when will they learn, guys? when will they learn? good morning, america. we're going to begin with the celebration of former president george h.w. bush's life and legacy. the nation's 41st president lying in state at the capitol rotunda. that's a live look right now and you see people are lining up again this morning as they did all throughout the night to pay their respects. >> and last night president trump and first lady melania trump also came to pay their respects hours after the late president was transported through the streets of washington to the capitol. >> that was quite a motorcade during the afternoon. crowds gathered outside to watch the casket arrive. you see them there. inside the president's family joined by those he served with in congress and the white house official farewell. our senior national correspondent terry moran starts us off. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. it's such an inspiring scene here, people filing by, paying

their republicans. i just spoke with a family arriving before work, before school, i spoke to the dad. he said pointing to his kids, i wanted them to be inspired and what's really inspiring, the special feeling here is that people are paying tribute not just to president bush's record in office but more to his character as a man. last night under the great dome of the capitol, this solemn presidential tribute. president trump with first lady melania at his side paying their respects to president george herbert walker bush heads bowed, they stood there for minutes. and then one final salute. from the 45th president to the 41st president. the moment capped a day filled with emotion and pageantry as the nation's leaders gathered to honor a president and to remember a good man. george bush's final journey to washington, d.c., began in his home state of texas. his family standing beside him as it began, his casket draped in an american flag. the president's service dog sully also right there with him. his secret service detail on duty one last time.

their final mission for their commander-in-chief carrying him out of the funeral home. it arrived at ellington field. the bush family boarded air force one, renamed special air mission 41, for this exceptional occasion and when it arrived at andrews air force base late afternoon, navy sailors from the "uss george h.w. bush" were waiting, standing at attention. family members waiting silently while the president's casket was taken into a black hearse and the motorcade then travelled through the streets of washington, d.c., arriving at the u.s. capitol at dusk. perfect sunset. the sky stunning streaked with color, nature's pageant. members of the military carrying the casket while a 21-gun salute echoed through the evening. the late president's first-born son, former president george w. bush, somber and strained as he and the rest of the bush clan waited at the top of the steps

to escort their patriarch to the place of honor. the members of the first president bush's administration, including dick cheney, colin powell and his closest friend and secretary of state james baker, the emotions of the moment were etched on their faces. the procession then slowly made its way to the rotunda where the casket was placed on the lincoln catafalque. members of congress and justices of the supreme court were also gathered there and then george herbert walker bush was remembered as a man of character. >> there was a kindness about the man that was evident to everyone who ever met him. >> reporter: as a public servant whose life impacted millions. >> he made contributions to freedom with the fundamental decency that resonates across generations. >> reporter: and as a devoted husband to his beloved wife barbara. >> the patriot who lies before us was blessed with many gifts, but there was no doubt which he prized most of all.

a great love story began at that christmas dance when george bush met barbara pierce. >> reporter: the solemn ceremony was the final public appearance of the day for a family in mourning. you could see the grief of the farewell on the face of the 43rd president. at 7:30 p.m., the public was allowed to enter the capitol to pay their respects, a lone boy scout saluting the president he never knew. a boy scout salute. he would have liked that. president bush didn't like to talk about himself. his mother taught him not to use the big "i" as she said. but the country is talking about him now. there are many ways to be remembered, maybe the best as he is being remembered as a good man, guys. >> that's so true. that is beautiful. thank you, terry. besides his career, a public service, another thing george h.w. bush was known for, his colorful socks. at a celebration in houston people were asked to wear

colorful socks in tribute to him and they came through and we want to show you the socks that the late president will be wearing when he is laid to rest, his spokesman said they pay tribute to his lifetime of service starting as an 18-year-old naval aviator. >> the experience of his life. president trump is set to attend president george h.w. bush's funeral tomorrow. it's no secret that the bush family and president trump have had a tense relationship over the years but thankfully it seems past differences will be set aside and our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce has more on that. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning. well, president trump does have a contentious relationship with the bush family, but throughout this week's proceedings the president is being seen, though, likely largely not heard. the president late last night with the first lady paying that solemn visit here to the capitol, the president offering an extended salute. the first lady with her hand over her heart. the president did not offer any remarks, but in a written statement to congress president trump says president bush, quote, led a life that exemplified what is truly great about america. president trump is expected to attend the funeral tomorrow at

