hard to believe today marks one month since the start of the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in california history. good evening, and thank you for joining us. the campfire in butte county claimed 85 lives, burned 240 square miles and destroyed more than 18,000 ildings. the fire destroyed much of towns. six people are still unaccounted for. in the past few days, many fire

survivors have been able to return to their homes. though not much is left. one woman returned home to find her dog waiting for her. this image you see here has been going viral capturing the hearts of people around the country. reporter madison myers spoke to the dog's owner. >> madison takes his job as guard dog very seriously. but he'll cave at the sign of a wheat thin. his mom will tell you it's his favorite treat. >> you could never ask for a better animal. >> madison's story of survival is something else. when everyone evacuated from the campfire, he stayed behind to protect his home. >> by the grace we made it. >> andrea was worried about her beloved dog's madison and miguel. she had a feeling they survived. and that's where shalea comes in. she is the woman who helped andrea find her fur family. >> you know, shalea went through to get miguel. i mean seriously. that takes true dedication.

>> she found miguel but madison was missing. when the evacuation order was lifted, swhent home to see for herself. when she pulled up to the property, guess who was waiting patiently for them? >> there is our dogs waiting. and this -- you are the best dog. the best. >> because he is. >> he is. >> he was the best. madison is loyal and hanging in through the worst of circumstances. and being here waiting. it was so emotional. >> and today the emotional reunions continued. >> there's miguel. >> madison got to see his brother for the first time since the fire. >> look. >> there you go. >> andrea may have lost everything in the fire, but she never lost hope. >> their job is to watch the flocks and we're part of them.

>> in paradise -- >> it's a comforting feeling. >> madison meyer. >> can't help but smile. now if you're interested in learning more about madison or seeing more stories and videos related to the campfire, we have it all at our website, abc7 news.com. happening right now, an invasion of red is taking over the bay area this weekend. it's better known as the 24th annual santa con. thousands of santas are ready to party. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard is watching it all live in san francisco's north beach. cornell, police, they are keeping a close eye this year. >> hey, they certainly are. they certainly are. there has been a lot to watch here in north beach for sure. santas, as far as can you see, and for the most part, santa con has been calm here in north beach. many still having fun, behaving themselves. and for most part, police are

out trying to keep an estimated 17,000 people safe. ♪ oh, come all ye faithful >> santa faithful heard the call and invaded union square in a sea of red. ready to party. >> we're all from l.a., jersey. >> we're here to have a good time. >> it's the holiday season. everyone has a great time. >> this is the place. a lot of people. it's filling up little by little. >> check out the line for the golden gate tap room on powell street. it stretched around the corner. security guard dominique was busy checking ids and searching bags. >> i hope everybody has a good night and don't get too intoxicated today. >> santa tom the bell says the city's rec and parks department denied santa con for safety reasons. but santas still showed up. >> this is going to happen no matter what. you know? i mean, you're going to have 17,000 santas down here whether the city likes it or not. some totally dread santa con

saturday. this north beach cafe posted a sign telling santas to stay away because too many problems in past years. >> thank you very much. >> extra police officers on duty keeping santas out of the street. the chief says keeping everybody safe is no easy task. >> we want to make sure that people are safe. you know? a lot of folks go out and they go to the bars and nightclubs and all the santa con festivities. a lot of drinking. >> this bar on grant street totally parked. managers removed the furniture to make extra room. >> so far, so good. the toys only overflowed once. it will get worse later. everybody has a great time. it is what it is. >> yeah. it is what it is. and she said despite the crowds and a little chaos, it is her biggest day of the year. last year san francisco police say they arrested about 10 pen for public intoxication. no update on what happened this

year. live in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> much appreciated, cornell. thank you. santa con participants are encouraged to bring a toy to donate to children this holiday season. today the san francisco firefighters toy drive was set up near union square, a popular spot during santa con. they say the arrangement works out nicely. >> people that reached out to us over the last five, six years probably as well as the hotel and this is a good gathering point for the people that are enjoying the event. it ends up being one of our biggest donor driven events of the whole season. >> toy drive organizers say they gather about $150,000 toys during the holiday season. a developing story now. president trump announced today chief of staff john kelly will leave his job at the end of the year. trump says he'll announce a replacement for kelly in the next day or two. kelly a retired marine general has been chief of staff since july of 2017. trump said today kelly is "a

great guy and he doesn't know if kelly is officially retiring." kelly has not commented on the announcement. six people cannot return home tonight after an early morning fire in eastern county. that fire spread outside the house on lone tree way near anderson lane. flames destroyed at least two parked vehicles just before 4:30 this morning. firefighters say nobody was hurt. investigators do believe the fire started inside the kitchen of the three bedroom home. the red cross is now assisting the six people who were displaced that includes two children. authorities are searching for a driver who caught another ride after his vehicle veered off highway 101 and into the san francisco bay. it happened at about 9:30 this morning near candlestick park. witnesses tell chp the man got out of a black mazda suv flagging down a passing car and then took off. officers say no other passengers were in the half submerged vehicle. >> a performer is recovering

after getting hurt during a show in san francisco. the company tells abc 7 news that the performer fell off of a bmx bike during a stunt. it happened yesterday in the final act of the 430 volta show. you're looking at video of a previous performance provided by cirque. the performer is doing well and his condition will be monitored by staff. last night's 8:00 p.m. show was canceled but shows will resume tonight. the incident comes after months afte performer in florida, one performer fell after he fell to the ground during an aerial stunt in march. new details on a leaning power poll in pacific. pg & e started the process of replacing the power pole. a neighbor shared this security video showing pg & e crews beginning to repair that pole today. a pg & e spokesperson says repairs will be completed tomorrow. it happens after an abc 7 story

