without incident. the earthquake shook people up and many are posting about their experience on social media. >> just listen. >> reporter: this home surveillance captured the earthquake the minute it struck. >> it knocked broke glass. >> reporter: all over social media people posted more terrifying moments. this mother scrambles to gets her child as her house is shaking. one student at colony high school shared this video as she and her classmates prepared for aftershocks. philip peterson was in an office building whens he building started shaking. >> it was 45 seconds but it felt like a half hour. it's shaking, shaking and started to roll. >> reporter: britdny sutter was getting her daughter ready for school when the earthquake hitz. >> it was pretty scary. everything started shaking. it was waves of shaking.

we got into the doorway of our laundry room and grabbed the dog and held on. >> reporter: the damage was more severe near alaska international airport. a car was trapped in a crumbled section of minnesota drive. there are reports of bridges and roads damages. governor bill walker tweeted this picture of a collapsed area of glen highway. in 1964 a 9.2 earthquake hit alaska and caused severe damage. that 1964 earthquake was the most powerful. it shook anchorage for more than 24 minutes causing massive devastation. more than 400 were killed by the tsunami it created. waved swamped boats in the bay airy and as far south as los angeles. alaskans will likely be feeling aftershocks for weeks or even months just like the one

that measured 5.8 that hit this morning. >> it looks like it's an average aftershock. people in anchorage should expect to be feeling aftershocks most of today and potentially from a lotds longer time. >> there have been at least 30 aftershocks so far. anchorage like san francisco is part of the pacific ring of fire. the ring consists of oceanianic plate movements and volcanic arcs. you can see san francisco is right on that zone as well. >> absolutely. we all know the bay airy is quake country as well. so when we see a big one somewhere else we wonder what the effect might be here. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman looked into that and is live with some insight.

wayne? >> reporter: hello, dan. the last time it went, it was a 7.0 quake just like the one up north, but the 7.0 here is not atds all like the 7.0 they had there. live through just one and the experience of a major earthquake will imprint on your memory for the rest of your days. the shaking that hit anchorage this morning lasted about one minute. it's what a 7.0 earthquake looks and feels like and yet experts call this a relatively mild one. >> the shaking comes from how close you are to the earthquake very dr. roland berkman, no doutd dout doubt, he says occurred. take a good look at. this when the relatively shallow hayward fault finally slips the

bay airy will not have that same luxury. it might be ten times worse snietd will be a minute of terror. it will be really strong shaking, stronger than the earthquake today because it's so close. and it's just going to be many, many more people affected by it. >> reporter: before 1906 san franciscans referred to the 1868 hayward quake as the big one. based on geological studies, it's now overdue. cal state stadium sits directly on the fault line. it's one of the safest spots in the bay area. as for the rest -- >> we should expect several hundred if not thousands of people perishing. we should expect on the order of 100 billion or even a couple hundred billion dollars of damage. >> you're not exaggerating? >> i'm not exaggerating.
