thanks so much for joining us on this sunday, december 9th. i'm kate larson. we'll start with meteorologist lisa argen. >> kate, good you all right. live doppler 7, the visibility really reduced to zero. three quarter of a mile in concord. fairfield, half a mile as well as santa rosa and three quarters of a mile in petaluma. really aren't the valleys of the east bay, but as you get closer to the bay, it becomes more mat patchy. through the next several hours, it's going to stay there. it's going to take until at

least 11:00, 12:00 that it begins to burn back. right now, temperatures are in the 40s except for everybody far in the north bay. 47 in hayward. and today we'll see a few more clouds, partly to sunny conditions with temperatures a few degrees cooler. we're going to stay dry through the evening, but perhaps a few showers for your monday morning commute. i'll detail that for you coming up. kate? >> thanks, lisa. developing now, thousands of people are without power this morning as a winter storm slams the southeast. snow is making its way from north carolina to virginia. this is new video from asheville and waynesville, north carolina, overnight. some areas are seeing 1 to 2 inches of snow every hour. freezing rain is also falling in the central part of the state. now, this storm could have an impact on flights across the country. we'll stay on top of this developing story throughout the morning. for the first time, the wife of bay area radio legend ray taliaferro is responding to her husband's death. authorities say there were no signs of foul play, but his son has decided to hire a private

investigator. abc 7 news reporter joe beena fortsen has the latest. >> reporter: since his body was found, we've heard from taliaferro's son, police, but not his wife. she was with him when he disappeared from a property in illinois on november 10th. we've received an exclusive statement from her just as her husband's son explained to us that he has hired a private investigator to look into her and his father's case. longtime kgo radio legend rayal terri -- taliaferro was last seen alive at this church on november 190. two teenagers found him dead in a wooded area about three weeks later. an autopsy found no signs of foul play, but his son thinks there's more to the story. >> i feel there was foul play in bringing him to that area to start with. there was something going on. >> reporter: charlotte crawford was married to taliaferro just for a few months befe vanished. the two were checking out this property in southern illinois. raphael taliaferro has hired a

private investigator to look into crawford and his father's case. crawford is aware of the investigation and through a spokesperson exclusively responded to us saying, quote, we are also saddened at the loss of my beloved ray and hope that all of his friends and family can come together to honor the man and the legacy of a great pioneer. >> her account was that he drove away. my father wasn't a driving person. he always got a cab. he might have some colleagues that know that, wherever he left the show in the morning, he always caught a cab. >> reporter: taliaferro's son is questioning police, too, believing paducah's expect dropped the ball in the search for his father, who was suffering from dementia. >> it could have been a number of other things that resulted to his death. >> reporter: taliaferro's son plan to move forward with the memorial that the commonwealth club in san francisco has offered to host after the holidays. a family spokesperson for crawford tells me she hopes to have a memorial day in san francisco, as well and include his family. reporting in the news room, jobina fortson, abc 7 news.

more fema trailers are expected to arrive in butte county today. they will serve as temporary housing for some of the camp fire evacuees. this is video of some of those trailers arriving yesterday. they are being kept in an rv park in corning. new information about help for people whose homes were damaged or destroyed in the camp fire. federal officials say victims will not lose disaster assistance if they cannot get their house inspected within the next month. the announcement was to squash a rumor that butte county residents would miss out on benefit ifs they didn't get an inspection by fema. yesterday marked one month since the fire started. it is the deadliest and most destructive wildfire on record in state history. 85 people died and about 14,000 homes were destroyed. authorities are searching for a driver who caught another ride after his car veered off highway 10an francisco bay. it happened around 9:30 yesterday morning near candlestick park.

witnesses tell chp the man got out of his black mazda suv, flagged down a passing car, and then took off. officers say there is no one else inside that car. pg&e is working to repair a leaning power pole in pacifica. a neighbor shared this security video that shows pg&e crews beginning the repairs yesterday. this comes after an abc 7 news story last week about how the pole had been marked for repair back in august. nothing had been done since then. one woman tells us she got the phone call about the construction and possible outag. >> i got a call yesterday from senator jerry hill's office, saying they had seen the television news clip about the situation and they were calling, you know, to check in with us and to call pg&e and say they wanted to, you know, get on it. >> pg&e did tell us the pole was structurally sound and there was no danger of it falling. the repairs are expetoda

