getting out of town, grabbing a last minute flight to portland. >> i have a friend up there. i was like i need to come visit. i'm older now so it's really affecting me. > >> she seems to have a whole lot of company. good evening. >> thanks for joining us. take a look at the air quality in four different locations in the bay area. >> air quality is awful and breaking records. >> let's take a look at a live picture. you can barely see the bay and the bay bridge. christine from the air district sent me an e-mail. she said san francisco had an air quality index of 271. highest aqi for san francisco in more than 20 years. here are the index values.

they are all in the unhealthy to very unhealthy. avoid the out doors or use an n-95 mask. the brighter the colors, the worst the air. for tomorrow it's a minor improvement. sunday we'll see a switch in the wind direction which would make it worse. spare the alert through tuesday. we will continue to see impacts from the camp area. >> thanks very much. in san francisco, get this, researchers at uc berkeley say breathing this air in san francisco today is like smoking 11 cigarettes. in oakland it's equivalent to ten cigarettes. that's half a pack. eight in san jose. compare to what it's like in

chico. nine in san jose. in butte county 16 cigarettes smoked. one pack is 20 cigarettes. people are lining up by the dozens at stores to get their hands on masks. the line at the east hardware store stretched out the door like they are waiting for concert tickets. many stores say new ship ments coming in but selling out in hours. some have capped it to three per customer. it's great idea to get one. >> masks are a common sight around the bay area. there's a right way and a wrong way to wear them. >> she got twe got the answers our >> reporter: we're all improv e improvising. perfecting our mask technique. >> does it help to duct tape the edges of your doors and windows? >> it does. you want to have as much sealing

as possible. >> reporter: she's an allergist with the bay area. she suggests wearing the n-95 masks even in your car. she says ill fitting one size fits all masks that are too large can be folded and even sealed with medical tape. >> wrap around glasses and sunglasses. remember glasses. you can use goggles. a lot of my patients are having eye irritation in addition to coughing. >> something like this, a snorkel mask over kill? >> why not. whatever works. if you have access to an industrial respirator may not a bad idea. >> if you just grab a scarf, would this happelp? >> it's better than nothing.

because she's coughing so much, i'm having to hold her a lot. >> reporter: this woman posted a picture of her dog with a small bandana covering its face which doesn't do much good. masks aren't really effective either. >> they probably wouldn't tolerate them being fitted any way. >> reporter: dr. sherry returned from chico where she and other vets were treating animals. she said it's not a bad idea to walk down your dogs after a walk because some dogs tend to lick themselves. >> with there's a lot of matter on the coat, you want to gently wipe it away and baby wipes would work just fine for that. >> reporter: last night she brought home a seep yonior dog a woman whose owner who lost her home could no longer care for her. >> i just happen to be coming back this way and gave her a lift back to san francisco. our partners at muttville will take over her care. >> reporter: muttville is a

the big game tomorrow. the big game between stanford and cal. it will be postponed now due to the extremely unhealthy air quality. >> this traditional football game between the bay area rivals will be ploomoved to saturday, december 1st. >> officials say they made the decision after consulting with campus medical. this is the fist time in more than 50 years the game has been postponed. >> in 1963 the game was scheduled after the assassination of president kennedy. poor air quality is forcing the oakland zoo to close for another day tomorrow. animals are being closely monitored by zoo coopekeepers. animals have access. the zoo has not decide on whether to open sunday. we have a list of additional closures on our website. you can check air quality levels where you live at abc7news.com.

we have a map that updates every five minutes. >> take a moment when you can. there were some scary plo t moments in the santa cruz mountains. >> a structure and vegetation fire grew to 15 acres and prompted evacuations off bear creek and may fair road. >> reporter: this is what residents have been fearing. a fire broke out. the fire spread up a canyon with homes in its path. a limited evacuation was ordered although many of the residents were at work and quickly returned home when they learned about their homes being at risk. residents have heated advice to cut defensible space around their home to help contain fire to about 8 to 10 acres.

