working dinner with chinese president ze ze pink. xi jinping. as the world's two largest economies seek to end an ongoing trade war but added he'd also be fine walking away empty-handed. >> i think we're very close to doing something with china but i don't know that i want to do it because what we have right now is billions and billions of dollars coming into the united states in the form of tariffs or taxes. so i really don't know. >> reporter: the president's other high-profile meeting cancelled. as he departed the white house, president trump said a planned sit-down with russian president vladimir putin was still on. >> i think it's a very good time to have the meeting. >> reporter: but just minutes later, the president announced in a tweet from air force one the meeting was off. he pointed to russia's seizure of ukrainian ships. writing, "i have decided it would be best for all parties concerned to cancel my previously scheduled meeting in argentina with president vladimir putin." that leaves more room on the president's schedule for meetings with other world leaders. he's also said to meet with turkey's president erdogan in

the wake of the killing of journalist jamal khashoggi at a saudi consulate in turkey last month. the cia has assessed that saudi crown prince mohammed bin salman ordered the killing but president trump remains unconvinced. >> maybe he did. maybe he didn't. >> reporter: the crown prince will also be in argentina but the president isn't scheduled to meet him. >> it only isn't set up. i would have met with him but we didn't set that up. >> reporter: another big moment of the president's trip is the expected signing of a revised trade agreement between the united states, canada and mexico, but that agreement won't actually go into effect until its approved by each country's legislature. with a democratic-controlled congress coming to town in january, it's not guaranteed that that agreement will sail to approval here in washington. jordyn phelps, abc news, the white house. president trump has an early start on those meetings in just a couple of hours. the only black senate republican says he won't support the president's controversial nominee for a federal judgeship in north carolina. south carolina's tim scott says he'll vote no on thomas farr. scott cited a justice department

memo revealing farr's alleged role in black voter intimidation tactics by the late senator jesse helms. scott's decision along with senator jeff flake's opposition effectively kills farr's nomination. thousands of student vets claimed their benefits were incorrect or delayed. a top v.a. official telling congress any veteran who has been underpaid will receive everything they're owed in january. the v.a. has blamed a massive backlog of claims in the last few months of inadequate training and technology issues at the same time. road crews in california are working around the clock trying to clear away the mess made by flash floods and mudslides. >> here's why. the radar shows heavy bands of rain and snow from the west coast into the rockies. likely it will last for the next few days. >> most roads in and around yosemite park are closed, blocked by mud, rocks and trees. the park was badly scarred by the deadly ferguson fire that burned for nearly a month last

a high-speed chase has ended in a deadly crash near san diego. a pickup truck carrying 11 people was speeding along interstate 8 trying to get away from those agents. that's when the truck hit a spike strip, rolled over and crashed, killing three people and injuring at least eight. well, there will be rallies and other events across the country tomorrow to mark the 20th anniversary of world aids days. it's estimated nearly 37 million people worldwide have the virus. >> and scientific advances are helping people fight aids but not everywhere. abc's brad mielke has more on that. good morning, brad. >> hey, guys. yeah, you think about the advances we've made in treating and preventing hiv, but in some parts of the world the cases are not going down, they're not holding steady, they're rising rapidly. a new report from the world health organization this week

showed 100,000 cases in europe, the vast majority of those in eastern europe, especially russia and ukraine. i talked to this doctor from the john hopkins bloomberg school of public health and also the former president of the international aids society and asked him, why are we seeing the rise? >> when you look at a country like russia in particular what you see is that they are not using treatment anywhere near enough. they have an enormous number of people living with the virus who are not treated and they also refuse to implement the basics refuse to implement the basics of prevention. of course they also have an epidemic among gay and bisexual men, men who have sex with men. you may know they have been passing very draconian anti-home sexuality laws that have, for example, shut down informational websites and made it virtually impossible to get an hiv test. >> he told me it's so important to pay attention to the geography of the disease. back in the day even in the u.s.