a rocket launch from vanderburgh air force base has been postponed. this comes after some kind of problem just before it was set to take off from santa barbara. abc 7 news reporter katie udas spoke to an astronomier at oakland's chaves base and science center. >> reporter: this recent rocket launch cast a bright streak across the bay area sky. the mysterious-looking object prompted calls to our newsroom and the science center. >> they want to know what it is. they don't understand it. a lot of people think it's a meteor. >> reporter: saturday night's scheduled launch from air force base near sbraanta barbara expected to look even brighter. but adding to the mystique, it's actually a spy satellite. >> satellites with very high-resolution cameras on them, communications information, they don't tell you a lot about out, because it is a secret. another half hour yet before launch. >> reporter: three rocket

boosters on the delta 4 heavy rocket will be shooting the satellite into orbit. it's the size of a small bus. normally, we like to bring you bright, clear video, but when you're trying to watch a rocket launch, darkness is necessary. so we're going to turn off the lights. >> so we should see it somewhere right in this area, is where it should first appear. >> reporter: a crowd of people packed the observation deck. >> aren't you cold? >> reporter: the launch scheduled for shortly after 8:00. >> they moved the time to 8:15. >> 7, 6, 5. we have ignition. 4, 3 -- hold, hold. >> as the launch was scrubbed, people retreated for warmth. >> some kind of a technical problem that cropped up just before it was time to ignite the engines. so they are postponing, hopefully they'll go again tomorrow night. >> reporter: this is the second time the delta 4 launch has been postponed. it's unclear when it will be

rescheduled. in oakland, katie news. >> and we do have some clear skies, but not everywhere. >> fog creating some issues certainly in our east bay valleys and also around the san pablo bay, delta. you can see some of it here from our live camera. 48 degrees, san francisco. and disability in livermore, really down to nothing at 39 degrees. so be careful out there, give yourself some time or wait a while. we have some sun on the way, but not as much as yesterday, and actually rain showers to talk about, that's all coming up. thanks, lisa. also coming up, a camp pilot program that's aimed at making it more exclusive, where some campers will sleep in an all-gender bunk this summer. also, apparently no permit was no problem for this sea of santas. how the 24th annual santa-con went and the cause

tomorrow, mental health clinicians at two bay area ki r kaiser permanente facilities are planning a five-day strike. organizers say clinicians will hold rallies at kaiser facilities across the state including in san jose. union workers say that they're not getting the mental health need that they need. >> we're trying to advocate for greater return access for our patients. kaiser has been making greater effort to get patients in the door, but once they're in the door, it takes them about, on average, four to six weeks, if not more, to get back in to see their therapists again. >> they would like to decrease the amount of time that the therapists spend with each patient. and that's something that we are not able to do. we're challenged by that.

>> kaiser says offices will remain open and they're making arrangements so the strike will have a minimal effect on patients. dozens of teachers at oakland high school are planning on a walkout tomorrow. the teachers are reportedly upset with the school district over contract negotiations. organizers plan to march to city hall, where they hope to speak with mayor libby schaaf. the walkout is not sanctioned by the union. the teachers have been without a contract for about two years. district officials say they are aware of the situation and the possibility that other teachers could join them. a camp outside yosemite national park is piloting a program to be more inclusive. this summer, it will have an abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow has the story. >> it's 100% possible. >> reporter: this summer, jonathan brunn and his big sister, sabina. >> 10 and two minutes older than my twin. >> reporter: will attend camp tuanga, a residential summer camp outside of yosemite national park. it won't be their first summer

at camp, but it will be the summer both have the option of camping in an all-gender bunk as opposed to a girls' bunk or boys' band. >> of course i'm happy. >> jonathan says he's transgender and nonbinary. >> i identify as both. >> reporter: jonathan uses the pronouns he, she, and they. >> he's not male or female, he's johnny. >> reporter: the idea came from campers. >> we've had a cabin called g-11. the children came up the idea to change the name to ag-11, all gender 11. >> that was my bunk. >> reporter: the all-gender bunk will have a no-nudity role with curtained areas for changing. >> this ensures that everyone feels really safe. >> reporter: before attending his current school, jonathan was often bullied. >> it's mainly very annoying and it also hurt, physically and non-physically. >> reporter: but his mom says he was never bullied at camp tuanga. >> tuanga, being such an

for the gold gaeen gate tap roo powell street. it stretched around the corner. >> just hope everybody has a good night, be safe. >> reporter: santa tom debelle says the city's rec and parks department denied santa-con an event permit for union square for safety reasons, but santas still showed up. >> this is going to happen no matter what. you're going to have 17,000 santas down here, whether the city likes it or not. >> what's up, santa-con! >> reporter: some totally dread santa-con saturday. this north beach cafe posted a sign telling santas to stay away because of too many problems in past years. >> thank you very much. >> reporter: extra police officers on duty keeping santas out of the street. the chief says keeping everybody safe is no easy task. >> we want to make sure that people are safe, you know, a lot of folks go out and they go to the bars and the nightclubs and all the essti

