good morning, america. hope you're well this friday morning. welcome back to cecilia. >> thank you. shaping up to be a busy friday morning. we, of course, have that huge oscars bombshell. kevin hart stepping down. we'll have much more coming up. before we get to that we'll begin with that dangerous storm that is on the move this morning. heavy rains leading to mudslides, forcing mandatory evacuations in southern california and now that system is heading east. and we're going to go right to ginger who is in our extreme weather center. she's been tracking the storm and she'll let us know all about it. >> working hard with the team looking at the images we see all day. check this out, interstate 5 in california shut down because of snow. you do not see that in southern california very often. you do see this, when even a half inch of rain hits a burn scar area, you can get mudslides. yesterday up to 4 1/2 inches in the last 48 hours so really impressive rain totals and a big disaster for southern california where we find our matt gutman in

lake elsinore. >> reporter: hey, good morning, ginger. those are the burn scar hills that you're talking about. and everywhere here is the mud that came coursing through here. i want to give you a sense of how high it was, before they cleaned it up. it's more like cement than mud. that mud coursing through the town of lake elsinore with definite force turning streets into impassable canals of mud, up to two feet high. >> we just don't know the stability of our hills anymore. the fire did its devastation. the hills behind us that are not a concern could become a concern very quickly. >> reporter: thousands evacuated from areas that burned in wildfires just weeks ago. the mud rivers shooting down from canyons and dams like this. the so-called mud line in this woman's home marking the height of the mud surge, even seeping through her walls. neighbors rushing to pile sandbags and shovel whatever they could away from the

foundation. >> i moved everything to that side. i pushed everything that way. we just bagged up all we could. >> reporter: parts of the pacific coast highway seemingly cemented in mud, shutting it down, it rave so heavy at times, it caved in the roof of this day care center in san diego. no children were inside. and it wasn't only rain, just north of los angeles, snow crippled highways. traffic frozen in place for miles. >> we have a storm moving through the gorman area about 40 miles north of los angeles along the 5 freeway that shut the freeway down entirely. >> reporter: and a scare at one of the area's busiest airports. southwest flight 278 was traveling with limited visibility from oakland into burbank when it hydroplaned off the runway. >> just be advised, there will be a lot of emergency vehicles exiting. >> you could see shrapnel like sand and mud flying up past the windows. >> reporter: now, the local national weather service did not predict this, ginger.

they forecast light to moderate rain and no mudslides. apparently this is a was a difficult to forecast kind of storm. ginger. >> we're trying to do impact. i'm hoping for the future we can worry about even a half inch of rain. thanks so much. but let's look at the map. as this moves east it's not just the moisture, but you see that it freezes. and that's where it's going to become a big issue for saturday and sunday through the plains. if you saw your state highlighted pay close attention. on saturday, just north of 20 it turns into ice and snow. and cecilia, as we wrap up sunday up to a foot of snow in western north carolina like hickory could be buried. >> it is going to be a busy weekend for you guys, thank you. we want to turn now to that stunning oscar news overnight. kevin hart stepping down as host. this came just days after his name was announced and, of course, after a firestorm over past anti-gay tweets. adrienne bankert is here with the latest on all of this. good morning, adrienne. >> reporter: good morning to you, too, cecilia. there was at first so much excitement over kevin hart hosting the academy awards, even posted how this had been a career dream of his for a very

long time. but then outrage after calls came to remove him as host, tweets from the comedian's past that many believed are no laughing matter. two days after landing his dream job being named the host of the 2019 academy awards, kevin hart announced he won't be working the gig. in a tweet overnight, he said, i made the choice to step down from hosting this year's oscars, this is because i do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing, talented artists. the popular comedian whose star has been rocketed landing leading roles in blockbusters like "central intelligence" and "jumanji" has 66 million instagram followers, more than the last three oscars hosts combined. his record-breaking tour has him outselling rock bands like u2. >> we sold a football stadium out tonight. so i need to hear that! >> reporter: but this morning, hart resigned as host, after

