>> and a special crowd caught today's big game. the honor for the people we depend on in an emergency. abc 7 news starts now. >> announcer: live where you live. this is abc 7 news. signs of tribute today across our nation, flags at half staff from the white house to the big game at cal memorial stadium in memory of our country's 41st president, george h.w. bush. hello, thanks for joining us, i'm eric thomas. >> i'm dion lim. the world is remembering george herbert walker bush who died last night at the age of 94. a stream of mourners continues to stop at the houston home of president bush. >> we learned today his final words were to his son george w. bush saying "i love you too." marcus moore has the latest from houston. >> reporter: an outpouring of condolences and tributes. his son george wrkd bush posting this photo of his parents on instagram.

success. i'm rooting hard for you. >> how did you feel when you received that letter? >> i thought it was -- i thought he meant it, but i also thought he was trying to be a citizen in the highest sense of the word. it was profoundly moving to me. >> students at the bush school of government and public service at texas a&m university gathered to mor the former president. >> he, himself, said public service is a noble calling. we are here to try to live that out. >> the president will be buried at his presidential library and museum in college station, texas alongside his wife barbara and their daughter robin. in houston, marcus moore, abc 7 news. stock markets will close on wednesday to honor george h.w. bush's memory. the new york stock exchange will also observe a minute of silence on monday to honor president bush. the exchange traditionally

closes for all or parts of its session for the funeral of a former president. >> he had a long distinguished year, he joined the u.s. navy on his 18th birthday and became its yongest pilot in world war ii. didn't get into politics until the 1960s. being elected to congress in '66. after another failed senate bid president richard nixon appointed him ambassador to the u.n. in 1971, under president gerald ford he served as head of the cia. he ran for president in 1980 but was beaten in the republican primary by ronald reagan. reagan then chose him as his running mate. he would serve eight years as vice president. president trump released a statement on bush's passing saying president bush inspired generations of his fellow americans to public service to be, in his words, a thousand points of light illuminating the greatness, hope and opportunity of america to the world. >> the office of bill and hillary clinton released this statement, with the former president saying i will be

forever grateful for the friendship we formed. few americans have been, or will ever be, able to match president bush's record of service to the united states and the joy he took every day from it. >> the bay area is remembering former president bush today, especially those who considered george h.w. bush not only a colleague, but a friend as well. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard joins us with that story. >> i sat down with the former secretary of state george schultz who remembers his friend, president george h.w. bush as a statesman, a family man and not a bad tennis player either. >> you can see the camp nilly on the berkeley campus from here. >> george schultz enjoys the view from his san francisco man where pictures reflect his public service during the reagan administration, and friendship with former president george h.w. bush. >> what did we learn from him? we learned something about patriotism. we learned about the importance of finding a way to solve

problems. >> schultz says bush reached across party lines to try and build coalitions with political foes in a civil manner. >> we badly miss right now this ability to sit down with somebody you don't agree with and try to work a problem out. >> well, i'm deeply moved by this, deeply moved by it. >> reporter: president bush came to the bay area in 1989, days after the destructive loma earthquake. then mayor art agnos recalled bush showed real compassion for the region. >> he not only carried but he asked the kinds of questions that showed he was informed about what he needed to do, what we needed to get from him. and he was very responsive. >> san jose state political science professor melinda jackson says bush's legacy will be more than his one-term presidency. >> we tend to focus on foreign poll by, but the americans with disabilities act was passed during his presidency.

many of the first responders who responded to the camp fire retreated to a seat at berkeley's memorial stadium to catch cal take on stanford. hundreds of free tickets were distributed to firefighters, police, medics and those who helped those impacted by the devastating wildfire. the big game itself was postponed for two weeks because of the choking smoke that made bay area air too unhealthy. many first responders appreciated the gesture, but say their work was just part of the job. >> i'm grateful about being

atmosphere tonight. have the jacket handy as you step out the door. already in the 40s for ukiah. outdoor, holding in the mid and upper 50s but it will be a rather chilly night. here's a call from accuweather. especially in the north bay, dropping very close not freezing mark in a lot of spots, a lot of 30s from santa rosa to napa, around the bay shoreline, temperatures mainly in the midif not low 40s over the next 12 hours. so the bigger picture, live doppler 7 along with satellite showing you we had that cold front right there race across usz us earlier today. the showers will loosen their grip across california, chi off the next couple hours. we're already tracking our next storm system. this one will take its time mo we before the rain returns tuesday. 12 hour day planner, you do not need the umbrella tomorrow, it's a dry finish to the weekend. early morning could have patchy dense fog where the showers

developed earlier today. into the afternoon tomorrow, it is cool with temperatures mainly in the 50s. so it is a cool finish to the weekend. storm index scale on tuesday, a level 1 system, light scattered showers, minimal rainfall but still winds could be breezy. so it looks like we could a damp morning commute tuesday. accuweather seven-day forecast, chilly tomorrow and dry. we stay dry for monday as well. there's a scattered shower on tuesday. our best bet, guys, for rainfall is coming on wednesday, perhaps a morning shower on thursday, but dry on friday with another chance coming in the morning on saturday. all level 1 storms, light rain here and there but it's nice to see that to start off december. >> seasonal pattern, right? >> oh, yeah, totally. >> all you bears and cardinals out there, you had to wait two extra weeks, but it happened. >> it was supposed to cal's year, right? it was supposed to be. didn't work out that way. last day of the college football season. the pac-12 season came to a close with the 121st big game. there have been plenty of exciting finishes in the heated cross bay rivalry.

now abc 7 sports with mindi bach. >> the ax will stay opt farm for a ninth straight year. cardinals won the 121st game against the bears. shaw, perfect 8-0 in the cross he trip, but just a few hours visit. 237 yards and one touchdown, in the first quarter with a little dump to cameron scarlet. scarlet did the rest. 46 yards. that is his first career receiving touchdown, stanford up 10-0. cal has a pretty good running

back too. patri patrick laird, 19 carries, his longest, 62 yards down the sideline, but cal only able to pick up a field goal on that drive. fourth quarter, bears trailing by a touchdown. dibo one of the best at breaking up passes. incredible, one-handed interception. scarlet one more touchdown to put the game away. cal got into the end zone in garbage time as it drops to stanford 23-13. >> it's big, especially my senior year, making sure we send out the seniors and fifth years on the right thatax tomentum is not important for us right now, it's rest. i need our guys to sleep and about half the team needs to live in the training room for the next couple weeks to see who can be healthy, how many guys are healthy. it's been a long, difficult injury plagued season for us.

quarterback mckinzie milton, ucs going for the 25th straight game. that's darrell henderson, three first half touchdowns including that 62 yarder. memphis led 30-14 at one point. but ucf comes all the way back. the two yard keeper by quarterback mack jr. gives the ninth lead. mack with three rushing touchdowns in a row as ucf storms back to win 56-41. and remains undefeated. and stephen curry is back on the court with the warriors tonight in detroit. right now he has five points and 14 minutes of play. we're going to bring you those highlights coming up after the game, after tonight's 5:00

i didn't know this, a trip to the north pole to meet santa is just a short flight area. some bay area children got the ultimate holiday experience today. united airlines transformed a gate at sfo into a winter wonderland. the plane was also decked out for the fantasy flight, complete with elf, flight attendants, after they landed the kids got to enjoy a variety of games, treats, and visits from special friends. so cute. >> oh, now you know, eric, look at that. >> now i know. and what better place than on an airplane. >> yes, airplane geek yourself. >> who, me? >> not at all. that's it for abc 7 news.
