want to get to that major storm causing dangerous conditions on the roads right now. you see it right there. the storm slammed into north carolina and virginia, dumped two feet of snow in some areas. >> and take a look at the tree collapsing on this car in north carolina. rob is there and has the latest for us. good morning, rob. >> good morning, robin. this storm brought everything it had to the south and then some. north carolina getting more snow here than it does typically all year long. this is the most december snow they have seen in nearly 90 years. not fit for man or machine in many cases yesterday. look at this car entombed in ice. an abandoned car on this corner of the roadway. the main roads here in greensboro, it's a mess as snow continues to fall. getting around yesterday nothing

short of a nightmare. this morning, the national guard being called to come to the rescue of drivers of interstate 81 in virginia. >> we're going to deploy all-terrain vehicles, try to get to the stranded motorists, see if there is anything we can do for them. >> reporter: traffic backed up for miles. the roads now deemed impassable. this traffic caused by a major winter storm crippling parts of the south. >> i wasn't aware that this was the situation. otherwise i would have never came 81. >> reporter: in virginia alone, state police responding to more than 1,000 crashes and 1,050 -- 1,150 stuck vehicles. falling trees seen here hitting power lines. >> holy cow. >> reporter: plunging more than 357,000 into the dark and a danger to drivers. >> an accident, 519 east john street. tree on a car. >> reporter: a tree limb crushing this car. the driver not surviving. plow drivers saying they have never seen it this bad. >> we have been at this all day since 6:00 this morning. >> you've been working this all day and you still just can't keep up, can you?

>> can't keep up. >> reporter: the snow so bad in greensboro where they got a foot, even this four-wheel-drive plow getting stuck. >> that's stuck in there good. >> reporter: not budging so the driver had to call in for back-up and after some help from a bigger plow, we were finally able to shake it loose from the snow. >> what did we learn from that episode? >> stay away from the deeper snow. >> there is a lot of that. >> reporter: this massive storm also wreaking havoc at the airport. more than 1,000 flights canceled across the region, and most of those flights cancelled are out of the charlotte airport. most of the airlines are canceling flights today. the schools as you would imagine are closed. we love the narrative that the south can't handle the snow, but this storm would give even the hardiest northern cities a run for its money. we need temperatures to get above 32. >> thank you so much, rob, and i wish we could nudge it out too. i wish i could hip check this right out of there.

it will happen. you will see the radar clear out by later this afternoon, but i want to show you what's happened in some of the other areas. these pictures just amazing. boone, north carolina, that is a car, and a look at blacksburg, virginia, where they had their third largest december snowfall ever, 13 inches. yeah, cars encased there too. so will that freezing stick around? it will for the next 24 hours. you're not going to break out of it. this is tuesday morning, the freezing line stays with us. cecilia, i'm going to have a whole lot more on how cold it's going to get in a moment. >> thanks. we'll turn to yet another white house shakeup. this perplexing even those in the president's inner circle. president trump caught many off guard this weekend when he announced his chief of staff, john kelly, will be out by the end of the year. but that wasn't all the man who seemed all but guaranteed to take the job, well, he is now not getting it. our chief white house correspondent jonathan karl has the latest on really what have been head-spinning developments, jon. good morning. >> reporter: goomorning, cecilia. with the departure of john kelly, president trump is now

trying to find his third chief of staff in less than two years, an unprecedented level of turnover in the west wing. this morning, only one thing is clear. john kelly is on his way out as chief of staff. his replacement, though, entirely unclear. >> john kelly will be leaving. i don't know if i can say retiring, but he is a great guy. john kelly will be leaving at the end of the year. >> reporter: while president trump frequently touted kelly's service -- >> here's a marine i like a lot that we all know, we all love. he's doing a fantastic job. four-star general john kelly. stand up. >> reporter: their relationship had deteriorated to the point of hostility. over the past few weeks, the two have barely been on speaking terms and the president didn't hide the fact he didn't always see eye to eye with his chief of staff. >> look, we get along well. there are certain things i love what he does, and there are

