often the case when weather is like this at the airport. >> here's a live look at traffic on the san mateo bridge. it is a little messy and certainly a little slow. good evening, i'm kristen sze. >> i'm dan eyhlas. joining us. there is one big traffic problem to talk about. >> highway 101, south of the cam stick park area. a large hole opened up in the far right lane and cal trans crews are repairing it right now. >> the clchhp says there's no estimated time to reopen the roadway. you can see how big the hole is as crews work to patch t trafic is a mess and the afternoon rain could make things even worse. >> that is a tough job. here's a live look at traffic in the area from our drive time traffic map. you can see the red indicator very show. orange, slightly delayed as well. the other direction, abc 7 meteorologist sandhya patel is here with more. >> it's not an easy, breezy drive. look at live doppler 7. we have rain coming through the

bay area. it's very light across the east bay. san leandro, san lorenzo into castro valley, macarthur boulevard in oakland, fremont, warm springs road into 880. the peninsula. from redwood city to half moon bay getting light ersh santa cruz mountains picking up sprinkles. look for scattered to sniweght,ho about 7:00 p.m.e. we have a high surf advisory until 4:00 a.m. frid c.aying in well. already we're seeing the surf building 10 to 15 feet right breakers can bew. 18 to 24 feet. watch out if you're going to be along the coast. it is pretty dangerous out there. dan? >> rescue crews hit the beach to warn visitors about a dangerous threat from the storm. a high surf advisory was in effect along ocean beach where

powerful waves crashed on to the shore. taking time to warn beach-goers about the danger of being swept away by the riptides. >> if that gets ahold of you, that pulls you out into the ocean. also, of course, the current, you've got about three to four different current that occur out here at ocean beach at any given time. you can be pulled left or right, depending the forces that are out there. >> surfers are being told to stay out of the water while the advisory is in effect. >> chain controls are no longer in effect between king vail and donder lake. bay area skiers are excited despite how tough it is to get there. jobina fortson has more on that. >> reporter: hello. we're stoked for the snow. cau yon ?llte i am dressed to shred. gnarly. does anybody say tubular

anymore. either way, everyone is pretty excited in here. we're buckled up and ready to ride. down the mountain, fresh powder is rolling into the sierra and it's looking like it may stick around for a while. >> when you get ski season kicking off, winter off and it's christmastime -- >> you got a busy store of people itching to hit the slopes. it's been a long wait. >> last year was brutal. i think it wasn't until march where we actually even got snow. we're excited to see it this early. >> it was challenging. resorts were barely opening up, 200, 300, 400 acres, which is about two or three runs per resort. >> the service in tahoe wasn't great. but we could make out coop cooper's snow dance. >> it's the snow dances. >> see? >> with the system set to last through the weekend, the bases are building up in the sierra and the deficit from a dry october and november is expected

allow the city of oakland to evict them. the encampment is on edes avenue and clara street. carlos saucedo is taking us inside. >> reporter: they say the space is a haven for women who would otherwise be living on the streets. >> me and my daughters live in our camper. every night that we were actually parked on the streets, we weren't getting pushed around by the police -- were getting pushed around by the police. men were trying to break into our camper. >> nita b has had her camper parked inside for a month. she says it's a clean and sober alternative for women like her. >> we have a unique set of circumstances when we're homeless. particularly with predators. there's not a single woman i've met in this work that i've done around homelessness for, you know -- that i haven't met a woman who hasn't been raped. >> there's a community garden

and to-do list to keep things clean. >> we're trying to show a way for the community to come together and build together. >> 13 women and their families live in the space set up as a tiny village with an interfaith tent and a donation center. the gate keeps out people who shouldn't be there. the city argues those inside are trespassing. some residents agree. >> i've been living here ten years. it ain't fair to me or the rest of the neighbors. how are they going to move in and take over? >> the women say not all of them qualify for shelters. for example, some have pets or jobs that make it difficult to follow shelter curfews. a judge is stepping in to settle the dispute. but if things don't go their way -- >> it's going to mean we're back on the streets and dealing with predators. that's what it means. >> it could be a matter of time before the haven is no more. in east oakland, carlos saucedo, abc 7 news. san francisco giants co-owner charles johnson is asking a controversial senate candidate from mississippi to

return his campaign contribution. johnson and his wife each donated $2700 to cindy hyde-smith. she's made several statements many viewed as racist. news of the johnson's donation has drawn backlash, including people calling for a boycott of all giants' games and events. an arrest has been made in the string of hate graffiti in antioch. police department released this picture of the suspect. 24-year-old lawrence phipps. evidence inside his home linked him to the crime. this is a story we first told you about yesterday on abc 7 news. anti-semitic graffiti on several churches and about 20 buildings in downtown antioch were vandalized as well. a marijuana deal that went wrong led to a nearly naked man pleading in a parking lot. seth will den and misty love

chio. went to bioowe they made the man strip to his underwear and tried to kidnap him at gunpoint. the victim jumped into a slow-moving car and the driver took him to a target where he yelled for people to call the police. detectives are still looking for others involved in this strange drug deal. a bomb scare forced police to clear out a middle school in mill valley. police and bomb squads ultimately found nothing, thankfully. as wayne freedman explains, it led to tense moments, especially for the parents. >> usually it's the kids who stand in line during a school day, not at mill valley middle school this morning. >> what are the kids thinking? they have to deal with this. >> the threat came in on a telephone message line. an adult voice says acting superintendent raquel rose. >> brief clearly stated they placed a bomb in the facility. >> immediately students heard an announcement in every classroom. >> is this a drill?

