>> yesterday about manx and giving thanks today about breaking the banks. shoppers all across the country hitting stores for those black friday savings. look at those massive crowds filing into the famous new york city macy's overnight and the frenzy really getting under way. which brings us to that breaking news overnight. shots were fired inside this alabama mall sending frantic shoppers running for their lives and abc's adrienne bankert has the story. >> reporter: overnight, reports of a shooting at an alabama mall packed with black friday shoppers leaves one dead and several others hurt. >> everybody out. >> out now. >> reporter: it was sheer chaos outside a department store at the river chase galleria mall after two people got into a fight that led to gunfire, police say. >> we've got officers on the scene. there has been shots fired. >> reporter: the violence leads to panic. shoppers run for their lives. a 12-year-old girl was hit by a stray bullet but said to be alert and talking while being transported to the hospital. >> we were in there. we were just shopping and we heard six or seven gunshots and

everybody screamed and freaked out. >> reporter: people inside say they immediately looked for any kind of shelter in stockrooms, shops, nearby restaurants. >> they pushed us in supply closets and we sat there for five to ten minutes then they opened the emergency exit door and pushed us outside. >> reporter: one of the two men in the fight was an 18-year-old transported to the hospital in critical condition. the shooter was killed by a nearby officer after a briefcase. -- brief chase. >> one of our hoover officers did engage that individual, shot him and he is dead on the scene. >> it was a scary thing, and i'm glad it's over. >> reporter: now mall officials say even though there is no longer a threat to the community, they are working with police and the shopping center was closed overnight but it is set to re-open at 7:00 a.m. you feel for the families just trying to get a jump on sales after thanksgiving dinner. >> absolutely. adrienne, thank you. black friday will hopefully be much more peaceful for the rest of us. shoppers are hitting the malls across this country and searching out those deals.

more than 164 million american consumers will shop over thanksgiving weekend with the majority planning to make their purchases black friday, according to the national retail association. and abc's victor oquendo has much more on all of that. victor, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. these shoppers wasting no time. we're at the mall in miami opening up its doors at 6:00 a.m. so far so good here. the crowds definitely growing in size. just part of the millions of americans hunting for the best deals on one of the biggest shopping days of the year. it's the super bowl of shopping. overnight, shoppers across the nation clamoring in stores for black friday deals. >> got up, cooked and had that thanksgiving dinner and then headed out to do our shopping like we do every year. >> reporter: according to the national retail federation, more than 164 million u.s. consumers will shop over thanksgiving weekend. a majority making those discounted purchases today. and while many stores saw shoppers lining up for hours, others looked significantly

shorter this year. >> i think that it's due to some of the online sales. >> reporter: according to one poll, 37% of consumers surveyed say they plan to do all or most of their black friday shopping on the web. because of this, some stores are finding today to be less crucial to overall sales. >> we try to spread it out so that it's a lot easier for our customers and they are all trying to shove it all into one day. >> reporter: but about 16% plan to primarily shop in stores. some call it tradition. >> i think it's fun. i rarely get out and about. i work a lot, and so having an afternoon for us to be able to run around, have a good time and just maybe find a few things that we have had on our list. >> reporter: and according to the international council of shopping centers, more americans are coming back to brick and mortar shops this year. but if this isn't for you, if you want to avoid the crowd, there of course, is always cyber monday. that's expected to grow this year too. the holiday shopping season is officially under way, dan. >> it is and you are in the thick of it.

thank you very much, victor. let's get it back over now to the man who so skillfully rhymed spanx, thanks and banks. >> you got to do it, and speaking of all of that giving thanks, this raises a big question here. is it worth it to run out to the stores or can you do just as well online on black friday? becky worley is outside the macy's flagship store here in new york braving the cold and, becky, it doesn't look like the throngs of humanity are lined up to hit the sales quite like they used to be. are we seeing a kinder, gentler black friday now? >> reporter: i think so, whit. i mean, i have been in the stores last night, this morning. they're busy, but no shoving, no big, huge lines. it really is because they started the doorbusters yesterday on thanksgiving and because the online prices are so similar to what we're seeing in store. let me give you an example. a pair of popular ugg boots, 25% off inside of macy's. and 25% off on their website.