critics called out his past tweets and jokes featuring anti-gay slurs and expressing homophobic sentiments. >> if i can prevent my son from being gay, i will. >> reporter: in posts, he says, i'm in love with the man i'm becoming. >> guys, i'm almost 40 years old. if you don't believe that people change, grow, evolve as they get older i don't know what to tell you. >> reporter: that defiant tone added fuel to the fire as more calls came for the academy to ax hart as host. fellow comedian billy eichner tweeting a simple authentic apology showing any bit of understanding or remorse would have been so simple. the president of the human rights campaign tweeting, you say you've grown, show us. make amends for hurtful things you've said and affirm lgbtq people. hart seemingly standing firm went on to say on instagram again. >> so i just got a call from the academy and that call basically said, kevin, apologize for your tweets of old. or we're going to have to move on to find another host. talking about the tweets in 2009 and 2010. i chose to pass. i passed on the apology. >> reporter: hart says he has

addressed this exact issue before and has no reason to do so again. >> we're feeding internet patrols and reward them. i'm not going to do it, man. i'm going to be me. i'm going to stand my ground. regardless of the academy, i'm thankful for the opportunity. if it goes away, no harm, no foul. >> reporter: but less than an hour later, heart did apologize, tweeting i sin nearly apologize for the lgbt community. much love and appreciation to the academy. i hope we can meet again. >> so far, the academy has post nod statement. the issue does lend a question of whether a person can change. we'll see what people in hollywood, as well as audiences think about that. >> thanks so much. we're going to move on now to the white house, where president trump appears to be zeroing in on major staffing changes as he moves to the new

year. positions like u.n. ambassador and attorney general. our chief white house correspondent jon karl has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. there are some big changes afoot here at the white house. the president has decided to nominate a former fox news personality as the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. minutes ago the president made it official, he's nominating heather nauert. >> she's very smart and very quick. nauert came to her current state department job without any government experience and no foreign policy experience either. she was, however, an anchor on "fox & friends," the president's favorite cable news show. nauert would replace nikki haley, who was a two-term governor of south carolina. >> he was the first choice for

number one. >> reporter: barr has already served as the attorney general for the elder president bush in the 1990s. while barr was attorney general, he was robert mueller's boss. >> are you now directing mueller? >> yes. >> reporter: at the time mueller was the head of the doj criminal justice division. jeff sessions, a u.s. attorney at the time, also served under barr. barr will be seen as a relatively noncontroversial choice, an establishment choice. but there are some things that he will be asked about undoubtedly. one of which last year he suggested that there is more reason to investigate allegations against hillary clinton than russian collusion with the trump campaign. >> yeah, he agrees with the president on that one. but, jon, as we've seen the president on a tweet storm, this morning, about the mueller investigation, of course, it comes ahead of two big reports expected today from the special counsel, the sentencing memos for paul manafort and michael cohen. >> reporter: these are big potentially leading us to get real information as to where mueller is going with his investigation. he'll be describing information

regarding manafort, why he decided to break up that plea agreement, what manafort has been lying about. you remember, he accused manafort of lying. and the sentencing of michael cohen. this will be two interesting filings. >> okay, jon karl, thanks very much. it will be a big day in washington. fired fbi director james comey is also there testifying on capitol hill, but it's going to be behind closed doors. our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce has more. comey, mary, had wanted to testify in public. didn't go that way. >> reporter: yeah, cecilia. it took a lot of negotiating to get to this point. but the former fbi director agreed to answer questions here on the hill this morning behind closed doors. this is house republicans' last chance to haul comey up to the hill before they lose control. and comey initially fought their subpoena request saying republicans would just selectively leak parts of this interview. but ultimately, he has agreed to come here under the conditions he be allowed to speak out publicly afterwards and they release the full transcripts. >> republicans want to question

comey. among the things they want to question him about, the fbi's role in the 2016 election, including the investigation into hillary clinton's private e-mail server. >> reporter: yeah, and they also want to get to the bottom of the origins of the russia investigation and republicans say there are inconsistencies with comey's previous testimony though not saying what they are. overall republicans here argue that the agency was biased against donald trump while democrats here, cecilia, say this is nothing more than a political show to distract from the russia investigation. >> all right, mary bruce, thank you. michael? >> thank you. and now to new questions for president trump after two women came forward saying they were undocumented immigrants while working at president trump's new jersey golf course. one says she often came into contact with the president, making his bed and doing his laundry. now they are speaking out, angry over the way trump talks about immigrants. abc's chief national affairs correspondent tom llamas had a chance to speak with them. good morning, tom. >> michael, good morning to you.

