greeted by george w. bush and his wife laura. mr. trump put his hand on the former president's back a few times. the bush family is staying at the blair house ahead of the elder bush's estate funeral tomorrow. thousands of people continue to stream into the capitol to pay final respects to the former president. president bush's body has been lying in state at the rotunda since yesterday afternoon. bush's flag-draped casket will remain in the rotunda until tomorrow morning when a state funeral will be held. we'll have more in a live report from washington coming up at 4:30. former senator bob dole paid his respects today. the 95-year-old was helped out of his wheelchair so he could salute the president's casket in the rotunda. bush was the last world war ii

veteran president. he said his passing marks the end of an era. the memorial service in washington is set to begin at 8:00. abc news will have live coverage beginning at 7:00 a.m. we'll be streaming it on our website, abc7news.com and on the abc 7 news app. president bush died on the eve of world aids day but is criticized for doing little to end the negative attitudes and beliefs about people with aids. leanne melendez spoke with people in san francisco who lived in the height of the epidemic. >> reporter: people often say one should never speak ill of the dead. for those who lived in the predominantly gay castro district during the bush presidency, it's hard not to criticize his legacy. >> just walking on this street in those days, it was almost a ghost town, but the coasts were living, were still alive because there were so many people that were sick. >> reporter: san francisco was

the epicenter of the aids epidemic and ronald reagan was president. bush was reagan's vice president, and even though aids had already affected thousands of people by the mid 1980s, reagan didn't even utter the word aids publicly until 1987. to his credit in 1990, bush signed the americans with disabilities act which also protected people with hiv. that same year he signed the ryan white care act, the largest federally funded program for people living with aids. but health care providers like paul volberding say bush failed to take a leadership role. >> it was especially hard in those days for people at that level to talk about aids but they should have. i think it could have really helped with the sense of stigma that our patients suffered with at that time. >> reporter: in fact, in 1991 president bush said changing one's behavior was a way to control the spread of aids.

he later expressed that being gay was not a normal lifestyle. >> kind of aligned with the people that thought aids was god's punishment. there was very little sympathy. >> reporter: when bush once called for a kind her, gentler nation, many in this community say he missed the opportunity to also ask for compassion towards gays and those living with aids. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. a tweet by president trump sent the stock market reeling over concerns of a new trade war with china. in a series of tweets, the president said the trade deal with china will happen but if not, he wrote, i am tariff man. it comes days after president trump and chinese president xi jinping came to an agreement to ease the trade war. both countries have until march to avoid a spike of 10% to 25%

of u.s. tariffs on chinese goods. the dow jones industrial average dropped 799 points. the nasdaq fell 283 and the s&p 500 slid 90 points. today the millennium tower association filed a permit application with the city and county of san francisco to retrofit leaning and sinking millen yes, ma'am tower. abc 7 news reporter melly woodrow is more on what seems to be a pricey plan. melanie. >> reporter: oh, it is. if you don't live in millennium tower, here with why you should care about this proposed fix. the structural engineer who designed it said there will likely be lane cleez yurs on mission street and fremont street. construction could take a year and a half. the lileaning and sinking mel l tower is one step closer to a makeover. understandably ronald tamburger is the structural engineer who came up with the proposed fix.

the reid hillview airport. it's located next to cunningham park and the east ridge mall. people both for and against closing the park packed today's county supervisors meeting. activists call it a playground for the rich and want to replace it with low income housing. >> it's just not a good fit. it only benefits the small number of pilots that fly out of that airport. >> it's a shame because it really is a valuable transportation piece of the infrastructure for this valley. >> emergency planners say the airport plays a critical role for the airport to fight wildfires. it can't close for at least 12 years due to future funding commitments. the first ever trade delegation to end yeah, assembly

today marks the first anniversary of the thomas fire in ventura and santa barbara counties. at the time it was the largest wildfire in modern california history. more than 530 homes were destroyed and two people, including a firefighter died. hundreds gathered last night outside ventura city hall with cappedals to remember the disaster. a north bay neighborhood is on edge after a downed power line set fire to trees. it happened in the diamond a neighborhood of sonoma. it's making neighbors take a closer look at fire safety. abc 7's katie utehs shows us the video. >> reporter: you can hear the crackle -- >> i walked out. stood here for a minute and saw the multiple smoking trees, dialed 911. >> reporter: bart hanson lives in the diamond a neighborhood. his video shows a power line

