11:36 pm
it was -- i was surprised it was a hellish weekend here in the state of california this weekend. we have three major wildfires, two of which are not far from us in hollywood. hundreds of homes have been burned. i don't know how many thousands of families were evacuated from their homes. but you guys are happy. that's okay. [ laughter ] quite a few members of our staff were affected by the fires. some very seriously. i want to mention one of them. our coexecutive producer, erin. she and her daughter and husband. correct me if i had this wrong. they had to leave their house in the middle of the night. they got a call from the sheriff saying get out. they came over to our house. i'm not making light of this. this actually happened. this was a terrible situation. they got no notice. 1:00 a.m., erin, you grab your daughter, charlie, what else did you get, passport? papers? that kind of stuff? >> yes. >> jimmy: anything that seemed super important. erin's husband, david. this is what he grabbed from the house.
11:37 pm
[ laughter ] his tom brady doll. david is a really big patriots fan. [ cheers and applause ] apparently that doll is one of the three most important items in his life. i had to take a picture because they are so happy together. look at them. [ laughter ] anyway, the fire burned down a number of famous movie and tv sets, including the set of "west world." the bachelor mansion was partially destroyed. [ audience moaning ] the guest house burned down, but the main house is okay. usually when something spreads like wildfire at the bachelor mansion, it's herpes. [ laughter ] this was a switch. we offer our gratitude for the men and women who risk their lives to fight these fires. [ cheers and applause ] they did an incredible job and do it so bravely. if you want to help the victims, the best way is to donate to the american red cross.
11:38 pm
text ca wildfires to 90999 to make a $10 donation. they're always there for us. the american red cross. we shouldn't expect much help from the white house. as the fires raged, in the middle of all this the president weighed in with this touching message of support. he wrote, "there is no reason for these massive, deadly, and costly forest fires in california except that forest management is so poor. billions of dollars are given each year with so many lives lost all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. remedy now or no fed payments. [ audience booing ] he didn't even throw us a roll of paper towels like he did in puerto rico. everything about this tweet was wrong. the federal government manages most of the forest land in california, not the state. he's the one who cut the funding. california actually pays more money to the federal government than it gets back. and of course he does nothing about climate change, which is why these fires happen.
11:39 pm
why get tangled up in facts when you can take shots at people who voted for hillary instead of you. donald trump is the only guy who went to see "backdraft" and rooted for the backdraft. someone must have said, those tweets didn't go over so well in california. about two hours later he tweeted our hearts are with those who are fighting the fires and the families of the 11 who have died in the destruction. god bless them all. that's better, but the next day, the real donald was back. with proper forest management, we can stop the devastation constantly going on in california. get smart. yeah, all right, you go first, and then we will, okay? [ cheers and applause ] i understand that california probably isn't the president's favorite state, but he can pretend to care about us, like he does with donald jr. just do that for a little while. [ laughter ] while trump was stoking fires in california he was burning bridges overseas. the president was in paris over

the weekend to mark the 100-year anniversary of the end of world war i. his kgbff was there, vladimir putin. again chummy with putin. look at his smile when his sugar vladdy showed up. i have only seen that dopey grin one other time. [ laughter ] that's when the colonel paid a visit. look at this videotape. vladimir putin comes in and cocky, he walks, says hello to macron. shakes angela merkel ket's hand. trump, he bites his lip. i would like to see that in slow motion. vladimir putin with a quick hello to merkel and macron and now he gets to trump. who actually, again, bites on his lip, he's so excited to see him. [ laughter ] and then, and then things get so hot, i guess on the inside, yeah.
11:41 pm
[ laughter ] airs out his coat. that was not the bigliest embarrassment in paris. much was made of the fact that he skipped the world war i memorial on saturday because of weather. the white house claims the president's chopper was unable to take off because of rain. basically they said our country's most "sports illustrated" sophisticated helicopter has the same weakness as an amazon package you leave on your porch. [ laughter ] while he could have driven, he didn't want to cause a traffic jam. he's very considerate that way. bottom line, he missed the memorial because he didn't want his hair to get wet. he didn't want us to see. when it rains, his hair looks like this. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] that's right. that was bad. also, relations between trump and french president macron were tense. macron took a shot at the embrace of nationalism and he said nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism.
11:42 pm