these women paint a picture of the exact type of business president trump calls out, the women tell us they don't know nor have any proof president trump knew they were working illegally but they allege people who work for him did. this morning, president trump's business hit with accusations in stark contrast to his stance on illegal immigration. "the new york times" first reporting that the trump organization employed at least two undocumented immigrants at its luxury golf club in bedminster, new jersey. victorina morales and sandra diaz say they were both hired as housekeepers even though they came into the country illegally. you were working there with a fake green card. >> uh-huh. >> uh-huh. >> reporter: yes, she says. morales says her job included cleaning both mr. trump and daughter ivanka trump's personal residences. what exactly did you do for the trump family? clean the house, she says. clean the bathroom. make his bed. morales said she once told the president she was from guatemala. he told you he liked workers from guatemala. yes, the women said.

he liked the way we worked. the women admit they were working with false documents and say that other undocumented immigrants worked at bedminster, and some managers were not only aware, but helped coordinate getting false green cards and worker permits. you told them, you told staff at the golf club you didn't have the right papers and they still gave you a job. yes, she says. president trump called out businesses who employ undocumented immigrants. and when he opened his hotel in washington -- >> we didn't have one illegal immigrant on the job. everybody knows it. >> reporter: now, one of those women, sandra diaz says she has a green card but no longer works there. the other, victorina morales, does not and was scheduled to work yesterday, but has since quit. the white house refusing to comment on this one, guys. the situation. but the trump organization telling us we have tens of thousands of employees across our properties and have strict hiring practices. if any employee submitted false documentation in an attempt to circumvent the law, they will be

terminated immediately. guys. >> thank you, tom. we turn to the search for those five missing american marines lost after their aircraft collided in midair off the coast of japan. these marines among the 50,000 u.s. servicemen and women stationed in japan. our chief foreign affairs correspondent martha raddatz in washington with the latest. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. the five marines who are still missing were in the big kc-130 refueler aircraft. the two found in the water, one of them alive, were in the fighter jet which has ejection seats. this morning, an urgent search for those five missing marines, but after nearly 48 hours, time is running out. their refueling tanker, which is essentially a flying gas station, was attempting to refuel an f-18 fighter jet in the dark of night when the two airplanes collided. the refueler has retractible hoses with baskets on the end. the fighter jet must approach the refueler and plug its own nozzle into the moving basket.

all of this midflight, about 20 feet from the other aircraft. using night vision goggles. >> rendezvousing on another airplane at night is challenging. if you're doing it in the weather, which we know weather was a factor. doing it way out at sea, where you have blackness underneath you and above, no visible horizon, can be very disorienting. you'd get vertigo and disorientation. >> reporter: the marines in the fighter jet ejected from their aircraft and a locater beacon would have guided rescuers to their location. a raft could have been deployed from the ejection seat if the marines were conscious. but neither was found in a raft. the marine who survived was in the 60-degree water for four hours. the one who did not was in the water for ten. the marines corps has now identified the deceased marine as the pilot, 28-year-old jammar resolard.

but there is growing concern about the frequency of military aviation accidents, which a military times reports climbed 40% in the last five years. >> a lot of questions there. we want to turn to that moving tribute for former president george h.w. bush. thousands lining up to say their last good-bye as the special train painted like air force one carried the 41st president to his final resting place in college station, texas. many leaving coins on the rails for the train to run over and flatten. something they could keep as a memento. these elementary school students holding that simple banner there, thank you. a sentiment echoed throughout the day by so many. former president george w. bush brought to tears by reba mcentire, one of his father's favorites. they joined 41 on the train to his presidential library where he was buried beside barbara, his wife of 73 years and their daughter robin. truly a beautiful thing to see. >> without a doubt. what an amazing man. now we'll go back to ginger with more on the coldness coming to the east. >> yeah, you know you had to

that disturbing video from a high school classroom where a teacher became unhinged, arrested after cutting a student's hair while singing the national anthem then went after another student. kayna whitworth is here with the story. >> yeah, george, good morning. that teacher now being held on $100,000 bail after this bizarre behavior, the school saying they removed her from the classroom immediately and now working with police. ♪ what so proudly we hail >> reporter: it's the startling video that has landed a california high school teacher behind bars. watch as 52-year-old teacher margaret gieszinger is caught on camera forcibly cutting one student's hair. then throwing it behind her all while bellowing the national anthem. ♪ and bright stars >> reporter: when he realized what happened, he stands up. >> i'm not done. >> reporter: then she begins chasing students around the classroom with scissors, even grabbing this girl's hair.