certain things that i don't like that he does. >> reporter: the president's top advisers expected mike pence's chief of staff, nick ayers, to replace kelly, but over the weekend, ayers took himself out of the running. now the search is once again on. >> we'll be announcing who will be taking john's place. it might be on an interim basis. i'll be announcing that over the next day or two. >> reporter: white house officials say the president is looking at several possible staffers for chief of staff, including congressman mark meadows, former deputy campaign manager david bossie, treasury secretary steve mnuchin, acting attorney general matt whitaker and omb director mick mulvaney. we'll see when that decision comes down. the departure of kelly, george, becomes official at the end of the year. >> we don't know if any of those people even want the job. the choice of a new white house chief of staff set against the backdrop of escalating legal troubles for president trump on two fronts, the russia investigation and those illegal

payments made to stormy daniels and karen mcdougal during the campaign. a top house democrat now says those payments may be grounds for impeachment and our chief congressional correspondent mary bruce is tracking the story. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. the president is putting his own spin on this story saying he is happy with what he is reading and that he is, quote, totally cleared. but that is not the picture that these documents paint. actually, far from it, and now, the big question on the hill this morning, could these new revelations push house members to impeach? as the fallout grows from those bombshell court filings, president trump insists he's in the clear. >> i think it's all turning around very nicely. >> reporter: but the documents tell a very different story, putting the president in growing legal and political jeopardy. and democrats are sounding the alarm. >> this investigation is now starting to put the president in serious legal crosshairs and he should be worried and the whole country should be worried. >> reporter: on one front, robert mueller's investigation is revealing new evidence of russian efforts to build a political alliance and political

synergy. and despite the president declaring himself in the clear, his top ally not saying that's the case. >> my view would be that you're not totally cleared or anyone, until bob mueller shuts down his office and hands in the keys. >> reporter: but the big legal hurdle facing the president may be the contention from federal prosecutors in new york, that president trump's fixer, michael cohen, gave illegal hush money to two women during the campaign to remain silent about alleged affairs, and that he acted in coordination with and at the direction of individual-1, donald trump. that could potentially implicate the president in federal campaign finance felonies, and a top democrat says it could be grounds for impeachment. >> well, they would be impeachable offenses. whether they are important enough to justify an impeachment is a different question. >> reporter: and even if the congress doesn't act to impeach, the president's legal trouble may be far from over. >> there's a very real prospect that on the day donald trump leaves office, the justice department may indict him.

>> reporter: now, on the question of impeachment, democratic leaders have made clear they want to wait and see what mueller finds, see his report before they make any moves, but one thing that is definitely clear here, georgel, when democrats take control in a few weeks, they'll do everything they can to get to the bottom of this. >> no question about that. thanks. let's bring in our chief legal analyst, dan abrams. let's start with the campaign final allegation. the prosecutors made it pretty clear even though they are not saying they are indicting the president now, they basically accused him of a serious felony. >> you need to read the sentencing memo because it really makes clear how seriously they treat this crime first of all. secondly, they're saying it was done to subvert the campaign finance laws. it was done to impact the election and it was done in coordination and at the direction of donald trump. these prosecutors are saying, this matters. this is an important crime, and they are essentially saying that donald trump was behind it. >> the question is, can or will they indict? there has been justice

department guidance against indicting a sitting president. what other options do they have? >> well, look, i still think there's a possibility that they could indict. they could certainly at the very least make him an unindicted co-conspirator, meaning that they could announce publicly his name in a document, which essentially says he we believe, is a conspirator in here, but we're not going to indict him. they could also wait if he doesn't run for re-election or doesn't win re-election, certainly the statute of limitations would allow him to prosecute after, but this is astonishing. this is not mueller's team, and the 17 angry democrats that the president has been talking about. >> the southern district of new york. >> this is the southern district of new york prosecutors. this is a separate team who is making this statement. >> meantime, mueller's team has established that the russians were involved in a conspiracy to interfere in our elections. they established contacts between people in trump's orbit and the russians. they know trump's team lied about it. what more does mueller have to

