>> it feels good, doesn't it? >> i am the thorn in between two roses this morning. we've got a lot to get to including our all-star dream team of chefs. there they are and they're here for thanksgiving 911, one of our favorite traditions. >> exactly. they are answering your last-minute questions all morning long to help you get ready for the big holiday feast. >> we haven't heard it yet but we have a turkey sound effect that we'll be playing. >> a siren? >> there it is. >> the gobble. >> yes, very sophisticated. we'll start here with that arctic blast we mentned at the top of the show bringing brutal cold to the northeast this morning, especially for anybody out at the parades. our ginger zee is right there in philadelphia at the oldest thanksgiving day parade in america and this just in from philly, ginger, they're grounding some of those balloons today because of the winds. >> reporter: that's right. they have taken some of the floats and have had to compact some of the routes they're

taking. i think it will be more than just the wind. it will be the temperature and the amount of time all these folks, including ourselves, are exposed to the floats. it's not just the oldest parade in the area. could be one of the coldest. let's look at the numbers. we're talking about the coldest in decades for many people in the northeast, if not the coldest ever for a place like burlington or providence. looking at some number, 8 new york city, what it feels like, 7 below in burlington. 5 in buffalo, which, already at its coldest numbers. and then it's not going to rebound a lot. that's the problem with this parade and with others is that it's not like through the morning the sun comes out because the sun is out. that's not going to help you. it's still going to feel like it's in the single digits and by tomorrow, we don't go that far. 18 new york city. and by the time we reach the week end is when we finally warm up, guys. >> that is just a brutal map. all right, stay warm, ginger. >> i like to say every year it's the excuse to get in your onesie and get on the couch. >> that's right.

the snuggie, too. >> oh, wow. you guys are a great team this morning. now to the biggest thanksgiving parade, the one that's right here in new york, about 3.5 million people are expected to line the streets this morning. it's going to be a cold one and they'll brave the temperatures. security will also be extremely tight. and sam champion is braving the parade route for us this morning. sam, the big question this morning, will those world famous balloons be grounded by the wind. >> paula, it's been the big question here. as soon as the weather forecast was for a brutal cold morning, and the winds 25 to 35 miles an hour, the big question was, will the balloons fly? well, the answer to that is, yes. everything is looking good. that's good news for my clowns, right? early morning temperature, between 19 and 21 as everyone started to line up. the big question was about the

winds. the magic number one 23. when you get to 23 miles an hour, you can't fly those balloons. i was a young reporter in the '90s when the cat in the hat balloon, think it was '87. a strong wind blue the balloon into a pole. knocked the pole down. hurt someone on the ground. everyone wants to see the balloons. but making the decision is a hard one. everything is in good shape. we're dressed in layers. where are you from? >> new york. >> how many layers you to have on? a lot. >> five pants, six shirts. >> i'm doing the same thing. i may have an adult onesie on. just saying. back to the studio. we're ready for the parade. we'll have lots of fun for you throughout the parade route. whit?

>> we want to go to dramatic train trouble overnight. those amtrak train cars separating while travels from albany to new york city. hundreds of passengers were stranded in the bitter cold. abc's gio benitez is at penn station with the very latest for us. gio, good morning. >> reporter: hey, whit, good morning to you. that train was headed toward this railroad station when the unthinkable happened. now those passengers are telling their stories. overnight a nightmare for passengers aboard this amtrak. >> i realized that we were no longer connected to the rest of the train. we're in trouble. >> reporter: on the busiest travel day of the year, two of the train's cars suddenly disconnected from the rest of the train outside albany, new york. the doors appearing to fall off. hundreds of passengers stuck on the tracks exposed to freezing cold temperatures. >> a train car came loose from the train that was traveling southbound.

