>> what happened, michael? >> reporter: 24-year-old actress mareli miniutti filing for a restraining order. miniutti says avenatti physically and verbally assaulted her and that these photos of bruises on parts of her body are proof. she had a brief role in the film "ocean's 8" and says she has been dating the high-profile attorney for more than a year and living with him since january. miniutti claims the violent encounter started over an argument over money. avenatti allegedly calling her an ungrateful expletive. she states that avenatti grabbed my right arm and dragged me out of bed and into the public hallway. miniutti says she was only wearing underwear and a t-shirt. miniutti says she fled and later that night when she noticed the bruises on her body, she called police who arrested avenatti the next day. the attorney posting $50,000 bail then holding a news conference steps from the jail. >> i have never struck a woman.

i never will strike a woman. >> reporter: in a statement to the court, miniutti says that this was not the first time avenatti was violent. back in february, she says avenatti pushed her out of the apartment where i hit my head against a door. miniutti says avenatti then threw shoes at her. >> he tells me he will be exonerated as soon as some of the evidence comes out, including videotapes from the apartment building, instagram posts and actual physical evidence. but then i asked him why if these allegations are not true she would make up these lies, he had no comment. >> reporter: tom llamas, abc news, new york. a potential suicide drama involving actor james woods played out on twitter. >> woods reached out to a user claiming to be a veteran who posted a message saying he planned to take his life. woods was among the many people reaching out keeping the conversation going. as he tried to reach out to police, he also told him of his own battles with depression.

ved airen a dozen the cdc now advising consumers not to eat any form of romaine lettuce and urging restaurants to stop selling and serving the product until more is learned about the outbreak. >> there is not a train of trace back to tell, okay, it came from this particular field or grower or whatever. that's why it's so difficult to really identify where it came from. >> reporter: consumer reports warning that for now everyone throw away those heads and hearts of romaine lettuce mixes and classic caesar salads. >> washing does not remove this bacteria because what it can do is get inside the cells and inside the layers, and so washing doesn't do anything at all. >> reporter: this is a different strain of e. coli than the one responsible for another romaine lettuce scare earlier this year. that outbreak caused more than 200 people in 30 states to fall sick and five people ended up dying.

those numbers are going to be taking a tumble for thanksgiving day. kendis? janai? >> all right. our thanks to melissa. turning now to an explosive new report that president trump wanted to order the justice department to prosecute hillary clinton and former fbi director james comey. according to the "new york times," he mentioned it last spring to then white house counsel don mcgahn. but sources say mcgahn told trump that as president he did not have the authority to issue such an order. mcgahn reportedly had white house lawyers write a memo warning the president that such an action could be seen as abuse of power and lead to impeachment. well, after months of negotiations, the president has submitted his written answers to the special counsel robert mueller. sources tell abc news that the answers pertain to collusion but not obstruction of justice. they say the president spent several days with his lawyers crafting those answers. president trump is facing opposition from both parties

over his refusal to directly penalize saudi arabia for the murder of "washington post" columnist jamal khashoggi. the top republican and democrat on the senate foreign relations committee are demanding that the president make a determination about the crown prince's role in the killing. they sent a letter triggering an investigation after the president said it would be foolish to cancel lucrative contracts with the saudis. >> why are you siding with the saudis over your own intelligence community? >> because it's america first for me. saudi arabia, if we broke with them, i think your oil prices would go through the roof. >> the cia has reportedly concluded that the crown prince himself ordered khashoggi's assassination. the president said maybe the prince did know or maybe he didn't know about the murder. we're now hearing from the children of the woman whose death on board a caribbean cruise ship remains a mystery. they say she was terrified about taking the trip, a journey that was supposed to give her and her husband time to work on their marriage. here is abc's victor oquendo.