the washington national cathedral though he is not slated to deliver any eulogy. all living presidents will be in attendance there putting president trump in the same room as president obama, president clinton and hillary clinton for the first time since the inauguration, robin. >> all right, mary, thank you. and we will have complete live coverage of the memorials and the tributes, including tomorrow's funeral, at the national cathedral that mary was just talking about. >> yeah, i'll be heading to washington later today. to the white house and new questions this morning for president trump after he publicly attacks his longtime fixer michael cohen for cooperating with the mueller investigation and praises longtime ally roger stone for standing up to the probe. want to bring in cecilia vega and, cecilia, these tweets came in rapid-fire, rapid succession. yesterday. he called for the judge to give michael cohen a full sentence, then praised roger stone for telling me on sunday i will never testify against trump adding, nice to know some people have guts. legal experts analyzing those

tweets say they could be part of an obstruction of justice case. >> reporter: yeah, george, obstruction or possible witness tampering because they say he's sending two different messages. one clear message to those who cooperate, you will be punished and those who refuse to cooperate you will be rewarded. among those who are now publicly sounding this alarm, george conway, the conservative lawyer and, of course, kellyanne conway's husband, has become a frequent critic of president trump. he simply tweeted the federal code for witness tampering, another one, the former acting solicitor general under president obama. he tweeted, this is genuinely looking like witness tampering, george. some are saying this might be something the democrats take up when at the take control of the house in less than a month now. >> they may do that. another move from robert mueller today. he's going to file a sentencing memo on the president's former national security adviser michael flynn. who pleaded guilty last year. >> reporter: he's been cooperating ever since with the mueller team. a sentencing memo that could detail exactly how much flynn has been cooperating behind closed doors. and the reason this is

significant is because, as we've been saying for months now, mueller's team has been remarkably tight-lipped. we really don't know what they have as it relates to russia, but this perhaps could pull back the curtains a little bit on their investigation, how much flynn is cooperating. a lot could change today, george. >> it's been one of the biggest mysteries, thanks very much. we are going to move on to that dangerous storm bringing in new threats to california's fire zone. major rain expected to hit, sparking fears of mudslides and flooding. ginger is tracking the storm and has the latest on its path. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning, michael. especially in those burn scar areas. but first, let me update you from taylorville, illinois, 1 of 26 tornados that made their way through. that is the number one day in december ever recorded in recorded history for the state of illinois and most tornadoes they've ever seen. so an update there, that was 155-mile-per-hour ef-3 and new storm out in the pacific now. california on alert. really the whole state because the northern half gets it

tomorrow night and, by thursday, it's really settling into southern. we're talking about up to 3 inches of rain in those mudslide possibilities on burn scars. robin? >> thank you. now to that tragic bus crash in arkansas that left one child dead and 45 others injured. the driver telling police she lost control on the way home from a youth football tournament. marcus moore has the latest. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: robin, good morning. several students were if in the hospital overnight, still receiving treatment for their injuries and this morning, we are hearing the 911 call that captured the chaos after the crash. a battered and twisted charter bus resting on its side along this arkansas highway. >> a bus, a bus just flipped. >> reporter: it is a key piece of evidence as investigators try to figure out what went wrong in this horrific crash that injured more than 40 children and their chaperones and killed a third grader. this morning, we're learning his name. 9-year-old kameron johnson. >> just to confirm there's three critical?

