. it looks like his name accidentally was included in a recently unsealed case. we don't know what the new potential charges are, but the implications are enormous because special counsel bob mueller has claimed that wikileaks worked with russian hackers to publish e-mails stolen from the democratic national committee during the 2016 presidential campaign, george. >> officials have been poised for the possible indictment and arrest of assange any day. he's in that ecuadorian embassy in london which creates a very complicated situation. >> reporter: that's right. assange who became controversial for publishing some of the u.s. government's most sensitive secrets about electronic surveillance fled to the ecuadorian embassy after facing sexual assault allegations in sweden. that case became closed but assange is still fearful the u.s. will try to get him. he's been inside that embassy since 2012, george. if there are new charges against assange it raises the possibility he could be extradited. we believe robert mueller wants access to assange and would love to get him back on u.s. soil.

george. >> pierre thomas, thanks very much. robin. and george, now to the election battle in florida over the governor and senate seats there. a new high-stakes recount getting under way this morning. a machine recount ended yesterday leaving republicans in the lead in the races for governor and senator, but the margin in the senate race is so close, the ballots will now be counted one more time by hand. governor rick scott holds the razor-thin lead in that race over senator bill nelson. >> about 12,000 votes. we also have breaking news out of north korea where a detained american who claimed to be working for the cia has been released and the regime has announced the creation of a secret new weapon which increases their military strength and martha raddatz has the latest. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. the announcement was made with fanfare overnight on north korean state media saying kim jong-un had visited the test site of what they called an ultra modern, highly significant tactical weapon which they said

protects their land and greatly strengthens the combat powers of their military. state media did not show the weapon, but u.s. officials say it was not a missile launch. it was a smaller weapon, but it still could raise tensions with washington. it's been five months since that summit and north korea has not made verifiable steps to shut down its nuclear program. in a meeting between secretary of state pompeo and his counterpart last week, it was canceled by the north koreans who said there were scheduling problems, george. >> and martha, what do we know about the release of this detained american? >> reporter: this is an american who they say crossed into north korea last month illegally by china, and they claim the american told him he did so at the direction of the cia but say they plan to release him so mixed messages from north korea today. >> trying to have it both ways. martha raddatz, thanks very much. michael? all right, george. now to allegations of a real-life "animal house" on an

ivy league campus. women claiming three professors at dartmouth sexually assaulted or harassed them and linsey davis has more on the lawsuit. linsey, they say the school knew about it for years. >> reporter: good morning, michael. they claim the college knew for more than a decade. the allegations are far ranging with claims that the women were leered at, groped and sexted and they tell us the professors hired female lab assistants based on their physical attractiveness and competed to have the hottest lab. this morning, the women behind that bombshell $70 million lawsuit filed against dartmouth college are speaking out. >> it was certainly a boys club environment, so it was a highly sexualized culture. >> reporter: the complaint alleges that for more than a decade the ivy league university ignored widespread sexual harassment by tenured professors todd heatherton, william kelley and paul whalen and describes the men as forming a private predators' club with the women alleging that at times the professors groped students, conducted meetings at bars and invited students to hot tub

parties. and in march of 2015, the complaint states that william kelley sexually assaulted kristina rapuano. >> i don't remember waking up the next morning. it was at that point that bill kelley told me we had sex. >> reporter: the lawsuit claims this misconduct dates back to 2002. all seven of the plaintiffs were considered highly accomplished scientists, current and former students of dartmouth's psychology and brain sciences department which the complaint compares to a 21st century animal house, a culture the women say the college was slow to address. >> the action they took was too late and too little. >> reporter: in the fall dartmouth conducted an investigation and subsequently gave all three professors the option to resign or retire. in response to the lawsuit, dartmouth told abc news, as a result of the misconduct we found earlier this year by the three pbs faculty members, we took unprecedented steps toward revoking their tenure and terminating their employment.