really incentivizing people to shop online. >> and so what is the best strategy for deal-hunting today? >> reporter: okay. here are my top tips. number one, think about big ticket items. i went to the nordictrack site, they have 30% off some of their popular treadmills. that's $1,000 in savings. next, shop for things that are rarely discounted. i'm thinking of the apple watch 3 that's $199 at target. apple products don't go on sale very much. then, you want to think about staples. things about, like, not gifts. tools at ace hardware, 25%, 30%, 50% off. and if you're buying an android phone, today is the day. the samsung s9, $200 off. get out there and make smart purchases. >> dan is already putting in his order for a nordictrack. becky worley, thank you so much. let's get over to paula. >> thank you, whit. i prefer to do most of my shopping on the couch. now to the seller who definitely wants you to buy

much more from mar-a-lago right there in florida. tara, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. this striking pronouncement started as a typical thanksgiving message to troops abroad and then quickly devolved into the president's issues at home. overnight, president trump escalating his crackdown on asylum seekers, threatening to shut down the southern border. >> we will close entry into the country for a period of time until we can get it under control. >> the entire border? >> the whole border. i mean, the whole border. >> reporter: even willing to cut off billions of dollars in trade. >> mexico will not be able to sell their cars into the united states where they make so many cars at great benefit to them, not at great benefit to us, by the way. >> reporter: while nearly 6,000 troops celebrated thanksgiving in tents along the border, trump ramping up the defense saying he'll allow the troops to use deadly force if the wave of asylum seekers overwhelms customs and border protection personnel. >> if they have to they're going to use lethal force. i've given the okay. if they have to. i hope they don't have to.

but, you know, you're dealing with a minimum of 500 serious criminals. >> reporter: still, defense secretary james mattis says it's more likely that troops could use plastic shields and batons to provide crowd control. this comes as the president continues to lash out at chief justice john roberts for defending a ninth circuit court judge's decision to temporarily block his asylum ban. roberts said in a rare statement, quote, independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for. trump firing back in a tweet. quote, justice roberts can say what he wants, but the ninth circuit is a complete and total disaster. judges must not legislate security and safety at the border, or anywhere else. the immigration battle will continue to take center stage as the congress tries to strike a budget deal. president trump has threatened to shut down the government if his border wall isn't a part of the package. dan? >> tara palmeri right there in florida, thank you. whit, over to you. dan, now to that record cold blasting the northeast and the

new storm threatening the midwest that might cause a bit of a holiday travel nightmare. ginger is tracking it all. ginger, good morning. >> good morning. 15, the temperature right where i'm standing and that is even colder than yesterday morning. rochester, burlington and buffalo all ended up with their coldest thanksgivings on record, new york city, second coldest on record. so let's see the numbers here. it's not just along the coast but look at burlington, these are actual air temperatures. it's only 9, 17 in portland, 13 in syracuse, 21 in buffalo. we didn't even have to use windchill this morning, and then our attention turns to an icy mix for virginia, west virginia and this could impact travel big time on i-80, 94 through chicago, right there through indianapolis. that's sunday afternoon and sunday night. if you have a flight out of detroit or cleveland those are the areas to watch for a couple of inches of snow that could make roads a huge mess as everybody tries to get back home. whit. >> all right, ginger, thanks so much. my family is visiting from california and they're like, what have you done? temperatures in the teens.

>> at least they're going back to warmer weather. >> i think so, very soon. let's move on now to the new details that we're learning about the last days of that american missionary who was murdered on a remote indian island, the 26-year-old dying at the hands of natives who were armed with bows and arrows and authorities are trying to determine if there is a way to recover his body. abc's linsey davis is here with more. linsey, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, paula. it is illegal to go within five nautical miles of this island because the natives are known for aggressive behavior against outsiders. john chau, an american missionary, told friends he was drawn there to spread the word of god. this morning, new details are emerging about the final days of john chau, the american missionary believed to have been killed by an endangered tribe on a remote island in the indian ocean. in a journal given to "the washington post" by his mother, the 26-year-old who traveled the world preaching christianity and documenting his travels on

instagram wrote about illegally making contact with the sentinelese, a small indigenous tribe that has resisted contact with the rest of the world. in that diary he talks about trying to engage with the tribe, offering them gifts while singing worship songs but the initial contact didn't go well. i'm scared, he writes. watching the sunset and it's beautiful, wondering if it will be the last sunset i see. lord, is this island satan's last stronghold where none have heard or even had the chance to hear your name? chau reportedly left the 13-page journal with the fishermen he allegedly paid to take him to the island. those fishermen were arrested for helping chau get to the isle. -- island. contact with the tribe is illegal. even after the 2004 tsunami a member of the tribe was photographed on the beach firing arrows at a helicopter sent to check on their well-being. >> the diver was to befriend them and brought gives to them but unfortunately as we now know that didn't happen. >> reporter: in his last journal entries he appears to struggle

