cal trans camera. a winter weather advisory is in effect above 6,000 feet. >> take a look at how much snow has fallen. this is a look at heavenly mountain resort. the peaks could see a few feet of snow. >> a high surf advisory is in effect, waves could reach 18 to 24 feet over the next couple of days. wet run ways of san francisco international airport tonight as you look there live. there are arrival delays of almost one hour because of this wet weather. >> let's get right to abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. >> this system is shifting south. so now the south bay is starting to get some rain. it is still raining in the east bay, very light free mont at cherry street as we head into the livermore valley. you will notice heading into pleasanton that there is wet

weather. we go down the peninsula. going into san jose you are getting your share. and the santa cruz mountains we are seeing light to moderate showers. it is a level one. scattered showers through tonight, rough surf. it's a light system. between 7:00 and 10:00 tonight a few lingering showers. 4:00 to 5:00 a.m. moderate showers in pockets and a high surf advisory until 4:00 a.m. friday. watch out for large breakers. breakers could be between 18 to 24 feet bringing the risk of rip currents. next storm is a powerful one. i'll be back with a closer look at that coming right up. >> cal trans will shut down because of tomorrow's storm. it will close about a 12 mile stretch between mud creek. that area experienced the biest mudslide in cal trans history in may of last year. about 6 million cubic yards of

debris came down creating 2,400 feet of new shore line and 15 acres of new land. highway 1 was closed for 14 months reopening in july of this year. today the chp shut down one of the lanes on southbound highway 101 in san francisco because of this large pot hole. there is no word on when that lane will reopen. be prepared for long delays. traffic is backed up for miles. public works crews have been hard at work all day to dredge creeks, boost capacity for storm runoff. what that does is prevent flooding in adjacent neighborhoods. we are live with a look at why the strategy is so critical. >> reporter: mother nature created a pretty good system of handling storm runoff. there are creeks that take the storm water and feed them to major rivers.

when those creeks get filled with silt, which they do, then that triggers flooding. it's a big job to dredge the creek. as you can see, the channel has become shallow. that reduces the capacity for storm runoff to move past residential areas and empty into the river. the job is tougher when trees with low branches prevent heavier equipment to be brought in. this backhoe is what residents are counting on to keep their homes from flooding. >> we have some channels that we know will flood during the rains and we'll be heading to those and we have been heading to them to get them cleared out and handle the amount of flow that we are expecting. >> reporter: this is the nightmare that happens when the creeks overflow. the area is often a victim of the storms. the san lorenzo river is known to fill quickly. >> we do have an area in felton

that the river can rise pretty rapidly. we usually have to do some evacuation whz that occs when t we have time to preprayare for >> reporter: they are hampered by budget constraints and a team of only 45 to repair and maintain nearly 600 miles of county roads. tha iha they have delivered sand and sand bags to distribution sites. the storm is coming and this construction crew is trying to get an open roof covered. >> we don't want sudden surprises. we are getting as ready as we can with the tarps here. >> reporter: emergency personnel will be monitoring the creeks and the rivers for potential flood problems all this week as the storms approach. they will also be standing by ready to respond to any reports of mudslides, downed trees or other issues caused by the storms. abc 7 news.

building. emergency responders evacuated about 70 people. a haz-mat team was called in and determined the substance was not hazardous. >> you can never be too careful. i think we would much rather be safe than sorry when it comes to anything we find that may be questionable in mail. >> police will say it will take a couple of days to determine what the powder was. a bomb scare forced the evacuation of a middle school. police and bomb squads found nothing after searching the building. it certainly led to some tense moments especially for parents. here is abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman. >> reporter: the line of parents stretched several hundred feet, a group feeling anxious and relieved about what might have been. >> what are the kids thinking? they have to deal with this. >> reporter: a bomb threat. it came in this morning, discovered by staff on a message line said acting superintendent. >> it's an adult voice.

