consecutive hours. >> the 41st president, who was known for his colorful collection of crazy socks, will be laid to rest wearing this pair featuring jets flying into formation. it's a nod to his service in world war ii. abc's emily rau joins us with >> reporter: good morning, maggie and terrell. exactly right, the rotunda will remain open to visitors all night long even at 1:00 a.m. people walking the capitol grounds in washington and standing in line to pay their respects to bush 41. with the sunset befitting the colorful life he lived, the body of former president george h.w. bush arrived at the u.s. capitol. members of his cabinet waiting alongside his family. former first lady laura bush saying what a beautiful night to her husband. then a 21-gun salute before the remains of the 41st president took their place in the capitol rotunda. president trump and first lady melania making their way to the capitol monday night standing ic

the president then saluting as the first lady placed her hand over her heart. tens of thousands of people are expected to wait in line to pay their respects to the 94-year-old, elected president in 1988 and serving one term. a naval aviator shot down in the pacific but rescued, he returned home where barbara pierce was waiting. their marriage would bring six children and stretch more than seven decades until her death earlier this year. >> he is the most decentdecentdt honorable, wonderful -- nobody's ever been as lucky as i've been. i want people to remember him as courageous. i want them to remember him as he is. >> reporter: her wish coming true as americans and lawmakers from both parties put a pause on their differences to celebrate the last president from the greatest generation.

the former president's remains will stay in the rotunda until his state funeral on wednesday. at that service at the national cathedral every living president will attend. he will then return to houston for another service there before being laid to rest next to his wife and daughter. in washington, emily rau, abc news. now back to you. >> emily, thank you. and that's quite a sight to see. again, our thanks to emily. many secret service agents are sharing their stories of president bush. they say he was so considerate that he would stay in washington for christmas eve so that agents could be with their families. >> one agent also remembers how president bush would raid the white house kitchen at 3:00 a.m. for milk and cookies, and he enjoyed greeting tourists so he often insisted on leaving the oval office through the rose garden. >> and then there was this picture from 2013 that shows support for a secret service agent's son battling leukemia shaving his head in solidarity.

>> tomorrow live coverage of the funeral and coming up later, we'll hear from the man who protected president bush and his many skydiving jumps. he told us about the warning he once got from mrs. bush. >> yeah, it's coming up a little later on. breaking news coming in from overseas. the french government is suspending an increase in the gas tax. there have been days of deadly riots. demonstrators angry about the rising prices have clashed with police. even famous landmarks in the city have been vandalized. on average a gallon of gas costs more than $6 in france. the government is now putting that tax increase on hold. and we have new details about the crash of a charter bus carrying a youth football team from memphis. a 9-year-old was killed. dozens were injured, and we're hearing now from one of the survivors. >> confirm there's three critical? >> 10-4 that i know of. >> reporter: tragedy on an arkansas highway in the middle of the night. >> we're still working on getting some of the ones that's trapped out.

>> reporter: this is the aftermath of the bus crash that left dozens of children injured and a third grader dead. >> the injuries have ranged really from injuries to the skull and brain to lots of lacerations, lots of broken bones. >> reporter: police now identifying the boy killed as 9-year-old cameron johnson. >> you just saw heartache. you saw our hearts broken. we saw tears. >> reporter: his sudden death sending shock waves through the school. >> right now focus is just to meet their needs and come alongside them and be prepared to do whatever we can do. >> reporter: now investigators are searching for answers as to why the bus carrying a youth football team on their way home from a game in texas suddenly careened off the interstate just before 3:00 a.m. slamming that a grove of trees. >> everybody was screaming, crying. >> reporter: one of the players on board who was injured in the wreck describes the terrifying scene. >> people were scared and

terrified and i woke up when i heard like a lot of screaming and the coaches were trying to keep everybody calm. >> reporter: the driver was questioned by police who want to know if fatigue played a role but troopers have not yet determined why she lost control. reports indicate the company that owns the bus has had multiple violations in the past including allowing an employee to drive without the proper license. but none of those violations required taking their buses out of service. and the kids on the bus were between 7 and 13 years old. those who were injured are expected to recover. absentee ballots seem to be the focus of a voter fraud investigation in north carolina. a congressional race there is still undecided. unofficial results show republican mark harris leading by over 900 votes but our station in charlotte reports similar signatures have been found on absentee ballots there's raising questions about potential wrongdoing. a worker for the harris campaign looks to be at the center of this investigation.

an alabama man kill the by police at a shopping mall thanksgiving was shot three times in his back side. that's according to an autopsy commissioned by the family of police say an argument among several young men led to gunfire. at first bradford was mistakenly identified as the gunman who injured two people. his family said the 21-year-old was only trying to help. >> it is clear unequivocally without any doubt whatsoever e.j. bradford jr. was shot three times from the back while he was running away. >> my son was murdered by this officer, and that was cowardice. >> authorities do not plan to release video from the shooting until the investigation is complete. the officer who shot bradford is on administrative leave. let's get a look at the weather now on this tuesday morning.

and take a look at this scare. this was on a highway in dallas. a trash can comes flying into a woman's windshield. the can wasn't properly tied down when it flew off the back of a truck. thankfully the woman in that car was not hurt. investigators in costa rica are working to identify a body found near the airbnb where a missing florida woman was staying. carla stefaniak was with friends celebrating her 36th birthday. she stayed for an extra day then disappeared. the owner of the airbnb says stefaniak left with her bags at 5:00 a.m., but her family says she had an uber scheduled to pick her up three hours later and never showed up. officials are now testing what appears to be blood found inside the home where she was staying.

newly released surveillance video shows a small plane crashing just after takeoff in ft. lauderdale. the plane crashed into an autism therapy center bursting into flames. bystanders -- you see them there -- running out of the building. two people on board the cessna were killed. the ntsb is looking into the cause. authorities in california say they caught a dui suspect sleeping in his tesla driving 70 miles per hour down a freeway. police chased the suspect for seven miles. they pulled in front of the car and started slowing down to stop it and say that suspect failed a sobriety test and they believe that he was using the car's autopilot feature. >> want to remind the public to make sure that even though this technology is available, they need to make sure that they know that they are responsible for maintaining control of the vehicle. >> so tesla is saying this, drivers need to stay alert during autopilot. the system provides visual and
