stage this morning here in argentina, signing a new trade deal with canada and mexico and high-stakes meeting to prevent a trade war with china, he is facing mounting troubles back home. >> michael cohen! >> reporter: president trump's longtime fixer has now gone state's witness. michael cohen entering a plea agreement with special counsel robert mueller. it's a move with massive implications for the special counsel investigation and perhaps the trump presidency. cohen has admitted to lying to congress about working during the 2016 campaign to strike a deal to build a trump tower in moscow. and he says he was lying to protect his longtime boss, donald trump. as the president left the white house for argentina, he lashed out at his former fixer. >> he's a weak person and not a very smart person. very simply, michael cohen is lying and he's trying to get a reduced sentence for things that have nothing to do with me. >> reporter: at the same time the president did not deny trying to pull together the

moscow deal even as he was campaigning for president. >> when i run for president, that doesn't mean i'm not allowed to do business. i was doing a lot of different things when i was running. after i won, obviously i don't do business. >> reporter: for more than two years, trump has repeatedly insisted he has had no business ties with russia. >> but zero. i will tell you right now, zero. i have nothing to do with russia. >> reporter: throughout his campaign and into his presidency president trump has talked about the need for the u.s. government to have closer ties with russia. >> wouldn't it be great if we actually got along with russia? wouldn't it be great? is there anything wrong with that? >> reporter: he said he ditched the moscow project in early 2016 before he clinched the republican nomination, but he says he didn't have to. >> there would be nothing wrong if i did do it. i was running my business while i was campaigning. there was a good chance that i wouldn't have won, in which case i would have gotten back into the business and why should i lose lots of opportunities? >> reporter: and while the

president was on air force one flying down here to argentina, another surprise. he abruptly canceled his planned meeting with vladimir putin. he was going to meet with him right here, very highly anticipated meeting, george, and the president said he was calling it off because of russian aggression in ukraine. >> okay, jon karl, thanks very much. let's bring in our chief legal analyst, dan abrams. we saw the president say this had nothing to do with him. one reason it's so important, it does put the president right at the center of this effort. >> right, and the question becomes, why, right? we talked about this before, this idea that this is a piece in the puzzle. this isn't the proof of collusion. this isn't the smoking gun but the question becomes, why did the president, if cohen is telling the truth, want to move the date back from june to january? why is that six-month period so important? and the answer would be if it's true, that he didn't want to be seen as talking to russia during the period right when you have got all the hacking. you have got the meeting with

don junior. this is the heart of the contact and the problems with the russians that's happening in june. >> he gets another important thing that mueller and reporters have uncovered now over the last year and a half. when it comes to russia, whether the issue is contacts or building the trump tower in moscow or the attorney general talking to a russian ambassador during the campaign, don junior having this meeting, every single time, it starts out with a lie. then the lie is uncovered. mueller's job is to find out why. >> also mueller's job is to put them all together. you can't look at each one in isolation. you can't say to yourself, flynn. what is flynn's single, single lie tell us? that's not the question. the question is what does flynn's lie tell us in connection with the other lies? why is everyone seemingly distancing themselves from either conversations they had, meetings, et cetera, with russians? what was going on? that's the question, the big picture question, mueller has to ask. >> the other important takeaway. we now know michael cohen has

implicated the president on campaign finance felonies in his previous case, and implicated the president in trump tower and as jon said we reported yesterday, he spent 70 hours with mueller's team. this is not over. >> right, and so knowing how close michael cohen was to donald trump, you know donald trump has to be worked. i mean, regardless of what we already know already, the idea that one of his closest confidantes -- and, remember, attorney/client privilege only applies to legal work. >> not business work. >> it doesn't apply to business work, so he can talk about any business contacts that the president had and that's got to be unnerving. >> dan abrams, thanks very much. michael. >> all right, george. now to those dangerous storms out west. relentless rain forcing mandatory evacuations and triggering powerful mudslides, and it's happening in areas already affected and devastated by wildfires. abc's will carr is in agoura hills, california, with the very latest. good morning, will. >> reporter: michael, the sandbags are out this morning because this is really a double-edged sword. you have already had the fires