do to connect the dots to show a felony there? >> two huge indictments. 12 russians, 13 russians for hacking and taking identities and sowing discord. the question is, can you link the trump campaign to either of those major indictments? i think that is the big outstanding question here, but when they say that michael cohen is offering information at the core of the russia investigation, that should make the trump team nervous. >> much more to come. dan abrams, thanks very much. robin? we have two stories overseas. we begin with those protests erupting in paris. new scenes emerging as protesters took to the streets in paris for the fourth weekend in a row. officials deployed over 50,000 officers across the country, but they were overwhelmed by the crowds. more than 70 people injured. popular tourist sites like the eiffel tower was shut down on saturday. the anger originally directed at a proposed fuel tax hike only growing after the plan was withdrawn. the french president is said to

address that nation tonight. >> incredible images there. we also want to turn to that terrifying scene in italy. new video showing a stampede at a nightclub that left six people dead and more than 50 people injured. people have launched two investigations. our foreign correspondent james longman has the latest. >> reporter: it's total chaos as revelers rush out of this italian nightclub, and then -- horror. as the structure gives out, sending dozens falling, crushing others below to death. investigators are reviewing that bystander's footage of the accident from early saturday trying to figure out how the accident happened which left six dead and dozens injured. italian police telling abc news two parallel criminal investigations are now under way. one, whether the club was dangerously overcrowded. legally, the venue is only supposed to hold around 800 people, but almost 1,400 tickets had been sold for the event that night, but it's unclear how many were actually there. ticket sales are disorganized in italy and events often oversold.

that's one theory investigators are looking into. police also looking into the suspected use of a chemical set off inside the club like pepper spray, which they say may have triggered the stampede. this witness describing everyone struggles to breathe after the spray. the youngest of the victims was just 14 years old, and there are reports that it was also a minor who is suspected to have sprayed that substance, but police have yet to confirm that. george. >> what a tragedy. james, thanks very much. we're going to turn now to the search now for a serial arsonist targeting jehovah's witnesses in washington state. the string of attacks began in march. just this weekend a house of worship was burned to the ground and officials looking for this suspect. linsey davis has the story. >> reporter: this raging fire at a washington state church is the latest in what investigators say could be the work of a serial arsonist. >> this was a targeted situation of some sort that we're still trying to sort out. >> reporter: investigators are looking into whether these ferocious flames sparked early

friday morning are tied to this suspect caught here on surveillance video. authorities say apparently setting fire to this kingdom hall in western washington back in march. this latest fire is one of five attacks this year involving arson, shots fired and a suspicious device all aimed at jehovah's witness houses of worship, all in the same county. >> what are they going to do next? what is their motivation? >> reporter: this man, seen here buying fireplace logs back in july, is now considered a person of interest. >> we're actually looking to solve the previous crimes and also we're looking to the people and citizens to come forward. >> reporter: authorities are now beefing up security in the area. the atf is offering a reward of up to $36,000 for any information that leads to an arrest. jehovah's witnesses are known to be peaceful people. they can't determine any possible motivation for this. >> it's baffling. >> thank you, linsey. george, now to wall street.

investors on edge after that brutal week. the worst since march. the dow jones shedding 4.5%. rebecca jarvis is here with more you need to know. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning, robin, yeah, and for some context here, this year has been the best and worst of times for that retirement savings account. if you had put $1,000 into stocks at the start of the year, you would have at the peak of the market in september, have made about $100, but given the last couple of weeks of dramatic selloffs, that investment of $1,000 has now lost about $15, and there are two key issues behind this. first of all, uncertainty over china and second, fears that, robin, the best is behind us in terms of our own economy here in the united states going into next year. >> and as you always say, the market does not like uncertainty. now for people who have not invested in the stock market, there is reason for them to be concerned too. >> reporter: well, that's right, robin. even if you don't have a penny

