good mor good morning. i'm janai norman. >> and i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines we're following this thursday morning on "world news now." president trump's former lawyer michael cohen is expected to continue cooperating in the russia investigation after being sentenced to three years in prison. and the president may face more legal jeopardy now that a major publisher has confessed to making illegal hush money payments on his behalf. their faces were dirty but a man and two women are safe after spending nearly five days in a west virginia coal mine. their families say they went into the abandoned mine seeking copper wire that they intended to sell. more details on how they survived coming up. a civilian pilot is in serious condition after his cold war era jet crashed during a training exercise in hawaii.

the parent company of "the national enquirer" is now admitting it shelled out hush money to silence stories that were damaging to president trump before the election. cecilia vega has the details. >> reporter: just two hours after michael cohen was sentenced, another bombshell. the u.s. attorney's office announcing a cooperation agreement with the company that publishes "the national enquirer" a.m.i. a.m.i.'s ceo david pecker a close friend of president trump. prosecutors say just two months after trump descended that escalator and announced he was running, trump then met with david pecker and michael cohen. according to court documents released, "the enquirer" publisher offered to help deal with negative stories related to the presidential candidate's relationships with women and they did. in fact, just three months before the election, a.m.i. tells prosecutors they bought the story of "playboy" playmate karen mcdougal. >> there were real feelings between the two of us. >> reporter: a.m.i. acknowledges

they bought her story in order to bury it, a practice known as catch and kill. they say they worked in cooperation with and at the request and suggestion of one or more people on the campaign to make sure mcdougal did not publicize damaging allegations about trump before the election and thereby influence that election. in the deal, which was signed in september, a.m.i. admits they knew this would break campaign finance laws but they did it anyway. at the same time americans in supermarkets across the country were seeing these images on a.m.i.'s tabloid covers. "hillary's failed secret lie detector test." "hillary's two secret strokes." "hillary, six months to live." well, democrats may be talking about impeachment, but president trump says he is not at all concerned by that. in a new interview by reuters he said people would revolt if he was impeached and it's hard to impeach somebody who hasn't done anything wrong.

cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. >> our thanks to cecilia there. another big day in washington. michael cohen is now facing three years in prison as he continues to cooperate with investigators from special counsel robert mueller's office. cohen says he arranged the hush money payments at the direction of president trump and he told the judge that he agreed time and again to cover up what he called trump's dirty deeds out of loyalty. but the judge who also sentenced cohen for lying to congress said he was motivated by personal greed and ambition. and back to washington where the secretaries of state and defense will brief house lawmakers today about the murder of "washington post" columnist jamal khashoggi. mike pompeo and jim mattis, you'll recall, previously told senators there is no smoking gun linking the saudi crown prince to his death. >> but the cia director has told senators there is zero chance the crown prince wasn't involved. brad mielke has more. >> we've seen a lot of outrage over the death of jamal khashoggi. in the two months since his murder, one thing we have not

seen is any action. well, yesterday the senate actually advanced a bill that would potentially withdraw the u.s. support of the saudi war in yemen. i go to abc's miriam khan, she covers the senate for us. i go, whoa, stuff is happening, right? she goes not so fast. >> mitch mcconnell himself made it explicitly clear he doesn't support this resolution. he doesn't think it's the proper response to the saudis. and the house of representatives also made it clear they're not going to address this resolution before the end of the year. even if it made it to the president's desk, it's unlikely he would even sign it. >> she said it's a risky move to punish the saudis who have been a key ally in the region, but critics say if your ally is flouting international law, how do you tell your rivals to obey it.

they could face charges for illegally entering that mine. well, a series of major winter storms are marching across the country. >> utah highway patrol says it handled more than 250 accidents and crashes one day alone, including this large pile-up on highway 40 just as the evening commute began last night. now, this morning's commute will be rough along the gulf coast. accuweather's melissa constanzer has the details. melissa? >> kendis, janai, there is a big storm system here brewing up over texas, and as it strengthens, it's really going to fire up, bringing the rain in the gulf of mexico, 1 to 3 inches of rain possible and we'll see some heavy snow on the backside. some places will pick up 1 to 3 inches of snow. as the storm system then treks east, here's going to be the problem, picks up more gulf moisture here, and we are talking about more heavy rain. another problem will be where we already have snow on the ground. this could up the risk of

sentenced to three years in prison. >> michael cohen apologized for his role in paying off two women ahead of the election saying he repeatedly agreed to cover up what he called donald trump's dirty deeds. then another stunning announcement, the parent company of "the national enquirer" run by the president's longtime friend is now helping prosecutors, admitting to buying and burying negative stories about the president. all of this a big deal. here is abc's tara palmeri. >> reporter: michael cohen blowing past reporters outside a manhattan federal court. the president's longtime lawyer and fixer pleading for leniency before a judge sentenced him to three years in prison. an emotional cohen blaming trump for his, quote, path of darkness rather than light and leading him to, quote, cover up his dirty deeds. cohen pled guilty to eight felony charges brought by the u.s. attorney in the southern district of new york, including campaign finance violations

