north bay. the rain will start tapering as it heads south 4:00, upper 50s. scattered showers this evening, 56 to about 59 degrees. it's not even raining yet and it sounds like alexis is tracking some issues. >> yeah, unfortunately we're off to a busy start here. i want to start you off in the emeryville area. westbound 580 at the 80 split. folks coming from oakland trying to get to the bay bridge, we have a four-vehicle collision. still working on what lanes are blocked. one is but that's better than it was 20 minutes ago when they were holding all traffic. no one was able to get by. we'll take a look at the backup on westbound 580. you're heavy from 24. we also already have some heavy traffic in the tracy area. we'll take a look at that coming up next. three american soldiers are dead. three others are hurt after a

roadside bombing in afghanistan. the military says an ied detonated in the ghazni province. an american contractor was also injured in the blast. we do not know the names of the victims yet. so far, no immediate claim of responsibility. of course, we'll stay on top of this breaking news and bring you this breaking news and bring you more as it comes in. producing a beer to benefit survivors of the camp fire. >> production starts today but you have to wait a little while to get a pint. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in alameda with details. >> reporter: good morning. we're asking you to drink some beer for a good cause. we're in front of the almanac brewing company. here's a look at some of the other breweries participating. they'll call the beer resilience ipa. they'll donate money raised from sales to the communities devastated by the camp fire. some breweries from as far away

roads. the first rain of the season fell over the thanksgiving holiday. the chp says officers responded to 29 crashes in marin. that's more than triple the number of crashes the same time last year. and ahead of this storm, many drivers are stopping at goodman's building supply off highway 101 to buy tarps, rain boots and jackets. we spoke with an employee who wants people to slow down on the roads. >> we were in the slow lane going 45, 50, people were still going 75, 80, like they didn't care. my main concern is that we don't get into a car accident. >> you can stay on top of the weather with our abc7 news app. >> on our app you can see live doppler 7 and live web cams from across the bay area. tracking that storm, here's mike. >> let's get you an idea of neighborhood temperatures and we'll get to how it will affect your day. it's milder in san francisco. 52 to 55 deges our spread. we'll see if that concurs

everywhere else. it's definitely milder. a lot of mid to upper 40s on the bay. belmont at 53, one of the warm spots. pittsburg at 50. petaluma, 51 degrees. here's a look at some fog rolling across san francisco this morning. out and about you'll need the umbrella. at the beach, high surf advisory starts at 10:00 this morning. if you're headed to the mountains, snow levels up to 64,000 feet. east bay, 8:00, still pretty cloudy. so:00, pretty cloudy. by noon, the rain starts to roll in and it stays steady through 4:00 turning over to showers between 6:00, 7:00, 8:00. for the north bay, we're quiet until we get to about 7:00 to 8:00 and then the rain rolls in. it stays steady through 2:00 and becomes showers by 4:00. look at your temperatures, they never leave the 50s. for the peninsula, we're dry from 8:00 to 10:00. by noon, scattered showers develop and steadier rain from

2:00 to 4:00. we'll top out at 60 degrees. showers become scattered starting at 6:00 and we'll drop down into the upper 50s. we'll take a look at the storm impact scale. when you're going to be driving on wet roads coming up. here's alexis with a look at this morning's commute. >> good morning, mike. we do have plenty to talk about already here today. taking you back to emeryville. you can see the flashing lights. we have a four-car aswestbound . good news is tow trucks are on the scene. we have at least one lane blocked adding a ten-minute delay coming from about highway 24. we're keeping an eye on that. i'm hoping they'll get a few more lanes cleared. we have a full closure of san pablo avenue between road 20 and el portal. that's the end of a police pursuit that resulted in a crash. we're working on more information but we have a crew on the way to the scene and already heavy around the tracy area. roadwork slowing you down on

here's a look at what to expect out of today's storm. light to moderate rain. especially moderate in the north bay where you'll get up to half an inch. it will be lighter as you head to the south bay. we have dangerous surf from the coast lingering through friday when more storms are on the way. as i said, it's been seven longince wentffnd two leaders died and that chaos has captured the city again. >> today marks 40 years since a

former board of supervisors member assassinated mayor moscone any and supervisor harvey milk. city leaders will gather on this 40th anniversary for a commemorative event at city hall today. mayor london breed and supervisor mandelman are expected to handy. in the north bay, a senior center is burned and charred. six elderly people lived here and they are alive, thanks to a quick-thinking boy and his mom. 10-year-old carlos says fire broke out in the kitchen sunday night. he calmly called 911 and gave the fire department the address while his mom evacuated six he would early people living in the building. fire officials say the boy's call made all the difference. nw the healdsburg city council is looking at giving him a