>> then supervisor dianne feinstein telling the public about the assassinations of two city leaders. today, a moment to remember what happened. abc 7 news reporter vic lee has the story. >> it was beyond belief what was about to happen 40 years ago in late november. the chaotic scene after the double murders. shocked police officers rushing to city hall. the discovery of two bodies gunned down in their offices. mayor george mosconi, the leader of the liberal wing and the emerging power in san francisco. supervisor harvey milk, the first openly gay elected official in the city and the state murdered by a killer they all knew. disgruntled former supervisor, dan white. it's hard to forget that day. mayor mosconi's bust graces the hall opposite the mayor's door. the same door white passed through that day. milk's statue on the other end of city hall, opposite the supervisor's chambers.

uk's house of lords admitted that his bosses failure to show up didn't look great. okay. gift cards are really big business. how safe are they? >> good question. in time for the holidays, me michael finney is here. >> let me tell you how big. $27 billion. we love gift cards in this country. but thieves are figured out ways to steal the money you put on gift cards that you want to give to someone else. important tips to protect you and the gift cards you buy. >> what's on your holiday wish list? if you said gift cards, you're not alone. about 6 in 10 people prefer to shop for themselves with a gift card. >> i love getting gift cards. i prefer them actually. >> usually the kids request it. >> they're easier. >> physical cards for specific stores and vendors that you buy off a rack can be an easy mark for criminals. >> scammers copy the gift card codes and then they scratch off the strip on the back of the

card. then once you load money on the card, they can steal it from you. >> always check the packaging of any gift card for physical tampering. make sure the protective stickers or coating are intact. never buy any card if the pin is revealed. >> consumer reports thinks an attractive option is a reloadable card like visa or american express. they will limit the liability to $50 and sometimes zero if you report the theft within two days. an additional benefit of those cards, they're more widely accepted as a form of payment. what about e-gift cards, the kind you purchase and send by text, e-mail or social media. they're convenient and fast. but are they safe? >> first of all, make sure you send the e-gift card to the right person. before you send it depending where, get the right e-mail address, phone number or social media account. >> since you'll be revealing

personal information about yourself and the recipient like e-mail addresses and credit card numbers, buy e-gift cards only from trusted merchants. if revealing a lot of personal information concerns you, stick with the plastic cards off the rack. keep a receipt and copy down the card numbers. sommer chants, most will replace a lost or stolen card. but you have to have proof of purchase and the card number. we run up against this all the time when people contact me through our hotline and go -- do you have the card number? do you have the receipt? . no. you got to have those two things. >> i was too lazy. so i take a picture of it. >> that's the best way. >> thanks, michael. let's move on to the weather and the rain. >> your accuweather forecast with sandhya patel. >> the front is weakening. you're still seeing showers but the north bay is getting a little bit of a break.

let me get you to fremont, you're seeing light showers in castro valley, san leandro, across 880. take it easy if you have to run errands or step out to the peninsula. san mateo to redwood city. san carlos, edgewood road definitely seeing slippery spots. now, around allen rock into san jose, we're starting to see a few drops developing. so take a look at the 24-hour rainfall totals. san jose, you have received absolutely no measurabsasurableo far. .4 in oakland. .17 in san francisco. there's more to come. temperatures in the 50s and the 60s. here's a live picture from tahoe where they have been seeing snow at the higher elevations. that snow level will be dropping. right now, chains are required on 50 and state route 88. if you're traveling up there,

this is just the start of some snowy conditions in the days ahead. a winter weather advisory above 6,000 feet until 10:00 p.m. tomorrow. expecting up to a foot at the highest peaks. expect travel difficulties and make sure you have chains. when the next storm comes in, i would not advise traveling. heavy snow makes for low visibility and difficulty traveling. winter storm warning above 4,000 feet. that snow level will come down. 10:00 p.m. wednesday until 5:00 p.m. friday. wax off your skis if you're a skier. showing you the raindrops on our lens. scattered showers through tonight. stronger storm late tomorrow night and stormy weather awaits for thursday morning. the current system is a light level 1. scattered showers. rough surf, large breakers. total rainfall anywhere from a tenth to half an inch. here's what's left of the system. 6:30 tonight. you have a few light showers. it starts t wind down in the overnight hours towards tomorrow morning. the showers will taper. we get a short break before the

next sorm comtorm comes in. low 40s to 50s. make sure you grab your umbrella before you head out the door. you will need the umbrellas at some point during the day. mid-50s to 60s. that's your break. then the level 2 storm comes in. it's a moderate strength storm on our storm impact scale. wednesday night into thursday morning, heavy rain, damaging winds which may cause power outages and knock down trees. dangerous surf is expected and potential for isolated thunder. expecting wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. downed trees and power lines. difficulty driving. let's time it out for you. tomorrow morning, these are just leftover showers that you're looking at. the storm does not arrive until tomorrow night. and when does it arrive? 10:00 p.m. in mendocino county tomorrow. 11:30, it's coming down hard. red is indicating heavier rain, possible thunder during the wee hours of the morning.

then another batch on thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. that's going to be a soaker. continuing right on through the day and then switching over to showers for thursday afternoon and evening. that one has a potential to bring a couple of inches of rain for the higher elevations and the santa cruz mountains and north bay mountains. for the lower elevations, anywhere from 3/4 to just over an inch of rain. the burn scar areas of lake and mendocino counties, some of the areas there. 10:00 p.m. wednesday until 10:00 a.m. thursday. debris flows are possible there. accuweather seven-day forecast, tomorrow morning a 1. tomorrow night into thursday, a level 2. stormy conditions expected. friday into saturday, a quick moving system. cold showers. tuesday, we have another chance of rain. so hang on to the rain gear. we're going to need all of it. dan and kristen. >> we need t we'll take it. working out, it isn't easy. >> it's gosh darn hard.
