president trump as undocumented immigrants even making his bed and doing his laundry. why they're speaking out now. plus, back on the menu. the changes being made to school lunches nationwide. good news overnight for the u.s. auto industry. the revival now planned in detroit. and scared of the queen? one boy's hilarious reaction when queen elizabeth enters the room. and good morning, everybody. we start with what a lot of people are going to be talking about, breaking news out of hollywood. actor and comedian kevin hart has now stepped down as host of the academy awards. >> his decision came just a short time after he dismissed the outcry over some anti-gay tweets he sent in the past. abc's emily rau has been following the story all morning. it was quite a shock for us when we heard about it this morning. what's the latest? >> reporter: yes, people were just celebrating when he had

made this announcement but you may remember back in 2012 when the producer of the oscars brett ratner, he stepped down a couple of days after making a gay slur. he was co-hosting or paired with the host eddie murphy but this situation really getting people talking in part because the comments and questions from kevin hart were made nearly a decade ago. the fallout came fast and hard. just two days after he was named host of the oscars calling it the opportunity of a lifetime on social media, kevin hart is stepping down. >> i just got a call from the academy and that call basically said, kevin, apologize for your tweets of old or we're going to have to move on and fine another host. >> reporter: in the past his standup material often included jokes about homosexuality. several of his comments and tweets deemed homophobic. >> that was the past. the reason why it's the past is because i've addressed this several times. it's not the first time it's

come up. i've addressed it. >> reporter: in his initial post about the controversy on thursday, hart pushed back saying people change and grow and that he is in a different place than when he posted those tweets eight years ago. >> if you want to hold people to a position where they always have to justify or explain their past, then do you. i'm the wrong guy, man. >> reporter: but overnight announcing in a pair of tweets, i have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's oscars. this is because i do not want to be a distraction and going on to say i'm sorry that i hurt people. now, the academy has yet to respond or name a new host for the oscars. they air on abc on february 24th. and hart also said that his goal is to bring people together, not tear us apart. terrell and maggie. >> all right. we'll wait to see what happens next. emily rau, thank you so much. the other big story is the weather. >> a dangerous storm has already

turned deadly in california triggering mudslides and causing a plane to skid off a runway and now a state of emergency has been declared as people in the plains and across the south brace for snow, ice and flooding. this morning, the powerful storm on the move. heavy rains flooding streets in southern california turning roads into rivers. downpours are also hammering vulnerable areas burned by wildfires forcing thousands to evacuate. >> that mountain burns, the mud comes down. this is about what always happens. >> reporter: mud and debris flows raced through streets shutting down the pacific coast highway in malibu. just north of los angeles, cars were stranded for hours after snow and ice shut down interstate 5 thursday. one person was killed in a crash. meanwhile, off san diego, heavy seas rocked this sailboat like a bath toy. the coast guard raced in pulling the crew to safety. back on land, a terrifying landing for people on the

southwest jet skidding off a slick runway in burbank plowing into a crushable runway safe barrier which stopped the plane from crashing into a fence and onto the highway. >> mud started hitting the windows and then you could smoke and water, and i started noticing the plane going sideways. >> visibility was only a mile when it made its descent in heavy rain. >> the pilot came on the radio and said, hey, i just want to let you know that the runway, burbank is kind of short. it's rainy and so i'm going to brake hard. >> reporter: many airlines are waving rebooking fees as it marches into texas, the plains and all the way to north carolina by sunday. >> we've seen mudslides and now that moisture is moving east and we're going to freeze some of it. major winter weather impacts on the way. >> reporter: oklahoma has already declared a state of emergency and now tulsa is scrambling to reschedule its christmas parade. >> in the 92-year history, the parade has only been canceled once during world war ii. >> the big concern now is

the snow and ice in parts of the plains, missouri and eventually north carolina. we'll have the forecast in just a moment. could be another jittery day on wall street. the government releases the jobs report and the market is coming off a wild day thursday. the dow lost nearly 800 points but bounced back when hearing that the fed may slow down interest rate increases. president trump also tweeted china's confident a trade deal can be reached within 90 days but there is new tension because of the arrest of a top chinese tech executive in canada at the request of the u.s. she's accused of trying to evade sanctions in iran. china is demanding she be released. president trump's expected to announce his pick for attorney general as soon as next week. he reportedly intends to nominate william barr who's held the post before during the first bush administration. if confirmed barr would oversee the russia investigation but there are concerns about his views on the probe including his criticism of special counsel robert mueller in an opinion piece in which he defended

