homeland security spoke out detailing the threat posed by these migrants as president trump issued a new warning saying some of those images of adults with children at the border are not what they seem. abc's lana zak has new details. >> reporter: good morning to you, kendis and janai. there is concern it could spell to 9,000 and there's the possibility of more violent clashes. president trump campaigning in mississippi disputed the impact of tear gas on migrant children. >> well, i do say why are they there xi mean i have to start off -- first of all, the tear gas is a minor form of the tear gas itself. it's very safe. these are people that call them grabbers. they grab a child because they think they'll have a certain -- they're going to have a certain status by having a child. >> reporter: secretary of homeland security kirstjen nielsen says they're mostly men and the limited number of women and children in the caravan are being used by the organizers as

human shields putting vulnerable people in harm's way and the administration says there were 1,000 migrants who attempted to cross. 8500 migrants camped in tijuana, 600 convicted criminals but there are undoubtedly some children in the crowd. this migrant traveling with her 2-year-old son came from honduras and responding to the humanitarian crisis garrett robinson brought children's books. >> regardless of your political belief, whether you think people should go to the states or not, through asylum or any other way, people need help. so i brought some children's books in spanish. >> reporter: after sunday's clash between u.s. border patrol and the migrant, abc's matt gutman met with one man who said his injuries would not deter him. >> one thing he says is he's not going to stop. he wants to still get into the united states. he's not going to quit now just because he was wounded. >> reporter: and it could take months to process all these

asylum claims and secretary nielsen also said historically less than 10% of these claims are ever approved. kendis, janai. >> our thanks to lana zak there in washington. let's turn to the big twist in the washington investigation. the special counsel robert mueller says former trump campaign chairman paul manafort has violated the terms of his plea deal by lying to investigators. this comes just as another key figure in the case rejects a plea deal. this morning, paul manafort is no longer a key government witness. special counsel robert mueller claims that manafort who pleaded guilty in september to conspiracy in connection with the investigation is now in breach of that plea deal. a court filing says manafort, president trump's former campaign chairman, committed federal crimes by lying to the fbi and the special counsel's office after he started cooperating in the russia probe. manafort is accused of lying on a variety of subjects according to abc's pierre thomas. >> the government says his

plea remains in intact but will no longer recommend a reduction in sentence. manafort's attorney says he met with the government on numerous occasions and believes he provided truthful information. >> reporter: still not clear what impact it will have on the investigation but mueller was hoping manafort might be able to provide more critical details in his ongoing investigation into russia interference and some legal experts are already wondering whether manafort is now holding out for a presidential pardon. meanwhile, another subject of the special counsel's investigation has rejected a plea deal. jerome corsi a conservative writer and associate of former trump campaign adviser roger stone says prosecutors wanted him to plead guilty to lying to fbi agents when he was questioned about communications with wikileaks. corsi says he briefly forgot about an email exchange with stone but says he did not intentionally lie and says to confess that he did would be the real crime. >> if i have to go to jail for the rest of my life, i will not tell a lie to a federal judge or anybody else. if they want to send me to

prison for the rest of my life, so be it, have at it, but they will not get me to commit a crime. >> there's a third key figure who's not cooperating with the mueller probe. the former campaign chairman george papadopoulos is serving a two-week prison sentence for lying about his contact with russians during the campaign. switching gears now, ukraine is taking new steps to defend itself after a russian naval attack in the black sea. it's now imposed martial law in areas that border russia. ukrainian officials claim there is intelligence that says russia may stage a ground attack and u.s. is calling the capture of three ukrainian ships outrageous is calling for russia to release the ships' crew themes. overnight growing outrage over the policing shooting of a black man in alabama. protesters blocked a state highway last night near the shopping mall where e.j. bradford was killed on thanksgiving. now, police say they mistook him for a shooting suspect and the mayor is calling for patience. the mall gunman is still on the loose.

new fallout this morning after a chinese scientist claimed to have produced the world's first genetically edited babies. rice university in houston is now investigating one of its professors for his alleged ties to the controversial experiment which manipulated the dna of twins in china to make them resistant to hiv. dr. michael dean is a bioengineering professor. rice says it was not aware of his work which violates the school's ethical norms. in arizona newly released video shows a border patrol agent announcing the gender of his child. you can see it there. blue initially. authorities say the explosion that emitted the blue smoke ignited this. that wildfire forcing more than 100 people to evacuate their homes. the agent has been sentenced to probation and has to pay $8 million in damages, but he has a new son. time now for a look at your weather for this tuesday morning.

