apps to freeor shoppers, there are all kinds of features helping to make this black friday the biggest shopping day of the year. the days of big box store stampedes may be over. but the lines this black friday still forming. >> welcome to blk california, florida to new york, eager shoppers lining up to snag the best deals. >> got up, cooked and had that thanksgiving dinner then we head out to do our black friday shopping like we do every year. >> reporter: many deal seekers started on thanksgiving. an estimated 34 million americans shopping in stores or online thursday alone. >> we're getting presents that most people couldn't afford unless they were $200, $400, $600 off. >> reporter: black friday though still expected to be the biggest shopping day of the year hitting $23 billion in sales up from $21 billion this time last year. store coming up with new ways to

black friday got off to a violent start in alabama. at least two people were shot inside a mall near birmingham. you see a bit of the chaos sending shoppers running for safety. reports say gunshots erupted inside the river chase galleria in hoover. police say an 18-year-old and 12-year-old were injured and an officer killed the gunman. also breaking overnight this time on the west coast, a bus carrying members of the university of washington marching band rolled over on its side injuring some students. the accident took place on an icy stretch of interstate 90 in central washington. at least 20 people were treated for minor injuries. we've learned that band members will resume their trip this morning to the state's annual big game between the university of washington and washington state. the former fbi director james comey and former attorney general loretta lynch have been subpoenaed by the house judiciary committee to testify behind closed doors. comey says he's happy to answer questions. but in a public hearing to avoid what he calls selective leaking and distortion. now, republicans have accused

the fbi and justice department of bias in the hillary clinton email investigation and the russia probe. president trump is expressing frustration over his struggle to implement hard-line immigration policies to address caravans of migrants heading to the u.s. to seek asylum. as thousands of troops deploy to the southern border, they were treated to a thanksgiving meal. the president threatened to shut down the border completely andtx abs ra palmeri has more. >> they're special people, very, very special people, and we're very proud of you. >> reporter: shortly after making thanksgiving calls to military leaders, president trump issued this drastic threat to mexico. >> we will close entry into the country for a period of time until we can get it under control. >> the entire border. >> the whole border. wholeor just threatening immigration but even saying he'll stop billions of dollars in trade. >> mexico will not be able to sell their cars into the united states where they make so many cars at greatenit to them,

not at great benefit to us, by the way. >> reporter: trump also intensified his feud with chief justice john roberts over a ninth circuit judge's decision to temporarily block his asylum ban tweeting, justice roberts can say what he wants, but the ninth circuit is a complete and total disaster. judges must not legislate security and safety at the border or anywhere else. >> the ninth circuit, everybody knows it's totally out of control. >> reporter: earlier in the week roberts had made a rare rebuke of the president's attack on the court saying, that independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for. >> what they're doing, what they're saying, the opinions are very unfair to law enforcement. >> reporter: the president also threatened to shut down the government if he doesn't get money for border security including the wall, and he's now raising the possibility of deadly military confrontations with troops recently deployed on the border. >> they have to. they're going to use lethal force. i've given the okay. yeah, they have to. i hope they don't have to, but, you know, you're dealing minimum of 500 serious criminals. >> reporter: president trump took questions on a wide range of issues, but the final question was what he's most

weather on this black friday morning. good morning. taking a look at the nation we're looking for cold weather in the northeast, wet throughout the deep south central part of the country and a mix for the northwest corner of the country and now we start off in the northeast, high pressure dominating keeping the cold air in place, quite cold, soaking showers throughout the southeast and tennessee valley region with moisture pumping up in the south central portion in arkansas, louisiana, mississippi as well as going into portions of texas but dry air filtering behind it, showers will filter from the midwest throughout the great lakes region pretty quickly. for the northwest we're looking for an outbreak of snow showers, snow to the valley floor and significant accumulation in the mountains with travel delays throughout i-84, i-90 on friday going into saturday as that snow begins to move a little further inland, and then for the southwest corner of the country going into friday more wildfire relief with improved air quality and we're looking for a risk for mudslides and debris flows

to serve food to victims of northern california's camp fire. >> hundreds of volunteers served thanksgiving day meals to those who lost everything in the state's historic wildfires. >> abc's natalie brunell has more. >> reporter: tens of thousands of holiday meals served up to those who lost everything in california's camp and woolsey f to go for thanksgiving, they can just come here, and i feel like this kind of feels at home. >> reporter: volunteers have been preparing the feasts all week offering a sense of comfort for communities like paradise where the camp fire devastated entire neighborhoods. >> we had about 14% of our chico employees lose their homes, and just about everybody else here knows at least friends or family members who have lost their homes as well. >> reporter: celebrity chefs like guy fieri among those lending a hand. >> i think that's why they call it comfort food. it helps people feel a little bit better. >> reporter: even the dallas cowboys offering a tour of at&t stadium to the morgan family who lost their paradise home but

managed to save their dream tickets to the thanksgiving day game.otr igted toms of e us a m>>te isout woolse. lost homes even getting care packages and gift bags made by other children. >> when it's coming from other children, that's i think about as good as it gets. >> reporter: volunteers are already busy organizing similar events and tour drives for the upcoming december holidays. donations and children's gifts have been pouring in as people open up their hearts during the season of giving. natalie brunell, abc news, los angeles. authorities are asking for help to help locate a suspect in a deadly concrete tossing incident in nashville. 54-year-old joe shelton died after someone tossed a large chunk of concrete from an overpass. it smashed through the windshield of his car as he drove to work. investigators say it was likely thrown intentionally. now shelton's family is

heartbroken and mourning. >> he's someone we could all lean on. he was a great person all around and a joy to everyone that came to him. losing him is losing the foundation of our family. >> the shelton family is hoping that police make an arrest soon but investigators say it was dark outside, and there were no surveillance cameras on the bridge. in trouble as well after allegedly stealing an airplane. police say the 14-year-old and 15-year-old took the single engine plane from a private airstrip. they allegedly took off from jensen near the colorado state line and landed at a small airport 15 miles away where they were arrested. they're being held at a youth detention center. so this atm sparked some confusion in a forest along the coast of maine. a woman found the machine while walking in deer aisle. now, the local sheriff hadn't heard about any missing atms and then the owner came clean.
