thanks to the phoenix fire department. crews there got johnny moto out of a tight squeeze yesterday afternoon. he found himself wedged between two boulders in what's known as fat man's pass. his wife and a couple of good samaritans tried to free him but couldn't so firefighters had to use their hands and brute force to free him. they told moto his ordeal was a first for them. >> they told me i was probably the only person who ever got wedged in fat man pass. you can tell i'm really not that fat. right? i'm not that big. say that please. you, too. all right. thanks. >> moto said he was a little worried when he was slipping deeper into the space. he says he's okay but his wife gave him a little grief for messing up their thanksgiving dinner. >> do you think he would have been able to slip through earlier in the day before the dinner and then -- >> maybe. after it was like, no good. >> fat man pass, not today. communities across california have been coming together to make sure everyone had a good thanksgiving. >> volunteers and good samaritans turned out in droves, giving their time and food to

help the more than 13,000 families left homeless by those wildfires. here is abc's natalie brunell. >> reporter: tens of thousands of holiday meals served up to those who lost everything in california's camp and woolsey fires. >> if people don't have a place to go for thanksgiving they can just come here. and i feel like this kind of feels at home. >> reporter: volunteers have been preparing the feasts all week, offering a sense of comfort for communities like paradise where the camp fire devastated entire neighborhoods. >> we had about 14% of our chico employees lose their homes and just about everybody else here knows at least friends or family members who have lost their homes as well. >> reporter: celebrity chefs like guy fieri among those lending a hand. >> i think that's why we call it comfort food. it helps people kind of feel a little bit better. >> reporter: even the dallas cowboys offering a tour of at&t stadium to the morgan family who lost their paradise home but managed to save their dream tickets to the team's thanksgiving day game.

arrested, charged with aggravated arson of a different property, the same day police believe he set his own home on fire. the horrifying new details about the deadly rampage at mercy hospital in chicago. >> holy [ bleep ]! >> reporter: authorities say 32-year-old juan lopez arrived just before 3:30 monday afternoon to confront his ex-fiance, e.r. doctor tamara o'neal, demanding his engagement ring back. that's when police say lopez shot and killed her. lopez then moving inside the hospital, killing chicago police officer samuel jimenez and pharmacy technician dayna less. president trump is defending his daughter under fire for using her personal e-mail to conduct government business. during the campaign the president made hillary clinton's use of private e-mail a central issue. her lawyer issued a statement saying, "while transitioning into government ms. trump sometimes used her private

good morning. i'm kendis gibson. good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm janai norman. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." the online black friday deals are officially here but do brick and mortar stores have better deals today? the best shopping strategies coming up. house republicans have subpoenaed former fbi chief james comey to answer questions about the hillary clinton e-mail investigation. they're planning a closed-door hearing but comey says he wants it out in the open to the public. overnight, a charter bus carrying members of the university of washington marching band rolling over and landed on its side while traveling on an icy stretch of road. at least 25 students were treated for minor injuries. in toronto, three jewelry store employees used swords to

online. here is dave louie from our station in san francisco. >> reporter: it used to be dozens of shoppers would camp out overnight to get so-called door-busters when stores opened on thanksgiving evening. not anymore. there were only three people at this best buy. >> i think that it's due to some of the online sales and really being able to, you know, capture some of those sales online. >> reporter: retailers do lure in shops with in-store only specials. just ask monique who is number one in line with her son enrique. >> a great lg for $699. that beats $150 anywhere else. i've already priced everything. >> reporter: however, online shopping is siphoning away sales. adobe analytics says among 80 top online sites they've racked up 3.5 billion in sales as of thanksgiving morning, eclipsing yesterday's take of 2.4 billion, which is up 32% from a year ago. the average online order is $141, up 3% from last year.