the fbi to conclude its case. victor oquendo, abc news, miami. a mistrial has been declared in the trial of a suspect accused of murdering a female jogger here in new york. 22-year-old chanel lewis being charged for the death of karina vetrano. lewis had given videotaped confessions and was linked to the murder scene by dna evidence but the jury was split on whether to convict him after less than two days of deliberations. prosecutors say they will retry lewis. and the death of san francisco 49ers fan ian powers has been ruled an accident. powers disappeared after becoming separated from his girlfriend at the "monday night football" game last week. his body was found in the waters near the 49ers' stadium. a coroner has ruled he died from drowning. police say their investigation is closed. the company that makes roundup weed killer is appealing a $78 million verdict against it. a jury earlier this year found

that monsanto's roundup caused a california man's cancer. the original award was $289 million. a judge cut that significantly just last month. the company says none of the science presented at the trial earlier this year supported the jury's conclusion. monsanto is facing more than 9,000 similar lawsuits. so the birth of a baby ape has officials at the san diego zoo scratching their heads. >> eloise had her seventh child earlier this month. the zoo was more than a little shocked because it says eloise has been on birth control for years. she and her partner had their last child 12 years ago. >> wow. >> wow. >> oof. >> they also say the new mom didn't show any signs of being pregnant. she and the baby are doing fine. >> my goodness. >> how did that happen? >> that's a trend these days, though? >> what.

arabia despite u.s. intelligence findings linking its crown prince to the murder of that american resident jamal khashoggi. >> and now the president is accused of ignoring human rights for economic gain. here is abc's cecilia vega. >> reporter: from president trump, a forceful defense. >> if we abandon saudi arabia, it would be a terrible mistake. >> reporter: that in spite of "the washington post" report that the cia has concluded crown prince mohammed bin salman himself ordered the assassination of journalist jamal khashoggi. khashoggi last seen alive walking into the saudi consulate in istanbul. officials say he was assassinated by a saudi hit squad. these airport security images published in a turkish newspaper show the luggage of the alleged killers. right there, electric shock devices, syringes, scissors and radios. there was even an audio recording of khashoggi's execution. apparently none of it enough to convince the president to break ranks with his middle eastern

ally. >> i'm not going to destroy the world economy and i'm not going to destroy the economy for our country by being foolish with saudi arabia. >> reporter: an exclamation-point filled statement, the president emphatically declared "the world is a very dangerous place." and while he criticized the murder, saying the crime against jamal khashoggi was a terrible one and one that our country does not condone, he also essentially declared the matter case closed, writing, "it could very well be that the crown prince had knowledge of this tragic event. maybe he did and maybe he didn't." on fox news, the president said the crown prince assured him he was not involved. >> he told me that i would say maybe five times at different points. ju mh in >> why are you siding with the saudis over your own intelligence community? >> because it's america first to me. saudi arabia, if we broke with them, i think your oil prices would go through the roof.

>> there was now news in special counsel robert mueller's russia probe. president trump has now turned in his answers to mueller's questions. this came after months of negotiations over the scope of the questions, the number, the subject that would be allowed. sources tell us that the president actually spent several days huddled up with his lawyers coming up with these answers, answers that pertained to collusion but not obstruction. cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. >> and one more note about the khashoggi murder. with the white house declining to punish saudi arabia, the senate will now investigate the matter. meanwhile in the house, nancy pelosi has a new supporter in her effort to become speaker for the second time. ohio congresswoman marsha fudge was considered a top potential rival to pelosi but fudge now says she'll back pelosi. president obama also came out in favor of pelosi, calling her an extraordinary partner during his presidency. asian markets traded lower. the dow slid more more than 550

points, erasing all of its gains for the year. the big tech stocks like facebook and netflix have suffered the greatest losses recently. there are also concerns about a global economic slowdown and rising interest rates. all good news for the markets. >> and good news because thanksgiving is tomorrow. >> yes. maybe not so good news for millions of americans who will travel today. 3 million alone will be flying, but for some it's going to be slow-going. >> more than 3,600 flights were delayed in the u.s. yesterday alone. hardest hit, seattle-tacoma airport with 400 flights delayed because of fog. >> the roads were also jammed. this is a look at l.a., headlights, brake lights. likely make driving more difficult today in parts of the country. >> accuweather's melissa constanzer is here with the forecast. >> kendis, janai, mother nature could be slowing down the travel in certain spots as you head out for the day. be cautious into northern new england.