with whether to abandon his quest to convert the sentinelese. i think i could be more useful alive, but to you, god, i give all the glory of whatever happens. forgive any of the people on this island who try to kill me, especially if they succeed. despite his apprehension, he did return to the island and was never seen alive again. fishermen say they saw his body being dragged and buried. local authorities believe he was killed with a bow and arrow. >> contact with this tribe, as you mentioned in the piece, it's illegal but for good reason, right? >> exactly. they don't have the immune system to be able to basically survive potentially the kind of diseases that outsiders might bring. >> they've had unfortunate encounters with the outside world before and have reason for hostility. >> yes. >> linsey, thank you, appreciate it. well, it is a battle at the box office on this holiday weekend. "variety" reporting that "ralph" earned $18.5 million in its first full day of release, so it could potentially beat out "frozen," the current titleholder. i know "frozen" is a better theme for you right now, whit, but you when have kids at home

defense with this tweet, we all have to lip-sync on this parade because the floats don't have the capacity to handle the sound requirements for a live performance. if you come to my shows, the vocals are 100% live. ora thanked m and assured her fans that her shows are also 100% live. >> it's interesting, but it's an explanation. we're not lip-syncing by the way this morning. >> no, for better or worse. one more news item i want to tell you about from overnight, this one a lot less pleasant. frightening bus crash carrying the university of washington marching band. the bus rolled over on its side on an icy interstate. at least 20 people were streeted for minor injuries, minor injuries, but students were transported to a local town center and one tweeted thanks to the first responders and everyone who brought food and the first responders who got there so quickly and took care of us and the human race on thanksgiving for giving us some spirit back. so very cool. >> very cool. so the community just had their back. >> stepping up. we want to turn to the hunt for someone who dropped a slab for someone who dropped a slab of concrete from a highway overpass. it killed a tennessee man who was on his way to work.

a horrifying crime. it has devastated his family. police are now scouring surveillance tape for clues, and abc's alex perez joins us with more. alex, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, paula. joe shelton's family says he was a hard-working man who always put family first. as you mentioned, he was on his way to work, his usual route, when the unthinkable happened. 54-year-old joe shelton's family said he took this same route to work every morning for 28 years but on tuesday morning he didn't make it. >> i also want justice for him, for our family. he was a loving and kind soul that didn't deserve anything like this. >> reporter: his family now demanding answers after he was killed by what they are describing as a random act of violence. >> you should be able to drive to work and not fear for your life. you shouldn't have to worry about someone throwing a piece of concrete over a bypass and taking your life away from you. >> reporter: it was just before

5:00 a.m. on i-24 near downtown nashville when, according to authorities, someone tossed the concrete from the overpass. the rock smashing right through shelton's windshield. his car careening into a pickup truck and then a guardrail before finally coming to a stop. >> he was a great person all around and a joy to everyone who came to him. losing him is losing the foundation of our family. >> reporter: forensic investigators are now closely examining that concrete. authorities believe it was intentionally tossed. it does not match the concrete on the overpass. and shelton's family says he was looking forward to retiring soon. they are pleading with any motorist who may have seen anything suspicious on that morning to call police. paula. >> our hearts go out to their family, thank you for your reporting this morning. whit. now to that miraculous survival story, the american tourist holding on for his life for 12 hours, clinging to his capsized boat in shark-infested

waters. abc's t.j. holmes is here with more. t.j., good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. it's a terrifying thing if your boat capsizes in open waters of course, but this man can take some comfort in knowing he had this emergency beacon. once he activated that thing the helicopter was there in 20 minutes. problem is, why did he wait 12 hours to activate it? you're watching the moment a stranded sailor was plucked from sea. levi verhoest had to wait 12 hours alone in the dark in shark-infested waters for this help to finally come. the 29-year-old american was rescued off the australian coast after his small boat capsized. >> noticed the boat slowing down and there was a hatch cover missing allowing water to flow in, and by the time i was able to get out of the cabin, the hull was already full of water and the boat just went -- capsized. >> reporter: he was uninjured and calm after spending part of the night on the hull of his

capsized boat and other parts in his dingy. he eventually activated his epirb to signal for help. he wasn't able to do it immediately because it was too dark and he first wanted to try handling things himself. >> i was hoping i could make an attempt to right the boat, but that was just a waste of my time. if i didn't have epirb i would still be drifting out there. >> reporter: a rescue helicopter arrived minutes after his distress signal and lowered a crewman. to retrieve him. rescuers say radio beacon devices are vital for any boater. >> i mean it's going to take weeks before someone finds a boat. >> reporter: even these difficult hours won't stop this experienced sailor from getting back on the water. >> no, i still love sailing. i want to go back. if i can retrieve the boat i'd love to. >> he had been out there floating around if you will for three years island hopping and all of his stuff was on that boat. he had been living there so he lost everything, but again, your

