working around the clock tirelessly trying to find them. >> david kerley is there on the scene in charleston, west virginia, for us. david, good morning. we know those three were taken to the hospital after the rescue. what are hearing about their conditions now? >> reporter: they're doing well, robin, in fact, all three of them checked themselves out of this hospital a couple of hours ago and went home. for this small mining community the fears of the worst turned into cheers for the best possible outcome. overnight, we talked to two of those who were rescued about how they survived. tears of joy in this small west virginia mining town, families reuniting with their loved ones, they weren't sure they'd ever see again. but overnight, all three were safely rescued from that abandoned mine all still alive. >> we panicked sometimes, then we'd pray a lot. >> reporter: a happy ending in the race against the clock which lasted 4 1/2 days.

>> thank you. >> reporter: the two women and a man had broken into the mine with another male friend early saturday morning. trapped in the cold, muddy conditions with little oxygen and no light. >> what was it like in there? >> it was terrible. >> we drank mine water. we had no food. we just found a stream in the mine and just started drinking and hoping, praying to god it was not contaminated. >> reporter: the rescue didn't come easy. empty oxygen tanks slowing the rescue crews as they searched over the past few days but never losing hope. by blowing air into the massive mine with large fans, those rescue crews were then able to work without breathing apparatus >> we go into these events not to recover, we go to rescue. >> reporter: the three were to be taken to the hospital in charleston but on the way the motorcade of ambulances stopped at the community center for that amazing reunion. >> this is an outcome that i really truly in my heart didn't think would happen.

>> reporter: and while they could face criminal charges for entering the mine illegally in search of copper wire, family members say that is for another day. a community grateful they're all alive. >> this is a christmas miracle. >> we love you. >> reporter: a wonderful outcome but state officials here saying more needs to be done to keep people out of these abandoned mines trying to steal copper wire. but i got to tell you, george, we ended up driving behind that did at the community center and to watch them jump out and be embraced by family it was hard not to get caught up in that joy. >> no reason not to get caught up in the joy. david, thanks very much. to the fallout from the sentencing of michael cohen. the president's former lawyer and fixer heading to prison for three years and in an emotional statement to the court he apologized for covering up trump's dirty deeds. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has the story. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. this is the man who famously

said he would take a bullet for president trump. now he says of those crimes that he committed, he did it all for his former boss. this morning, president trump is breaking his silence, tweeting about his longtime fixer, saying i never directed michael cohen to break the law. he was a lawyer and he's supposed to know the law. in his emotional apology to the court, cohen pointed directly at president trump saying, it was my own weakness and a blind loyalty to this man that led me to choose a path of darkness over light. time and time again, cohen said, i felt it was my duty to cover up for his dirty deeds. cohen sentenced to three years in prison. prosecutors say cohen acted in coordination with trump when, in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, he arranged hush money to porn star stormy daniels and playmate karen mcdougal to keep them quiet about alleged affairs. in court cohen took full responsibility for his crimes, quote, the personal ones and those involving the president of

the united states. and just hours after that sentencing another bombshell, the u.s. attorney's office announced a cooperation agreement with ami, the company that publishes "the national enquirer." prosecutors say just two months after trump announced he was running for president, he met with "enquirer's" ceo and publisher david pecker and michael cohen, and according to just-released court documents, pecker offered to help deal with negative stories about the presidential candidate's relationships with women, and he did. according to those documents, it was at the direction of one or more members of the trump campaign in order to influence the election. now, cohen will be housed in a medium security prison outside -- not too far from new york city. this is the prison where he requested to serve out that three-year sentence. he starts that sentence on march 6th, george. he also has to pay nearly $2 million in fines. >> that's right. he says he will continue to cooperate with prosecutors. okay, cecilia, thanks very much.