>> 10-4, that i know of. >> reporter: near benton, arkansas. >> everybody was screaming, crying, and i was scared because everybody was bleeding and i had blood all over my t-shirt. >> reporter: that bus sliding and tumbling just off interstate 30. just before 3:00 in the morning. some of the injured children and adults stuck in the wreckage. >> we're still working on getting some of the ones trapped out. >> reporter: the injured flooding an area hospital for treatment. >> lots of lacerations, broken bones. >> reporter: the bus was carrying members of a tennessee youth football team that just played a championship game in dallas. the team was headed home to memphis when the tragic crash happened. >> it's an eye opener. it's probably going to hurt the traveling experience for the rest of these kids' lives. they may not want to send their kids on another bus. >> reporter: this morning, vestigators say they're including whether fatigue played a role in the deadly crash. government records show that one of the company's buses was in a

that woman was last known to be. this morning, new footage of what is now a crime scene in costa rica. >> second day, hot springs. >> reporter: stefaniak, who was on a week-long vacation celebrating her 36th birthday with friends -- >> welcome me to my birthday. >> reporter: -- stayed in the country an extra day alone at this airbnb after dropping her sister-in-law off at the airport. her family desperate to find her. her brother, carlos, flying to costa rica retracing her final known steps coming here to the home she stayed in looking for any clues. >> this is weird that she didn't message anybody. it was her birthday. you know what i mean? that's when it hit me there's something wrong here. >> reporter: he repeatedly looked at the final text from his sister before her phone died. stefaniak texting that she was too tired to go out and it's raining hard, power went off, super sketchy. stefaniak's family says she checked into her flight home at

some point and that the owner of the airbnb told them she left with her bags the next morning at 5:00 a.m. but her family says she scheduled an uber to pick her up at 8:30 in the morning to take her shopping. she didn't show up. >> her flight wasn't until 1:30. she's only 20 minutes or 30 minutes from the airport. so this story doesn't make sense. >> reporter: officials say they will test what appears to be blood flood inside the home. they haven't named any suspects yet. we do know that she had devices with her. now to an alligator attack. an 85-year-old man was bitten on the foot, then rushed to the hospital. victor oquendo is in miami with the very latest and, victor, the gator was caught with a shoe in its mouth. >> reporter: that's right, michael. good morning. this was a close call but thankfully that man will be okay. wildlife officials are confident they caught the alligator that attacked especially after finding that white sneaker inside its mouth. these trappers are about to pull

that thrashing nine-foot alligator out of this central florida lake. look closely as it gets closer to shoe. inside its mouth, the gator releases what it took from its victim, a white sneaker left bobbing in the water. >> attack at big cypress boulevard. be advised he's actively getting there. >> reporter: it took three men to pin down the gator. florida official wildlife says it bit an 85-year-old man on the foot behind his home at a retirement community. >> his wife heard him screaming supposedly and i guess his neighbor came to his rescue but they found the shoe, the white sneaker the guy had on. >> reporter: that man taken to the hospital in stable condition. experts say encounters like these are on the rise. >> as the alligator populations continue to grow, and we continue to develop in these beautiful waterfront areas, you're going to have these conflicts. >> reporter: in the last few months alarming alligator sightings and deadly attacks. this summer, a florida woman walking her dogs was dragged

into a lake and killed by a 12-foot alligator. also in south carolina, this massive 12-foot gator is frequently spotted strolling through a golf course and this seven-foot alligator seen scaling a fence in a backyard. look at what was lurking on a doorstep in louisiana. just because a gator is trapped does not mean the danger is over. this alligator knocking one officer to the ground and whipping another with its tail as it's being loaded onto the back of a pickup. attacks like this recent one are rare. florida fish and wildlife hoping to learn more about what happened here later when they interview the victim. michael? >> all right. thank you. boy, sure scares you about those gators. >> sure does. >> gotta be careful out there. now to a hero trooper who is lucky to be alive after a terrifying accident. want to you take a look. that's florida highway patrol trooper mathil patel. standing with another man at the scene of an accident when a car is rear ended, spins out of control right towards them both, and the trooper pushing the man