i couldn't decipher male or female. >> reporter: that's all they will say. the bomb threat triggered an announcement in every classroom. >> this is a drill. this is not a drill. there is like code yellow. lockdown. >> reporter: until today no one considered a bomb threat as a viable possibility. >> it's frightening. it's absolutely frighting. you don't think it could happen in your community. >> reporter: as police converged on and searched the campus staff escorted students to a nearby community center and messaged parents to pick them up. >> first name, last name and grade level. >> our kids have been conditioned and trained that this is the way our world currently works. that's sad. >> reporter: it is the united states of america in the 21st century. >> they are idiots if they think they can call school and say we are going to cause chaos for

everybody and ruin everybody's day. >> reporter: it happened. the investigation continues. in mill valley, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. the family of a young woman stabbed to death at a b.a.r.t. station wants the death penalty in the suspected killer's case. several family members attended a court hearing. wilson's family says the case is taking a toll. >> this process is going too slow for me and our families. we already have the death sentence with the murder of our daughter. this is getting very frustrating and i wish this process would move on. >> police say wilson was attacked at random. cowell's attorneys say he suffers from severe mental

illness. more than a thousand people directly impacted by the camp fire will receive a huge gift today on giving tuesday as plans for a massive cleanup of the burn areas in paradise and surrounding cities are just beginning. laura anthony joins us live with the story tonight. >> reporter: we are at chico high. this is sort of the after party, a dinner they are providing for the paradise high students and their families. earlier tonight just a few minutes ago a southern california businessman was here. he brought two suitcases full of checks with him for each and everyone of the paradise high students and the sftaff. he told us he just wanted to put a smile back on their faces. it's perhaps a small act of kindness given a larger disaster. for these kids from paradise high and these families getting even $1,000 from a man they

don't know, a businessman named bob wilson is a huge gift. >> this means so much. >> very, very welcome. it's a little soon. do you know what you might do with this money st. >> i have no idea yet. >> reporter: the principal knows his school is still standing but more than 90% of students and staff lost their homes. wilson's personal gift, all $1.1 million of it will be a huge help. >> a lot of kids will just turn the checks over to their families for basic essential items like food and gas. >> reporter: we caught up with oes director as he toured the burn area that will require an unprecedented cleanup effort. the amount of debris could exceed 6 million tons, at least three times greater than from all of last year's north bay fires. >> it is 360 degrees of destruction. these are businesses and homes

retailers are starting to sell romaine lettuce again after the fda lifted the advisory. as abc 7 news anchor explains, change is coming. >> reporter: romaine lettuce is starting to be back on store shelves. what can you expect? you will soon see labels that will tell you where the lettuce comes from and when it was harvested. the fda says this action will help them quickly trace the source if there is another outbreak. the produce association has put out this document advising

the forecast. >> i think she will be more excited when she hears several feet of snow coming this week. let me show you live doppler 7. we have showers primarily focussed in the south and east bay. let's get you to street level radar. santa clara, sunnyvale, you are seeing light rain from the peninsula to mountain view. palo alto seeing light rain. in the east bay fremont continues to see wet weather. how much rain have we received so far? a third of an inch in santa rosa. about 0.16 in napa. you will notice a couple hundredths of an inch in livermo livermore. the storm is not supposed to be a big one. temperatures right now in the 50s. a live look from our richmond bridge. this is what the commute is going to be like. slippery from our san jose camera. you will notice it is overcast and we are seeing light rain right now.

one other live picture is hard to see from our south beach camera. take it easy on the roadways. scattered showers through tonight. it will be a stormy thursday morning. here is what is left of our system between 7:00 p.m. and tomorrow morning. you will be seeing pockets of light to moderate showers. 8:00 a.m. it eases up. you get a breather in between storms even though there are scattered light showers ahead of the next system. the next system comes in and that one you will know is here. first thing tomorrow morning watch out for areas of dense fog in the north bay. 40s, 50s. make sure you have rain gear with you. scattered showers and then the storm impact scale comes back for wednesday night into thursday morning. it is a level two, moderate strength storm. expect heavy rain, dangerous winds. there is a high wind watch thursday afternoon to nighttime hours. downed trees and power lines not out of the question. wind gusts could reach up to 60

miles per hour. it will be difficult driving conditions. so definitely be careful out there. hour by hour we go wednesday night 7 p.m. this is just the beginning of the storm approaching. it's not until 9:30 wednesday night that the area starts to get the down pours. 11:30 at night we begin to see the first signs of the hefty storm. it's a soaker at 12:30. could be thunderstorms, as well. 1:30 in the morning you start to see the shift. thursday morning's commute between 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. will be dicy as we are expecting more pockets of moderate showers. 9:30 is stormy with the winds starting to pick up. that will make it worse. for the afternoon we are looking at scattered showers for your thursday going into thursday night. it does turn to snow in the mountains. let's check out the rainfall totals for the wednesday/thursday storm. most of you are in the half an inch to over an inch category. the higher elevations looking at one to three inches of rain.