>> we're going to have more on this story in the next half-hour. michael. now to that new interview with first lady melania trump overnight. attacking people she calls opportunists and opening up about her husband's tone and his tweets. abc's linsey davis has more on that. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, michael. first lady melania trump says she does what she believes is the right thing despite potential backlash and she also expresses her opinions to her husband and sometimes he listens and sometimes he doesn't. melania trump making some history becoming the first first lady to ever fly in an osprey military aircraft as she ventured to hampton, virginia, for a meet and greet with military families. >> holidays are coming. not many of them will be with their families, so for me it's very important to show them that the president and i and the country, we are behind them. >> reporter: mrs. trump then sat down with fox news where she opened up in a rare television interview about life with her

husband, the president. >> i know exactly what's going on. i follow what's going on, and i give my husband advice and my honest opinion, and sometimes he listens and sometimes he doesn't. i don't agree with his tone sometimes and i tell him that, so as i said before, sometimes he listens, sometimes he doesn't. >> have you ever stopped him like he was going to say something and you said -- >> i said to him, you know, i don't think you need to be that out but on the end it's his decision. he knows the consequences. he is an adult and, you know, but he's a fighter. >> reporter: when asked about her husband running for a second term, she refused to say whether he would or not. >> i think my husband, he's doing an incredible job. the country does best ever, so, yes, i think -- i want the country continue to do well. >> when asked what the hardest thing is that she's had to deal

with she said, opportunists using my name or my family name to advance themselves from comedians to journalists to book writers. she then added that it doesn't hurt, the problem is that they're writing the history and it's not correct, but over and over again she remains true to herself, she says. we're going to turn now to breaking news overnight here in new york. you're looking live at the scene of a massive fire in queens this morning that injured at least 11 people, six of them firefighters. more than 150 firefighters were there on the scene to battle the flames and to help families evacuate. the cause of the fire is under investigation. and more breaking news overnight, a pilot in serious condition after his military jet crashed off the coast of honolulu. it was all caught on camera and martha raddatz has the latest. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. the plane went down just west of honolulu. an area packed with tourists with some recording the crash and others racing to the rescue.

new video overnight shows the 1950s-era fighter jet part of a military exercise heading straight for the water. you can see the 47-year-old contractor ejecting just before the plane hits. nearby boaters jumping in to help. >> i was seeing if he was okay, if anything was hurting, and then he was like, no, he's like, i'm just tangled in my parachute so i started untangling him from his parachute. >> reporter: the coast guard arrived quickly afterward. the jet was being used as part of a hawaii air national guard exercise. the military often hires contractors to simulate enemy fighters in these exercises which have now been suspended. those exercises will resume later today. this is the private contracting firm's fourth crash of this type of aircraft since 2012. two of which were fatal. this pilot lucky to be alive, robin. >> very much so, okay, martha. thank you. now to that breaking news overseas.

a deadly train crash in turkey, a high-speed train slamming into a railway engine in ankara, hitting an overpass, killing at least nine, injuring more than 40 others. rescue crews on the scene searching for survivors saving those that were trapped. according to the turkish news reports, three railway employees have been detained. the cause of the crash is under investigation. and the latest now on that international manhunt that is under way for the gunman behind that deadly terror attack at a christmas market in france. police are searching for this 29-year-old believed to have escaped the scene in a cab. ian pannell is at the market in france with the latest and, ian, officials now think the gunman may be in germany? >> reporter: yeah, that's right, robin, good morning. unconfirmed reports in french media suggesting that there is an operation under way in germany. no further details on that at the moment. also, we just heard tragically one other person has died as a result of injuries sustained in that attack so now that means three people are dead, one is

gravely ill, others are receiving treatment. and as you say we're getting more details on the alleged attacker cherif chekatt. we now know he was born and raised in france, radicalized in prison in the very same city that he launched that attack, and like so many other incidents we've seen, it's not about insiders coming in but of homegrown terrorism and that makes it much hard story detect and to prevent. michael. >> all right, definitely makes it a lot harder. ian, thank you so much. and we're going to turn now to that dangerous storm that is on the move this morning. millions at this hour on alert from the rockies to north carolina and, of course, ginger is tracking the storm and she has the latest on its path. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this is not what you want to see, especially in salt lake city. everybody getting around, getting the holiday shopping done, and at least 250 incidents and accidents related to the weather with the low that came through there. the cold front caused interstate 70 to look like this in vail. then you go to where it moves

