know what turns me on? my better half, hors d oeuvres and bubbly. and when i really want to take it up a notch we use k-y yours & mine. tingling for me, warming for him. wow! this holiday season get what you want and there it is, the christmas season ushered in in new york city. the massive 75-year-old norway spruce is lighting up manhattan's rockefeller center this morning with five miles' worth of multicolored l.e.d. bulbs. the tree lighting marks the unofficial start of the holiday season. a traditional ceremony that goes back some 87 years.

they even brought the choir out. we'll have more from there in "the skinny." but another holiday light display is igniting controversy in a neighborhood in new jersey. >> for 15 years the apruzzi family has put on a multimedia show that's attracted hundreds of spectators, but that apparently is at the heart of the dispute between the family and their township. >> i love putting smiles on people's faces. >> reporter: but not everyone is smiling in old bridge, new jersey, which is threatening to shut down thomas apruzzi's famed holiday light display. he and his wife kris have been told they will have to fork over thousand of dollars a night for security or the town will shut them down. >> they're asking me to pay for the police at approximately $2,000 a night, and they want me to bus people in and out so they don't have to worry so people won't park on the road and that's totally wrong. >> reporter: old bridge officials say police last year received many complaints about the traffic congestion caused by apruzzi's display. and the increased crowds and parked cars compromise public safety.

the apruzzis have been putting on their display for more than 15 years. it includes more than 70,000 lights synchronized to music. apruzzi says there's never been any problems in years past but this year he's blaming a couple of neighbors that he says started complaining to the town. now he says the mayor is playing politics. >> this could have been taken care of many months ago and then they decide to -- they tried to strong arm me in october, knowing that i wasn't going to have a lot of time to do what i had to do. they tried to do stipulations with this and that and everything else like that. >> reporter: still, apruzzi insists he's not paying a dime for anything. he's hired a lawyer, he knows his rights and says this year the show will go on. >> joy and smiles. that's what the christmas holiday is all about. >> owen henry, the mayor of old bridge, new jersey, tells abc news overnight that, quote, there is a lot of misinformation out there. all we're trying to do is make sure the event is safe. >> all right. so that's it. that's what they're doing.

good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm janai norman. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." president trump is making it clear that he is not ruling out a possible pardon for former campaign chairman paul manafort. it follows the revelation that manafort has been feeding trump information about the russia probe. west coast residents are preparing for heavy rain and snow as well as the possibility of flash flooding and mud slides. wildfire devastated areas are at risk. a massive storm is coming ashore overnight. life expectancy in the u.s. is down again, largely because of suicides and drug overdoses. we're in the first downward trend since world war i and the flu epidemic a century ago.

and it's lit. the national christmas tree, that is, in washington. 96th consecutive year the president has taken part in the lighting ceremony, but it was the first lady this year who threw the switch. those are some of our top stories on this thursday, november 29th. from abc news, this is "world news now." she threw the switch. >> throw the switch. >> throw the switch. yes. okay. very aggressive way of doing it. all right. let's begin with some breaking news. authorities have found a teenage girl who went missing in north carolina on monday. >> the fbi says 13-year-old aubrey was found safe and alive in oklahoma late last night. that's more than 900 miles from her home. she was found with a 23-year-old man from albuquerque, new mexico. he's now facing child abduction charges. >> unfortunately the news about another 13-year-old girl who also disappeared from her home in north carolina is not nearly as positive. abc's steve osunsami reports.

>> reporter: north carolina investigators in rural robeson county are now looking for a killer. with heavy hearts they're sharing that after a three-week search, the body they found off this lonely road is this 13-year-old middle school student. >> we are absolutely devastated. i wish we had a different outcome for hania's family. >> reporter: hania aguilar was kidnapped from the front yard of her home while waiting to go to school on november 5th and police believe she was forced into this stolen suv captured on security cameras driving away after the kidnapping. a witness reported seeing a man forcing the girl into the truck dressed in all black and wearing a yellow bandana that covered his face. police found the suv abandoned three days later and found the girl's body in a body of water about seven miles from her home. >> we have to find out how she died, who did this to her and we have to bring the person or

persons responsible to justice. >> reporter: police had been looking to speak with the grainy figure seen here near the girl's home before she disappeared but they say there is no person of interest and shared no information about a possible suspect. >> there are so many unanswered questions, it's not clear at this point police even know who they are looking for or how long the girl was in the water. at her school system they're calling on grief counselors for students who need them. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. >> just a terrible story there. well, the big weather stories this morning are on the coasts. >> a major storm is now arriving in the west with heavy precipitation. snow in higher elevations and rain everywhere else. >> and on the other side of the country they're getting ready for another blizzard this weekend and cleaning up from the last one. places like south of buffalo on the shores of lake erie already have as much as 35 inches of snow. heavy snow in northern new york and new england. isn't that frightening. >> the new west coast storm is