[ laughter ] back here at home, last week the president's least favorite reporter, jim acosta of cnn, had his press credential suspended supposedly because he put his hand on a white house intern while jockeying for a microphone. acosta did not do that but sarah huckabee sanders said he did, and she tweeted a doctored video doctored from infowars to make it look worse than it was, which still wasn't bad. she said it was not altered. the president and white house spokes monster kellyanne conway agreed. >> when you say doctored, you are dishonest.
11:43 pm
it wasn't doctored. they gave a close up view. that's not doctoring. >> first of all what do you mean by edited or doctored video? he either put his hands on her and grabbed the mike back or he did not. he clearly did -- >> he clearly did, but the video was altered. there are experts who have looked at that, speed it up -- >> that's not altered, that's sped up. they do it all the time in sports to see if there's a first down or a touchdown. >> jimmy: well, no, first of all they don't speed clips up in sports, they slow them down. [ laughter ] that's why a replay is called a slow mo replay and not a speed mo replay. [ laughter ] i sometimes get the feeling kellyanne conway is like the bus in the move yao "speed." she has to tell 50 lies an hour or she'll explode. [ laughter ] speeding up is altering and can be misleading. watch what happens when we alter this footage of the queen.
11:44 pm
[ laughter ] >> jimmy: right, now she's going to be banned from the white house. [ applause ] now here's another great moment from this weekend. an associate of trump's close friend roger stone said he expects to be indicted soon by robert mueller and the special counsel looking into the russia situation, which could be potentially the beginning of the end of all of this. trump last week installed a friendly new acting attorney general named matt whitaker who trump either does or definitely does not know. >> i didn't speak to matt whitaker. i don't know matt whitaker. matt whitaker -- i don't know matt whitaker. i didn't know matt whitaker. matt whitaker is a highly respected man but i didn't know matt whitaker. in all fairness to matt when i customer, who again i didn't know. matt whitaker is a great guy, i know matt whitaker. >> jimmy: can you ever truly know someone?

i'll get a lot of mail that i'm biased or my bias is showing. no, i'm telling you openly, here's where i stand, here's where i'm coming from.as cseatiw would you grade donald trump on his first two years as president, if you had to give him a letter grade? [ light laughter ] >> banana. you can't grade him as a conservative because there is very little that is conservative about him. a fifth grader's understanding of what conservatism is. cutting spending and lowering the debt and the deficit, limited government, keeping families together, anti-protectionism. these are the understandings of what conservatism as a movement means. he doesn't really hew to much of that so it's hard to give him a grade from that point of view. >> jimmy: do your fellow conservatives get upset that you are not defending him on television? do you get that from people? >> constantly.
12:27 am
from the second he started running. for people like me, it was clear he was not going to run as a republican. he was not going to run as a conservative. he can run any way he wants, but let's call a spade a spade. and i just get -- even last week with the election. e-mail after e-mail. text after text. what happened to you? you used to be a conservative. i have to be like, dad! [ laughter ] i did not change! y'all changed! i believe in the same things i always did. >> jimmy: you are in the same spot. a lot of other people -- >> not everybody, but a disappointing amount of people, especially congressional republicans, have pushed snooze on conservatism while donald trump is running the party and running the country. that's been disorienting to say the least. but also -- disappointing. >> jimmy: did you interview donald trump when you worked at fox news?
12:28 am
>> i don't believe i interviewed him. i did television with him. >> jimmy: uh-huh. you were in the room -- >> it's not a euphemism. >> jimmy: while he was talking. yes. >> we did projects together and i did television with don jr. i got to know the family a little. certainly through the campaign, i covered him a lot. >> jimmy: do you know him personally at all? >> i know him a little. anything i say is going to sound way more intimate and tawdry. and scandalous. >> jimmy: perfect. that's what we're looking for. guillermo, get "e.t." on the line. >> guillermo: i will, yeah. >> jimmy: all right. >> look, i cover him and i worked with him on some projects. as close as it got was i moved into a trump building in manhattan years ago. suddenly a cutting board arrived with my initials burned into it from donald trump welcoming me to the building. >> jimmy: he does woodworking? [ laughter ] >> i'm sure by hand.
12:29 am
yeah. a housewarming gift. >> jimmy: how about that. >> i wish i'd sent it back. >> jimmy: do you use the cutting board? >> i do. almost every night. >> jimmy: you think of him while you chop vegetables. >> i try not to. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: that's pretty crazy. what else are you doing while you're here in l.a.? you've got some other stuff going on. >> i do. i have a couple of development projects. >> jimmy: with donald trump or without? >> no. explicitly not. >> jimmy: gotcha, all right. >> i found over the past few years, both as a human and someone who has to cover politics all day that i need an escape hatch. i have tried to find other stories to tell. when you are looking, it's amazing how many you will find. so one that i found that i'm working on developing is the story of the first openly gay revolutionary war hero. >> jimmy: really? >> yes. barron von stuben and he was fabulous.
12:30 am
>> jimmy: really? barron von stuben? >> yes. he was prussian and he conned his way to come over as inspector general. benjamin franklin and george washington said sure, we will bring you over. he arrived in a fur-covered horse-drawn sled with a miniature greyhound and a cadre of boyfriends and secretaries behind him. >> jimmy: wow! >> it was amazing. if people know him at all, he know he really revolutionized the way the military lays out camp. to this day we use a lot of the things that he taught us. >> jimmy: he did, wow. >> yeah. what people don't know is he was openly gay. he was almost the first don't ask, don't tell. >> jimmy: that's a operate great story. >> i'm excited to tell it. >> jimmy: you're finding out about this out here? >> no! >> jimmy: i don't know. >> i'm trying to convince people out here. >> jimmy: you are definitely getting kicked out of the republican party. [ laughter ] you have about five minutes left