police fired tear gas at protesters in paris today as

demonstrators smashed store windows and set fires around the city. the violence is under control. police people have been protesting for almost a month over an increase in fuel tax and other political issues. officials say 135 people were injured in today's protests including 17 police officers in 1,000 people were taken into custody. if you see a bright flash in the sky tonight, it may be a rocket from air force base in santa barbara. launches from the base have been quite the sight in the past. you're looking at video from october. now today's launch was originally scheduled for friday but got postponed due to technical issues. the launch tonight scheduled for 8:06. the rocket is carrying a secretive satellite for the u.s. national reconnaissance office. generations of north bay residents made the holidays a little brighter for american troops serving overseas. abc 7 news and santa claus were at napa valley college when 500 volunteers filled care packages

to day. this marks the 12th year for operation with love from home. each of the 1,000 packages includes personal care items and snacks. it's a big morale boost for our service members oversea who's are deployed in harms way in a remote region. and it's just tremendous. and here we are with almost 500 community members filling care packages today just to be together and show the campaign started in 2007 to help a mappa man and marines deployed overseas. >> coming up, ready, set, plunge. the good cause that had san francisco police officers and firefighters jumping into the bay. >> accuweather, we're tracking our next chance of showers.

san francisco's crime fighters braved bait today to raise money for the make a wish foundation. abc 7 news was at aquatic park when police officers and others took a quick dip. they call it plunge for wishes and they braved 59-degree water to raise about $130,000. >> grant 13 wishes. it's just a great event. we get everybody out. we jump in the polar waters of the bay here and everybody has a good time. and we raise money for the kids to grant those wishes. >> we have our command staff here. we have a recruit class here. we have a lot of our officers here. >> abc 7 news reporter amanda served as the emcee for today's fund-raiser. some of the people who took a plunge in the bay also pulled a cable car to help the make a wish foundation. >> now your forecast. >> and in accuweather, starting out the weekend dry. a really comfortable start in

terms of temperatures in the 50s and 60s. and tonight, it will be chilly across the region.gion.gion.gion live doppler 7 giving that you sweep. we're dry for the time being. tonight. a live look from the tower. the beautiful lights of san francisco. it's a really nice night. in terms of december evenings, it's comfortable out there right now. 58 that current temperature in san francisco. we're holding at 60 degrees for both hayward and fremont this hour. 56 that current temperature in san jose. so overnight tonight, we'll see clouds starting to thicken across the region. so we'll call it mainly overcast skies after midnight. and if you're out and about later on tonight, have the heavier jacket with you. it will dip into the upper 30s. and the north bay enableds, overnight lows in the low if not mid 40s over the next 12 hours. the bigger picture, live doppler 7 along with satellite now, essentially what we have is high pressure situated between us and l.a.

and that brought us a really quiet start to the weekend. that's not moving over the next 24 hours. so tomorrow we'll be equally as quiet and dry. what we're tracking though, there is a weak cold front right now. you see it right there in live doppler 7 along with satellite. that moves through early monday morning. and bring us the chance of a couple of light showers across the region. so the 12 hour day planner on your sunday, it's dry for the most part. during the day, it's kind of a blend of sun and clouds out. there by noon, partly sunny. by 4:00, we have those dry skies. temperatures basically in the mid 50s to low 60s. pretty much a carbon copy forecast tomorrow like we had today. in san francisco, about 62. 58 the high in napa. and a bit cool we are a high of 53 degrees. but early monday morning showers do return. so we bring back the storm impact scale. it will be a level one system. a light system on monday morning. winds are really light. and generally the showers will

be out of here by noon on our monday. it's really short lived system. hour by hour we go. early monday morning, this is midnight. you see some light showers perhaps just approaching santa rosa at that hour. by 4:00, 5:00 in the morning on monday, we do anticipate some wet roadways for the commute through san francisco. but as this front sinks douj, it really loses a lot of the moisture. so by 8:00 this is falling part. and by midday, it's all but out of here. total rainfall really light with the system on monday morning as you go through future weather. and i would expect a lot of areas in the south bay and inland as well, you may end up with dry skies with this weak moving front. generally rainfall, less than a quarter inch. it's not a huge issue. the 7 day forecast, partly sunny on your sunday. there's that chance of a morning shower on monday. it's out of here by the afternoon. bright skies on tuesday. we're dry through thursday. by friday, clouds will be on the increase. a chance of showers that night. otherwise, next weekend looking

season comes to an end with one of the sport's biggest rivalries. the army navy game. it first kicked off all the way back in 1890. to philadelphia we go. this is the 119th meeting between these two teams. army opened the game with a 82-yard drive capped off with a ten yard touchdown run. these two teams like to run only a combined nine of 26 passing. maybe trail 10-0. finally gets on the board in the fourth. garret lewis drives it in from a yard out. 10-7. army responds. just 94 seconds later, hopkins again so it's 17-7 after a navy field goal. they need to recover the onside kick. it doesn't happen. army wins the commander in chief trophy for a third straight year. 17-10 the final. >> a bufrnch of guys that never quit. that's the greatest thing about this football team. with he have guys that care about this brotherhood. that's all it is. we don't quit. >> the highsman trophy winner