>> reporter: down the street pastor eugene jackson was shocked to see swastikas spray painted on the side of its church holy god, which just opened its doors last week. >> to see these symbols of hatred on our building were disheartening. >> reporter: police say 20 buildings in downtown antioch was tagged, including city hall, where a vandal was caught on security camera spray painting a van in the parking lot. antioch police releasing these surveillance pictures of a possible suspect captured in the downtown area late sunday and early monday. this mural on fourth street was being cleaned and repaired. it, too, was littered with swastikas and vulgarities. >> nothing like this ever happens in this community. to see swastikas and things of that nature painted on murals is disheartening. >> reporter: police have no motive for the crime. >> you're sad that someone has that much hatred in their heart.

>> reporter: they believe they do not reflect their community. so far no arrests. for now, police are not calling this a hate crime. their investigation continues. in antioch, abc7 news. in antioch, abc7 news. san francisco is launching a new campaign about cannabis use. >> it's aimed toward middle and high school students. thy want them to know smoking weed can damage lungs like smoking cigarettes and edibles can contain more thc. a recent survey found out one-fifth of high school seniors in san francisco have used cannabis in the past month. we have new developments in the controversial claim that the world's first genetically edited human babies were created in china. an american scientist may have played a role. rice university in texas says it's launched an investigation into one of its biochemical and genetic engineering professors

after reports surfaced he is connected to those babies. gene editing is banned in the u.s. the chinese researcher behind the experiment also studied at rice and stanford universities before returning to his homeland. he said he used a controversy again-editing technology altering the girls, supposedly giving them the ability to resist hiv infection. he's expected to present his findings in hong kong tomorrow. in the north bay, smart train service changes are on hold because two trains are damaged. they were made in japan and assembled in illinois. they were damaged before arci g arriving in the north bay last month. one won't be replaced until spring, one won't be available until next summer. the new rail cars cost 11 million bucks. two bald eagles ended up stuck in a tree after their

tallons got locked together. an eagle expert was the one who freed those eagles from each other. that expert believes the two birds may have gotten tangled up during a territorial dispute or because it's mating season. the annual santa con gathering in san francisco could still be happening despite the city giving them a permit. >> city parks and rec square cannot hold all those people who want to turn out. the official event was scheduled for december 8th, but it still may not deter people from donning their santa outfits. >> you can't stop santa. >> santa con, going to santa con. >> good for them. have fun. don't get arrested. take a look at what's going on

outside. we have umbrella weather back. san jose the last to receive some rain. it will be after the lunch hour when you start to get the steady rain. right now you're cloudy and 54 degrees. fog this morning before the light to moderate rain arrives. a chance of rain not only today but just about every day through saturday. did we mention the storm doors open? coolest in it is north bay, mid to upper 50s. the rest around 59 in richmond to 64 in san jose. tonight we'll have some mid to upper 40s in the deepest north bay valleys. the rest of us in the low to mid-50s with steady rain becoming scattered showers. the storm has slowed down. it's going to stay in the north bay starting at 9:00 up until the lunch hour. that doesn't mean there won't be scattered lighter showers out ahead of it. this is the steady light green to moderate yellow rain. it moves into the heart of the bay and it's all over us during the evening commute at 4:00 to 7:00. notice it tapers from green --

from yellow back to green to light. notice it's not a solid shield anymore. it's scattered showers. that will be the case during the overnight hours also. let's see how much rain and when it gets to your neighborhood. 7:00, everybody's dry. 9:00, everybody's dry. noon it's going to be wet up in the north bay. 4:00, all of us will be wet. 7:00, even isolated areas in the south bay will be wet. the evening commute will be much trickier and wetter. tomorrow night into thursday heavier showers, thunderstorms possible. the storm is a 2. then 1 for friday night into saturday. even though we have dry roads we're seeing a lot of collision. four-car collision at the split at at emeryville. the left lane is getting by.