that have raced through this area, burning trees that normally stop all that rock and mud from flowing down into communities like in that have been devastated and now that we're getting that much-needed rain, we're also getting those dangerous mudslides. raging mud slides sweeping across parts of california scorched by wildfires trapping cars and forcing evacuations. >> there's a lot of mud coming down at a very rapid rate of speed now here in rice canyon. >> reporter: the fragile fire-scarred hillsides crumbling after a nonstop deluge. the region bone dry and thirsty for rain getting so much precipitation so quickly -- >> it was bad. we almost lost our whole driveway. >> reporter: roads inundated, the rain-slicked streets seeing crash of crash. some areas getting enough rain to bury highway signs. this big rig left dangling off the side of a highway, cars flipped over and flattened. four firefighters injured when a car spun out and crashed into their truck. this man overwhelmed by the raging waters of the l.a. river airlifted to safety, and emergency services telling

residents to evacuate, but as the threat continues to grow, some residents choosing to stay. >> if we do, we're going to lose it. if we don't, we can fight it which is what we've been doing. >> reporter: even though the rain is letting up, we're expecting more across the region this weekend and into this week, cecilia. >> okay, will, thank you. as we saw, those wildfires were just devastating. the camp fire alone in california ravaged more than 18,000 buildings and the death toll stands at 88 and nearly 200 people are still unaccounted for even as the official search for missing has been stopped. now this morning, we are seeing new bodycam footage from a first responder who turned on that camera thinking it would be recording his final moments. thankfully he survived, and our chief national correspondent, matt gutman, also has more from agoura hills. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, cecilia. deputy aaron parmley refused to

let those four nurses be part of that statistic that you just mentioned, nearly 200 unaccounted for, and when his police cruiser broke down he proceeded on foot through that firestorm to find them. deputy aaron parmley thought this video would document his last minutes alive. overnight the sheriff's office releasing his body camera video from the camp fire. he was assigned to evacuate four nurses at the feather rivers hospital from the hellscape earlier this month. >> that's not good. >> reporter: you can hear people cry out for help. >> help, help! >> reporter: the hurricane of fire that turned the sky blood orange. along with the nurses, they cling toe that orphan hot ro-- oven-hot road in a blizzard of embers. >> it's bad. >> are they coming for us? >> reporter: the area so choked with smoke, they can't tell this rescue vehicle is a bulldozer until they hop on. >> we can only fit one or two. >> reporter: another fire truck pulls up and they pile in. >> the dozer. >> reporter: even when they got into those vehicles they still

weren't sure they were going to make it. they had to drive through a tunnel of fire to make it to safety. and what's incredible about this video, it looks like it was shot in the nighttime but everything you just saw was shot between the hours of 8:30 and 10:00 in the morning, george. >> that's just stunning, a picture of a hero in hell right there doing an amazing job. matt, thanks very much. we move on to a deadly crash at the border. three people killed, eight injured when a pickup truck hitting 100 miles an hour flipped over trying to flee the border patrol. abc's kayna whitworth has the latest. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: yeah, george. good morning. agents near the border, of course, on high alert. the crash happened in rural san diego county and most of the 11 people in the pickup truck were in the back without seat belts. three people killed and nearly everyone else recovering from injuries. a high-speed chase ending in a fatal crash near the san diego/mexico border. this new video showing the terrifying aftermath. at 4:30 thursday border control agents attempting to pull over a

white pick-up truck. but instead of stopping, the driver taking off, leading agents on a hundred-mile-an-hour chase, and they laid out a spike trip to stop the truck but the spikes sending the vehicle airborne, the pick-up truck flipping over with 11 passengers, many of whom were laying in the truck's flatbed. the crash ejecting all of the passengers, killing three. the rest transported to the hospital with injuries. now, the driver who is a u.s. citizen was not injured and is currently in custody. george. >> thanks very much, kayna. all right, george. we have to turn to breaking news just in. marriott international revealing a data breach that could affect up to 500 million guests who made reservations at starwood properties. for 327 million of these guests the information includes some combination of name, mailing addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, passport numbers and more. marriott is investigating right now.

