good morning. i'm kendis g good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm janai norman. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." france is on a heightened terror alert level after a gunman's attack on a christmas market in the city of strasbourg killed at least three people. that suspect got away. he is known to authorities and has a criminal record. he was also on a terror-related watch list. it is sentencing day for the president's former fixer michael cohen. he could get several years in prison for campaign finance violations over hush money payments. prosecutors say they were made at the president's direction. he'll also be sentenced for lying to congress. the white supremacist who ran down and killed a demonstrator in charlottesville, virginia last summer is likely to spend the rest of his life in prison. that's the jury's recommendation

president has sat down with, as he calls them, chuck and nancy since, of course, the democrats had huge gains in the midterms. a lot of us were wondering what tone are they going to strike. are they going to make nice? are they going to be friendly? are they going to try to work together? are you going to see democrats coming in and really putting their foot down? man, they went way beyond that. essentially seeing what we're going to be seeing over the next two years. this was chuck and nancy, schumer and pelosi, coming in and setting that tone. sending the president a clear message, look, there is a new sheriff in town and this is the way we're going to operate. >> we learned nancy pelosi had a quick follow-up phone call with the president. no agreement yet. if the shut down happens, we're talking federal offices, even post offices shutting down just a few days before christmas. we'll have more on the fallout from this saga on "start here" later this morning. listen for it on apple podcasts or your favorite podcasting app. kendis? janai?

>> all right. brad, that oval office dustup may have paved the path for nancy pelosi to regain her old job as house speaker. she reportedly is on the verge of a deal to gain the support of a handful ever democrats who opposed her leadership. sources say she is poised to limit her speakership to four more years at the most and support term limits for the top three positions in the caucus. the time may we running out for three people missing inside an abandoned coal mine in west virginia. the man and two women entered the mine after midnight friday. they range in age from 21 to 31. search teams had to turn back after running out of air. abc's david kerley has more. >> reporter: the search in the abandoned mine in southern west virginia is for three people. a fourth person walked out of the mine saying they are still alive. >> i couldn't believe she went in there. i mean, it's just mind-boggling, you know? i just know how dangerous it is. >> reporter: it was 3:00 a.m. saturday morning when the four were able to enter the mine illegally, allegedly looking for copper wire. they were reported missing nearly 24 hours later.

it was a day later that that man walked out, telling authorities where the other man and two women are. in the oxygen-deprived mine. >> usually these things end up not very good, and so we still got some real heavy lifting to get to a good outcome here. >> reporter: national guard troops are helping state and local authorities in this dangerous effort. an eight-man rescue team has already been 3/4 of a mile into the mine with no sign of the missing. another effort may happen overnight on tuesday. david kerley, abc news, washington. a chinese executive in the meantime, is out on bail after spending ten days in jail in vancouver, canada. she was arrested at the request her of trying to violate trade sanctions against iran. she could be extradited to the u.s. but president trump says he would consider intervening in the case if it helps reach a

trade deal with china. in the meantime, a former canadian diplomat has been detained in beijing, an apparent retaliation. "time" magazine's 2018 person of the year is really people of the year. the honor goes to eight journalists who were killed this past year or imprisoned. it calls them the guardians. there are four different covers for the issue showing columnist jamal khashoggi, the staff of the annapolis capitol gazette paper and reporters now jailed in the philippines and myanmar. president trump was the runner-up. time now for a little holiday spirit starting with the first lady melania trump going a bit casual in a plaid top for a toys for tots event in washington, d.c. >> n sreedow some. the toy drive was helped by the marine corps reserve. the toys will be distributed to needy kids. >> and by dressing down, you mean that costs under $10,000. >> you know what? i feel a little bad that we just focus on the clothes of the first lady.

>> reporter: we must do better and we are better than the images that we witnessed over this weekend. >> reporter: the police commissioner called the video disturbing, especially as a dad. he goes on to say, "nypd cops have a very tough job. we're looking at all available video to determine why certain decisions were made." sources tell abc news that video includes a recording of what happened leading up to the incident that the public hasn't seen yet. as the nypd and the district attorney investigate, two peace officers involved will be placed on modified duty. headley's family is demanding more. >> i want people fired. i want people fired. >> reporter: her family says headley was there trying to get daycare vouchers so she could work. she was waiting for four hours and couldn't find a place to sit so she sat on the floor. witnesses say local security asked her to leave and when she reportedly wouldn't move they called police. >> somebody get the baby. >> reporter: all charges against headley have been dropped.

in france. the city of strasbourg on lockdown. a gunman opened fire around 8:00 p.m. near the city's famous christmas market. the moment shared online. some needing urgent care on the street. witnesses describing the terror. we thought it was fireworks, this woman says. everyone was running. families with their kids who were falling to the ground. people sheltering wherever they could. some taking cover in this restaurant. armed police swarming the neighborhood searching for a man already on a watch list and identified as a potential national security threat. residents ordered to stay inside. shop owners shuttering their stores. strasbourg's famous christmas market normally draws 2 million visitors a year. it lies empty. police in europe have been on high alert this time of year after a truck plowed into a christmas market in berlin in 2016 killing 12 people.

