anpe firnear scene unfolding as strasbourg, which attracts 2 million visitors a year. at least 3 people killed, 11 others injured, many in critical condition needing urgent care in the middle of the street. >> i heard two or three gunshots at first, which i first thought were just firecrackers. >> reporter: witnesses describing the moment they heard shots. >> after the shots started again, people actually started like yelling, and i could hear crowds running away. that's when i realized that there was actually a shooting going on. >> reporter: people sheltering wherever they could. some taking cover in this restaurant. residents ordered to stay indoors as shop owners shuttered their storefronts. people even locked inside the european union's parliament in the city as armed police swarmed neighborhoods searching for a man who was already on a watch list already and identified as a potential national security threat. the military confronting the suspect twice, but he managed to

escape. overnight border officials checking cars making sure he didn't escape into germany. just two years ago another popular christmas market in europe was the target of a deadly attack. a truck plowed through a crowd in berlin killing 12 people. now this morning the question despite all the security precautions, how could this happen again. the suspect was reportedly sentenced in a previous civil case. officials say he was on a watch list for people who had potentially been radicalized. but still no official word on a motive for the attack. well, today is sentencing day for president trump's former lawyer, michael cohen. he could spend the next several years in prison. prosecutors say he violated campaign finance laws at the direction of the president. but in a new interview, mr. trump makes it clear he's taking no blame for cohen's actions. abc's kenneth moton has more from washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis. michael cohen was not only one of the closest people to president trump, he will become the first person sentenced in

the russia investigation whose crime directly involved the president. michael cohen set to learn his fate in a new york federal court today. >> mr. cohen has cooperated. >> reporter: president trump's former longtime personal attorney pled guilty to tax evasion, making false statements to a bank and campaign finance violations. in the separate russia investigation by special counsel robert mueller, cohen admitted to lying to congress about the president's business dealings with russia during the 2016 campaign. federal prosecutors in new york are asking for substantial prison time of 3 1/2 years saying cohen sought to influence the 2016 election from the shadows motivated by personal greed and ambition. >> because he's a weak person and not a very smart person. >> reporter: president trump has worked to distance himself from cohen who says his former boss directed him to make hush money payments to two women in 2016 to keep them quiet about their alleged affairs with trump years ago. in a new interview reuters asked the president if he had discussed campaign finance laws with cohen. trump's response, michael cohen

is a lawyer. i assume he would know what he's doing. the president went on to say the payments were not a campaign contribution. quote, if it were, it's only civil, and if even it's only civil, there was no violation based on what we did. on talk of impeachment, president trump told reuters he's not concerned, quote, i think that the people would revolt if that happened. in that interview the president said if any trump associates had contacts with russians during his campaign, it was, quote, peanuts stuff. according to the special counsel michael cohen has provided useful and credible information in the russia investigation. janai, kendis. >> cohen's sentencing expected at 11:00 a.m. eastern time. thank you. turning to the showdown in the oval office, the president and top democrats in congress going toe-to-toe on live tv. the president threatening to shut down the government if he doesn't get funding for his border wall, and he raised eyebrows with a string of misleading statements. democratic leader nancy pelosi later criticized his demand for the wall.

according to an aide, pelosi said, quote, it's like a manhood thing for him, as if manhood could ever be associated with him. abc's stephanie ramos has more. >> reporter: in a dramatic oval office confrontation -- >> this has spiraled downward. >> reporter: -- democratic leaders nancy pelosi and chuck schumer together with the president clashed big time over border wall funding. >> but there are no votes in the house, a majority of votes for a wall no matter where you -- that'dohaotes. >> if i needed the votes for the wall in the house, i would have them in one session. >> then go do it. >> it doesn't help because we need ten democrats in the senate. >> the fact is you do not have the votes in the house. >> nancy, i do. >> reporter: with a december 21st deadline to avoid a government shutdown, the president wants at least $5 billion for the wall. democrats are offering 1.3 billion as part of the overall funding package. >> people are pouring into our country including terrorists. we have terrorists. we caught ten terrorists. >> reporter: according to the department of homeland security,