>> reporter: so far, so good! the toilets have only overflowed once. >> reporter: she said despite the crowds and a little chaos, it is her biggest day of the year. last year san francisco police say they arrested about ten people for public intoxication. no update on what happened this year. live in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> santa-con, though, not all about the egg nog. participants were encouraged to bring toy donations. the san francisco firefighter's toy drive was set up near union square. that's usually where all the santas gather before heading out to that bar crawl. firefighters say the arrangement works out nicely. >> people that run it have reached out to us over the last five, six years, as well as the hannover hotel and this is a good gathering point for people who are attending the event and it end up being one of our biggest donor-driven events of the whole season. >> toy drive organizers say they

collect about 150,000 toys during the holiday season. >> announcer: now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> hi, there. sunday morning, starting out with that dense fog around the bay area and it extends all the way into the san joaquin valley. so live doppler 7 showing you, yes, how foggy it is. be careful out there. you can see in livermore, down to zero miles. that means you just can't see anything in front of you. three quarters of a mile in concord and then petaluma and this changes in spots. even though we have 7 miles in oakland, it will be okay for about a quarter of a mile, and it will hit you again. really do be careful as you head out. san carlos airport, 2 1/2 miles visibility. and i want to get you caught up on what's going across the southeast. if you have some travel plans, this is really intense, where we have the icy conditions, the warmer air and the upper elevations, the colder air trapped at the surface. so we have all sorts of mixed precipitation here, from snow in memphis and the ice in the purple here.

you can see the heavier rain and we've got winter storm warnings for northern georgia up through the carolinas. not too often do you hear about that. so you can count on delays here and this really messing up parts of air travel today, with all of this continuing to head to the east and a couple of feet expected in the mountains of north carolina. back home, we're in the 40s. it feels mild, when you step out, you know there's something different about the atmosphere this morning. we're warmer, but we're moister and we do have all of that fog. 34, santa rosa. 34, san mateo. 32 in mountain view this morning. and we will look for the temperatures to stay in a narrow range, once again today. so we're looking at that milder start, but our forecast highlights calling for the fog through at least noontime and then we'll look for partly cloudy conditions. chance of rain comes in overnight. looking at some scattered showers for your monday morning commute. this is our storm impact scale. it's a light system headed our way, bringing some breezy winds, up to about 20 miles an hour. but then by noon, this is over. it's going to be a cool day,

though, tomorrow, once the front moves through. as we go through the rest of the afternoon today, we're dry, 9:30, we're still dry, and the rain begins to move into the north bay after midnight. so about 3:00 in the morning, you can see the green there, but by 5:00, 6:00, it's pushing into the east bay. the peninsula, and then by about 8:00, it's pretty much evaporated. so rainfall amounts have been scaled back to anywhere from still a couple hundredths in the south bay to about a tenth in the north bay. so really a nuisance event and highs today, a little milder with a little more sun on the way, 58 in oakland, san mateo, 60 in free month. 62 in san jose. we'll call it partly sunny. and then overnight, the rain moves in. numbers in the 40s, and it should be a slick start to your workweek. the accuweather seven-day forecast, a one on our storm impact scale for tomorrow, but then we'll break into some sun, a cool afternoon, breezy. tuesday, wednesday, thursday, noce that you can track the our

eyer biclyarge . th ce the counterculture, and a dream of some scientists to use computers in a different way. on december 9th, 1968, that dream started to become a reality. >> we're going to try our best to show you rather than tell you. >> reporter: on that day, douglas engelbart from the stafford research institute gave a presentation at a conference in san francisco that would revolutionize computing. over a span of 90 minutes, engelbart introduced the world to the computer mouse. >> i don't know why we call it a mouse. >> word processing. >> i would like to copy from that, it will copy it. >> reporter: clickable links called hypertext. >> point to that, and lo and behold. >> reporter: windows and video conferencing. >> hi, bill. >> that completely blew people's minds in 1968. this was just science fiction stuff for most of the people who were watching. >> reporter: mark weber of the computer history museum says engelbart showed computer

scientists a glimpse of the future. realtime interaction with a computer. >> the whole idea of sitting in front of a screen with a keyboard, interacting directly with a computer, it was very radical at the time. it demonstrated the ability for a computer to be not just controlled by a human being, but to be integrated with how a human being wants to dmucommunie and collaborate. >> reporter: steve sasinski says scientists are still finding inspiration in engelbart's idea. >> talking to the system, as you can see up there, it's immediately saying, there's some speech. >> reporter: his team showed a system that recognizes different languages based on their pitch and tone. eng engelbart's demo took place in the bill graham auditorium, the same place steve joshs bs unvei the apple computer. it was engelbart set the tone