>> no. >> reporter: but she managed to get away. terrified students running out of the classroom. one student whose voice has been altered says she had declared the day as haircut day. they thought she was joking at first then quickly realized she was not. >> i hope i never have to see her at that school again because i know for a fact that i will never be able to see her as a respectable authority figure in my life. >> reporter: gieszinger's husband telling our affiliate he's surprised and confused by his wife's actions. >> i'm trying to figure out myself so i don't know what happened. it's not her. it's not who she is. i don't know what was going on with her. i don't have any clue as to why she did that. >> reporter: now, this is a teacher who's had her credentials suspended twice before. now the district attorney's office is reviewing the case. for possible charges to be filed. the school is prepared to take the most severe action possible and also deeply concerned about the students who had to witness that.

>> hard to go back in her classroom. >> yeah. thank you. >> great to have you here. we want to turn to new 911 calls you have to hear to believe. an 85-year-old man in florida attacked by an alligator and he is saved by a tourist who came to the rescue. victor oquendo is in miami with this incredible story. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. those calls came in one after the other describing that horrifying scene as that alligator bit down on that man's foot. but thankfully there was a good samaritan nearby to help. >> there's a gator eating a man. >> the alligator is attacking the man? >> reporter: in these newly released 911 calls, the chilling moments after an alligator attacked 84-year-old george ihle. >> an alligator attacked my husband. he's laying -- he's laying behind a bush bleeding. >> we're coming now to you as

fast as we can. >> okay, please hurry. >> reporter: evidence of the brutal attack which left ihle recovering in the hospital. his sneaker still in the thrashing gator's mouth. a tourist passing by using his shirt to stop the bleeding credited with saving ihle's life. >> the alligator went back into the water. the man has been attacked by an alligator. there are a few people over there right now applying a tourniquet. i can't see exactly. >> reporter: the sheriff's deputies visited ihle in the hospital wishing him a speedy recovery. and the polk county sheriff's office adding there is no such thing as a routine call, which can often be the case here in florida. we should also mention that alligator attacks are rare but as we continue to develop waterfront property in their habitat these encounters can become more common. guys. >> you are making me nervous standing next to that water there. >> doing the story like that. >> be careful. >> you guys, speaking of animals on the loose, take a look at

this little rascal. he made quite a spectacle in seminole, florida. video shows troopers pulling over an erratic driver as you see there and when the officer peers into the vehicle an acrobatic lemur pops out. it hopped out of the truck to see what's going on. like why did you pull us over for? and then it clamors down all around the officer who tries to focus on the driver as hard as that was for him and the driver tells them the lemur's name is mico and she bites and that lemur is a native of madagascar, then it puts on quite a show, like we said, parading up, down. they finally get the animal in the cage but found exotic animals in the trailer, a tortoise, a parrot and a goat. >> yeah. >> my husband is a retired highway patrol officer and you have a book on how to handle certain things, i don't think there's a book on the lemur, what to do.

a criminal could just pocket one of these cards inside a store and then go out to the parking lot, take that metallic strip right off and write down the numbers. once they have that, they can use one of these replacement metallic stickers you can buy online and just make it look brand-new. and then after you purchase the gift card and load it up, criminals periodically check and see if the card is active. then they drain the balance. as for josh, because he used the credit card with fraud protection for the purchase -- >> they actually refunded me the entire amount of which was stolen off the gift card. >> reporter: this christmas he's buying actual gifts instead of gift cards for his family. walmart told us it's investigating josh's case but it's a good warning for everyone. >> it certainly is. how do you know? what can you be on the lookout for? >> really specific tips. like josh use a credit card that has fraud protection. next you want to make sure it hasn't been tampered with. if you're pulling a card from one of those racks you want to