good morning. she's claiming she was recorded by a hotel employee. she does not know who this person is and she says there's evidence proving she is not the only victim here. this morning, she is scared for her life. this morning, one of the biggest hotel chains in the world is facing a $100 million lawsuit after a woman claims one of its unidentified employees filmed her in the shower in order to blackmail and extort her. the woman whose face abc news is not showing says she fears for her safety after she says she was recorded without her consent while taking a shower in hilton's hampton inn & suites in downtown albany in 2015. in a newly filed lawsuit, the jane doe alleges she did not realize she was recorded until this september when she says she received an e-mail with a link to her shower video on an x-rated website. her full name and the video's title and a message reading, this is you, right? >> all i could think is my life

is over. if this gets out my life is absolutely over. >> reporter: according to the complaint the next day the extorter threatened to post videos of her on other sites unless she sent a new private video in exchange. "you have until midnight to send me something good or i will post videos, your name, info everywhere then i send to people you know. you can enjoy being famous." she alleges that when she didn't respond over the next couple of weeks the extorter posted the video on more sites and then created an e-mail address using her name and e-mailed the video to her friends, family and colleagues, along with this message that read in part, dear friends, i am trying to recruit some friends to help me out a friend's art project for which i got to be the model. it's a little daring. let me know what you think. >> it was just absolutely traumatizing because these are people i went to law school with. they're friends. they're co-workers and they were sent a link to what looks like

an e-mail i sent. >> reporter: she alleges the person then sent another e-mail demanding she send thousands of dollars to a bitcoin address in exchange for pulling the video. "you are you're buying peace, easy, right." >> you don't go into a hotel room and think something like this can happen to you and it happened to me. if we can spare one more person from this happening to, then it would be worth it. >> reporter: she alleges she might not be the only victim. >> we've investigated extensively as far as we can go without hilton's help at this point and that investigation has revealed that there is at least another victim. >> reporter: a spokesperson for the hotel responded overnight telling abc news, the safety and security of our guests is our highest priority. we will continue to work with the authorities to discover the perpetrator and see that she/he is held accountable. this particular hilton hotel in albany says they recently went through a complete renovation. they did not find any recording devices. a spokesperson for hilton hotels

says they were alerted to this story yesterday through our reporting. they told us they take the well-being of all of their guests very seriously. they're committed to supporting the independent ownership and management of the property as they investigate, respond and cooperate with any law enforcement investigations. >> okay, so, people watching this morning and wanting to know is there something that they can do to make sure this doesn't happen to them. >> we can't live in fear but when you enter the hotel room do a quick sweep. look for things that have been tampered with and think about where you would hide something and go with your gut. you can buy an rf detector. it looks like a walkie-talkie. it detects any wi-fi signals and if you look through the view finder and turn the light on it will detect any camera lenses that might be in the room. you want to try it. take a look through it. you can look at our camera right there. you see our camera lens. >> i do. i see justin. >> i don't how to turn it off,

though. >> where can you find this? >> you can find them online. >> hilton didn't know about it until we were reporting on it? >> uh-huh. >> wow. >> thank you. and we're going to switch gears to a 9-year-old who is learning to fight for his rights. overnight, he got his colorado town to lift its ban on snowball fights. adrienne bankert is here with the story. good morning, adrienne. >> good morning. what's more synonymous with winter than snowmen and snowball fights but in one town it was against the law for almost a century but not anymore. wherever there is snow, there are snowball fights. from police officers playing with kids. this epic new york city winter war. or a little playful fun on capitol hill. but in severance, colorado, for nearly 100 years throwing snowballs has been illegal until today.

9-year-old dane best wanted to change the law and he did. >> he just said, mom, i would like you to go change the law and i said, i'm not going to fight to change the law. if you feel this is something you want changed, then let's take the steps and see if it's something you could do. >> reporter: dane had 20 of his classmates sign a petition and gave a presentation to the town board on why it should be legal to throw snowballs. >> i call this regular meeting to order. >> reporter: on monday night the severance town board voted unanimously to lift the ban. >> you just changed the law, buddy. [ applause ] >> reporter: it's only fitting dane threw out the very first lawful snowball in celebration. and severance board members say they're hoping to do a big giant snowball fight and have a special day for dane for working so well with local government. >> and i'm sure the bowtie helped. he's the first kid in 100 years who decided to do this? >> i know it's kind of surprising. over the past 60 years the town board invited kids to come down and to learn about lawmaking so