coming after the devastating wildfires. sandbags are being filled. storm drains cleared to prevent any sort of flooding. mudslides, debris floes and flash flooding are all possibilities and very likely. let's get the forecast from paul williams. good morning, paul. >> good morning, kendis, janai. flash flooding, that's just one of the problems throughout california now that we finally got the rain in here, reaching all the way down towards los angeles. we're concerned about burn scar mudslides. that's going to cause drought relief but gusty winds, travel disruptions and dangerously rough seas as well. in addition to that, we're also concerned about wide spread snow as well. as well as upstate new york, vermont, new hampshire, maine, icy mix towards the ohio valley region. we're looking for that problematic situation for us around the entire great lakes region for thursday. that's not all. saturday a monster of a storm kicks in.

blustery winds across the northwest and heavy showers throughout the ohio valley region and the deep south. kendis? janai? >> get the sense that paul williams is just trying to keep himself employed? all this is happening. the locusts are coming. thank you, paul, is what i meant to say. president trump is again slamming the russia investigation, firing off a late-night tweet calling it a discredited witch hunt and a hoax. hours earlier he made it clear that pardoning campaign chairman paul manafort is a very real possibility. abc's daria albinger has more on that and the pushback in the senate over saudi arabia. >> reporter: secretary of state mike pompeo and defense secretary james mattis briefed the senate for over an hour on the war in yemen, saudi arabia and the murder of "washington post" columnist jamal khashoggi, an american resident. >> we have no smoking gun that the crown prince was involved. >> reporter: urging lawmakers to maintain ties with the saudis, but "the washington post" reported the cia has a high degree of confidence that the crown prince ordered khashoggi's

murder. so the absence of cia director gina haspel at the briefing angered some. >> it's outrageous that the senate can be stonewalled from hearing from the cia director. >> how can i make an informed decision if i don't have access to the intelligence i read about in the paper. >> reporter: senators unhappy with the president's lukewarm response to khashoggi's murder at the hands of the saudis. >> the way the administration's handled the saudi arabia event is just not acceptable. >> reporter: also on wednesday, more developments in special counsel robert mueller's investigation. former trump campaign manager paul manafort's deal now falling apart. manafort's lawyer telling abc news manafort was cooperating with trump's legal team all along. in an interview with "the new york post," the president saying a pardon for manafort is not off the table but the top democrat on the senate intelligence committee, senator mark warner, taking to twitter saying that would be an abuse of power,

adding, the pardon power is not the president's personal tool for protecting himself and his friends". daria albinger, abc news, new york. authorities have searched a houston area archdiocese office in connection with the investigation of a priest accused of child abuse. two people say lopez fondled them two decades ago when they were teenagers and the local cardinal did not take their allegation seriously. that cardinal is now leading the u.s. response to the sexual abuse scandal playing the catholic church. sales were down at dick's sporting goods after the retailer decided it would no longer sell guns to people under 21 or assault-style guns to anyone. that affected not only its hunting department but also other areas, including electronics and outdoor clothing. but this was the fifth consecutive quarter in which sales at dick's declined. walmart made a similar decision after the florida school

shooting but has not said whether it affected their sales. a new report is alleging the social media giant once considered selling access to user data. times still hard at facebook. "the wall street journal" says it viewed sealed court documents from internal e-mails showing that facebook considered charging companies for user information. they ultimately decided against it. >> they're having the best year ever. >> yeah. honda is recalling more than 100,000 odyssey minivans over concerns about the power sliding door that can open while the vehicle's moving. the recall involves minivan models from 2018 and 2019. honda is offering owners a free fix. a southwest airlines gate agent is taking some heat this morning after openly mocking a little girl's name then posting a picture of her boarding pass online.

to have enough votes by then. overseas, stock markets are mostly higher overnight following a powerful surge on wall street. all three major stock averages soared more than 2% after comments from the fed chairman indicated that interest rate hikes may not rise much farther. those gains were the market's largest in six months. despite the fed chair's comments, analysts are still expecting another interest rate hike next month. new numbers released overnight show we're not living as long as we used to. the cdc blames suicides and drug overdoses. the suicide rate last year was the highest in at least 50 years. more deaths were also reported last year and it's not just that the population is growing and aging. cdc says that we are losing too many americans to conditions that are preventible. >> wow. >> lack of sleep and, you know, such, contribute to it. turning to much lighter news. >> yeah. >> pope francis may be one of the most powerful people on the planet but that didn't stop a
