live where you live, this is abc news. >> very unhealthy smoke from the camp fire intensified across the bay area tonight. you're looking live at san francisco, where the city set a record for its worst air quality ever. >> all the smoke led to a run on masks, shut down schools, and forced the cancellation of events all over the bay area. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. take a look at the iconic golden gate bridge today. from left to right, this is how smoky it was until 8:00 this morning until 10:00 tonight. >> as the sun went down, smoky skies gave us some stung sun sets. let's check with sandhya patel. beautiful but dangerous. >> it's bad outside right now. but i have encouraging news. it's going get better. let's take a look at the air quality index. it's particulate matter that is fine pollution, is in the unhealthy to very unhealthy levels right now. as you take a look at the

forecast, it was starting tonight. heavy smoke over the area at this hour, but that smoke is going to get pushed northward by a shift in the wind. a sea breeze is coming tomorrow afternoon/evening. you will notice an improvement. it will continue on sunday. we're going to go from what we had this past week, which was unhealthy to hazardous to orange, which is poor for sensitive groups. a spare the air alert is up right on through tuesday and an air quality advisory. as you'll notice, we'll keep on with the trend for monday and tuesday. and i do have encouraging news. much better air quality coming your way as our rain chances increase wednesday through friday and possibly beyond next week. i'll be back with more on that in just a few minutes. ama and dan? >> we look forward to that. thank you, sandhya. we have live team coverage of the unhealthy air conditions tonight. we'll begin in the smoky south bay, more than 200 miles from

where the camp fire is burning. >> amanda del castillo is live in the south bay. >> incredible to think we have spent an entire week breathing in this dangerous smoke. doctors tell me hospital visits are increasing, and we're getting a better idea of just how harmful this air really is. this thick layer of smoke from the camp fire still hangs over the south bay. >> i've been here 26 years. this is the worst air quality i have seen in my career. >> dr. clifford wang says 20% of patients who came in for treatment friday reported shortness of breath in symptoms likely related to smoke. he says some patients have requested additional nebulizers, inhalers and steroid doses. others require more specialized care there. >> are some patients we had to keep in the hospital because we're worried if they left the hospital. that would actually have problems again. >> across the city, christmas in the park prep in downtown san jose smoked for smoke concerns. stanley yi says his group of 22

volunteers dropped to 11. >> we probably lost a couple of our volunteers due to the smoke. >> across the street, opening night at chriskristi yamaguchi downtown ice. hundreds usually attend but business started out slow with smoke overhead. >> we of course want everyone to be safe and healthy, and we are recommending that people do what feels best to them. >> however, options to escape the smoke aren't always available or easily accessible. to combat concern for the homeless, the county has opened more than a dozen clean air centers. >> from gilroy up to milpitas and palo alto and mountain view, there are facilities available to help. >> more than anything, we want to avoid or limit what we do outside. in fact, san jose parks and rec has already canceled outdoor camps, classes and other activities through tuesday. i'm live in san jose tonight, amanda del castillo. >> thank you.

f. kennedy. in berkeley, katie utehs, abc 7 news. >> all right, katie, thank you. let's take a live look at san francisco international airport. at least 350 flights were delayed today because of the low visibility caused by all the smoke. the timing couldn't have been worse. today was expected to be one of the highest travel days of the thanksgiving holiday break. this might be the lone bright spot tonight in the embarcadero center in san francisco. the holiday lights were turned on. the ceremony itself was canceled buzz of the bad air. they didn't want people staying outside during that time. and the smoke has shut down the ice rink indefinitely. however, the carnival went on as planned. it was indoors. among the highlights of the evening was the opportunity to meet mickey mouse from disney on ice. >> that's fun. many other outdoor events this weekend have also been canceled because of the poor air quality. cirque du soleil's volta performances called off at the last minute. some ticket hoerlsd were caught by surprise. >> a friend of my checked the

spelling variations or maybe they haven't checked in with family. they've also added every single name described as missing in 911 calls since the fire started. the sheriff's office asks people to call one of these numbers if someone has been found so that detectives can remove their names from the list. you can also find these numbers on our website, abc7news.com. the number dead from the camp fire has gone up to 71 people. president trump is going to visit the fire zone tomorrow. governor brown and governor-elect gavin newsom will join him. there is a red flag warning that starts tomorrow night and goes into sunday. >> and even though containment is up, roughly 50% now, the fire is growing, scorching 146,000 acres. as i said, cal fire said containment is at 50% at this point. abc 7 reporter carlos salcedo is in chico tonight where they're awaiting the president tomorrow. carlos? >> we are at the incident command post in chico where preparations are under way for tomorrow's presidential visit. and the butte county sheriff hopes to get the following message across to the president.