while some stores are closed all day, some have employees stocking shelves for black friday. bass pro shops in san jose is open all day and is extended its deals over five days. >> we try to spread it out to make it easier for our customers, not trying to shove it all into one day. we know they want to spend time with their families -- >> reporter: still some specials are saved for black friday. two brands of kids bikes will be $20 for six hours early friday morning. another deal is being kept under wraps to lure shoppers back. a priceless benefit, short lines to get a photo with santa claus for kids and not so little kids. >> you're spreading lots of joy. >> yes. >> thank you, santa. >> you have a good christmas. merry christmas. merry christmas. kgo's david louie there. thank you. much of the nation enjoyed the thanksgiving holiday with a side of winter. parts of the west coast received the first major snowfall of the season. drivers in soda springs, california added chains to their tires as the snow made driving difficult. >> the bitter blast of winter and record-setting temperatures

are also hitting the northeast. abc's sam champion has that story. >> reporter: a brutal blast of arctic air lashing the northeast, in some cases 30 degrees colder than normal. in boston an expected high of just 22 degrees. more than 100 years since it's been this cold on this day. >> it is bone-chilling out there and the wind is not helping. >> reporter: in philadelphia, balloons in the cities parade flying a shorter route than normal because of the gusty arctic winds. here in new york city, the coldest macy's thanksgiving day parade on record. millions look the route battling windchills feeling between like 5 and 15 degrees. officials issuing an extreme cold weather alert unusually early in the season, urging people to keep their skin covered to avoid frostbite. >> lots of layers. it's necessary. you got to go shirts, sweatshirts, more sweatshirts, jacket, scarf, anything. >> how many layers do you have on? >> a lot. five pants and six shirts.

>> reporter: a terrifying moment for the nearly 300 people on board this amtrak train. >> i realized that we were no longer connected to the rest of the train. we're in trouble. >> reporter: two cars separating from the rest of the train outside albany, new york. brutal cold air rushing in. another train taking passengers to their destinations after about a two-hour delay. >> take a look at the morning's temperatures. this arctic express jumped on the jetstream so it's traveling a little further south. the windchill for friday, look at this, 35 in chicago. down to the south, nashville all the way into raleigh, we're looking at the 20s and the 30s. it's at least 10 degrees cooler than normal in those southern areas. but here's the good news, when we get into the weekend, we start to get a mild push of air up from the south and the major cities on the east coast will jump in some cases 20 degrees back to above normal temperatures. now this was a big deal. when central park records the second coldest thanksgiving ever, it's one of the earliest record keeping places we have in

the country, since the 1800s. so this is a really big early chill. >> you know it's serious when sam breaks out that lenny kravitz-type scarf. >> the blanket. >> the blanket. our thanks to sam. the first family steered clear of the frigid weather altogether. they're in sunny palm beach. president trump and the first lady hosted a holiday dinner at mar-a-lago last night with the trump kids and grandkids. after delivering lunch to a nearby coast guard station. as trump -- as troops deployed along the southern border were treated to a thanksgiving meal. the president reached out to all five branches of the military and issued a stunning threat about the border. abc's tara palmeri has the details. >> you're special people. very, very special people and we're very proud of you. >> reporter: shortly after making thanksgiving calls to military leaders, president trump issued this drastic threat to mexico. >> we will close entry into the

country for a period of time until we can get it under control. >> to the entire border? >> the whole border. i mean the whole border. >> reporter: the president not just threatening immigration but even saying he'll stop billions of dollars in trade. >> mexico will not be able to sell their cars into the united states, where they make so many cars at great benefit to them. not at great benefit to us, by the way. >> reporter: trump also intensified his feud with chief justice john roberts over a ninth circuit court judge's decision to temporarily block his asylum ban. tweeting, "justice roberts can say what he wants but the ninth circuit is a complete and total disaster. judges must not legislate safety and security at the border or anywhere else." >> this ninth circuit, it's totally out of control. everybody knows. >> reporter: earlier in the week, roberts had made a rebuke on the president's attack on the court, saying that the independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for. >> what they're doing, what they're saying, the opinions are very unfair to law enforcement. >> reporter: the president also