today. who's going to see roads like that? abilene, texas, haskell, texas, up to 3 inches of snow. severe storms possible that include shreveport, tyler, texas, and tomorrow severe storms for orlando or satellite beach from jackson to tampa. flash flooding possible on friday, raleigh, wilmington, all the areas hit by florence, all in that 2-inch to 4-inch range. we'll be tracking this one through the weekend, george. >> it is a wet map. we'll get the latest now on the search for that missing mom. it marks three weeks since she disappeared and we're learning more about her past as a distraught friend holds out hope for her return. clayton sandell is tracking the case from colorado. good morning, clayton. >> reporter: good morning, george. right now police are desperately searching for kelsey berreth and as you mentioned she's been missing for three weeks, since thanksgiving, and they're looking for any clues that bring her home. this morning, family and friends are holding out hope after this last known sighting of kelsey berreth thanksgiving day.

>> we still have hope but miracles don't always happen. >> reporter: family and friends say she is fun-loving and kind growing up on a farm in washington state and moving to colorado to chase her career as a pilot. >> there's a lot of pain inside that goes with it and i know if i feel that way how they must feel. >> reporter: berreth is engaged to patrick frazee. the couple has a 1-year-old daughter. police say frazee was the last person to see berreth, through his lawyer saying he's cooperating and hopes and prays for ms. berreth's return. frazee was a no-show at monday's press conference but his attorney says mr. frazee was first notified approximately an hour prior and given more notice he would have participated. >> there's got to be somebody that saw something go on there and if they would get in contact with the police department and just -- so they can get to the bottom of this and we can find kelsey. >> reporter: his lawyers says he doesn't want to speak publicly as to not interfere with the investigation. there will be a vigil here

tonight in woodland park. robin. >> all right, clayton, thank you. now to that emotional reunion between a little boy and a texas police officer who saved his life, catching him as he jumped out of a burning building. janai norman is here with more on that. good morning, janai. >> reporter: robin, good morning. it was so emotional, that 8-year-old boy tearfully telling the police officer he wouldn't be here without him and the officer calling that little boy brave for what he did, jumping out of a building with no time to spare. a heroic rescue of an 8-year-old boy named kingston trapped inside this burning apartment complex. >> i can't see. >> trapped up there? >> yeah. >> reporter: watch as police officers immediately spring into action. >> can we get in the door? >> reporter: using a baton to break a window, telling the little boy to jump. >> let's go, buddy. come on. >> reporter: you see officers below catching kingston as he jumps from the second story. firefighters then arrive and rescue his mom by ladder. >> i'm just grateful and thankful. i can't imagine -- you know, he's all i have in this world. i just -- i just -- i just don't know. i don't know what i would have

done. >> reporter: kingston reuniting with the officer who saved his life. >> if y'all wasn't there, i wouldn't be here. >> well, i'm glad i can be there for you, kingston. glad we could be there for you and we'll always be there for you. it took a lot of bravery jumping out of that window like you did. >> reporter: and kingston's mom says there were several angels on the ground there, talking about the officers who caught her son who she is also so thankful for. >> i bet she is. >> i love how the officer said you're a brave boy too. putting it back on him. that was great. nice touch. >> thanks, janai. now to a new warning for those of you who are planning to dazzle your neighbors with laser holiday lights. the faa says they pose a serious safety risk to aircraft and that each year pilots complain of being distracted or temporarily blinded by lasers and tell homeowners to make sure they're pointed at their houses and not into the sky. and if your display does affect the pilots, the faa says they'll ask you to fix the problem but

good morning, david. >> reporter: during the 2016 campaign the "enquirer" published stories that donald trump would use to attack his rivals and buried stories that might be detrimental to trump. the question now, how worried should the president be that the "enquirer" is now cooperating with prosecutors? inquiring minds want to know what sensational scoops might "the national enquirer" have that are of interest to federal prosecutors? >> they got o.j. they got edwards. they got this. i mean, if that was "the new york times" they would have gotten pulitzer prizes for their reporting. >> reporter: the publisher of trump's tabloid as it's been called is trump's friend david pecker. in that plea deal just made public, ami, the "enquirer's" parent company, admits to paying $150,000 to former "playboy" playmate karen mcdougal just three months before the election to kill her story about an alleged affair and, according to new details just released in the agreement, this was done at the request of the campaign to suppress the model's story so as to prevent it from influencing

