we'r we're back with some troubling behavior from an airport baggage handler in phoenix. a passenger on a southwest airlines flight caught this worker tossing boxes from a conveyer belt like you see there. at least one box appeared to read "live tropical fish." southwest calls the video deeply concerning and says the baggage handler will be retrained. >> more like dead tropical fish at this point. >> yeah. all right. overseas, an american missionary has been killed by tribes people off the coast of india. >> 26-year-old john chau of alabama died on the remote island of north sentinel. it's home to a tribe that has little contact with outsiders and known to defend themselves with bows and arrows. the fishermen who brought him to the island have been arrested.

we're hearing some new details about a terrifying fire in dallas. with an apartment building engulfed in flames and neighbors rushing to help, a mother had to do the unthinkable. >> she dropped her baby from a window on the upper floor. abc's linsey davis explains. >> reporter: police body camera video shows the frantic moments at this dallas apartment complex as police and residents race to help as flames shoot through the roof. one mother forced to toss her baby out of a third floor window, begging for someone below to catch her little baby. >> it was terrifying. because i didn't know if i was going to come down with her or that would be the last time i was holding my child. it was just terrifying. >> reporter: safely caught in the arms of a stranger. >> caught the baby with the curl on, just like you caught a football. >> reporter: officials say in all six people had to jump in order to escape. some pulled a mattress from a downstairs apartment to cushion their falls.

good morning. i'm janai norman. >> and i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top stories on this thanksgiving day on "world news now." president trump is firing back after a rare rebuke from the supreme court chief justice john roberts. roberts defended judicial independence, writing, "we do not have obama judges or trump judges," but the president insists obama-appointed judges are making the country unsafe. a new policy from the trump administration would reportedly force asylum seekers to wait in mexico while their cases are preceded. that's according to "the washington post." it's a major break from current policy which typically allows migrants to wait in the u.s. a family in dallas is recovering after neighbors rushed to their rescue as their

labels of a federal judge as an obama judge. the president immediately hit back. >> now more from abc's cecilia vega. >> reporter: an extraordinary rebuke of the president from the supreme court's chief justice. it came after president trump lashed out at an obama-appointed judge from the ninth circuit court of appeals who temporarily blocked his plan to crack down on asylum seekers. >> well, you go to the ninth circuit and it's a disgrace. i'm going to put in a major complaint because you cannot win if you're us, a case in the ninth circuit. this was an obama judge. and i'll tell you what, it's not gonna happen like this anymore. >> reporter: that triggered a rare reprimand from chief justice john roberts. he wrote, "we do not have obama judges or trump judges, bush judges or clinton judges, what we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them." and he added, "that independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for."

>> the active duty troops deployed to the southern border now have expanded authority to use lethal force to protect border patrol agents. defense secretary jim mattis says the troops will be allowed to briefly detain migrants in the event of disorder or violence but he says the military will remain within the law, which prohibits troops from carrying out law enforcement duties, including arrests. well, travelers today in upstate new york and new england may run into some trouble. >> heavy snow squalls are coming in from the great lakes causing visibility problems on the roads and possibly delaying flights throughout the northeast. it will be one of the coldest thanksgivings on record. >> and the gusty winds we've been telling you about here in new york could make it unsafe to fly the macy's parade balloons. we'll check the forecast in a minute. in the meantime, the biggest problem for travelers this holiday is there are just too many of them. abc's daria albinger has the story. >> reporter: over 50 million americans are on the move this thanksgiving holiday, traveling at least 50 miles from home between now and sunday, braving

>> very busy on the weather map there the in the south. paul, thank you. breaking overnight, a 2-year-old has been killed and ten other people are injured after a house fire near cleveland. the victims are reportedly an amish family living in a single-family home. some victims were rushed to the hospital by helicopter. investigators now trying to figure out what caused that fire. and rain in northern california today should help firefighters battling the historic wildfire, but it could make life more difficult for crews trying to find the nearly 600 people who are still missing. the death toll now stands at 83. damage from both major fires in the state this month is estimated at $13 billion. the outspoken attorney who has taken on president trump will not face a felony domestic violence charge. the los angeles district attorney is declining to prosecute michael avenatti after his ex-girlfriend said he dragged her out of bed and hit her in the face with pillows. avenatti could still face a misdemeanor charge. he denies the accusations.

we'r we're back with some troubling behavior from an airport baggage handler in phoenix. a passenger on a southwest airlines flight caught this worker tossing boxes from a conveyer belt like you see there. at least one box appeared to read "live tropical fish." southwest calls the video deeply concerning and says the baggage handler will be retrained. >> more like dead tropical fish at this point. >> yeah. all right. overseas, an american missionary has been killed by tribes people off the coast of india. >> 26-year-old john chau of alabama died on the remote island of north sentinel. it's home to a tribe that has little contact with outsiders and known to defend themselves with bows and arrows. the fishermen who brought him to the island have been arrested. we're hearing some new details about a terrifying fire in dallas.

with an apartment building engulfed in flames and neighbors rushing to help, a mother had to do the unthinkable. >> she dropped her baby from a window on the upper floor. abc's linsey davis explains. >> reporter: police body camera video shows the frantic moments at this dallas apartment complex as police and residents race to help as flames shoot through the roof. one mother forced to toss her baby out of a third floor window, begging for someone below to catch her little baby. >> it was terrifying. because i didn't know if i was going to come down with her or that would be the last time i was holding my child. it was just terrifying. >> reporter: safely caught in the arms of a stranger. >> caught the baby with the curl on, just like you caught a football. >> reporter: officials say in all six people had to jump in order to escape. some pulled a mattress from a downstairs apartment to cushion
