elizabeth hur joins us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we'll begin with president trump saying on his end, he is ready for this russia investigation to wrap up, and should his new acting attorney general choose to limit this investigation in any way, the president says he is okay with that. special counsel robert mueller has yet to reveal a timeline, but president trump says he has completed his written answers for mueller, telling fox news he wrote them himself. >> not my team. i'm preparing written answers. >> reporter: the president adding a sitdown interview with mueller, not likely. >> i think we have wasted enough time on this witch hunt, and the answer is probably that we're finished. >> reporter: as for his acting attorney general, matthew whitaker, who has been a vocal critic of the russia probe, this is what he says about limbing the investigation. >> if he decides to curtail -- >> i would not get involved. >> reporter: this as democrat

adam schiff, likely the next chairman of the house intelligence committee calls his appointment unconstitutional. >> it has to be subject to confirmation and ethically, he should have absolutely nothing to do with the investigation. >> reporter: in response, president trump blasted schiff on twitter calling his name an expletive. the president also lashing out at retired admiral william mcraven, who commanded the raid that killed osama bin laden and called the president's attacks on the media the greatest threat to democracy. >> he is a navy s.e.a.l. >> wouldn't it have been great if we got osama bin laden a lot sooner than that? >> reporter: in a statement, mcraven says he is standing by his comments, adding he admires all presidents who, quote, uphold the dignity of the office. janai? >> elizabeth hur, thank you. we're following breaking news from central america. authorities are evacuating some eight communities in guatemala after warning about the potential for a powerful eruption. the so-called volcano of fire

already erupted this year back in june killing at least 194 people and leaving hundreds of others missing. well, officials say the current eruption is not showing any sign of weakening. so evacuations are now under way and we'll keep you posted on this throughout the morning. we turn now to the wildfire disaster in california. overnight, we learned nearly 1,000 people are still unaccounted for after the so-called camp fire destroyed the town of paradise. 77 people are confirmed dead, and now there is new concern about rain coming tomorrow night. >> reporter: more than a week after the deadly camp fire ravaged parts of northern california, the desperate search continues for those still missing. >> i would ask that people make every diligent effort to reach out to their friends and family to let them know they're okay and then also check with us and let us know that they're okay so we can devote our resources to locating people who haven't yet been accounted for. >> reporter: the president visiting the devastated area saturday. >> we do have to do management, maintenance and we'll be working also with environmental groups.

in macau, china. now the driver of germany suffered a spinal fracture. she was conscious when she was taken from the track. she later tweeted, thanking fans for their support. we now know the name of the american woman who fell to her death on a cruise ship off the coast of aruba. the victim's brother has identified her as 52-year-old omarosa tanorio calling her a loving mother who was devoted to teaching. local media reported her fall onto a lifeboat followed a struggle with a man on board. the fbi is investigating the case as a possible murder. other passengers say they are stunned. >> it was a rude awakening at 4:00 they made the announcement into our rooms. >> we only found out afterwards when we arrived in aruba an accident had taken place.t until the local authorities gave us permission. >> she was on the princess cruise with her husband who is not considered a suspect. a gofundme page says she lived with her son, a college student in alabama. apple ceo, tim cook, says

>> they were stuck for several hours, including a pregnant woman inside. we turn now to a new twist in that alleged gofundme scam. the new jersey woman accused in the hoax is turning against her ex-boyfriend and the man involved. >> she claims she is an innocent victim and the two men are the real culprits in the case. >> reporter: this morning, one of the alleged gofundme scammers, claiming she is the one who was duped. >> she is a wonderful person. the other side of that is that she is a bit naive. >> reporter: the attorney for kate mcclure says she didn't know her ex-boyfriend, mark d'amico and homeless veteran john bobbitt, already knew each other. >> all along she had no idea that there had been an agreement, a conspiracy really between d'amico and bobbitt to get money through gofundme. >> reporter: d'amico and mcclure started the gofundme for bobbitt after they claimed bobbitt gave mcclure his last $20 for gas

when she got stranded outside philadelphia. that fund-raising campaign raised more than $400,000. >> it's like winning the lottery. >> reporter: but that's week, prosecutors announced all three were under arrest, accusing them of making the story up to inspire donors. >> the entire campaign was predicated on a lie. >> reporter: now mcclure claims it was d'amico who concocted the whole story. >> in reality, kate thought she was helping a homeless veteran. >> reporter: mcclure's attorney blames it all on bobbitt and d'amico suffering from addictions. >> it's my view that mr. d'amico has a gambling addiction and mr. bobbitt has a heroin addiction. >> mcclure's attorney says he has recordings that backs up his client's claim. he'll be on "good morning america" this morning. lawyers for the two men are not commenting. meanwhile, gofundme says it will refund all donations. the survivors of a deadly rafting trip are speaking out for the first time. the group of friends traveled to costa rica for a bachelor party. their rafting trip followed heavy rain.

a flood alert was posted, but the group says they didn't know of it. four of them and their guide were killed. the groom, luis beltran lost his brother who was trying to hold onto the raft. >> mark was held under for a good 20, 30 seconds. when i finally came up for air, i remember seeing my brother off to the distance, and he was hanging onto a raft and they were able to get him up, but as soon as they got him up, he was out of breath and that raft ended up slipping right away. so i don't think, you know, he never really got a chance to recover, like, catch his breath. >> the group blames the rafting company claiming greed prevented them from taking safety precautions. he'll hear from more from the survivors later on "good morning america." a disaster in the sky as a hot air balloon loaded with fireworks exploded during a festival in myanmar. the balloon came crashing down toward the crowd as the

fireworks erupted sending people there scrambling for safety. that's a crazy scene. at least nine people were injured. in medical news, a possible breakthrough for young people suffering from peanut allergies. researchers found giving patients a small amount of an experimental drug derived from peanuts and then increasing the dosage over six months led to fewer allergic reactions. two-thirds of the children on the plan were able to eat more peanuts, but that treatment was less effective for adults. we could find out today if medical examiners in california if a man's body found over the weekend is that of a missing san francisco 49ers fan. ian powers went missing after attending last monday's 49ers game with his girlfriend. police tracked his phone to a parking lot and his car was found abandoned. a fisherman found the body in the water about two miles away. on sunday night football, the bears' defense was just too much for the vikings. that was a regular thing there. a lot of interceptions. this in the fourth quarter. the bears winning it all, and they got their dance moves

this is one of many campuses shutting down this week because of the poor air quality, because of all the smoke. here is a look at the smoky conditions in the bay area over the weekend. people wore masks to try to protect themselves. many found there weren't that many outdooractivities. people had big plans to sight see but quickly learned they were going to have to change their plans. >> we went to go eat. we were planning on going ice skating but it is closed due to the smoke. >> we were going to go to alcatraz. unfortunately that couldn't happen because it was closed. so disappointment. >> reporter: here's a look at the bike rental is store. not riding bikes because of the smoke conditions. wednesday much needed rain will be moving into the area. until then, quality time indoors with the family.