>> as soon as i saw that we were detached, i felt like we were in a movie. >> reporter: one passenger aboard the locomotive traveling from montreal to new york city tweeting, i heard a pop, smelled electrical burning, and felt a rush of cold air. another adding, we are like a sitting duck on the tracks. hours went by before the passengers were eventually transferred to another train reaching new york city in the early morning hours. >> it feels great to be home. home safe. and to be able to go and finally see my family. >> reporter: and thankfully nobody was hurt here. amtrak now tells us it is investigating this incident. those passengers did end up right here at penn station. a little late and maybe a little shaken up, whit. >> at least they got where they were going. gio benitez, thanks so much. appreciate it. plaul? new developments in that mysterious fire in new jersey. being investigated as a multiple homicide and arson case. officials believe three of the victims, the wife and two children, were stabbed, and the husband shot before that fire

was set. abc's adrienne bankert joins us now. what a sad story. >> reporter: it's tragic. the neighborhood where this happened is an upscale neighborhood home to celebrities and horse sanctuaries. they're not only looking into who killed the family but why hours earlier another member of the family set his own home on fire. that mysterious new jersey mansion fire one of the most heinous that officials have seen. they said keith carniero was found shot to death outside his million-dollar home and the bodies of his wife jennifer and who they believe to be their two children inside. investigators suspect that all three were stabbed. their home then set on fire. >> we believe that in some form or fashion that this family was targeted. >> reporter: and in a shocking twist, keith's brother and business partner, paul caneiro is arrested charged with aggravated arson of a different property, the same day police believe he set his own home on

fire. the caneiro brothers own two businesses together. a technology consulting firm as well as a pest management company. keith was the best man at paul's wedding. according to the criminal complaint paul used gasoline to ignite his own house while his wife and two daughters were inside. thankfully they got out safely. his attorney tells abc news caneiro will assert his innocence for the charge as well as any other potential charges. investigators say they believe the house fires may be connected but paul caneiro is not currently named as a suspect in the homicide case. >> we really hope that we can solve this. any leads, even if it's an indirect, please contact us. any little piece of the puzzle might make a difference. >> reporter: that burned home is not safe for investigators to go into. once county engineers give the all-clear they'll be able to get in and determine just how that fire started. >> horrifying story, adrienne, thank you. we turn to president trump and that public rebuke from the chief justice of the supreme court, john roberts.

roberts issuing a rare and critical statement after the president attacked a federal court and singled out one of the judges as, quote, an obama judge. white house correspondent tara pal mary has more from mar-a-lago in florida. tara, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. it was a stunning message from the leader of the high court who has typically held back from weighing in on the news of the day. now as president trump vows to take his legal battles to supreme court, all eyes are on chief justice roberts who could be seen as a potential swing vote. overnight, chief justice john roberts standing up to president trump after the president lashed out at an obama-appointed judge on the ninth circuit court for temporarily blocking his order to curb asylum seekers. >> i'm going to put in major complaint. because you cannot win if you're us, a case in the ninth circuit, and i think it's a disgrace. this was an obama judge, and i'll tell you what, it's not going to happen like this anymore.

>> reporter: roberts, who was appointed to the supreme court by president george w. bush in 2005, speaking out in a rare rebuke, releasing a statement saying, quote, we do not have obama judges or trump judges, bush judges or clinton judges. what we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them. but the president not letting it end there, firing back. sorry, chief justice john roberts. but you do, indeed, have obama judges, and they have a much different point of view than the people who are charged with the safety of our country. it's not the first time the men have come head to head. as a candidate, the now-president not holding back about the judge leading the highest court. >> justice roberts turned out to be an absolute disaster. he turned out to be an absolute disaster because he gave us obamacare. >> reporter: president trump says he'll fight the ruling on the ban all the way to the supreme court where he'll likely need the vote of justice roberts.

lucky to be alive. miraculously we want to stress this unharmed. >> oh, my gosh. >> after falling on the railroad tracks as the train pulled away. she's 1 years old. this happened in india. reportedly slipping out of her mother's arms as they were getting off the train. but we do want to stress, she was unharmed. it is incredible. >> that video just takes your breath away. she's okay but we do want to begin with the death of that young american missionary on a remote island in the indian ocean. officials say he was killed by members of what's thought to be one of the oldest tribes in the world. and abc foreign correspondent james longman is in london for us this morning. good morning to you, james. >> reporter: good morning, paula. this is an extraordinary story. the tribe we're talking about has lived in isolation for 60,000 years. there are a number of them all over the 500 or so islands in this part of the indian ocean. even though this tribe is known to be more hostile than others,