the department does block ten known or suspected terrorists a day from traveling to or attempting to enter the u.s. but the state department says there is no credible information that any member of a terrorist group traveled through mexico to enter the u.s. >> a lot of the wall is built. it's been very effective. >> reporter: but the president's wall has not been built. according to the department of homeland security, the wall he's referring to is a pre-existing refurbished wall and fencing. democrats say they want to work off the same set of facts. >> we don't want to contradict the president when he was putting forth figures that had no reality to them. >> reporter: pelosi says the government is not worth shutting down over a border wall fight but president trump isn't budging. >> i am proud to shut down the government for border security. >> reporter: leaders schumer and pelosi say they've offered the president two options to keep the government open as they work this out. they say each option would get a majority of the vote in the house, 60 votes in the senate and will avoid a government

shutdown. in washington, stephanie ramos, abc news. >> busy days ahead there in washington. a chinese tech executive at the center of a diplomatic crisis has now been granted bail in vancouver, canada. she was arrested at the request of u.s. officials and is accused of violating trade sanctions against iran. she's being forced to stay in canada at least for now. but president trump says he may intervene in the case if it helps seal a new trade deal with china. in the meantime, an apparent retaliation. a former canadian diplomat has now been detained in beijing. chinese officials said overnight they have no information about his detention. time now for a look at your weather for this wednesday morning. a powerful storm is dumping heavy rain and snow in the pacific northwest. floodingldams

on this highway. >> whoa. >> look right there. a woman carrying a small child barely escapes getting hit by an outof control truck that crashed across the road. this happened in vietnam. look again. you see her running away just in time. she came within a few feet of being run over. she and that baby are thankfully okay. well, crews in west virginia are pumping fresh air into an abandoned coal mine in hopes of finding three missing people. the one man and two women along with another man entered the mine friday night. the older man walked out two days later and told officials where he believes the others are located. but rescue workers have not been able to locate them. the four allegedly entered the mine to gather copper wiring that was inside. a domestic violence suspect is dead and three law rs were wounded after a long standoff in houston. the officers were trying to serve a warrant for a man accused of hitting his girlfriend. they say he opened fire and barricaded himself inside a home for five hours before taking his

new surveillance video has beenr been missing for nearly three weeks. >> kelsey berreth vanished without a trace. and now questions are being raised about her fiance. abc's clayton sandell has the story. >> patrick. >> reporter: the fiance of missing mom kelsey berreth seen leaving an attorney's office in colorado springs. patrick, why don't you talk to us? patrick frazee refusing to answer questions putting the couple's 1-year-old daughter in a car seat and driving off. patrick, what is the text message kelsey sent you on the 25th? >> reporter: new surveillance show the last time the 29-year-old was seen shopping with her daughter this a supermarket on thanksgiving day. police say frazee told them that's the day he saw berreth picking up the child. police say the couple live apart. >> sir, can you tell us what's going on? >> this is private property. this is a private road. >> reporter: at the police press conference frazee was a no-show. >> chief, i understand frazee

was invited. why is he not here? >> that's a question you'd have to ask him. >> reporter: still looking for clues after a message to her job november 25th telling them she was going to miss the next week of work. later that day, her phone was also detected 700 miles away in idaho. investigators say they have no suspects in berreth's disappearance and tress this is it still a missing persons case. clayton sandell, abc news, colorado springs. charges have been dropped against a new york woman whose baby was ripped from her arms during her arrest. video of the tug-of-war between officers and jazmine headley sparked outrage. witnesses say headley sat on the floor of a social welfare office for hours while waiting to speak to a supervisor. officers were called when she refused to get up. hadley had a message for her supporters after walking out of jail. >> i haven't got to read all the articles and just all of the great things and all of the love and i'm accepting it, and i'm just so grateful to everyone,

and i'm just happy to be free, and i just need to see my boy. >> reporter: the officers involved have been placed on modified leave. headley still faces charges in a separate case for alleged credit card fraud. in sports a major new lawsuit in the nfl. the city of oakland is suing the raiders claiming the team's move to las vegas is illegal. the city accuses the team and the league of violating the league's relocation policies. the suit also seeks to recover lost revenue. the raiders have been scheduled to move to vegas for the 2020 season. the longtime former host of "the price is right" is celebrating a milestone this morning. bob barker paid a visit to the show via skype to celebrate his 95th birthday and chatted with current host drew carey. they even had a special cake for him on stage. barker left the show in 2007 after 35 years as host. happy birthday.mo p