for how today's tech entrepreneurs pitched their ideas to investors. >> venture capitalists around silicon valley still point to the mother of all demows when they talk to a young entrepreneur. go to doug's demo and watch that. and if you can replicate something like that, i'll give you some money. >> that archive video is so fun to watch. the computer history museum is hosting an all-day symposium and exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of engelbart's demo. it is from 9:15 this morning until 7:30 tonight and similar events will be held in london and tokyo. in the south bay, san jose state is opening its first-ever food pantry. the spartan food pantry will be located inside the renovated student union. according to the school's vice president, it will be 1,000 square feet and filled with fresh produce, fresh and frozen meats, milk, bread, and canned goods. there will also be a section for

personal hygiene products. work to buildantr began about ten years ago. this news comes after a report showing san jose has the highest student population of all state schools. 11% of students in the 23-campus system are homeless, but at san jose state, more than 13% are homeless or have dealt with homelessness in the past year. administrators say they are working with other organizations to come up with solutions. still to come on abc 7 mornings, a foggy morning in some parts of the bay area. the areas under a dense fog advisory right now. then, the man who fired omarosa from the white house is also leaving now. the leading candidate to take over as chief of staff. and a little taste of home for the holidays.

it is 5:30 on this sunday. and we're going to start this half hour with a look at weather with meteorologist lisa argen. lisa, some folks are going to be waking up to fog. >> yeah, that's right. some very dense fog out there, katie. in fact, the national weather service has issued a dense fog advisory until 11:00 this morning for areas of the east bay valleys and north of the golden gate bridge, the san pablo bay. you can see it here, depicted on this map and it's going to take us at least through noon before the conditions improve. so that thick ground fog coming in from the delta, and you can see visibility down to nothing in livermore. we have a half mile, concord, fairfield, and a quarter mile santa rosa with two miles, just a little bit better than that in san car lose. so we're all in the 40s. it's milder with all that moisture in the air. 46 in free month. as we go through the next three hours, notice, 10:00, still rather gray out there. 40s and 50s, that damp cold. and then by the afternoon, we're in the mid- to upper 50s, a few peeks of sun.

and then by the evening hours, it's pretty mild, but we have rain on the way. i'll track it for you and tell you what to expect, how much to expect, coming up. kate? >> thanks, lisa. president trump says chief of staff john kelly will leave his job at the end of the year. abc 7 news reporter ty hernandez has more on the departure. >> reporter: white house chief of staff john kelly receiving his marching orders. the president making the announcement as he departed the white house, headed to the army/navy game. >> john kelly will be leaving, retiring -- i don't know if i can say "retiring," but he's a great guy. >> reporter: it was a job kelly appeared reluctant to accept. >> but i got something wrong and god punished me, i guess. >> reporter: having mixed success during his tenure, he clashed openly with national security adviser john bolton. kelly also fired omarosa manigault newman in the white house situation room, which she secretly recorded. >> hi. >> i'm only going to stay for a couple of minutes. these are lawyers. we've got to talk to you about

leaving the white house. >> reporter: and while kelly was credited with streamlining operations, some in the white house bristled at restrictions he imposed, including limits on access to the oval office. but the president stood by him, even as others insisted his days were numbered. >> well, here's a marine i like a lot. that we all know, we all love, he's doing a fantastic job. >> reporter: kelly was expected to announce his departure on monday, but the president beating him to it. >> we'll be announcing who will be taking john's place. it might be on an interim basis. i'll be announcing that over the next day or two, but john will be leaving at the end of the year. >> reporter: sources tell abc news the leading candidate to take over would be nick ayers, currently serving as mike pence's chief of staff. >> and the fbi's counterintelligence investigation into potential ties between the trump campaign and russia initially focused on four americans. and if they were connected to

russian interferenceelection. that's what former fbi director james comey told the republican-led house judiciary committee in a closed-door interview on friday. now, comey did not identify the americans, but said president trump was not one of them. and this morning, paris monuments and workers are cleaning up the streets. this comes after another round of violent weekend protests. abc news reporter james longman has the latest. >> reporter: the continuin france, cars on fire, clashes with police near some of paris' most famous landmarks. and for the first time, armored trucks with water cannons deployed in the french capital. this, the fourth straight saturday of nationwide french reets. nearly 1,400arst more than 130, including police,