related to those hush money payments made to two women during the 2016 presidential campaign. cohen told prosecutors he arranged the payments at the direction of then candidate trump. two hours later another bombshell. the u.s. attorney announcing that they have struck a cooperation agreement with the company that owns "the national enquirer" and publisher david pecker. a longtime friend of trump. court papers state that two months after trump announced his candidacy he and cohen met with pecker where they agreed his company a.m.i. would, quote, help deal with negative stories about the presidential candidate's relationships with women. a.m.i. acknowledged they bought playboy bunny karen mcdougal's affair with trump in order to bury it, a practice known as catch and kill, just three months before the election. >> a.m.i. admitted in court documents that they knew they were breaking campaign finance laws but they did it anyway. tara palmeri, abc news, washington. in respect >> so interesting there. well, the democratic leader nancy pelosi has sealed a deal.

expectedbi by term limits in exchange for the support of several of her colleagues who wanted her out. that means that she will no longer serve after four more years. the proposal calls for the top three democratic leadership positions to be limited to three terms and there is an option for a fourth term if they have the support of 2/3 of the house. turning overseas, it's not getting any easier for british prime minister theresa may now that she survived a challenge to her leadership. may won a no confidence vote yesterday but more than 1/3 of her fellow conservatives voted against her. that vote means she will continue guiding britain through its exit from the european union. today may meets with eu leaders in brussels. she's hoping for some changes in the terms of the brexit deal but those leaders say that's not happening. and also in europe we're learning more about the suspected gunman in france who is still at large after his attack on that christmas market. officials say he's been convicted 27 times in his life,

mostly for crimes in france, but also in switzerland and neighboring germany. now the lights of the eiffel tower there in paris dimmed last night yet again to honor the victims of this attack. abc's ian pannell has more from strasbourg where the attack took place. >> reporter: hundreds of french police and soldiers are in an all-out hunt for one man, cherif chekatt, the 29-year-old career criminal suspected of carrying out the deadly attack here at the strasbourg christmas market. police seizing evidence from his apartment and searching cars at the nearby german border. chekatt escaped in a taxi. he was wounded in the arm by soldiers but he told the driver he just shot people. one eyewitness used this phrase there were really a lot of gunshots, like it was so loud. we now know that two people were killed, a third is tragically brain dead. chekatt wasn't just known to the police, he was on a terror watch list.

>> reporter: we see them time and again during the holidays, those package bandits swiping boxes right off your doorstep. just this monday, police say these two woman pulled up to a tampa home, stole the packages and drove off. sometimes police get lucky, recovering piles of pilfered packages. now police are taking action. one police department in new jersey is launching a high tech effort to take on thieves. >> these are the locations where the gps devices are being deployed right now. >> reporter: they gave us a look of their undercover sting, putting gps tracking device inside packages. this is an undercover officer showing us how he would deliver one of these bait packages. you just started this program and you said within the first eight minutes? >> yeah, this morning the detectives deployed this. within eight minutes we had movement on one of the devices. we swooped in and made the arrest with big smiles on our face.

with dirt on their faces, a man and two women were found and brought out of the abandoned mine last night. they were underground since early saturday. their families admit they entered the mine seeking copper wire to sell. crews used giant fans to blow fresh air inside the mine which allowed rescuers to find them. west virginia's governor was there for the emotional reunions. >> it's a christmas blessing. that's all there is to it. i grew up playing in a coal bin with grandparents that didn't have indoor plumbing, and these people are the salt of the earth. and, you know, so being with them was an honor to me. >> a fourth person made his way out of the mine on monday night. he told rescuers the location of the others. they may still face charges for illegally entering the mine. breaking overnight, a high-speed passenger train crash in turkey leaves at least four people dead and more than 40 others injured. it happened in the capital city of ankara. officials say the train slammed into a work train and then hit an overpass, causing it to partially collapse.

reports say at least two cars of the passenger train derailed. crews pulled survivors from the wreckage. an investigation is under way. a civilian pilot taking part in an air national guard exercise in hawaii is in serious condition this morning after a crash at sea, and it was all captured on camera. watch carefully here as the plane gets closer and closer to the water just off the southern coast of oahu. now the pilot ejected from the vintage hawker hunter fighter jet. he was picked up by a sailboat but was hospitalized with his injuries. the 1950s era plane sank immediately. the company that operates the plane has a fairly poor safety record. new details are emerging about the man who is suspected of attacking the christmas market in strasbourg, france, near the german border. 29-year-old cherif chekatt was born in that city. officials say he was radicalized while in prison there. he's been convicted 27 times, mostly in france but also in switzerland and germany.