paradise, california, a town of 27,000 people wiped off the face of the map with the camp fire, a fire that has become the state's deadliest and most destructive fire in california history. >> this fire came through and took the heart of the town out. it took, you know, a significant portion of the infrastructure. >> reporter: the national guard offering the very first aerial view of the widespread devastation in paradise, a town that is wiped off the face of the map and faces a very long road to recovery. marcus moore, abc news, chico, california. >> our thanks to marcus. this is a weird silver lining. all the smoke and the haze from the california wildfires is creating beautiful sunsets thousands of miles away. even in washington, d.c. >> wow. >> the light bouncing off the ash particles in the air, enhancing the red and orange colors at sunrise and there at sunset over the potomac. >> interesting.

wildfire in so we're getting our first look at an amazing rescue during a wildfire in southern california. three hikers and two dogs right there trapped during the woolsey fire near malibu earlier this month. now, two l.a. fire department pilots diverted their helicopter from water drop duties to save the group, and you can see them there getting into the chopper as one firefighter said they got them just in the nick of time. >> that was close. >> yeah, it was. >> that's enough excitement for me today. >> hey, you and me both, brother. >> there for all of them. meanwhile in the bronx, a four-alarm fire tore through one home then spread to homes on either side. more than 140 firefighters worked to contain the blaze. five of them and another person were injured, as many as a dozen families will be homeless for thanksgiving. and in neighboring new jersey, authorities are looking into a possible arson at a mansion in the town of colts neck. that's an area popular with many celebrities. four people were found dead at that scene. >> and investigators are working

on possible links between that fire and one that damaged another home a few miles away. jim dolan of our new york station has more. >> reporter: by nighttime the fire was out and the investigation into the deaths of two children and two adults was under way. for most of the day, though, smoke filled the sky over colts neck. a searing, raging fire that concealed for a time the real horror inside. >> something like this really, you know, knocks you off your feet. >> reporter: set on an estate measured in acres in an enormous million-dollar home, what first responders found when they got here was harrowing. >> we have confirmed there were four fatalities confirmed to be at the home. it's two adults and two children. >> reporter: as friends and family arrived at the estate, the horrifying story began to unfold. the fire investigated as a possible arson. one body, an adult male, found outside the home. a woman and two children found

inside. it's not clear if those three were already dead before the fire started. police would not release the identities of the victims but records show the home is owned by keith and jennifer caneiro. he is the co-founder with his brother of a tech consulting firm. the brother, records show, owned this home in ocean township and firefighters were called there for a fire that is also being investigated as an arson. is there a connection? >> we're investigating that as a possibility but it would be irresponsible for me to speculate at this point in time. that one started around 8:30 this morning. this call came in 12:38 in the afternoon. >> prosecutors would not confirm the adult man found outside the home here in colts neck died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, saying only they would release more information tomorrow. in colts neck, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> our thanks there to jim dolan. well, you can't outrun a buffalo. that is the sage advice from a utah man who was stalked by a bison herd and lived to tell the tale.

joined by nearly 3 million people flying today alone. luckily airlines anticipating the rush, adding more available seats on flights, increasing tsa staffing. authorities even opening up restricted airspace to commercial flights to handle the surge. but for some in california, the crowds are the least of their worries. smoke from those massive wildfires making visibility so low it's grounding flights in san francisco. >> while it will be the coldest thanksgiving anyone can remember in the midwest and the northeast, maybe we should have some warm thoughts. as we take a live look there at downtown miami where it will be 80 degrees. >> life is good in miami. >> it is. looking very nice. it will be -- also looking good in honolulu tomorrow. 84 degrees there as well. >> lucky them. >> all right. well, the trump family, they've got the right idea. they were already in florida right now. >> the president arrived in palm beach for thanksgiving with the first lady and son barron. earlier as he left washington he slammed a court ruling against

his asylum policy. he also defended his decision to give the saudi crown prince a pass over the murder of a "washington post" columnist. abc's stephanie ramos has the details. >> reporter: before taking off to florida for the thanksgiving holiday, president trump took questions from reporters for 20 minutes on the south lawn. >> we put out a statement on saudi arabia, which i guess most of you have seen, and we'll see how that all works out. >> reporter: that statement on saudi arabia seemingly dismissing that the crown prince is responsible for the murder of "washington post" columnist jamal khashoggi. the statement out before the official cia report. trump asked if he is siding with the saudis over u.s. intelligence, which reportedly found an apparent connection. >> because it's america first to him. it's all about america first. we're not going to give up hundreds of billions of dollars in orders and let russia, china and everybody else have them. >> reporter: the president pointing to the economic ties between the u.s. and saudi arabia.