that wind also brought down some power lines, uprooted trees and damaged nearby homes. >> probably closed for business. >> yeah, i think so. just maybe. so new charges have been filed in the brutal and gruesome deaths of a family in new jersey. >> a husband, wife and their two children found dead, their home destroyed by fire and now the husband's brother is charged with their murders. here is abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: it was all about money. that's the reason prosecutors say paul caneiro allegedly killed his young brother, his sister-in-law and his young niece and nephew before setting their home and later his own on fire. >> it is our theory and belief that that fire was effectively a ruse to make it appear as if the overall caneiro family was somehow targeted. >> reporter: around 4:00 a.m. on november 20th, prosecutors claim the 51-year-old first went to his brother and business partner's new jersey home and fatally shot him. they say he then shot and stabbed his brother's 45-year-old wife jennifer and stabbed his own 11-year-old

nephew and 8-year-old niece multiple times, killing them all then starting a fire in their basement. around 5:00 a.m., the d.a. says paul caneiro started a fire at his own home with his wife and daughters inside. they were all able to escape unharmed. initially charged in that arson, caneiro now faces four counts of murder. police are now launching an investigation into the finances of both brothers. paul caneiro plans to plead not guilty to all the charges, including the horrific crimes that took place in the hse right behind me. linsey davis, abc news, colts neck, new jersey. >> such a strange mystery there in new jersey. our thanks to linsey. well, coming up, the major auction today. >> hugh hefner memorabilia is for sale so we're taking a trip back to 1999 and dropping in on the playboy mansion to see hef at home. you're watching "world news now."

that bombshell guilty plea in the russia investigation. michael cohen, the president's longtime fixer, admitting to lying to congress. >> president trump arrived in argentina last night for the g20 summit and immediately tweeted, calling for an end to the russia probe. but before leaving d.c., he slammed cohen over his plea deal with special counsel robert mueller. in court papers, cohen claimed that talks about building a trump tower in moscow continued well into 2016, even after donald trump became the presumptive republican nominee and russia was stepping up efforts to help him defeat hillary clinton. abc's pierre thomas has the details. >> reporter: michael cohen, the president's former personal attorney and fixer, swarmed outside a federal court in lower manhattan after pleading guilty as part of his bombshell plea deal with special counsel robert mueller. >> mr. cohen has cooperated. mr. cohen will continue to cooperate. >> reporter: sources tell abc news cohen has already spent more than 70 hours talking to mueller's investigators about the 2016 campaign and president trump's business ties to russia. he pleaded guilty to lying to congress about plans to build a

trump tower in moscow. cohen had told lawmakers the moscow project was abandoned in january 2016. he now says that's not true, that the project did not end until june, deep into the campaign. but cohen now says he briefed the president and members of his family on multiple occasions. the next month, candidate trump said this -- >> i have no relationship to russia. >> reporter: cohen now admits he also discussed trump tower moscow in 2016 with top officials in the russian government. and he planned to visit moscow that june. according to court documents, he even spoke to a trump business associate about the possibility of trump himself traveling to russia once he becomes the nominee after the convention. that didn't happen. cohen once said he would take a bullet for donald trump. >> i'm obviously very loyal and very dedicated to mr. trump. >> reporter: in court, cohen said he lied to congress to be consistent with individual one's

political message and out of loyalty to individual one. individual one is president trump. the president once praised cohen to the skies, saying he's always respected him. >> but i always liked michael and he's a good person. >> reporter: but this was the furious presidt. >> he's a weak person and not a very smart person. what he's trying to do is end -- and it's very simple. he's got himself a big prison sentence and he's trying to get a much lesser prison sentence by making up a story. very simply, michael cohen is lying. >> those 70-plus hours of interviews with investigators covered a wide range of topics including obstruction and whether the president discussed pardons. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. >> "the new york daily news" calls it "cohen down for lying." another headline called it a "nightmare before christmas."