where waves are already 9 feet on the way to 16. fog is a big issue in the east bay valleys and north bay valleys. livermore and santa rosa, less than a quarter mile. arriving in the north bay at 7:00 and then we'll hit the 60-degree mark at noon with light to moderate rain. lighter at 4:00. upper 50s and showers this evening, mid-50s. plenty to talk about in the traffic center. still trying to clear this crash that happened at about 4:22 this morning. four vehicles involved in a collision on westbound 580 just before you get to the 80 politic in emeryville. you can see a tow truck is hooking up, i believe, the last vehicle that was involved in this right now. a couple chp cruisers there on the scene as well. hopefully we'll get this cleared. right now we have at least one lane blocked and that's adding ten minutes to your drive. some other routes around there not looking too bad. westbound 80, highway 4 to the maze, 17 minutes. we heard the metering lights

were turned on. southbound 101, san francisco to sfo, in the green, ten minutes. today's storm isn't just bringing rain. it's bringing a high surf advisory to the entire bay area coastline. >> waves could reach up to 25 feet high. abc7 news reporter matt keller is live in pacifica. hi, matt. how's the beach? >> reporter: hi, jessica. not much of a beach here. the water is coming up to beach boulevard right now. we've seen some waves out here 8 to 10 feet high. so, it is big. scraping along the bottom of the pacifica pier. high surf advisory goes into effect at 10:00 and lasts until early friday morning. you can see waves with 18 to 24 feet with some waves exceeding 25 feet. surfers will love this. many of the best in the world are in maui for the big wave tour where the jaws challenge is taking place. 35 to 50-foot surf yesterday. eventually organizers put the

event on hold because of dangerous surf conditions. they're expected to be back on the water today. that big swell is comingy. t we're told mavericks officials are monitoring the conditions in half moon bay. for folks like me, you have to be careful. expect the water to crash up into the a new video shows a car fire in san francisco. you can see cars flying past the flames as crews worked to put this out. this was near the embarcadero. it's not clear what started it. this morning president trump is defending the use of tear gas on migrants at the u.s./mexico border despite concern children were exposed to it. >> agents fired tear gas at some central american migrants who tried to breach the border in tijuana on sunday. president trump responded by saying the tear gas is a very minor form of the tear gas

itself and that it's very safe. secretary of homeland -- excuse me. secretary of homeland security kirstjen nielsen released a statement saying the caravan members are mostly men and the limited number of women and children in the caravan are being used by the organize ergz as human shields. bay area activists are headed to texas with supplies. they will be given to migrants asking for asylum in the u.s. the supplies were collected by bay area border relief and crisis response team from the university of san francisco. new developments in the case of an oakland couple deported to mexico last year. the wife, maria mendoza sanchez, has a chance to return to the u.s. and reunite with her children. buzzfeed reports she'll go to the u.s. embassy in mexico city on monday. her application for a six-year work permit under h1b was

fire with an armed felon were nothing short of heroic. police took 31-year-old mario manuel caballero into custody after a standoff that lasted hours. chief garcia said three officers responded to a man with a gun were met with gunfire. garcia says one of the officers bravely stood his ground and returned fire with the patrol rifle. tactical officers used tear gas to force the suspect out of the home. he suffered a gunshot wound and dog bite from k-9 unit sent in to detain him. health officials say it's okay to eat romain lettuce but you need to check the label. the fda says it appears the contaminated lettuce is now off the market. inspectors narrow the source to lettuce grown in central and northern california. effective immediately, lettuce growers will begin to label the region where their produce is grown and when it was harvested. officials advise that if your

half moon bay, 48. everybody else in the low to mid-50s. you saw san mateo warming from 53 to 54 as that rush much moist air is coming in. it's keeping us in the mid-40s in napa. the rest of us in the upper 40s to low 50s. milder this morning. dry right now. mother nature giving us a break as she is slowing the system down. it looks like almost the entire morning commute will be dry outside of some pockets up in the north bay. the evening commute will be wet. mass transit, have your umbrella and shelter inside the ferry. south bay, next 12 hours, it's dry through noon. after noon the scattered showers come in with steadier rain from 4:00 to 6:00. east bay valley, we're dry until 10:00 and scattered showers at noon. steady rain at 2:00. a little lighter at 4:00. scattered showers this en we t out at 60 but drop into evg hours. in san francisco, we're in the

on car break-enginins. police say they are down 16%, but it's still an issue that's sometimes tough to prosecute. under the current law the da has to prove the break-in happened, that the door was locked whether it happened. state senator scott weiner is introducing a bill to close the loophole. >> there are cases where police arrest someone, the district attorney charges someone, they bring it to court and the case gets dismissed because no one can testify that the door was locked. >> we met one woman whose son-in-law's truck was broken in. they found a note saying, was walking by your car. saw it was broken into. sorry that happened. covered your open window with plastic since it's due to rain tonight. the new bill will be introduced on monday. whoever wrote that note should