matt gutman is in l.a. with the story. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, george. according to police, he was not only asleep, but he was drunk and as you mentioned, that tesla autopilot apparently was working. this is the sobering end to what could have been a deadly collision on a california highway. >> redwood city unit is behind a vehicle that's in autopilot, it's a tesla. they're currently attempting to bring to a stop. >> reporter: according to police, the 45-year-old driver was speeding down the road at 70 miles per hour in his tesla. >> the officers pulled up next to the vehicle and the officer observed the driver appeared to be asleep at the wheel. they tried to get the driver to wake up and pull over. according to the california highway patrol the officers finally maneuvered their vehicle in front gradually slowing down. the autopilot feature reacting

and bringing the vehicle to a stop without causing an accident. you could see that driver placed under arrest on suspicion of dui. tesla founder elon musk tweeting that the company is looking into what happened here. the company sharing days ago in a video that it had surpassed 1 billion miles of autopilot driving. indicating this kind of driving is likely to be part of the new norm on america's highways. in this case the autopilot likely saved the driver's life and others, but experts warn drivers should not become complacent. >> we want to remind the public to make sure that even though this technology is available they need to make sure that they know that they are responsible for maintaining control of the vehicle. >> reporter: now, according to tesla says there are six intentional steps to activate that autopilot and it's really only designed for highway use so it's not like you can get into the car, punch in your coordinates, pass out and hope to end up where you want it to go. >> tesla says you're supposed to keep your hand on the wheels at all times.

national correspondent, terry moran. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning. it is a day for the people to come and pay their respects and we've seen them. former staffers, old colleagues remembering a man they admired, president trump and the first lady melania trump arriving last night joining the queue and standing in silent prayer for a couple of minutes before president trump raised a presidential salute to his predecessor. it has been a week and will be over the next couple of days of this beautiful ceremony beginning last night with that dusk arrival. that 21-gun salute as the president was laid under the rotunda. the bush clan all gathered. his six children, grandchildren, great grandchildren. an emotional time for them, of course, especially perhaps for george w. bush, the 43rd president. theirs was a special bond. i once asked him what he got from his dad that helped him the most in the oval office and he said, unconditional love. i knew my whole life i was unconditionally loved by my dad and that helped him a lot.

this ceremony will continue with that service at the national cathedral. president bush, george w. bush, will speak in memory of his father. that will be tomorrow and then he will be flown home to houston where he will be buried by his presidential library. >> a home he chose. >> you know how we're feeling. just imagine how his family is handling with such grace. we have now the storms that are across the country. rain out west sparking more fears of mudslides in california and historic tornadoes in the midwest. ginger, those tornadoes were really destructive. >> really stunning update actually on those tornadoes in illinois. 26 is the final count as far as how many they had. that's the most they've ever seen on a december day in the state of illinois. the damage you're seeing from taylorville was upgraded to an ef-3. winds of 155 miles per hour. more rotation happening

over the pacific ocean. that's going to impact california tonight through wednesday for the bay area. you can see up to a half inch of rain but southern california wednesday night into thursday, burn scar areas balded by the wildfires, you get a half inch up to 3 inches of rain, you can easily see mudslides and debris flow. up to a foot of snow in the sierras. now to an important -- to important news for dog owners. some dry food has been recalled. you can see them here and the brands have the same manufacturer. fda reports these dog foods contain approximately 70 times the intended amount of vitamin d which is an essential nutrient for dogs but these high amounts can be deadly. there have been no reports of illnesses or deaths so far, but the fda says that it is developing -- the situation is developing and more recalls may be announced and you can find more information about this recall on the fda website. so before you just feed your dogs what have you in the