the president moving on to the ninth circuit court judge that blocked his executive order. the order says anyone who crosses the southern border illegally would not be eligible for asylum. >> every case that gets filed in the ninth circuit we get beaten and then we end up having to go to the supreme court, like the travel ban and we won. this was an obama judge. >> reporter: the administration revised that ban multiple times before getting court approval. right now more than 5,000 active duty troops have been deployed to the u.s.-mexico border to assist patrol agents and they'll be there this week through the holiday. >> you're so worried about the thanksgiving holiday for them. they are so proud to be representing our country on the border. >> reporter: president trump has not visited a war zone yet but he says a plan is in the works. >> democrats who will gain control of the house of representatives next year say they'll examine the trump administration's immigration, detention and family separation policies in the new congress. kendis? janai? >> our thanks to stephanie ramos there in washington. turning now to the russia

investigation where president trump has submitted his written answers to special counsel robert mueller. sources tell abc news that the answers pertain to collusion but not obstruction. they say the president spent several days with his lawyers crafting the answers. over the weekend, he said a sit-down interview with mueller was unlikely. well, facebook boss mark zuckerberg defending his company after a series of high-profile setbacks. zuckerberg tells cnn he has no plans to step down as chairman. now, that's despite pressure over how facebook reacted to russian interference in the 2016 election and other recent scandals. there have been many. zuckerberg did concede that when it comes to russian meddling, facebook missed something really important. >> you know, i wish that we understood the issues sooner. i wish we understood it before 2016, before the russians tried to do these information operations. you know, it's a really big deal to come out and say that a nation state is behind something. before our company puts a stamp on something saying that, i want to be really sure that's the case. >> okay.

zuckerberg also gave a vote of confidence to his top deputy sheryl sandberg, calling her an important part of facebook. the company's stock is down nearly 40% from its recent peak. police say the doctor who died in chicago called 911 just before the attack. investigators say tamara o'neal recently ended an engagement with the suspect. police say she called when she saw him because she feared for her life. dr. o'neal, pharmacy resident dayna less and officer samuel jimenez were also killed. the suspect died after police shot him in the stomach. an air force pilot calling himself top gun did this to his $140 million f-22 stealth fighter. investigators found he brought the nose up too early and didn't reach a high enough speed. the jet skidded more than a mile on its belly. he wasn't injured but the mishap

involved the retraining of all f-22 pilots. >> but it was stealth so nobody actually saw the accident happen. >> exactly. the president has issued a pair of pardons which are not causing much controversies. >> the turkeys peas and carrots have avoided the carving table this thanksgiving. there was actually an online contest to determine which bird should be spared. the president said it was a close vote. >> this was a fair election. unfortunately, carrots refused to concede and demanded a recount and we're still fighting with carrots. even though peas and carrots have received a presidential pardon, i have warned them that house democrats are likely to issue them both subpoenas. >> so the pair will be sent to virginia tech to live comfortably until tomorrow night's dinner. no, they'll live out forever. >> before the ceremony, one of the turkeys faced the white house press corps. the birds, we don't know which a

>> reporter: new and detailed accusations emerging in the domestic violence case against michael avenatti. >> what happened, michael? >> reporter: 24-year-old actress mareli miniutti filing for a restraining order. miniutti says avenatti physically and verbally assaulted her and that these photos of bruises on parts of her body are proof. she had a brief role in the film "ocean's 8" and says she has been dating the high-profile attorney for more than a year and living with him since january. miniutti claims the violent encounter started over an argument over money. avenatti allegedly calling her an ungrateful expletive. she states that avenatti grabbed my right arm and dragged me out of bed and into the public hallway. miniutti says she was only wearing underwear and a t-shirt. miniutti says she fled and later that night when she noticed the bruises on her body, she called police who arrested avenatti the next day. the attorney posting $50,000