threatened to shut down the government if he doesn't get money for border security, including the wall, and he's now raising the possibility of military confrontations with troops recently deployed on the border. >> if they have to, they're going to use lethal force. i've given the okay. i hope they don't have to. but you're dealing with a minimum of 500 serious criminals. >> reporter: president trump took questions on a wide range of issues but the final question was what his most thankful for this thanksgiving. >> for having a great family and for having made a tremendous difference in this country. i've made a tremendous difference in the country. this country is so much stronger now than it was when i took office that you wouldn't believe it. >> reporter: president trump said he's ready to fight the ruling on the asylum ban all the way to the supreme court. tara palmeri, abc news, west palm beach, florida. turning now to the death toll from north california's camp fire that has now reached 84 with more than 500 names remaining on the missing list. thousands displaced by those

deadly and devastating wildfires were served thanksgiving meals by volunteers across the state. celebrity chefs including guy fieri and volunteers prepared 15,000 meals for survivors. thousands are spending the holiday in the makeshift camps they're now calling home. first responders gave up their special day to serve wildfire survivors and former california governor arnold schwarzenegger was also on hand to serve. >> we're giving out some sandwiches here. some special high-protein sandwiches today because i made them. this is what it's all about, everybody coming together and giving back something to their community. hasta la vista, baby. do it or else. >> the so-called camp fire is now 95% contained. let's talk some football. nfl fans gorged themselves with a full plate of thanksgiving football. >> you know, one of my friends is an anchor down in west palm. she said we had to talk about the cowboys today because she knew they were going to win today in dallas. she was right. the cowboys share the nfc east lead after beating washington.

now to the dramatic rescue of a 29-year-old american stranded in shark-infested waters off the coast of australia. >> he survived 12 hours in those waters overnight after his catamaran capsized. here is abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: this 29-year-old is thankful just to be alive this thanksgiving. levi verwoest spent 12 hours overnight sitting on his boat after it capsized off the coast

of australia. >> i noticed the boat slowing down and went out on deck and there was a hatch cover missing, allowing water to flow in. by the time i was able to get out of the cabin and even attempt to do anything, the hull was already full of water. the boat just went -- capsized. you know, in under a minute. >> reporter: verwoest is from hawaii but he spent the last three years exploring the great barrier reef in his catamaran. the sailor tried to right his boat but couldn't. after a long cold night in shark-infested waters, verwoest activated his personal locater beacon. >> if i hadn't, i would still be floating out there hoping someone would pass. >> reporter: rescuers were able to reach him by helicopter just 12 minutes later. verwoest says within one hour of calling for help he was back on shore where he was fully examined by a medical team. he plans to continue sailing as soon as possible. linsey davis, abc news, new

intentionally tossed on tuesday and say it does not match the concrete on the overpass. the shelton family hoping for an arrest in the case spending the holiday honoring their dad. >> this thanksgiving i'm thankful for my father. he's one of the best men i've ever known. >> reporter: shelton's family says he was looking forward to retiring soon. investigators say there were no cameras on that overpass where he died but they are reviewing surveillance from cameras nearby, hoping for any clues. alex perez, abc news, chicago. in northeastern utah, two teenage boys are in custody this morning after stealing a small plane from a private airstrip. investigators believe the boys were able to get access to a tractor and drive it on to the airstrip. that's where they say the boys stole a fixed wing single-engine plane and took off flying. eventually landed safely and were arrested. all right. maybe some deer needed a few bucks.

an arizona hiker is giving thanks to the phoenix fire department. crews there got johnny moto out of a tight squeeze yesterday afternoon. he found himself wedged between two boulders in what's known as fat man's pass. his wife and a couple of good samaritans tried to free him but couldn't so firefighters had to use their hands and brute force to free him. they told moto his ordeal was a first for them. >> they told me i was probably the only person who ever got wedged in fat man pass. you can tell i'm really not that fat. right? i'm not that big. say that please. you, too. all right. thanks. >> moto said he was a little worried when he was slipping deeper into the space. he says he's okay but his wife gave him a little grief for messing up their thanksgiving dinner. >> do you think he would have been able to slip through earlier in the day before the dinner and then -- >> maybe. after it was like, no good. >> fat man pass, not today. communities across california have been coming together to make sure everyone had a good thanksgiving. >> volunteers and good