good morning. well, the big story is the snowy conditions we're expecting to hammer the northeast. this slow-moving sluggish low pressure system will create opportunities for snow throughout northern new york, vermont, new hampshire and maine, so much so, get this, we're talking about 6 to 12 inches of snow in some areas throughout vermont, new hampshire going into maine and even over here close to buffalo, as well. then for the northwest brace for stormy conditions in the northwest leaning into snow as you move a little bit further inland. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. coming up, the ultimate tribute to hugh hefner. but first a new clue that beto o'rourke may be running for president after all. and also ahead, a woman who needs a heart transplant is rejected. her insurance company says first she needs to raise $10,000. we'll see how she responded. and later, why melania trump's christmas

we're back with new images of nasa's martian probe landing on the red planet after six months of traveling through space. it successfully decelerated from 12,000 miles an hour to 5 miles an hour for a smooth landing, and look at this, new images overnight. and this is happy hour at the control room, cheers, hugs, choreographed handshakes and a very special coordinated one. the probe will collect data on the interior of mars. those guys are still partying. dr. christine blasey ford says she and her family have faced immeasurable stress since she accused supreme court justice brett kavanaugh of sexual assault. in a new statement blasey ford thanks her supporters.

she's now shut down a gofundme page that collected nearly $650,000. she's says that money has been spent on security for her family and anything left over will be donated to help support survivors of trauma. texas congressman beto o'rourke is no longer ruling out a run for president in 2020. he gained national attention for his failed attempt to unseat senator ted cruz. o'rourke previously said he would not be seeking the white house, but now as he prepares to leave congress, he says he and his wife will think about what's next. well, the next time you see romaine lettuce in the store, go ahead, buy it. the fda says the romaine linked to the recent e. coli outbreak came from central california. but the growing season there has now ended, so the incoming supply of romaine will come from other regions and should be safe to eat. officials recommend checking the label just to be certain. president trump says he plans to go ahead with raising tariffs on china, and a 10% tariff could apply to apple's iphone. the president tells

"the wall street journal" it's highly unlikely that he'll accept china's request to delay the tariffs. he meets with china's president this weekend and the iphone is made in china. apple's stock dropped more than 2% overnight. "playboy" magazine founder hugh hefner's legacy is on display and on sale this week. some of his prized possessions are up for auction. for a starting bid of $20,000, you can be in the running for a complete collection of "playboy" magazines. for 400 bucks you can bid on a set of his silk pajamas. the auction starts on friday. >> so many things to choose from. >> so little time. well, coming up, the big changes at general motors. what's behind the new job cuts. also, we hear from this hang glider who was desperately trying to hang on for his life. the mistake his pilot made. and one family's legal battle to light up their house for christmas. even santa has been called to testify.

>> market conditions require that five north american assembly and propulsion plants will be unallocated product by the end of 2019. >> reporter: those cuts will wipe out nearly 15% of the company's workforce with five plants slated to shut down by the end of the year including those in detroit, near baltimore and in ohio. >> they are not closing our damn plant without one hell of a fight. >> reporter: the company is citing a changing marketplace. 65% of all sales are now suvs and trucks compared to 50% just five years ago. as a result the company will stop production of six sedans by the end of the year including the chevy cruze, chevy impala and the volt. >> i expressed the fact that i am not happy. >> reporter: the president is expressing his frustration with gm's ceo in the wake of the decision and insisting tariffs are not to blame. >> no, not tariffs, that has nothing to do with tariffs. she said the car was not

selling. >> reporter: still politicians are pointing fingers. one ohio democrat accuses president trump of making empty promises after he guaranteed more jobs during a rally in ohio just last year. >> we're going to get those values up. we're going to get those jobs coming back, and we're going to fill up those factories or rip them down and build brand-new ones. >> gm says it will keep several plants in ohio open and some laid off workers can get jobs elsewhere. the company says tariffs are not to blame for the cuts but it says the president's trade policies have cost gm more than a billion dollars. a michigan woman may learn today if she's now eligible for a new heart. hedda martin was rejected after the hospital decided she couldn't afford the anti-rejection drugs. in a november 20th letter, the hospital committee recommended that she try raising $10,000. martin raised more than $29,000 online including $10,000 from a donor who wants to remain anonymous. >> wow. well, a florida man is sharing the story of his vacation nightmare.