>> reporter: this morning, this former beauty queen seen here during a talent competition could end up trading in her gowns for jailhouse stripes. former miss kentucky, ramsey bearse, is accused of sexting with a teenage boy on snapchat. >> we love it. i'm miss kentucky. >> reporter: the 28-year-old appeared in a west virginia courtroom. investigators say she admitted that she sent a 15-year-old at least four topless pictures of herself between august and october, according to the criminal complaint. >> if found guilty, it's up to 20 years in jail and $20,000 in fines. >> reporter: an investigation was launched last week when the victim's mother called the sheriff's office to complain when she discovered the nude photos on her son's cell phone. >> are you sending nude photos to your students? >> reporter: the middle school where she teaches science has suspended her. her alleged victim is a former student. >> is there anything you would like to say? comment you would like to make?

everyone. kelsey berreth is a pilot and a mother. her family said she made cinnamon rolls on thanksgiving that were still on the stove when she went missing. they are confident that she was not planning on leaving. this morning, a nationwide search is on for missing mother and pilot kelsey berreth. >> she was last seen wearing a white shirt, a gray sweater, blue pants, possibly blue jeans, with a brown purse and white shoes. >> reporter: the 29-year-old who has a 1-year-old daughter was last seen more than two weeks ago on thanksgiving day leaving this safeway grocery store in woodland park, colorado, but police say that her cell phone pinged several days after she went missing in idaho, roughly 700 miles away. >> it makes us wonder what she is doing us up there, what the phone is, you know, tentially because she may not be there. maybe the phone is. >> reporter: police searched her home. they found her makeup, suitcases and cars all untouched.

a lot of headlines to get to this morning starting with that deadly winter storm bringing up to two feet of snow to some areas causing thousands of accidents on the road. let's get back to rob in greensboro, north carolina, one of the hardest hit areas. good morning again, rob. >> good morning, cecilia. you can see the snow is still coming down. the roads are a mess. there are some cars out, but you can see the commuters on foot there that are walking in the middle of the road because that's the best they can do as far as the sidewalks go around here. driving yesterday was a mess. we saw a number of spinouts, and cars getting stuck on the ramps as they tried to head out. interstate 81 out of virginia, at one point the locals kaling on the national guard for help there. this picture out of blacksburg, not too far from roanoke, and blacksburg and other spots getting more than that. in some cases, 20 inches of snow. another picture of cars in boone, north carolina. here in the more populated areas along the i-85 corridor, the

the tuskegee airmen. a very special place in your heart. >> david kerley reached out to me over the weekend. he wanted to make sure i saw this and i want to make sure you see it too. one of the tuskegee airmen reached his 99th birthday over the weekend. we're talking about charles mcgee. he took to the co-pilot's over in a flight over virginia in his long, illustrious military career. he flew 409 combat missions serving in three wars. he said, quote, if you are scared, you're in the wrong business flying. as you said, george, my father, colonel lawrence roberts, also served with the tuskegee airmen. this is my favorite moment in 2003, went to tuskegee, flew in a plane just like my daddy flew in world war ii. those incredible servicemen, their incredible courage, the distinction that they served in world war ii, and daddy would have turned 96 yesterday. >> wow. >> it was a great day because he was in a sky box cheering on the

"gma" spoke with a group of college students to find out how important academic excellence is to them. >> you strive to get the best grades, though you should also understand that if it doesn't happen, at least you tried. >> we also are kind of an environment where people do strive for as, and there is that pressure and it's hard to kind of ignore it. >> i don't think it's necessarily the case that everyone, you know, is automatically going to expect you to have perfect grades in order to give you a shot. >> reporter: this is pretty interesting. apple founder steve jobs finished high school with a 2.65 gpa. harry potter author j.k. rowling graduated from university with roughly a "c" average and even dr. martin luther king of morehouse graduated with just one a. >> he is not saying not to work hard and there is anything wrong with doing it, but he is saying don't have a mania for it and stretch your wings. >> he cites a study that was done back in the 1960s and says if you are a "b" average student, those tend to be the