injured. >> there's been this endless back and forth between police and now there's tear gas in the air. and it is very, very strong. >> reporter: some protesters throwing tear gas canisters back at the police. celebrated tourist destinations like the eiffel tower, closed. it all started last month in response to a new fuel tax, but that issue became a rallying cry for what's now dubbed the yellow vest movement. thousands united in anger at a rising cost of living and deep mistrust in the system. and there's particular personal dislike for president emmanuel macron. but early arrests by police averting a repeat of last week's chaos, when some yellow vests stormed the icon ic monument. but the hardliners remain, and their response to broken politics seems to be breaking everything else. >> james longman, abc news. some u.s. service members overseas will get a little taste of home for the holidays. volunteers in the north bay put can together some special care

packages. abc 7 news anchor dion lim has the story. >> we have over a hundred packages! yeah. >> reporter: packing the napa valley college jim, hundreds from this community doing a little packing of their own. this is operation with love from home. what started in 2007 as a hospital donation drive to help a workers' teenage son serving in iraq has turned to this. >> it's all community-based, volunteers, donations. we come together, we don't items that we know that are needed and missed for our service members. >> reporter: from stuffing bags to stacking what will be a thousand care packages full of the little things. >> it ranges from boot socks to tuna packs to toiletry items, recreational items. there's so much. >> reporter: each 9 1/2-pound box will go to someone like this. >> it's my son, connor, benjamin reilly is currently deployed in the middle east as a united states marine. >> reporter: corn just received

benefit a local child in need. this is the third year smart has partnered with toys for tots and other local nonprofit organizations to help kids during the gift-giving season. san francisco's crime fighters braved the bay to marae money for the make-a-wish foundation. police officers and others took a quick dip yesterday. they called it plunge for wishes. they braved 59-degree water to raise about $130,000. >> grant 13 wishes. and it's just a great event. we get everybody out and we jump in the polar waters of the bay here and everybody has a good time and we raise money for the kids to grant those wishes. >> we have command staff here, we have a recruit class here, we have a lot of our officers here. >> reporter: abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo served as of the people who took a se plunge in the bay also pulled a cable car to help the

we have a dense fog advisory until 11:00 for our east bay valleys and behind me, you can't see much, because of that. and we do have that fog extending into the san pablo bay. it's in pockets, elsewhere around the bay. and also, widespread into the san joaquin valley. it's going to take a while to burn back. we'll have that through at least about 11:00, 12:00, but it will be a dry day with a mix of clouds and sun. kind of cool out there. and then the rain arrives overnight, bringing some wet roadways for your monday morning commute. as we look outside right now towards walnut creek, you can see, it looks a little hazy out there. and that's because of the fog. visibility has been reduced to about zero in some spots. so here is live doppler 7, with the low cloud deck and the visibility on top here, you'll notice that we've got a half mile out toward the delta. just over a mile in petaluma and a quarter of a mile in santa rosa, but it remains just socked in here around livermore, concord, just three quarters of a mile. so you get the idea, even down

toward the peninsula. the san carlos airport, about four miles. sfo, no delays yet, but that could happen and delays will be stacking up across the northeast. check out the snow in memphis. icy conditions. we've got warmer air moving in over that colder air locked in at the surface. and so that's why we have that rain/snow mix and solid snow from north carolina to virginia, but look how wide this is ranging from the thunderstorms and heavy rain from florida to the carolinas and georgia. so a big mess in the southeast, while back home, we've got plenty of 40s, upper 40s, san francisco, 44 in oakland. 39 in livermore. 46 for you in fremont with 43 in san jose. it is milder out there due to all of that humidity. the fog with 11 degrees warmer than yesterday in novato at this time. so here's a look at the fog, once again. look how long it takes to kind of dissipate. it takes through the morning hours, just sitting here, through 8:00, 9:00, and then by 11:00, 12:00, we have this

clouds, a few areas of sun, and rain on the way for the overnight hours. we bring in our storm impact scale, it's a weak system, some breezy winds, some damp pavement as you get to work, perhaps or leaving tomorrow morning because it's going to take a while to get here. and when it does, it does weaken. so about 1:00, 2:00 in the morning, 3:00, passing the bay and it falls apart as it gets into the east bay by 7:00 tomorrow morning. so amounts, a few hundredths to perhaps a nent know vtenth in n. partly sunny, still the clouds will linger, 60 in free month, 58 in santa rosa. and the accuweather seven-day forecast showing that 1 on that storm impact scale tomorrow. download the accuweather app, and it will be milder when we get the sun out tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. but just by a few degrees. by friday, clouds increase, perhaps a little bit more rain. so maybe a pretty good weak to get some things done and not have weather get in the way, like it is in the southeast today.