dartmouth went on to say that they strongly disagree with the characters of dartmouth's actions and say they will respond with their own court filings. we reached out to all three professors. only heatherton responded and he denies playing any role in creating a toxic environment and says he regrets any behavior that the women const >> no joke. all right, thank you, linsey. now to new details about that mysterious cruise ship death. an american woman on a trip with her husband going overboard and now we're learning more about the fbi investigation. victor oquendo is in miami with the latest on that. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the fbi is working with police in aruba on this one, but how and why this woman fell to her death is still a mystery. this morning, the fbi along with authorities in aruba are working to determine how an american woman fell to her death on a princess cruise. aruba's public prosecutor telling abc news they're looking at every angle including

possible homicide. they've conducted a forensic investigation and an autopsy, but have not revealed the results, only saying she died of unnatural causes. the 52-year-old woman was traveling with her husband. officials tell us he is not a suspect at this time and is still on the island voluntarily. according to reports in aruba, it was a gruesome scene. the woman plunged from the upper deck of the ship falling 14 stories onto a life boat. >> cruise ships typically do have security cameras. now, were there cameras where this incident occurred? that remains to be seen. >> reporter: the 3,600 -passenger ship was sailing between curacao and aruba at the time. princess cruises said, we are deeply saddened by this incident and offer our sincere condolences to the family and those affected. this caribbean cruise turned deadly is almost over. the royal princess ship is now headed back here to south florida. michael? >> thank you, victor. now something we can all be thankful for ahead of thanksgiving.

your holiday road trip, it may cost you a little less. gas prices correspondent rebecca jarvis is at a gas station here in new york city with all the details. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning, michael. yeah, that's right. 54 million americans are expected to hit the roads over the thanksgiving holiday and the national average for a gallon of regular this morning is $2.65. that is 23 cents lower than prices were a month ago. in fact, in some states across the country, you can even find gas below $2 a gallon. missouri, oklahoma, ohio, louisiana, texas, these are all places with gas stations where you can pay below $2 a gallon for that gas, and the best news, michael, prices are forecast to continue dropping into the thanksgiving holiday. >> so prices are going to continue to go down. any idea how low so we can find out how far we're going to drive? >> reporter: well, you can see a few pennies lower into the next week. but here's the even better news, as we hit december, because of

but prosecutors say it was greed that unraveled a web of lies. this morning, stunning new details in the heartwarming tale of paying it forward that authorities now say was a total lie. >> the paying it forward story that drove this fund-raiser might seem too good to be true. unfortunately, it was. >> reporter: in a comprehensive press conference thursday, prosecutors say homeless veteran johnny bobbitt did not meet kate mcclure on the side of a highway instead alleging they and mark d'amico actually met at a casino and concocted an elaborate get rich quick scheme to rip off thousands of generous americans, even staging this photo of themselves at a gas station. >> she did not run out of gas on an i-95 off-ramp and he did not spend his last $20 to help her. rather, d'amico, mcclure and bobbitt conspired to pass off a fake feel-good story that would compel donors to contribute to their cause, and it worked in a very big way. >> reporter: the gofundme

campaign immediately going viral, raking in more than $400,000 in donations. >> it's like winning the lottery. >> reporter: but investigators say that less than an hour after the gofundme page went live, mcclure texted a friend saying the story was completely made up. police also say bobbitt posted a very similar good samaritan story on facebook in 2012. >> he reported that he helped a woman who had both run out of gas and had a flat tire. i don't think that's a coincidence. >> reporter: prosecutors say the group may have gotten away with it if in august bobbitt hadn't publicly accused mcclure and d'amico of using his money to fund a lavish lifestyle, spending nearly all of the money in less than five months, thousands of dollars on vacations, designer handbags and a bmw which was seized by officials. the trio now charged with theft by deception and conspiracy. gofundme announcing it will refund all of the 14,000 donors like marine veteran james tanaka who gave $250.

>> we're always looking to help other marines when we can. >> reporter: and first-time gofundme donor dawn solter who is now furious after contributing $200. >> i kind of feel like i've been scammed out of money. it's very frustrating and it's very dishonest. >> reporter: now, attorneys for the three charged in the case declined to comment. prosecutors are urging people who want to donate to crowd funding sites to do their homework and use caution but want to emphasize this was a rare and extraordinary case. they do not want to scare people away from giving to good causes. >> we wouldn't want that. whit, thanks very much. let's bring in our chief legal analyst dan abrams. i think we can all agree if this is all true, these are some pretty bad people, but what kind of legal trouble are they facing? >> they're facing up to ten years in prison each. i mean, you're talking about prosecutors who effectively have thrown the book at them. you've got one crime which is theft by deception, essentially fraud, another conspiracy charge and so they'll have to decide how do we move forward against