the election. >> there were real feelings between the two of us. >> reporter: prosecutors also say pecker and ami tipped off trump's long-time lawyer michael cohen that porn star stormy daniels was about to go public about her alleged affair with trump. cohen pled guilty to paying her off. prosecutors say all of this was part of the plan the enquirer's publisher concocted with the candidate two months after trump announced he was running for president. >> it grew increasingly to the point where nothing negative was reported. >> reporter: nothing negative about trump that is, but the supermarket tabloid was vicious about trump's rivals. during the primaries the "enquirer" accused ted cruz's father of conspiring with lee harvey oswald to assassinate jfk and trump gleefully seized on the story. >> i have no idea whether it was right or not. they actually have a very good record of being right but i have absolutely no idea. >> reporter: it was not true. nor were any number of front

page exclamation points about hillary clinton, six months to live, hillary gains 103 pounds. hillary hitman tells all. >> the "enquirer" would be offered the most scandalous stories, and depending on the celebrities' friendship with david pecker, those stories would either see the light of day or they would be killed. >> reporter: despite its questionable tactics, the tabloid has been right on the money on other stories. it was the first to publish that infamous monkey business photo that ultimately brought down one-time democratic presidential hopeful gary hart and perhaps most significantly, back in 2008, the paper broke the story about democrat john edwards and his affair with rielle hunter, which eventually saw edwards stand trial for alleged campaign finance violations. well, in trump's case ami tells prosecutors it knew some of what it was doing was in violation of

campaign finance laws but they did it anyway, and this morning the ap reports that the enquirer actually kept a safe of damaging trump stories. what became of that safe and what secrets might have been inside it, you got to wonder, george. >> sure do. okay, david, thanks very much. let's bring in our chief legal analyst dan abrams for more on all this. this is kind of a classic rollup of a conspiracy. michael cohen cooperates and that puts "the national enquirer" and ami in the crosshairs. >> that's right, and they also become, though, potentially the critical corroborating witness in this context. remember, campaign finance laws are unique in the sense that they require you have to have known you were violating the law. it has to have been done on purpose. typically laws like manslaughter for example you don't have to have known the law to have broken it. when it comes to campaign finance, you do. you have michael cohen saying, look, i did this at the direction of and in the coordination with the president of the united states. that pretty much implicates the president.

now you've got ami also saying that it was done in coordination with the trump campaign, which is now another piece of evidence that could be problematic for the president. >> there is a little bit of a mystery there. they talk about unnamed people in the campaign. we don't know if that's president trump or president trump and somebody else, but we do know that this does create potential serious liability for president trump. >> no question. and the other question becomes, what else might ami know? and here's the danger, is robert mueller's investigation is very narrow. there is a very specific mandate there with regard to russia. the southern district of new york, which is investigating this particular crime, which is the one that made the guilty plea with michael cohen, doesn't stop when mueller stops. they're going to continue their work and they may decide, you know what, there's more here we found and other possible crimes. >> it is interesting they chose to reveal this yesterday when michael cohen is sentenced. that suggests at least that they are not done. >> well, there's no question that they're not done but, again, the southern district doesn't finish. i mean, we talk about mueller coming to an end at some point,

we are back with t we are back with that 15-year-old who police say fought off a suspected kidnapper while jogging in texas, and they believe she wasn't his only target, and amy is here with much more on this. good morning. >> that's right. unfortunately, guys, good morning, this is a story we are reporting on far too often. a young woman out for a run when she is attacked. now, fortunately, this story does not have that tragic ending because she did all the right things. this morning, 22-year-old steven salazar behind bars. investigators say he attacked a 15-year-old girl out for a jog last week in houston. this comes after several young women were attacked and murdered while jogging throughout the united states. police say the 15-year-old girl in houston is alive because she was able to fend him off after he stepped out of his truck and

wrapped his arms around her. she screamed for help and fought him off. when he fell to the ground she ran away and called 911. >> she did everything right to survive this. >> reporter: authorities asking the public for help and believe he may be responsible for attacking others, as well. >> we really are reaching out to the public. we need to find out, is this the first time he's done this? does he have a pattern of doing this? >> reporter: this summer 20-year-old mollie tibbetts attacked and killed while jogging in her rural iowa hometown. and in september, newly engaged tech executive wendy martinez fatally stabbed in the neck while on her evening jog through a trendy neighborhood in washington, d.c. but kelly herron was able to escape her attacker in 2017. >> as i was drying my hands, i became aware that something was wrong. >> reporter: her frantic struggle with her attacker captured in this photo from her gps.