the young missionary who planned this trip for a month chose to go ashore alone. this morning, police are working to find the body of an american missionary abroad killed by an endangered tribe possibly using arrows on an isolated island in the indian ocean. authorities say 26-year-old john khau, an adventurer who was preaching try ining christianit documenting on instagram his many travels across the globe was killed on what police are describing as a misplaced adventure in the highly restricted area. north sentinel island is home to the sentinelese people, and they have fiercely resisted any contact with others, even after the 2004 tsunami, a member of the tribe was photographed on the beach firing arrows at a helicopter sent to check on their well-being. it's thought chau paid local fishermen to bring him there

illegally. >> as we now know that didn't happen. >> reporter: after dropping him at the island the fishermen say they returned two days later and saw what they believed to be his body being buried on the shore. police say he was likely killed with bows and arrows. according to journals he kept published by "washington post" he successfully made it onto the island bearing gifts. in one excerpt he writes one of the younger tribesmen shot at him with an arrow, piercing his waterproof bible. he wrote you guys might think i'm crazy but it's worth while to declare jesus to these people and adding, god, i don't want to die. he went back the next day and was never seen alive again. while he also wrote to his mother, please don't be mad at them or god if i get killed. a sadly prophetic message. the fishermen have been arrested for helping him because contact with the sentinelese people. is illegal. what next? people have now got to work out a way to get chau's body off the island. whit? >> incredible. james longman, thanks so much.

we appreciate it. now to that life-saving catch. one mother dropping her baby from a burning building into a stranger's strong arms. many other good samaritans also rushing to save their neighbors from the devastating flames, abc's linsey davis has the story. >> reporter: this is the breathtaking moment a complete stranger helped save a little girl from a burning building. watch again, that's 1-year-old kirsten thomas, her mother shuntara putting her faith in byron campbell, a complete stranger, to catch her baby girl from a terrifying three-story drop. >> it was just terrifying. >> so she finally trusted me and she dropped the baby and i caught the baby. caught the baby with a curl. just like catching a football. >> reporter: he's not the only superhero samaritan who was there. this group jumping in to help police aid countless others escape the dangerous fire at a dallas apartment complex wednesday morning.

>> we got a lot of fire on the third floor. >> reporter: police body camera video shows the frantic moments as officers help residents and young children race to escape. >> come on, come on. come on, come on, this way. >> reporter: neighbors also pitching in to help. one who just moved into the building grabbing her brand-new mattss to cushion the falls of those forced to jump. this morning, kirsten's mom is giving thanks for the kindness of strangers. >> i have my child because of him. she gets to live another day because of him. >> reporter: and that baby girl's father patrick was among those who had to jump, as well. he had to be treated after punching the window in order for them to escape. there were no fatalities. according to dallas fire and rescue two residents and a firefighter were taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. they still don't know cause of the fire. but what a nice thanksgiving story. that mother saying because of a complete stranger her daughter

we're serving moist turkey. as you see i have the turkey breast separated from the bird and just took a short knife and we'll put our stuffing in here. you can use your store bought stuffing. i have toasted bread, herbs and garlic and stuff it inside and secure it with toothpicks and put it in a roasting pan like so and have lot of butter too. once again the turkey needs love and put butter inside the pocket as well as on top of it. >> this turkey cops with a defibrillator. >> one time of the year, we can do this. we'll put it in our roasting pan and pour in wine because wine always is great with cooking. and then a little chicken broth and that's what you'll use to keep basting that turkey every 20 to 30 mens and roast and you'll have christie skin on the outside too. no dry turkey there. >> okay. spin the wheel. let's see who is next. spin that beautiful wheel.

[ laughter ] okay, we'll take yukon potatoes, cut them the same shape and put them in cold water with salt, cook them all the way. nothing worse than an al dente potato and take your old-fashioned potato masher. while it's hot you add cream that's warm, some milk that's warm. always warm to warm. and guess what, yes, butter. >> there you go. you got to have butter. >> butter makes everything better. >> and salt. salt is something that a potato can take more and more of. you really need to salt it because there's a lot of density and white pepper so it stays nice and white. nice and lump-free.