michael. >> thank you, cecilia. now to an abc news exclusive involving new developments in that hazing scandal in maryland where four high school football players were accused of sexually assaulting freshmen players. abc's stephanie ramos is in damascus, maryland with the latest. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: michael, good morning. the incident allegedly happened october 31st here at demascus high school. the targets, said to be younger and weaker players who were ambushed by the suspects before football practice. this morning, four sophomore football players from this suburban maryland high school have been indicted for allegedly participating in the sexual assault of four younger teammates in their locker room. >> the maximum penalties by law are up to life imprisonment. >> reporter: the state's attorney telling abc news exclusively a grand jury handed down eight counts against each of the four 15-year-olds charging them all as adults for sexual assault, attempted assault and conspiracy to commit assault.

authorities now investigating the possibility that this is not the first incident at damascus high school. investigators say one of the suspects told them it was a so-called tradition. parents and students at damascus, shocked. >> even if it was tradition, it shouldn't be tradition at all, you know, sexual assault. >> it's been a learning experience for both the students as well as the parents in the community to try to wrap their head around these events and take the necessary steps to make sure it doesn't happen in the future. >> reporter: the prosecutor says he hopes the severity of the charges brings some sense of justice to the victims. >> by sending this to the grand jury and by indicting these teens, are you hoping to send a wir message to the community, to teenagers? >> i'm not looking to send a message to anybody beyond the boys that were the victims in this case and those who committed these crimes that there will be accountability when you engage in the kind of

activities that these boys engaged in and, you know, try to bring some sense of justice to these boys that were violated. >> reporter: there's also a fifth student accused in all of this. he's being charged as a juvenile. now, before the indictment i spoke with the attorney for one of the suspects. he wanted all of the teens to be charged as juveniles despite the gruesome details revealed earlier this week. as for the school district they say they'll now handle their own investigation now that police have wrapped up their own and michael, they say they will also take a closer look at their athletics program, michael. >> the whole thing just makes you shake your head in disbelief. thank you so much, stephanie. cecilia? we want to turn to new details in the deadly new jersey mansion fire, the suspect accused of killing his own brother, sister-in-law, niece and nephew and is now set to appear in court today. linsey davis is outside that courthouse in colts neck, new jersey, and now police believe a money dispute could be at the center of this. >> reporter: good morning to you, cecilia.

exactly right. prosecutors believe that paul caneiro was motivated by money and his younger brother keith was also his business partner for several decades, and now authorities say days before thanksgiving, paul caneiro shot his own brother several times then killed his brother's wife and his two children before setting a fire in the basement of their home. then about an hour later the d.a. says paul caneiro started a fire at his own home with his wife and daughters inside. they were all able to escape unharmed. prosecutors say that it was all a ruse. they allege that he was trying to make it seem like both caneiro families were being targeted. as you said, cecilia, paul is expected to appear in court here today where he plans to plead not guilty to all charges. if convicted on those four murder counts, he faces life in prison. cecilia? >> you'll be following that for us, thank you. now, do you guys swim with sharks? >> no. >> never. >> okay. well, this is just for you. a shark attack was caught on camera. a family vacationing in the bahamas swimming with nurse

good morning, i'm alexis smith from abc 7 mornings. a driver on the peninsula was arrested this morning of suspected dui. now the chp is trying to figure out if that driver had tesla autopilot engaged. officers were following a model s going about 70 miles per hour on southbound 101 at whipple avenue. they noticed the driver was slumped over and appeared to be asleep at the wheel. the patrol car pulled in front of the tesla to slow it down. they gave the driver a field sobriety test and he was arrested. switching to look at current issues on the roads, we've got definitely some trouble here in the berkeley area. westbound 80, we've got a five