>> i would really appreciate it if he has some time to acknowledge the great work of the public safety professionals out here. >> the sheriff not directly mentioning president trump's initial tweet on the camp fire where he criticized forest management while threatening to withhold funding. the main focus for local officials has been on search-and-rescue efforts and helping fire victims get become on their feet. hundreds of survivors packed this space at the chico mall where fema has set up a disaster recovery center. stacey akins found out she is one of thousands who lost everything. she is grateful to have been able to escape her paradise home as she requires a walker. >> my legs gave out. so i was in my yard yelling for somebody to please, god help me. and i heard a voice from out of the dark. my neighbor said what do you need i said help. >> with so many traumatizing experiences, crisis counselors

tonight how a small number of cars with artificial intelligence could soon improve traffic for all the other cars on the road, including yours. it happens to all of us. you're driving along the freeway when for no obvious reasons some cars start slowing down while others are still cruising right along. it's what experts call a phantom traffic jam. >> you are stopped because of the way people drive. small disturbances from driver get magnified by the driver behind. pretty soon it speed up, slow down, speed up, slow down. >> dan work, a traffic expert from vanderbilt university knows all about the phantom traffic jam. his scene even ran this test, demonstrating it's a real phenomenon. you can see it sped up in this video. 22 cars driving in a circle. >> their drivers are just told to drive normally. inevitably, eventually the cars go into a stop-and-go traffic pattern, where drivers are racing around one side of the track just to get caught in the traffic jam on the other side of the track. >> now here is video with data

from an experiment that shows what we can do about it. these are the same cars with one exception. the arrow points to a self-driving car programmed to smooth the flow of traffic. the human drivers don't know it's there. but as a self-driving car drives more smoothly, all the other cars do too. >> what interest self driving car has to do is drive at the average speed of the person that is driving too fast and too slow. >> a human driver can't figure that out, but a car with artificial intelligence can. here in the bay area traffic of the berkeley lab are using sophisticated computer modeling to predict what else self-driving cars can do. in this simulation, cars programmed to behave like human drivers have to get through an intersection. they take turns just like people would do. then a single car with artificial intelligence is introduced. >> if you let artificial intelligence find a more intelligent solution, what it will do is it will learn to

create a snake. even though you never taught it what is a snake. >> windchiller alex byam said they figured out to make traffic one more efficiently. and this approach to the bay bridge toll plaza. the red are self-driving cars regulating other cars to smooth the flow of traffic. >> in the coming years, we'll see an increasing proportion of vehicles on the road have some level of automation. not fully automated but some level. that means within a few years, we'll have maybe 5% or 10% of vehicles that could help control traffic. >> and remember that experiment with the circling cars? researchers say when the cars were driving more smoothly, they used an incredible 40% less gas. that's not just the self-driving cars. it's all of them. >> it really shows the potential that these automation systems, even before every car has them can benefit all of our commutes. >> isn't that interesting? >> it really is.

>> an early version of this technology is already being offered by some carmakers. it's an advanced version of cruise control that allows you to set the space between your car and the one a head of you. >> that can keep you driving more smoothly and benefit everyone around you. >> it really is promising down the road, literally. let's turn our attention to the weekend forecast and the air quality. >> meteorologist sandhya patel has more on that. sandhya? >> it's looking promising for much better air quality next week as storms move. in ama and dan, i want to show you live doppler 7 right now. and tonight we do still have some smoke over the by area, as you take a look at our air quality right now. everyone across the bay area in the red to purple, which is unhealthy to very unhealthy across the region. let's go area by area. starting in santa cruz and san jose, where it is unhealthy in the red there. on the peninsula and san francisco, heading into the east bay, you will start to notice some purples there. san rafael, that is very

unhealthy air. if you can, avoid the smoke. stay inside. don't forget about your pets. and if you do have to go outside, at least use an n-95 mask. it will offer some protection. north reds from santa rosa to napa. you want good air quality? you're going to have to head to parts of the sierra, san luis obispo. they have some green there's. indication of good air quality in those regions. visibility here locally is low because of the smoke, down to 2 1/2 miles in petaluma. just over a mile in hayward. 2 1/2 miles in san jose. definitely be careful, this is going to be the case as we head towards tomorrow. sfo has been reporting over two-hour arrival delays, and that is going to continue as we head towards tomorrow in case you're flying out. so why? why is the smoky air still staying with us? there is an area of high pressure that has kept our air stagnant. so with the area of high pressure, clockwise flow bringing that smoke in a northeasterly fashion, and below that area of high pressure we have sinking air that is

trapping the smoke near the surface, you really need a strong sea breeze. we'll see subtle changes this weekend and that sea breeze will start to improve our air quality starting tomorrow. from the 30s to the 50s, we are feeling the chill. sfo camera live look right now. smoke is there. san rafael camera, it is also a very smoky view. smoky, hazy air through tuesday. slight improvement expected tomorrow with rain and cleaner air for the middle of next week. hazy skies first thing in the morning. when you get going to start off your weekend plans, make sure you grab a jacket or sweater. low 30s to the upper 40s tomorrow afternoon. the haze will be with us through tuesday, along with an air quality advisory. temperatures primarily in the 60s, and then we bring in our storm impact scale future next week. it's a light level 1 system, a series of them. wednesday through friday, light to moderate rain are. most areas half an inch to an inch, breezy with cleaner air coming. wednesday, as we look at our hour-by-hour forecast, 8:00 a.m. in the morning, we're going start to see that rain.