igniting tree branches early monday morning. >> the interesting thing was is that there was no wind. it was still like it is now. obviously just tired wires i guess. >> reporter: the neighborhood lost power for several hours before pg&e finished repairs. neighbors say the water pumps here are lech atlantic, so if the power goes out, so do the hydrants. the incident is sparking fresh debate about tree clearing. overhead power lines and evacuations as images of cars stranded in the camp fire still feel fresh. >> i don't think it's nearly well enough maintained. >> reporter: richard cooper has lived in the community of some 200 homes for more than 50 years. >> when they get fires like we've had, i don't know where a safe place would be. >> reporter: cal fire says it's not evacuating via grove street, the only access to diamond a. >> we always say we're one way in and one way out. >> reporter: instead, residents should evacuate to the diamond a

community center where a large open space provides protection. cal fire is cutting fire breaks in the area. pg&e is working on tree clearing in extreme fire-risk areas of the county first, then will work in elevated risk areas like diamond a. in sonoma, katie utehs, abc 7 news. it survived the north bay fire, but not the downturn in business that followed. carrows restaurant shut down this afternoon. it comes 45 years to the day that restaurant opened on cleveland avenue. it was founded in santa clara back in 1970. its most recent parent company was bought out by an oregon firm in september. the hottest housing market in the state could well be chico. in the past three weeks more than 200 homes have been purchased in that city, many of them for 50 to $100,000 above the asking price. chico is just 15 miles from paradise which was largely destroyed by the camp fire.

the fire level more than 13,000 homes there. tonight the chico city council will try to ease the housing crunch. it will discuss loosening restrictions on granting units. santa clara county firefighters who put their lives on the line to battle the fire are continuing to help. their new mission is to brew a special batch of beer to benefit the victim relief form. amanda del cos still low has the story from rock bottom brewery. >> reporter: beer to help butte county fire victims. it's what's on tap tuesday for these off duty firefighters. >> we're working with rock bottom brewery. >> reporter: a welcomed change of pace for these firefighters. >> they were right in the middle of it, saw what happened. they saw what those poor people went through and what this town went through and they're really

yellows and oranges representing the heaviest rainfall. the heaviest rain is still offshore. it's getting wet over land areas in the south bay as well. let me give you a closer look. you can see heavy downpours just off the khost line of san mateo county. a lot of wet weather in the peninsula right now. light showers, mainly light to moderate showers and cloudy conditions everywhere. this is the few from sutro tower looking westward. should see rain arriving in the city pretty soon. we have low 50s at oakland, mountain view, san jose, morganville. half moon bay is the warm spot right now. current temperatures in the north bay 57 at santa rosa. shifting eastward just a bit, vacaville 53, livermore down to 49 degrees right now. here is the view from mt. tam, looking at cloudy skies again. we don't see rainfall here.

first alert forecast features rainy and windy overnight, scattered showers tomorrow morning and a dryer pattern later this week. during the overnight hours as the showers continue to fall, low temperatures in the mid to upper 40s, just a little chillier in the north bay valleys where lows will drop to the low 40s. our storm ranks two on the storm impact scale, moderate intensity producing showers and scattered downpours tonight and early tomorrow. highest rainfall totals along the coast, wind gusts of 20 to 30 miles per hour with occasionally higher gusts in the higher elevations. starting at 5:00, more areas of showers developing, pockets of moderate to heavy downpours pushing into the north baby 5:00 this afternoon. we'll see more areas of moderate to heavy downpours at that time. heaviest rain, looks like it will arrive about 10:00 or a little after ten and then into the overnight hours we go. we'll see the storm breaking up

into scattered showers. there could be isolated downpours as the scattered showers break up, and into the morning commute we'll see less widespread rain. there will certainly be wet spots in the pavement and continued gusty wind until later in the morning when the storm starts to weaken and taper off into the morning hours. not much of a range tomorrow, mainly mid to upper 50s about everywhere. we may see a couple locations in the south bay topping out at 60 degrees. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. by tomorrow the storm will rank only one on the storm impact scale. scattered howers mainly earlier in the day. we'll see partial clearing later in the day. lingering clouds on thursday, mostly sunny skies on friday and saturday. sunday we have another storm coming in in the nighttime hours, continuing into monday morning. that storm will rank one on the storm impact scale. we'll have just partly cloudy conditions on tuesday. tonight, look for occasional downpours. if you're going out, you need to cover up. pretty windy at times. >> thank you, spencer.