these three? i wonder are they going to try to get bobbitt who is actually a homeless vet -- that part is true, one of the only things that is true. are they going to try to get him to turn on the other two? >> what could they offer him? >> they can offer him no jail time. they can offer him limited prison time, et cetera. i mean, you know, this is serious stuff that he's facing, and basically they are claiming that all of them are in cahoots together, that they designed this whole plan, and with his assistance, it becomes a lot easier to prosecute the other two. >> do you think they would have gotten away with this but for this lawsuit? >> they definitely would have. the only reason that anyone knows about what really happened is because bobbitt, the homeless guy, ends up suing the other two saying, where is my cut of the share? knowing that this is all a scam, but he is basically saying, wait a sec. you guys can't get all the money. the problem is the other two had already spent the money and couldn't give it to him.

as he was becoming the superstar, he was right there next to her. i was just on the phone this morning with the godmother of their twins who happens to be a good friend of mine who couldn't even speak. she was in such tears. she had been crying all night, and they're worried about diddy because these two stayed so close even after they broke up in 2007. look at some of her last instagram posts of the family. they were celebrating holidays together. one of the last ones early this month, combs with their kids and it's just captioned, love. they were so close. he talked to her every single day still and so there's some concern about him being okay at this point. he's said to be devastated. some of the well wishes coming in, rihanna posting, we lost a real one today. 50 cent also using that word. i know puff is hit right now. he loved her for real so thiis diddy, but this is a woman who had a grace and a southern sensibility that people are talking about and a rarity in that particular business. >> absolutely.

telling her story and amy is here with that. good morning, amy. >> reporter: hey. good morning to you, robin. nichol kessinger spoke out for the first time with "the denver post" saying she approached investigators before watts was arrested, participating in multiple police interviews, and when he was finally arrested she had no doubt he did it. overnight, the woman who chris watts was having an affair with when he murdered his wife and children is speaking out. nichol kessinger sitting down for an exclusive interview with "the denver post" telling the paper, he's a liar. he lied about everything. according to kessinger, watts wooing her into an idyllic romance after he introduced himself to her at work. coming across as a good listener, soft-spoken man and thoughtful father. >> my daddy is a hero. >> reporter: kessinger noticing watts did not wear a wedding ring, saying he told her he was wrapping up a mutual divorce with his wife as his and kenanrelg

afr watts' family disappeared. >> if somebody has her, just please bring her back. i just want them back. i just want them to come back. >> reporter: suddenly nothing making sense to kessinger as watts presented himself to the world as a happily married man begging for his family's return. >> and if they're not safe right now, that's what's tearing me apart because if they are safe they're coming back. but if they're not, this has got to stop, like, somebody has to come forward. >> reporter: kessinger telling "the denver post," i found out he was still married and his wife was 15 weeks pregnant, thinking if he was able to lie to me and hide something that big, what else was he lying about? according to "the post," kessinger shocked at watts' deception and scared for his wife and daughters began interrogating watts on the disappearance of his family drilling in on the inconsistencies in his story and demanding answers. but instead of resolving her concerns, watts' responses and lack of emotion only making her more suspicious.

the next morning, with watts' family still missing, kessinger reportedly going to police. that night watts was arrested, later pleading guilty to murdering his wife and daughters and hiding their bodies on the property of the very oil company where he and kessinger first met. it is an unthinkable story. watts is scheduled to be in court on monday for sentencing. his plea deal allows him to avoid the death penalty, but so much pain and so much loss for that family. >> absolutely. >> unnecessarily. all right, thank you so much, amy. and coming up, we're going to switch gears and we're going to put some good in your morning with batkid, the young boy who had a whole city cheering for him as he saved everyone there. ♪ saved everyone there. ♪

learned he was diagnosed with leukemia. fast forward to age 5 and it was the make-a-wish foundation to the rescue with some hero-sized hope. after his treatments were over and he was in remission. they fulfilled his dream to be batkid. [ chanting ] riding the batmobile, fighting crime, even getting a key to the city of san francisco, 20,000 people watching. >> thank you, batkid! >> reporter: batkid even made an appearance on "gma." this morning, five years after miles put on the mask, his family sent us these new photos. he's in fifth gre w and completely cancer-free. he's back to being an everyday kid. they consider make-a-wish foundation part of the medicine that inspired him to stay strong and recover. miles' mom is forever grateful and she says make-a-wish is an organization that shines a light on children and families when nothing else can. >> shining that big bat signal light for this family. today miles enjoys science and robotics and plays baseball and