>> well, 70 hours with the special counsel's team. >> that's a long time. the president, as a result, cancelled a meeting with vladimir putin shortly after taking off from washington. >> they were planning to follow up on their summit in helsinki while at a formal summit in buenos aires for the g20. shortly after saying it was a good time to meet with putin, the president called it off, citing russia's recent aggression towards the ukraine. >> it looks like vladimir putin may have come close to having a place of his own in moscow's trump tower had it actually materialized. the trump organization was reportedly planning to give putin a $50 million penthouse in the building. sources tell buzzfeed, the website, that michael cohen had discussed the idea with russian officials as they negotiated the real estate deal. well, turning now to the intense storm systems on the move across the country this morning. some strong enough to last through the weekend. >> the storm pounding the west

coast is moving towards the sierra nevada and the rockies, but a new system is churning in the pacific ocean, packing more rain, snow and wind. >> southern california has already been hit with at least 5 inches of rain, and that new round of wet weather is likely to trigger more mudslides and flooding in the wildfire burn zones. here is abc's will carr. >> reporter: we're in agora hills, california. this is a state that is bone-dry. it is thirsty for rain and we've had too much actually in the past 24 hours. it has snarled traffic across the state. we've seen big rigs jackknife and dangerous accidents and a large part of this region has been impacted by wildfires over the past year, especially the past month, including here in agora hills and nearby malibu. there are no trees to stop all of that mud and rock from flowing down and slamming into homes that are still standing and communities that have already been devastated. in agora hills, california, will carr, abc news. breaking overnight, police in mississippi are searching for a shooter who opened fire on a

mother and her two kids. the shooting happened right near the university of mississippi medical center in jackson. so the mother grabbed the kids and ran them into that hospital. the 1 and 3-year-olds are listed in stable condition. police believe the shooter knew the mother. there is now an arrest in the alabama case that led to police shooting and killing a black man who was a so-called good guy with a gun, but the controversy is far from over. here's abc's steve osunsami. >> let's go! >> reporter: police have in custody the real gunman who is accused of sending black friday shoppers running for their lives. when police say he opened fire during an argument at this alabama mall south of birmingham. 20-year-old aaron brown was arrested south of atlanta where police say he had been hiding out. he's charged with attempted murder. the family of ej bradford, who was mistakenly killed in the chaos by a responding police officer, is demanding that investigators release the police

body camera videos. city officials are joining them, calling for the alabama law enforcement agency to share the video now. >> we urge them to approve this request no later than noon on monday. >> reporter: bradford, who briefly served in the army, was holding a gun when he was killed. a gun his family said he had legally. his family said he was the so-called good guy with the gun trying to save lives but say he ended up being shot by a police officer because he's black. >> a murderer is a murderer and it doesn't have a color. even if they wear a shield. >> reporter: state investigators for now are holding firm, saying they're not releasing anything until their investigation is complete. bradford's funeral is scheduled for saturday. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. a small plane crash sent emergency crews racing to a college campus outside atlanta. the aircraft went down near a building at kennesaw state university. the two people on board suffered minor injuries.

no one on the ground was hurt. the crash is being blamed on engine failure. now to a strange story from a suburb of phoenix. a man accidentally shot himself inside a walmart. police say the man had a handgun in the waistband of his sweatpants. when he tried to reposition the weapon, he shot himself in the groin area. ouch. his injury was described as survivable. police filed a report for the unlawful discharge of a firearm. >> that's what you want, survivable, with one of those injuries? >> right? >> repairable and survivable would be nice. a steer that stands head and shoulders above the rest has some company. >> so this week we told you about nickers, he's the 6'4", 3,000-pound holstein towering over his bovine peers. those are types of cattle. i looked it up. >> wikipedia's a good thing. meet cowboy. he's more than 6 feet tall and lives on an animal rescue farm near san diego. cowboy's handler says the big guy is very friendly.

>> okay. all right. >> but if she did, nothing -- >> reporter: telling his dad in august he strangled his wife shanann in a rage because he claims she murdered their two young daughters as their marriage was imploding. but investigators say that claim was a lie, that he killed shanann and his daughter celeste, 3, and bella, 4. >> are you chris? >> yes. >> reporter: video and audio released shows watts letting police into their home when his family was first reported missing. >> chris, did she drive the car -- >> reporter: officers with dogs searching every room for clues.

but investigators say watts knew they were already dead, having just returned from dumping their bodies at this remote oil field. watts also admitted to having an affair with a co-worker, nicole kessinger, keeping photos of her hidden in a secret app on his phone. watts pleaded guilty to all three murders and last week he was sentenced. he'll spend the rest of his life in prison. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> one one of the most disturbing parts of that story, that the dad actually did an interview while, you know, his wife and two daughters were still said to be missing. >> a detailed interview and seemed so calm throughout but knowing what he had already done. >> yeah. moving on now to a young boy who got the scare of his life during a family vacation in the bahamas.