bottle. >> he will have a wake-up and wonder how do i do this without that help and need somebody to come in. >> reporter: baby sleep boss telling us for night one give him half of what he gets for his 2:30 a.m. wake-up. then take the bottle away completely on night two. it's going to be tough. >> what if you move in and do all this stuff? >> reporter: her advice for miles' cries for the bottle -- >> i would go in every ten minute, you can up to him and you can just repeat that process every ten minutes until he's asleep. >> reporter: night one of sleep training, after miles' bedtime bottle i follow her advice and read him a book to break up his association with the bottle and sleep. later -- [ crying ] >> now i have to sit in my room and check on him every ten minutes. i feel guilty, but i know this has to happen. i follow dana's advice waiting to go in to give miles his bottle. he soothes himself and falls back asleep without it. when i checked in with dana -- >> sometimes we get off easy on

night one and night two is the harder night. >> reporter: night two, 3:43 a.m., i had to go in to soothe him. that just makes him angrier. ben tries too. >> he's been up for almost 45 minutes and about a half hour of pretty intense screaming. time to check in again with the baby sleep boss. >> what did he sound like? >> it sounded like crying like a baby dinosaur. >> crying like a baby dinosaur. >> he's made it two nights in a row with no bottle so that should be the worst of it. >> reporter: night three, miles stirs a little at the usual time but he falls back asleep. a total of 11 hours. dana warns there can be a regression on night five but miles keeps sleeping 11 hours a night soothing himself back even if he wakes up. this is pretty exciting. i slept through the night.

[ applause ] >> it was really pretty easy and we shot that a few weeks ago. i'm happy to report miles is still sleeping that 11 hours a night. a study was recently released about kids saying they all vary so babies vary but this just works for our family. others have different routines that work for them and want to put that out there. also i've been working with dana. he does sleep 11 hours. it starts at 6:00 p.m. and ends at 5:00 a.m. so we're going to work that back. >> it must feel good to hit these milestones. there can be setbacks after sleep training. >> any time daylight savings time, there are little things you can do when they're sick and crawling, milestones but there are tips dana has so check her out. >> get some sleep, ginger. coming up, margot robbie is here live.

raised the roof at blue smoke. i got to tell you. the v foundation is close to my heart. i've been on the board of directors for many years. last night i was honored to be at the second annual dinner and that's jean-paul, the chef, jean-paul, boy, that fried chicken he made, ooh, so good. it's about thriving after cancer treatment which isn't easy because there are so many long-term complications. and lara spencer was there last night. so many people there, james goldston, the head of abc news and that's my little posse there but once the treatment is over there's so much going on and there is ongoing research funds that will help millions of cancer patients have a better quality of life in the long run become thrivers, not just survivors. there's more than 16 millions thrivers. there are some wonderful v

members here. julie, i got to tell you, thank you to julie. make a hit song. but be honest, how are you in the kitchen? >> oh, i'm awful. but i learned a lot on this show. i mean it's just incredible. to be around those guys, they're amazing bakers, and to work with obviously other people, i've learned quite a bit. but i think i'm better at tasting than i am at baking. >> tasting. >> we loved it. it's just such a warm show. the contestants on the show worked really hard. they're quite competitive and it was a bit intense but it's a good, fun show and we love it. [ applause ] >> that was quite a fan girl moment you just had with margot robbie. >> i know, both i and margot just met and we were both screaming. she's wonderful, isn't she? >> she's beautiful and to have that kind of connection and she was so excited when she did the tease to you -- >> she just said she used to dress up as baby spice, as me

and so, yeah, that's always really sweet to hear. >> are you ready for the holidays? >> my favorite holiday ever and i kind of go a bit overboard so i'm in this perfect place for christmas. but, yeah, we have trees all over the house. we all -- me and my kids decorate and have music on and drink mulled wine. so it's such a lovely time. >> you go caroling. >> we go caroling. we sing, yes, we do everything and it's a lovely time. we're very family based. so it's that time to sit together, play board games, you know, eat great food, it's really important to us. >> beautiful. >> you have a lot more singing coming up. going back on tour. >> i do, yes. [ applause ] so i'm so excited about going back on tour and doing this because i love the girls and we have so much fun on stage but i'm also doing it because my kids have never seen me perform with the spice girls, so i'm doing it for them.