a flash flood watch has been posted. 10:00 p.m. wednesday night until thursday morning. that is because there is a threat of flash flooding and debris flow. up to a foot for the highest peaks. it becomes a winter storm warning as snow level drops to 4,000 between wednesday night and friday morning. several feet of snow is expected. your accuweather seven day forecast, a level two storm and then a quick moving system friday into saturday. cold showers, one more chance of rain on tuesday of next week. at that point we'll take it. >> thank you. it is not perfect. it's good enough. >> that is the attitude that buy rrs are

live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> so we are kind of in a limbo waiting on the judge to see what is going to happen. >> time is running out for a homeless encampment in the east bay that primarily serves women. a judge is supposed to rule today whether to let them stay. >> it is in east oakland. >> reporter: organizers say the space is a haven for women who would otherwise be living on the streets. >> being on the space, creating a space like this for women is so crucial for us to get back up on our feet. >> reporter: she is co founder of the village and has lived in this camper with her daughters for a month. she says the space is a clean and sober alternative for women like her. >> we have a very unique set of circumstances when we are homeless particularly with

predators. there is not a single woman i have met around homelessness that i haven't met a woman who hasn't been raped. >> reporter: there is a community garden and a to-do list to keep things clean. >> we are trying to show a new way for the community to come together and build together. >> reporter: 13 women and their families live in the space which is set up as a tiny village an interfaith tent as well as a donation center. the city argues those inside are trespassing and some residents agree. >> this is supposed to be a safe place for women. it's not safe. how is it going to be safe? it's more dudes in there than women. >> reporter: organizers say they recently allowed some men to keep them safe but most are female. there are safety concerns with a school nearby. the women saying not all of them qualify for shelters. some have pets or jobs that make it difficult to follow shelter

curfews. a judge is stepping in to settle the dispute. >> we will be back on the streets and dealing with predators. that is what it will mean. >> reporter: it could be a matter of time before this haven is no more. abc 7 news. a convicted killer of a police officer will receive a new sentence after an appeals court tossed out the punishment he had received. henry albert smith jr. received three life sentences for the murder in 2011. smith's attorneys appealed the conviction claiming the original judge mishandled the penalty phase. on abc 7 news at 4:00, i got to sit down with sales force ceo. we covered a variety of topics including the building pressure on facebook's cheryl sandberg. famous for a lean in, turning it into a corporate phrase. some say she is taking a lot of

to make the same beer. they hope to generate a lot of money for the community devastated by the wildfires. >> some are making seven barrels. one is equal to 33 gallons. some are going to make -- i think we are making 15 barrels. that is a lot of pints when you break down 16 ounces. >> reporter: that's what many call strength in numbers and dollars. the beer will only be sold on tap mainly at the brewerys. >> it will be on tap here and the barn in west sacramento. >> reporter: for josh levy helping the survivors came as a sense of duty. the owner of the san francisco brewering company attended chico state. >> started this kickoff with giving tuesday and brewing tuesday essentially that we will all be brewing around the united states. the grain, you don't want to smash it too much. >> reporter: they start by milling the barley. the grains are transferred and

napa. our sister station in los angeles has the story. >> reporter: chaos and confusion, that is how investigators described the scene at the border line bar when the suspect started shooting. the fbi says the question it still can't answer is why. >> we have no indication of radicalization. along with the sheriff's department we continue to look to identify any motive. >> reporter: the suspect used a glauc .45 caliber semi automatically pistol purchased legally. >> the suspect fired a total of more than 50 rounds during the shooting. he had seven high capacity 30 round magazines. >> all victims died rapidly as the result of one or more gunshot wounds. the victims sustained injuries to vital areas. many were from close proximity and there was no chance of survival. >> reporter: the suspect had only one previous contact are law enforcement after neighbors heard yelling at his mother's home. >> he acted out by punching out