now, this entire neighborhood was under a mandatory evacuation when that wall of mud came roaring through here. now, they've done a pretty good job of cleaning it up. it was about a foot and a half high at one point. i want to show you the consistency of the mud, it's more like cement. that mud coursing through the town of lake elsinore with deafening force trapping locals for a time and turning streets into impassable canals of mud. >> we just don't know the stability of our hills anymore. the fire did its devastation. the hills behind us that are not a concern could become a concern very quickly. >> reporter: the mud rivers shooting down from canyons and dams like this. parts of the famed pacific coast highway seemingly cemented in mud, shutting it down. and overnight, hundreds evacuated from a temporary homeless shelter in san diego. southwest flight 278 was traveling with limited visibility from oakland into burbank when it hydroplaned off the runway. >> just be advised. there will be a lot of emergency vehicles exiting.

>> you could see shrapnel and sand and mud and stuff flying up past the windows. >> reporter: work crews are still out here, but what is concerning, george, the national weather service did not forecast this today. this weather system was very difficult to predict. george. >> thanks very much. the rest of the country, george, they are facing dangerous weather as well, 15 states under alert and, ginger, what can we expect this weekend? >> and that's the thing. we've got to really focus on impacts, right? you can have an inch of rain and have a mudslide. the impact is what i want you to listen to as we talk about some of the storm moving east. because you had up to 4 inches of snow, you get a couple in southern california. you can easily shut down a highway, which it did. interstate 5 there for a time on thursday. but now think about the impacts when you're driving on, say, interstate 20 or 35 through texas and oklahoma, that's tonight, some of the heavy rain could total 3 to 5 inches tonight through tomorrow, that

then sending back to companies like google. what if someone or something was tracking your every move? not just your location on a map. but your mode of transportation, even your elevation? more than half of americans have android phones and might be voluntarily agreeing to more than they realize. so, what data is really being collected when you accept google's terms of service? these are two new phones. we haven't opened any apps on them, neither has a sim card. we did a demonstration when the weather was warmer to find out. without connecting either phone to a network or wi-fi, we traveled around new york city to see if information was being gathered and how often. from the subway to a bike. heading out on a bike ride around 11:15 in the morning. and finally. getting into a car. it's about 12:15. we're heading into times square. still not connected to any cellular network, i arrived back at abc and enlist the help of cybersecurity expert megan

stifle, a former director in the national security council at the white house. to see what type of information our phones are collecting which might be sent back to google. >> we just connected it to our test station. >> reporter: connecting our phones to wi-fi for the first time -- a startling discovery. this phone doesn't have a sim card. it wasn't connected to the internet. but it still was collecting all of that information? >> yes, and using all the sensors in the phone to obtain as much information that it can even though it can't send it anywhere at that time. >> as soon as i connected to the network, it was transmitted back to google. >> yes. >> reporter: the android's operating system tracking my unique devices movement, even identifying the mode of transportation and at times, taking ten sensor readings per minute. >> so at 10:25, it assesses you were on a rail vehicle. >> on the train. even knew when it was tilting underground. at 11:16, what does it say?

>> on bicycle. >> it says i was on a bicycle? >> yes. >> which is what i was doing at 11:16 a.m. >> and then you -- yes, and then you got off. and maybe you were walking around a little bit later. so at 12:05, what were you doing? >> it says in road vehicle. >> so, it knows i was in a car, heading uptown to the office? >> right. >> reporter: when you agree to their terms of service you are agreeing to some types of data sharing. users might not realize how extensive it is. >> this is not something the user necessarily opted into or if they did opt into it, it was in a fashion that wasn't consistent with their expectations. >> reporter: google tells us in order to provide basic service like security notifications and app updates, smartphones need to communicate with their operating system providers and cellular carriers on a regular basis. google adds that users can view, manage or delete the information associated with their google accounts at any time. >> wow, seeing you on that bike and tracking it is something. how valuable is this information to google? >> cecilia, this is extremely valuable information. and if you think about it,

happy friday to you. here is a stunning number, 13% of students at san jose state are homeless or have been homeless in the past year. so this morning, students slept outside in a show of solidarity. school administrators have met with the group. they're looking to ways they can improve these services. that's too much to take, that kids would be going to school and also homeless. that's heartbreaking there. we're taking a look at the roads right now, we have heavy traffic in san jose. northbound 101 we had an earlier crash, that's been pushed off the to the side. several miles of heavy traffic trying to unwind behind that.