[ applause ] our cover story, comedian and actress amy schumer hospitalized facing pregnancy complications, the same that duchess kate faced while she was expecting, and dr. jen ashton is here with that. so tell us more. >> first of all, we have to clarify and i really want to drive this point home, hyperemesis gravidarum or hg, people say it's severe morning sickness, not really. it's severe morning sickness like a blizzard is just a few flurries. this is a very, very serious complication in pregnancy. it basically makes the woman unable to tolerate anything by mouth. no food, no liquid, everything comes up.

obviously that can result in weight loss, electrolyte abnormalities, in some cases organ failure, kidney and liver failure and other complications that are then related to the way we treat this woman. so do not think of this like, ah, a little queasy. this is a big deal. >> what causes it? >> we don't know. that's the thing. sometimes we see it with multiples like twins or just in the first pregnancy. women can have it in every single pregnancy. there are a lot of myths and misconceptions out there. a lot of people say, oh, when you're out of the first trimester it will go away. that's not true. >> amy was in her second. >> that's right and women can have this for their entire pregnancy so there's a lot of questions. we don't know a lot of the answers but we know this is really, really serious. >> do we know what the best treatments are? >> we try to do our best. the first line is we try to manage these women at home with oral medications to reduce nausea and vomiting.

if that fails and oftentimes it does that woman needs to be hospitalized and needs iv hydration, in some cases assisted feeding to give her the nourishment and nutrition she and a growing fetus need and that could either be with an oral feeding tube, a permanent feeding tube, something called a pic line. this is a big deal. >> we know what it does but also emotionally and psychologically it takes a toll. >> i'm so glad you asked. it takes a toll on the woman. it can cause trauma that stays with her for a long time and affects the whole circle. it's difficult for the partner, the baby's father or spouse or partner to see a woman going through this and feel helpless. it's a big deal. >> all right, well, thank you, jen. >> you bet. >> george. right now we get to an emotional journey for two mothers and the life-changing gift for one of their sons. amy met the young man for a special "20/20" and she's back with us now. what an inspiring story. >> it really is. after suffering terrible injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound a miracle face transplant surgery has given one young manner real chance at life.

>> it's remarkable. >> yeah. >> and seeing and knowing what you've been through, can you walk us through what you got from will and what you were able to keep? >> yeah. >> reporter: it's one of the most unusual questions i've ever posed, asking a young man for a guided tour of the features of his face. 26-year-old cameron underwood suffered devastating injuries to his face two years ago when a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> how do you prepare yourself for that as a mom to see that? >> i don't know. hoping that you're dreaming and you wake up, that it was all a nightmare. >> reporter: but cam may have a second chance thanks to a miracle surgery and another mother, sally fisher, who lost her son will and is about to make the most selfless gift to a family she doesn't even know. >> i mean, from my standpoint, of course, we would give organs but a face, you know, the idea, you know, a face is how people identify -- >> so personal.

just a moment ago. let me tell you, seeing all of these people who are posting these creative ears and doing different thing, what's really caught your eye, bob? >> well, tell you what catches my eye is that we believe the best disney experiences are those that are shared with family and friends. and for me, i love the shared experiences that we get when a whole group does the share your ears program together, in fact, we had one particular school group in connecticut, a second grade group that decided to actually make a class project around making their ears and then when they did that they obviously shared it but what was great about that, robin, it was children helping other children and that's just fantastic. >> yes, that's a great feeling. [ applause ] that's right, bob. hey, you know what, congratulations. i know that you recently joined the board of directors of make-a-wish america. i know that is great. can you just really tell people what the natural connection is

between make-a-wish and disney. >> well, there's a big overlap, i believe, msi t disney company make-a-wish. we're both in the business of making wishes come true. in fact, you'll find it interesting that half of the requests that come in to make-a-wish from wish families are for a disney vacation. and i think that's very inspiring and very humbling and, you know, these families can do essentially anything they want. they can choose whatever they want and the fact that they choose to spend it with us here at disney is just remarkable. >> means the world to us. you're right about that. hey, bob, do you mind if i share a little something with the audience now? do i have your permission? >> please do. please, do. go for it. >> the response from all of you has been absolutely phenomenal. nearly 400,000 people have shared their ears to help reachg more than $2 million to make-a-wish, so in celebration of mickey's birthday on november