we're told very soon after this incident happened the police were able to identify the suspect. the man is apparently a known criminal who has been on their radar. there is a major manhunt now under way. a terror investigation has been launched. we know they're searching multiple locations beyond that market neighborhood. ian pannell, abc news, london. >> and as a result, security is beefed up all across france this morning. a police union official says officers went to the suspect's house to arrest him before the attack but he was not there. a search of the home turned up explosive materials. turning back here at home, president trump is ncns he would bempeached. >> the president told reuters the two hush money payments before the 2016 election did not break campaign finance rules. he said it's hard to impeach somebody who didn't do anything wrong. mr. trump also brushed aside links between a number of associates and the russians

are redoubling their efforts to find three people inside an abandoned coal mine. a fourth person who escaped the mine about 30 miles south of charleston has provided new information about two women and a man inside. they were first reported missing after they had been inside for more than 20 hours. >> usually these things end up not very good so we've still got some very heavy lifting to get to a good outcome here. >> workers are now pumping water out of an alternate entry to the mine and pumping in fresh air. any criminal charges are on hold while rescue efforts are under way. we have alarming news about the climate in the arctic. the region has been warmer in the past five years than at any other time in recorded history. that's about 120 years. the arctic is warming about twice as fast as the rest of the planet. u.s. scientists say this is unchartered territory and the warming in the arctic is increasingly affecting weather here in the united states. well, british prime minister

so that's a woman taking cover during a gunfight between a suspect and three officers trying to serve a warrant in houston. the man wanted for battering his girlfriend took his own life after a five-hour standoff and while barricaded inside a home, he shot and wounded a sheriff's office sergeant and two agents from the attorney general's office as well. well, authorities outside denver are intensifying their search for clues in the disappearance of a young mother. >> kelsey berreth vanished without a trace nearly three weeks ago on thanksgiving as new questions are being raised about her fiance. here is abc's clayton sandell. >> reporter: the fiance of missing mom kelsey berreth seen leaving an attorney's office in

colorado springs. >> patrick, why don't you talk to us? >> reporter: patrick frazee refusing to answer questions, putting the couple's 1-year-old daughter in a car seat and driving off. new surveillance video shows the last time the 29-year-old was seen shopping with her daughter in a supermarket on thanksgiving day. police say frazee told me that's the day he last saw berreth, picking up the couple's child. police say the couple live apart. >> sir, can you tell us what's going on? >> this is private property. this is a private road. >> reporter: at the police press conference frazee was a no-show. >> chief, i understand that patrick was invited. why is he not here? >> that is a question you'd have to answer -- ask him. >> reporter: police still searching for clues after a mysterious text message from berreth's phone to her job telling them she was going to miss the next of work. later her phone was detected 700 miles away in idaho. investigators say they have no suspects in berreth's

>> this is my little boy roger. hey, roger, you're on tv tonight. >> reporter: his physique was astonishing, bulging shoulders, ripped arms and shredded abs. he towered at 6'7" on his hind legs and weighed nearly 200 pounds. this 2015 photo of him crushing a metal can with his bare paws went viral, making him famous around the world as he leapt to stardom, but just days ago roger the red kangaroo died of old age at the kangaroo sanctuary in australia where he spent most of his life. he was 12 years old. in a tweet, australia's official tourism account called the beloved kangaroo a true icon. >> it's a very sad day here today. for we have lost our beautiful boy roger. >> reporter: chris barnes, the founder of the refuge, posting this heartfelt message to facebook. >> roger grew up to be a kangaroo that people from all over the world have grown to

temper tantrum and nancy pelosi had some particularly harsh words about the president when she described the meeting to a group of democrats on capitol hill. according to an aide in the room, pelosi said the wall, quote, is like a manhood thing for him, as if manhood could ever be associated with him. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. >> do you think mike pence was like homer simpson in that image where he -- >> just faded into the background. like oy. tough day for mike pence. >> mike pence is like, my name is bennett and i ain't in it. pelosi said that she later talked to the president by phone and they discussed a path forward. the late-night comics had plenty to say about it and that's ahead in this half hour. well, president trump's longtime lawyer michael cohen will learn his fate today after pleading guilty to several charges including campaign finance violations linked to

president trump. federal prosecutors are asking that cohen get four to five years in prison. they say he did not cooperate fully after admitting to making illegal hush payments to two women who said they had affairs with trump. the judge will also sentence cohen for lying to congress in a case brought by special counsel robert mueller's office. and lawyers for the president's former national security adviser michael flynn say he should be spared prison time. flynn has pled guilty to lying to the fbi and has cooperated extensively with prosecutors. his attorney's filing is similar to special counsel robert mueller, which said flynn should spend no time behind bars. he'll be sentenced next week. and a federal judge has ordered the porn actress stormy daniels to pay president trump's attorneys' fees for their legal battle. daniels' defamation lawsuit against the president was dismissed in october. the judge says daniels must pay nearly $300,000 in attorneys' fees. trump's attorney had requested about $100,000 additional.

daniels' attorney, michael avenatti, says daniels will never have to pay a dime because she will receive much more from trump in a separate lawsuit. well, turning to breaking news overnight, france has raised its terror alert level following a terror attack in the eastern city of strasbourg. >> yeah, the city is on france's border with germany where police were searching vehicles for the suspect overnight. the gunman opened fire at strasbourg's christmas market, killing at least three people, injuring 11 others. strasbourg is home to the european parliament which was locked down for several hours after the attack. abc's maggie rulli gets us up to date. >> reporter: chaos at a world-famous christmas market in strasbourg in what authorities believe is an act of terror. >> translator: it really sounded like explosions. we thought it was fireworks and a few seconds later we understood it was a gun. >> reporter: a shooter opening fire on a crowd around 8:00 p.m.