interrogation tapes of chris watts, the colorado man who confessed to killing his family in cold blood. authorities now giving us an inside look at the investigation just days after watts was sentenced to life in prison. amy here with details. >> that's right, george, and everyone. the tapes reveal just about every key step in this investigation that led to chris watts' arrest but among the most compelling, the recordings of what he said during that police interrogation. >> reporter: for the first time, we are hearing chris watts confess to murdering his wife. >> i felt such anger that nothing i didn't feel anything. >> reporter: the father of two seen with his father in a police interrogation room blaming the death of the couple's two daughters on his wife, shanann watts. >> and choked her or what? >> that's rage. >> god almighty, son. >> reporter: a lie he repeated

to investigators. >> my babies are gone, and i put my hands around my wife's neck and did that same thing. >> did shanann fight back at all? >> reporter: he would later plead guilty to all three murders. overnight, the colorado d.a.'s office releasing dozens of videos from the investigation. the watts' home being searched by police and canines. surveillance video showing him loading items into the truck and later showing investigators where to find his family's bodies. >> can you mark it for me?

>> for shanann? okay, and where are the girls at? >> here. >> do you know which one? >> reporter: and drone video of the oil field where the bodies were found, his wife wrapped in sheets from their bed. >> why take their bodies out of the house and bury them? >> i was scared. i didn't know what else to do. >> reporter: prosecutors say he was having an affair with a co-worker and wanted a, quote, fresh start. >> you told her about the affair? >> i didn't tell her i had one. she just knew. >> reporter: in newly released text messages, shanann who was pregnant with the couple's third child, confronting her husband over their troubled marriage. while you were working and living the bachelor life i'm carrying our third and fighting with our two kids daily. that co-worker, nichol kessinger, telling police she had no idea he was still married.

>> he lied to me because if i'd have known he had a child on the way, i'd have never wasted my time with him in the first place. >> reporter: prosecutors releasing these photos of watts and kessinger she was searching for wedding dresses in the days before the murders. after watts confessed, investigators say she was searching how many money amber in the scott peterson case. >> i'm still in shock that this whole thing happened. i -- i, like, that's why i gave him the benefit of the doubt for the first day because i was just, like, no way. i didn't even think about that. i mean, murder was not on the top of my mind when somebody doesn't come home for an evening. >> a judge sentenced chris watts last week to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole but perhaps the most chilling part of the story is that everyone who knew chris never saw this coming.

special counsel. as the president takes the world stage this morning here in can argentina, signing a new trade deal with canada and mexico -- >> this is a model agreement that changes the trade landscape forever. >> reporter: and a high-stakes to prevent a trade war with china, he's facing mounting troubles back home. president trump's longtime fixer has now gone state's witness. michael cohen entering a plea agreement with special counsel robert mueller. it's a move with massive implications for the special counsel investigation and perhaps the trump presidency. cohen has admitted lying to congress about working during the 2016 campaign to strike a deal to build a trump tower in moscow. he says he was lying to protect his longtime boss, donald trump. as the president left the white house for argentina, he lashed out at his former fixer. >> he's a weak person and not a very smart person. very simply, michael cohen is lying and he's trying to get a

reduced sentence for things that have nothing to do with me. >> reporter: but at the same time the president did not deny trying to pull together the moscow deal even as he was campaigning for president. >> when i run for president, that doesn't mean i'm not allowed to do business. i was doing a lot of different things when i was running. after i won, obviously i don't do business. >> reporter: he says he ditched the moscow project in early 2016 before he clinched the republican nomination. but he says he didn't have to. >> there would be nothing wrong if i did do it. i was running my business while i was campaigning. there was a good chance i wouldn't have won, in which case i would have gotten back into the business and why should i lose lots of opportunities? >> reporter: there was another surprise from the president as he was flying on air force one down here to argentina. he abruptly canceled a planned meeting with vladimir putin, a highly anticipated meeting, george, but the president said he was not going to go through with it because of russian aggression in ukraine. >> wouldn't look right either.

