thanksgiving weekend meaning more officers are on patrol looking for speeders, texters and drunk drivers. >> that's terrible. terrible for me as an officer to have to go to a scene and have a family show up looking for their loved ones that were potentially hurt or killed in a dui accident. >> reporter: holiday traffic can be particularly bad the day before thanksgiving. past data from google maps revealed the worst time to travel today is at 4:00 p.m. aaa says the largest traffic delays in the bay area could be nearly four times normal drive times. the worst commute is going to be this afternoon on 670 north between milipitas and the dublin and pleasanton area. the best advice, hit the road

worse, not better. at this point they say about 40 flights have been cancelled. with the first rain of the season arriving outside and large crowds expected inside. travelers brace for a rough airport experience. some told us they got here to sfo three hours before their flight. >> we have an 8:00 flight so we got here very early, but we were anxious to get here. >> reporter: the crowds inside looked intimidating and the security line in terminal two even had a spillover section. >> i never travel on this day. i actually usually travel on thanksgiving day, and it's a breeze. i'm very trepidatious about traveling today. looks can be deceiving. we timed one passenger at the height of the crush who started in the back of the add-on section of the line. she texted us when she got through, 21 minutes later. she thought it would take longer. >> it seems pretty bad. it seems like it's moving pretty quickly. >> reporter: so the crowds

didn't really create problems but the weather did. >> i'm going to costa rica. the connecting flight in between i would have missed because there's a delay here, so not going to costa rica today, going tomorrow. >> reporter: kurt ferguson knew today would be busy, but he didn't think the weather would derail his trip. >> i'm from the midwest, when it rains it really rapes. this is nothing. it shouldn't be too delayed, but i guess it's a little different here. >> reporter: it's the rain, but it's also the wind. a spokesman tells me it's blowing in the opposite direction that it usually does so they had to reconfigure the direction that the flights are going out and coming in on, and that's just less efficient. reporting live at sfo, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. the rain hitting northern california could bring flash flooding and mud slides to the areas charred by the camp fire, and here's the latest on the fire fight. it's now burned 153,000 acres. the fire is 80% contained. 81 people have been confirmed

killed. developing news, california lawmakers are drafting a bill to protect pg&e go going bankrupt. the bill will protect utilities from liabilities specifically connected to wildfires in 2018. now pg&e admits it will face serious financial consequences if it's found responsible for the camp fire in butte county. governor brown recently signed into law a bill which allows utilities to pass costs from fires on to customers. wildfire cost were covered in 2017 and future costs in 2018 and beyond but it does not cover wildfire cost this year. as the bay area air quality improves, several attractions are opening and you'll have to visit them in the rain. alcatraz and muir woods are reopening. some attractions will be closed tomorrow for thanksgiving. from the smoke to the rain to the threat of mud slides, you can stay on top of it with the abc 7 news app. you can get the forecast on your phone. just tap the weather button.

the ad gives you live doppler 7 and live web cams across the bay area all on your mobile device. new at 11:00, there's been a major development in a 1973 cold case murder of a stanford graduate. an arrest has been made. santa clara county sheriff's deputies took this man 74-year-old john arthur gentru for the killing of lesley marie perlov. the suspect is a resident of heywood. the 21-year-old woman was last seen alive on february 13th, 1973. she was an aspiring law student who deputies say was strangled. don't eat romaine lettuce, throw it away and definitely don'ter is of it for thanksgiving. the cdc is issuing that blanket warning as it searches for a source for that e. coli outbreak and at this point federal officials have not ordered any recalls of romaine products.

scattered showers developing as we head through the overnight. by 8:00 it's over and once the sun sets the north bay starts getting rain. some that have will be scattered through our neighborhoods as we head through thursday night into friday, but they, oh, rain, all the time until about sock, and look at the rain totals, pretty light. the rest of this storm, a tenth to a third of an inch and look what the next storm does, wow, we've got it more than an inch coming our way, possibly two inches up in the north bay and don't forget if you haven't left for tahoe yet, travel is not recommended because the winter storm warning and all the heavy wet snow is starting in about 30 minutes to accumulate. if you go that way, you know you've got to take extraed into and make sure that the gas tank is full before you head up the incline and take the chains. you'll probably need them. >> are yonervous aboutr angivin i kn you