the san jose sharks will soon be getting a new rival in the pacific northwest. today nhl commissioner gary bettman announced the board of governors unanimously approved adding a franchise in seattle. it prompted this celebration at a watch party in seattle including an ecstatic guy, as you see, in a sharks jersey. the new team will begin play in 2021 to allow time for renovations to the arena. producer jerry bruckheimer is one of the team's owners. a classic christmas song continues to make waves today after radio stations band it because of its suggestive

his team must file a memo recommending sentencing for lopez has more. former >> reporter: sentencing day for michael flynn is set for december 18, more than a year after he pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi, cooperating with special counsel robert mueller's investigation ever since. today is the deadline for mueller's team to submit a memo to the judge recommending sentencing for flynn. that memo expected to shed light on how much flynn has cooperated with the investigation and whether he may have provided any information on president trump. >> michael flynn was part of the campaign at critical moments and the white house early on. >> reporter: flynn was a close campaign adviser to trump and then national security adviser before having to resign and pleaded guilty to the fbi about being in contact with russian officials today there's no information released about whether his level of cooperation

has met special counsel's satisfaction. >> mueller has put things out in legal filings before. he hasn't provided that many public updates around this investigation. >> reporter: as far as what's in store for flynn, federal guidelines recommend zero to six months in prison. there's even the possibility of probation. and mule ir's memo is expected to influence that sentencing. linda lopez, abc news, new york. the fbi's investigating a major hack of the national republican congressional committee in the run-up to the 2018 election. according to a story on politico, an intruder breached the computeers and accessed e-mail accounts of the committee which is the fund-raising arm for house republicans. reportedly the e-mail accounts of four top republicans were monitored for several months. the fbi is investigating if the cyber attack was conducted by a foreign agent. it could be the strongest indication yet that former vice president joe biden may run for president in 2020. during a book tour stop in montana, biden said, quote, i

think i'm the most qualified person in the country to be president. he said the issues facing the nation today including foreign policy and the plight of the middle class are the same ones he's been working on for a lifetime. biden says he'll make a final decision within the next two months. one of the president's most vocal critics announced he will not run for president in 2020. michael avenatti represents adult film actress stormy daniels in her alleged relationship with the president. avenatti was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and could face misdemeanor charges. another ride sharing app is trying to break into the u.s. >> this one is different. how you can negotiate your fare with the driver. i'm spencer christian.

aggressive push into emerging countries. they announced a mini bus service in cairo, egypt. uber ceo announced the service today. he hopes to add tract egyptians into ride sharing and away from cars on cairo's crowded streets. uber is also investing more than $100 million into its customer support center in cairo. a russian company is taking on uber in new york. the app is called indriver already operating in 11 countries. it works like this. a user enters their destination. the app shows a suggested fare which the user can accept or counter. drivers can negotiate the prices as well. drivers can still make a profit because it only charges a 5% to 10% commission. uber takes up to 25% of the fare. rain has arrived.

realize she was recorded until this september when she says she received an e-mail with a link to the video. the message reading, this is you, right? >> all i could think was my life is over. if this gets out, my life is absolutely over. >> reporter: according to the complaint the next day, the extorter threatened to post videos of her on other sites unless she sent a new private video in exchange. you have until midnight to send me something good or i will post videos, your name, your info everywhere, then i send to people you know. you can enjoy being famous. she alleges when she didn't respond over the next couple weeks, the extorter posted the video on more sites and then created an e-mail address and uses her name and e-mailed the video to friends, colleagues along with this message saying, dear friends, i'm trying to recruit some friends to help out

a friend's art project. it's a little daring. >> it's traumatizing. these are people i went to law school with. they're friends, co-workers, and they're sent a link to what looks like an e-mail i sent. >> she alleges the person then sent another e-mail demanding she send thousands of dollars to a bitcoin address in exchange for pulling the video. you're bying peace. easy, right? >> you don't go into a hotel room thinking something like this will happen to you. it happened to me. if we can spare one more person, that would make it worth it. >> reporter: she alleges in the complaint she might not be the only victim. >> we've investigated extensively as far as we can go without hilton's help and that investigation reveals that there is at least another victim. >> reporter: a spokesperson for the hotel responded overnight telling abc news the safety and security of our

we'll continue to investigate and see that he, she is accountable. >> the how tell underwent a complete renovation and during that time no recording devices of any kind were uncovered. marriott is dealing with a massive hack that could expose the data of 500 million people. >> michael finney has more. >> a lot of pressure put on the hotel. marriott already promised to give customers identity theft monitoring services after that massive data breach. but now it is going one step further. the hotel chain says it will pay for new passports for those affected by the hack on its computers. the passport numbers of some 327 million people may have been exposed in the breach of marriott's starwood reservation system. marriott says it will reimburse customers the $110 passport fee