the firing of fbi director james comey. and the president's expected to nominate state department spokeswoman heather nauert to be the next ambassador to the u.n. replacing nikki haley. she was previously a reporter at fox news and abc news. she'll need be to confirmed by the senate. five u.s. marines still missing overnight because of that midair collision near japan. they were on board a refueling plane that collided with a fighter jet and then plunged into the pacific. the two-person fighter crew but was found but only one of them survived. that is part of a troubling trend in the past five years. the accident rate for u.s. warplanes has jumped by 39%. well, it's time now for a closer look at your weather forecast for this friday. good morning. california finally getting the chance to dry out here as the old low pressure system is going to work its way off toward the east and create problems. friday into saturday, right through the central portion of the nation. we're talking about icing as

that rendition of the lord's prayer by reba mcentire drew former president bush to tears at his father's funeral in houston. a special train carrying the casket was taken on a 70-mile journey to his presidential library. thousands of people lined the tracks to pay their respects. the 41st president was honored with a 21-gun salute and the family then gathered for a private burial and he was laid to rest next to his beloved barbara and their daughter robin. well now to disturbing new allegations about sexual misconduct at cbs. "the new york times" reports that investigators have concluded the network was justified in firing "60 minutes" executive jeff fager and the report cites a culture of inappropriate behavior dating back decades. according to "the times," the network is still paying millions to a woman who claims legendary producer john hewitt sexually assaulted her and ruined her career. a change on the menu

at schools around the country. the trump administration is finalizing a plan to roll back regulations championed by michelle obama. that means schools are now allowed to offer more flavored milk options like chocolate milk and sodium restrictions will not go into effect. officials say they're eliminating unnecessary government regulations. well, a california chemistry teacher is behind bars arrested for forcibly cutting a student's hair. the incident at a high school appeared this week. 52-year-old gieszinger sings "the star-spangled banner" as she tries to cut hair. it's all part of a bizarre scene. now she was later arrested accused of corporal a child. her husband says that this is totally out of her character. >> i'm trying to figure out myself. so i don't know what happened. it's not her. so i don't know what was going on with her. i don't have any clues why she did that. >> now she's due in court today. students say she was behaving

times" reports he's employing undocumented immigrants at his own luxury golf club in bedminster, new jersey. victorina morales and sandra diaz say they were both hired as housekeepers even though they came into the country illegally. you were working there with a fake green card. >> uh-huh. >> reporter: morales says her job included cleaning the president and daughter ivanka trump's personal residences. what exactly did you do for the trump family? "clean the house, clean the mathroom. make his bed." morales said she once told the president she was from guatemala. he told you he liked workers from guatemala. "yes," she says, he liked the way we worked. the women say they were not alone. other undocumented immigrants worked at bedminster and some managers were not only aware, they helped coordinate getting false green cards and workers' permits. you told them, you told staff at the golf club that you didn't have the right papers and they still gave you a job. "yes," she says. president trump called out

businesses who employ undocumented immigrants and when he opened his hotel in washington, he claimed it was totally aboveboard. >> we didn't have one illegal immigrant on the job. everybody knows it. >> reporter: the white house is refusing to comment on the situation at bedminster referring us to the trump organization. a spokesman there telling us, we have tens of thousands of employees across our properties and have very strict hiring practices. if any employee submitted false documentation in an attempt to circumvent the law, they will be terminated immediately. >> and tom says there's no evidence that president trump or executives at the trump organization knew of the workers' immigration status. we're getting new insight into the murder of a colorado family. the parents of shanann watts are speaking out for the first time since her husband chris killed her and their two daughters. shanann's parents tell "20/20's amy robach they saw no signs of trouble in the marriage. they thought chris watts was

with alexis. good morning, drew. we are starting off with road work in the east bay. oakland, a full closure of northbound 880 between 23rd and 29th. you know the drill by now if this is along your route. tearing down the overpass at 23rd. all lanes are scheduled to reopen at 5:00 this morning. they had been wrapping this up ahead of schedule. we'll see if it happens today. you do not want to get caught up in that. everyone else moving through with no issues. from our live desk this morning, two cars crashed into an apartment building in san jose overnight. we have this new video on the corner of meridian and willow street. a man who lives at the apartment says one car went through his bedroom window. you can see the damage on the right side of the video when you look in this video.