>> why do we need aveeno baby lotion? we can get that anywhere. >> reporter: it happened to this expectant parent when gifts that weren't on their wish list started showing up on their doorstep. >> it was really confusing when we got this gift. we didn't ask for it. my wife didn't want it. i didn't want it and once we figured out that a friend had paid money for something that none of us wanted, like trying to do something nice for us, then we got really annoyed. >> reporter: turns out for more than a year amazon has been automatically including as many as three sponsored products on baby registries. >> with the baby registry ads amazon was unique. we did look at target, we looked at bye-bye baby which is bed, bath & beyond, and for them you open a baby registry and they're blank. for amazon you open one and there were effectively items already in your shopping cart ready to be purchased by people looking for your registry. >> reporter: the ads appear the same as the other items on the registry save for a small tag that reads sponsored.

amazon now says we're constantly experiencing with new ways to improve the shopping experience for customers and these sponsored listings are currently being phased out. and i have to say, cecilia, i'm a bit familiar with this. just a few weeks ago i was filling out my own baby registry and this happened to me on amazon. >> that's wild. but you buried the lead there. your own baby, we're so happy! we're so happy for you and your husband. >> thank you so much. i want to help people see this. take a look at this. see how hard it is to spot the word "sponsored" inside of this registry? now, amazon told us overnight they are phasing this out so no new registries will have these sponsored posts within them. however, if you're out there shopping and it's the holiday season and really important to know that retailers are now toying with all these new ways to get to us. obviously they want to boost their bottom line. they also want to make it easier for us to shop and this is the kind of thing you should watch out for as you are shopping for those holiday

gifts. >> it's so easy to be tricked that this so what happens if you end up receiving some of these items that someone bought by clicking on one of these ads? >> amazon said their return policy applies here. you can return them for a full refund. anybody who has received this type of item off their baby registry from amazon is entitled to that refund. >> we won't click on any ads on your baby registry. we're so happy for you. >> thank you, cecilia. >> george, over to you. >> congratulations, rebecca. we move to our health alert. children getting misdiagnosed with adhd. a new study says it could come from starting school early. our chief medical correspondent dr. jen ashton is here with the details. i got to say that surprised me. >> it is a little surprising. here's the study out just this week in "the new england journal of medicine." they looked at over 400,000 kids in this country from every state and matched their insurance data about their diagnosis for adhd. they found that if a child was enrolled in kindergarten before a september 1st cutoff, so they're born, let's say in april -- sorry, in august,

they're younger for their grade and have a 30% higher chance of being diagnosed with adhd. >> it's correlation, not cause though, right? >> exactly, george. they didn't confirm the diagnosis and the authors of this study are not saying whether it's positive or negative. they're just saying the cutoff date and your birthday matters. >> what difference could that make? >> we're both parents. let's say you have a 5-year-old. what is mature behavior for a 5-year-old might be immature for a 6-year-old. children develop differently at that age because small differences in age at that point make a big difference in their behavior potentially. when you're our age, it doesn't matter. when they're looking at this, if you're young for your grade, then you might be more likely to get attention saying, are they fidgety, are they distracted, do they meet criteria for a diagnosis of adhd. >> we're both parents of kids with adhd and it does take years to figure out the right diagnosis and the right way to treat it. why are more kids being diagnosed with it?

>> i think our awareness is up. when you and i were in school, the term didn't even exist. that didn't mean the disorder didn't exist. it meant people weren't diagnosed with it. we couldn't define it or look for it, screen for it, diagnose it and then treat it. my child was misdiagnosed until the age of 12 and at that point when medication was started, george, it was like putting glasses on a person who couldn't see. now, medication is not for every child with adhd. but it can be life changing. that's the key. >> i have to say once we found the right medication as well it made all the difference. >> exactly. awareness. >> thanks very much. we all have our traditions and techniques to decorating a christmas tree. well, in the home of our own paula faris, they take it to a whole other level. check it out. >> i want to see if i can find it. >> missed. landon missing. j.j., a little older, maybe more