your home. >> an operable detector. that's the only thing. >> reporter: all right. let's go. once inside, we make sure homeowners have those detecters and that they are working properly. >> it's working. >> reporter: wanda has a detector plugged into her wall but when the fire chief tests it, it doesn't work. carbon monoxide detectors should be tested once a week and the install dates often written on the back should not be older than seven to ten years. we look for a date on wanda's and can't find one. >> let's get rid of it. >> reporter: kidde giving her two brand new ones, one for each level of her home. down in cindy's basement, he shows us the source of many co leaks, appliances that burn fuel like the furnace, boiler or hot water heater. what we find, cracks in the cron crete and two holes covered up with worn out duct tape. >> these could be a potential danger? >> absolutely. >> reporter: steve says if this furnace ever malfunctions, this

is where the carbon monoxide could easily spill out. >> i bet you had no idea. >> do you know how often you get this inspected? >> never. >> but now you will. >> now we will. >> reporter: finally, we found a home that had no issues to show you some things you can do yourself. he says one way the deadly gas can pump into your home, blocked chimneys. your flue gas and carbon monoxide are going up and out of the chimney and potentially it'll go back into the living space and then if you don't have your co detectors in all you got a problem here. >> reporter: to check for blockages a simple match test above your hot water heater. a flame that's pulling towards the flue, the opening in the chimney, a sign it's clear of any blockage. when you blow out the match the smoke should also go up into the flue. but -- >> you put that match near that and it instantly blew that out, there's a potential for blockage in that chimney. >> wow. >> reporter: another test, if you are able to see it, the color of the flame on your furnace.

i wonder how you turn it off. >> may the force be with you. all right, we do want to move on to our "gma" cover story and recently met an inspiring young doctor facing a life-changing diagnosis of lou gehrig's disease and given him one year to live and that's not stopped him to find a cure for als to help others. he is a scientist in a race against time. >> i feel like the work that he is doing is a very big deal. >> reporter: a leader in the research of als, lou gehrig's disease which kills off nerve cells that make it possible for us to breathe, talk, move and live. >> he's discovering new jeans that cause als. it will change how we're able to diagnose patients. >> reporter: his research may also lead it a cure and even bigger deal to him because he himself has als, diagnosed just last year. he's been given a year to live.

the news shocking to him and his wife maya also a doctor. they're raising two boy, ages 2 and 4. how baffling is it that he got this? >> it's baffling that he was studies it and he got it and that's just ironic. >> no genetic predisposition. great health. and he was quite young. >> yep. so, yep, for all of those reasons, there was no reason to suspect als. >> reporter: 18 months after his diagnosis, he can no longer speak. he can only slightly tilt his head and barely squeeze one hand. >> he uses his mouth to focus in on the spot and then he uses the clicker to actually click it. >> reporter: he communicates with the help of a computer with a special headset that moves the cursor on the green. >> the text to speech device is able to convert the text to speech. >> because of this lengthy process we submitted some of our questions in advance. his message is urgent.

>> i want to get the word out that als can happen to anyone. we need to come together as a society and tack als head on like we have done for heart disease and cancer. >> reporter: he says his fellow doctors need to rethink their strategy because people with these diseases suffer beyond belief. >> i felt like i was being given a death sentence and there was nothing whatsoever that anyone could do to stop this. >> reporter: but he isn't wasting one moment despite his condition. he works every day countless hours on his computer researching, tackling this disease's biggest questions. >> why does it progress slower in people like stephen hawking and faster in people like me? >> these young scientists from his lab are trying to find those answers. they're meeting at his home inspired to conquer the disease with and for him. >> he combines his genetic studies with strong statistical methods and also imaging to achieve goals that, you know,

like we ate yesterday. >> cranberry sauce, a cup and a half. >> i'll hold some back. fold the dough over. a basic pie dough like you would use for an apple or pumpkin pie and then a little egg wash on the outside. that will make it nice and golden and glossy. >> we can eat it, right? we can try it. >> dinner in pie form. >> you're good. that was so easy. >> this one my kids would love. anything with a tortilla win. if you hide stuff in there. how do we do it? >> start with a tortilla and want flour, not corn because it's nice and soft and pliable. brie cheese because it will spread as it cooks and don't want it oozing out as it cooks. >> that is soft cheese. >> leftever turkey and i'll shred this up, super simple. keep it in the middle to one side. >> just a few ingredients and, of course, dijon. >> see, i wasn't expecting that part. >> a little pop.