>> just a lot of mud coming down at a very rapid rate of speed now here in rice canyon. >> reporter: evacuations underway in butte county. this man riding his horses to safety not far from the city of paradise, the community wiped off the map from the camp fire. with more rain on the way, all eyes are on the burn scars because there are no trees to stop all that mud and rock from flowing down and slamming into homes that are still standing and communities that have already been devastated. in agora hills, california, will carr, abc news. >> our thanks to will there. as we mentioned, the wet weather won't be ending any time soon. >> the radar is showing plenty of rain and snow stretching from the west coast into the rockies. accuweather's meteorologist julia weiden joins us now with the details. julia? >> kendis, janai, we're watching as the worst of the wet weather comes to an end for california on friday. now, that same storm system is going to be developing and heading eastbound as we go through the rest of the day and into the weekend.

watching for severe storms through the deep south and a snowstorm over the weekend for areas in the northern plains. as for that severe weather, we're mostly concerned about little rock and through arkansas, high gusting winds, heavy downpours and isolated tornadoes possible. kendis? janai? >> our thanks to julia there, keeping an eye on everything happening weather-wise. now we are seeing some real bravery from the northern california fire zone thanks to body cam footage taken by sheriff deputy aaron parmley. >> this was fascinating. he thought that he was capturing the last moments of his life. abc's david muir with the details. >> reporter: the camp fire had just broken out and four nurses from feather river hospital were trapped. there is fire all around them. you could hear a woman yelling for help in the distance. >> help! help! >> reporter: and you could see what it was like, the unthinkable scene as thick smoke and flames closed in on homes, so many of them with people still inside.

you can hear his breathing. deputy parmley racing toward the flame. the burning embers blowing across the street. he radios in. they try to find a way out. one nurse asking the deputy, is anyone coming? >> are they coming for us? >> come on. watch out! watch out! >> reporter: you can see the nurses wearing their surgical masks. suddenly they spot a bulldozer coming toward them. officer parmley uses his flashlight to try to flag it down. the bulldozer stops. half of them get in, the others follow right behind. >> can we get in? >> yeah, come on. >> reporter: they had discovered a way out. deputy parmley making sure everyone was safe before climbing in himself, shutting the door, driving out. they all survived. >> but so many others did not survive that fire. of course, our thanks to david muir. we turn now to the political firestorm stemming from the russia investigation.

meeting with vladimir putin. abc's jonathan karl has more. >> reporter: after calling michael cohen a liar, a defiant president trump did not deny that he was working on a moscow trump tower deal during the campaign. >> when i run for president, that doesn't mean i'm not allowed to do business. i was doing a lot of different things when i was running. after i won, obviously i don't do business. >> reporter: he says he ditched the moscow project in early 2016 well before he clinched the republican nomination. but he said he didn't have to. >> there would be nothing wrong if i did do it. i was running my business while i was campaigning. there was a good chance that i wouldn't have won, in which case i would have gotten back into the business and why should i lose lots of opportunities? >> reporter: business deals aside, donald trump has lavished praise on vladimir putin. he's done it as president and he did it repeatedly during the campaign. >> i respect putin. he's a stronger leader, i can tell you that, unlike what we have. we have a pathetic leader. >> reporter: and just minutes before departing for argentina

for a big summit with the leaders of the world's top 20 economies, he confirmed plans to have a one-on-one meeting with putin who is also attending the summit. >> i think it's a very good time to have the meeting. >> reporter: but less than an hour later, president trump cancelled his putin meeting with a tweet while he was aboard air force one, citing russia's seizure of three ukrainian ships earlier this week. the president's legal team said that his written answers on this question of the moscow trump tower project were largely consistent with what michael cohen said about the project. if that's so, that would mean that the written answers were also contradictory to what the president said over and over again over the past two years, that he had no business dealings whatsoever with moscow. jonathan karl, abc news, buenos aires. >> buenos aires looking beautiful there in the background, jonathan. well, today in buenos aires, president trump and the leaders of canada and mexico will sign a revamped version of the nafta