it was estimated at 15 acres. residents were alarmed. >> it's pretty close. it's on our property. it started on one else's property but looks like it's burning on our property. they've got it under control now. >> a little concerned. didn't think something this close to home would be where we would see. it's unexpected. >> what do you think of the fire response response? >> they were pretty quick. the gentleman that owns the house up there was at home. they definitely got out here quick. >> reporter: calm winds favored firefighters in their battle to put out this brush fire. cal fire named this the bear fire. there was another bear fire in october of last year that burned 391 acres and two houses.

search for human remains continue block by block. the yellow tags are good news. >> the property has been searched. in certain colors you'll have where someone has been found or no one has been found which is a good thing. >> reporter: all part of a pain staking process still in its beginning phases. >> we don't want to have to rescue someone or someone who has gotten injured after we let them back in. that would not be a good thing. >> reporter: it is dangerous. we took a walk into this area and i nearly tripped over wires. couldn't see them. they were very burned, almost impossible to see. we asked about those 600 missing people. actually more. he says they are hopeful to find most most of them. they are hopeful to find 99% but that 1% looms large. >> absolutely. wayne, thank you. chico's former police chief are suing pg&e over this fire.

he and his wife claim the utility failed to safely and properly maintain its power lines resulting in the loss of their home in paradise. investigators have not determined the cause of the plaz yet. shares of pg&e stock soared today. the process of rebuilding is getting under way. >> it really is. we have more on how fema is helping fire victims get central assistance. >> reporter: fema as turned a portion of the mall into disaster recovery. the need so great that the wait times have been too long for some. >> it's been hours. there's some people in there that have been waiting here since they opened at 9:00 this

morning. >> reporter: stacy just found out that she is one of thousands who lost everything. she's grateful to have been able to escape her paradise home as she requires walker. >> my neighbor, thank god, came and woke me up. i was sleeping. >> reporter: with so many traumatizing experiences, crisis counselors and comfort dogs are working to keep victims in good spirits. the process of getting aids can be overwhelming but once approved victims will get funding for temporary housing. >> we give them cash, a check. deposit it into their account they can use to rent something while they are waiting to rebuild and get back to their home. >> reporter: one woman decided to come here in person after her initial online application was ruled ineligible. >> i just want to get the word out to the rest of my community. if this happens to you, there are some resources available to you. you just got to take some extra steps. i know it sucks, but we got to do it. >> reporter: it could take time

oakland. 52 in half-moon bay. the view really murky tonight. here is look at the temperatures. currently 48 in vacaville. live doppler 7 picking up some of the smoke now as i is pretty thick over our region. visibility low fluff to where it could slow you down if you're getting away tonight for the weekend or you're just driving commute time. just be careful out there. one mile in hayward, napa down to about a mile and three quarters in san jose right now. here is a look at the air quality across the bay area. notice the red and violet purple shades. it's unhealthy to very unhealthy locally. get you in first to the santa cruz area, south bay, east bay. it's all red. you'll note it's very unhealthy from san francisco to the east bay and we go to the north bay where they are dealing with unhealthy air quality. you want to get out of here and get some cleaner air, blue

skies, head to the sierra or parts of southern california where they are seeing good air quality right now. in case you're wonder why, why is this stagnant air causing all this smoke. we have this area of high pressure overhead. it's been there. area of high pressure with sinking air, down sloping wind out of northeast. it's trapping it down near the surface. we don't have strong winds coming off the ocean to blow some of that smoke away. first thing tomorrow morning we'll have temperatures in the low 30s the low 50s. it's spare the air for tomorrow. air quality in effect through tuesday. notice the fog will come back in as a southerly wind develops and pulls the fog up.

tomorrow afternoon temperatures in the low 60s to upper 60s. there will be fog near the ocean. part of the problem is there's so much smoke. a light level one system. we have light moderate rain coming. this is the bright side. breezy conditions coming off the ocean. cleaner air on the way. wednesday is the beginning of it. hour by hour wednesday afternoon, rain near. mixed precip in the sierra. it will bring us more rain here and mountain snow with the strongest of the series coming through on saturday and continuing into sunday. if you have plans for that thanksgiving weekend, keep that in mind p. most areas will get half an inch. possibly higher as we head toward the end of next week. fog and hazy sunshine tomorrow. still hazy for sunday.