she fought back using self-defense tactics she learned just three weeks earlier. >> i learned to put hard bones in soft fleshy places so i just started beating the side of his head with the side of my hand. i did a pretty good number on his face. >> reporter: now from the houston case, salazar is facing charges of attempted kidnapping as well as reckless driving. >> i'm so thankful this young woman is doing as well as she is. what can you do when you're out jogging? you are a big runner. >> i was out jogging in houston last week and i went to the concierge and said where is a safe place to run? if you don't know the area, you should ask someone who does. you should switch up your routine. if you're wearing those headphones, keep them low. and i do 360s. if i see somebody i'm passing them i kind of do a 360 and watch them and run backwards just to make sure you're aware of your surroundings. tell someone you trust where you're going. and that way someone can always be checking up on you. >> great advice. >> thank you, amy.

this groundbreaking decision. what's going on, lara? >> it's a big one. good morning, everybody. so, as the world changes in the me too era, you had to know the concept of a beauty pageant would continue to evolve and here we go. to many people the idea of men judging women doesn't work, so at miss universe level at least that will no longer happen. >> getting ready, baby. >> reporter: it's the worldwide pageant known for showcasing glitz, glamour and grace. >> south africa! >> reporter: but this morning, after 66 years, a groundbreaking change. the miss universe organization announcing that for the first time the judges who will select the upcoming queen -- >> what's the biggest change you'd like to see for young women? >> reporter: -- will be all female. former miss usa competitor and women's march co-founder janaye ingram said this when asked about the unprecedented change to the global competition. >> people have asked me why would miss universe go with an all-female selection committee.

loved ones they weren't sure they would ever see again. but overnight all three were safely rescued from that abandoned mine all still alive. >> we panicked sometimes then we'd pray a lot. >> reporter: a happy ending which lasted 4 1/2 days. >> thank you. >> reporter: the two women and a man had broken into the mine with another male friend early saturday morning. trapped in the cold, muddy conditions with little oxygen and no light. >> what was it like in there? >> it was terrible. >> we drank mine water. we had no food. we found a stream in the mine and started drinking it hoping and praying to god it was not contaminated. >> reporter: the rescue didn't come easy. empty oxygen tanks slowing the rescue crews as they searched over the past few days but never losing hope. >> we go into these events not to recover, we go to rescue. >> reporter: the three were to be taken to the hospital in charleston. on the way the motorcade of ambulances stopped at the

lessons she learned about saying good-bye. >> i could see that it opened her a little bit because my mother has been a very closed down person and i could see that the music gave me an opening to say what i needed to say and what i said was, thank you. >> reporter: over the years oprah and her mom have been honest about their strained relationship. but at the end, the daughter was right by her mother's side, offering forgiveness and support. >> as a young girl, having a baby in mississippi, no education, no training, no skills, 17, you get pregnant with this baby, lots of people would have told you to give that baby away. lots of people would have told you to abort that baby, and you didn't do that. and i know that was hard. and i want you to know that no matter what, i know that you always did the best you knew how to do. and look how it turned out.

iced in an hour all for a special organization, cookies for kids' cancer, which uses a simple bake sale to raise money to save young lives. this may look like just a regular bake sale but these people are baking cookies together to save lives. >> i know some kids have cancer so i like to help every single year. >> reporter: in the u.s. when it comes to children, cancer causes more deaths than any other disease and one nonprofit, cookies for kids' cancer, is fighting to end that. >> when my husband and i realized that it was funding that was getting in the way of developing new treatments, we knew we had to do something. >> reporter: the incredible organization started by gretchen in 2007 when her 2-year-old son liam witt was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. with the help of 250 volunteers they baked and sold 96,000 cookies, raising almost half a million dollars for cancer research. and while liam passed away after

a valiant fight in 2011, he lives on through each bake sale with more than 1 million cookies sold, nearly 9,000 events held across the globe and over 40 new life saving treatments for kids, that is one sweet legacy. it really is.
