. >> announcer: live where you livesh this is abc 7 news. an some news warning about the big waves forecast to hit bay area beaches this weekend. >> they may be impressive in size, but you could quickly find yourself in a life or death situation. i'm eric thomas. >> i am dion lim. we have team coverage tonight. drew tuma has the forecast. >> but we'll start with cornell barnard in san francisco. cornell? >> reporter: eric, dion, safety officials not pulling any punches, they are warning the public to stay away from san francisco beaches this weekend due to monster waves predicted this weekend. and we are seeing some sizable

waves crashing here at fort point tonight. we're trying not to get wet, but make no mistake, big waves are coming. waves were crashing near the pacific pier, the surf drawing a crowd of curious tourists. >> they're big already. >> reporter: neighbors are getting sandbags ready for waves which may break over the pacific seawall. but these waves are not even close to the monster waves officials say are coming to spots like ocean beach in the next 24 hours. >> at this time we're being told that these waives are going to be large enough to reach our see walls at ocean beach. >> if anyone is even stepping foot on the sand these waves could creep up onttheir chest, take them into the pacific ocean. >> reporter: the waves could top 40 feet. san francisco fire and safety officials warning people to stay off ocean beach, the warning now posted at this fire house on

geary. the national weather service tweeting this dire message. stay back from the ocean or risk certain death. joy andrews is heeding the warning. >> that's like a tsunami. it really could be. we better keep ourselves off the beach. >> reporter: the big wave warning goes double for dare double surfers. >> there's a very small number of people who can surf waves like that here at ocean beach. >> reporter: i asked if he'll try to surf tomorrow. he said no way, too risky. we are seeing some brave surfers near the golden gate bridge right now. sunday and monday, too stormy and dangerous even for the maverick surf competition. officials are looking at tuesday, wednesday or thursday as a possible day to hold the contest. san francisco fire department tells me that even spots like beach at crissy field could see larger waves than normal over the next 48 hours. so everyone urged to be ware and be careful. life in san francisco, cornell

barnard, abc 7 news. >> thank you very much, cornell. what's generating the big waves? >> let's get to the man with the answer, abc 7 meteorologist drew tuma. >> pretty strong storm that will move on shore tomorrow, alreadyic canning up our surf at this hour, even before that high surf warning goes into effect tomorrow morning. so wave heights right now anywhere from nine to 12 feet high at montre bay. so along the coastline, it's an active ocean current, but much larger waves are out in the ocean, 20 to 35 foot waves right now all being generated by this strong sandstorm system coming out of the gulf of alaska. the high surf warning goes into effect tomorrow, 20 to 40 feet waves, could see isolated waves higher than that. dangerous surfs and rip currents. we are tracking rain to finish out the weekend, we'll detail that all out in a few minutes. big waves are expected in the bay area this weekend, but

take a look at this from lake tahoe. the sheriff's office shot this vids late yesterday and the lake looks more like the pacific ocean. waves were estimated at four feet high. >> evacuations have been lifted. people were allowed back in starting at 9:00 this morning. they must have id or some proof of residencesy to be allowed back into the area. nonresidents will be allowed in tomorrow starting at 9:00 in the morning. the camp fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire on record in california history. 85 people died, and more than 14,000 homes were destroyed. well, because of what happened in paradise the town of moraga practiced evacuating ahead of a fire. this map shows the two cities side by side. similarities with only a few roads to get out. hundreds of residents took part

of the drill. drivers are being directed to evacuate and head towards highway 24. st. andrews drive was turned into an evacuate route. we've put together a guide of what to do if you need to prepare to evacuate because of a wildfire. go to our website at a abc7news.com. ryan zinke is stepping down, touring butte county is stepping down at the end of the year. he has been under fire and faces federal investigations into his travel. political activity, and possible conflicts of interest. abc 7 news spoke to san mateo congresswoman jackie speier who says it isn't a surprise. >> when the heat gets really hot, they find a way out. we need regulators who are independent and don't have an ax to grind and don't have a preconceived notion of what the

environmental protection agency should be or the department of interior. >> zinke played a crucial role in president trump's effort to roll back environmental regulations while promoting energy sources like coal and oil. the deadline for people to sign up for health care insurance through the affordable care act, if they want coverage starting january 1st, has been extended to next friday in california. but the future is now in doubt after a federal judge last night ruled that obamacare is unconstitutional. abc news reporter lanna zach tells us what's next. >> a stunning ruling by a federal judge in texas declares the individual mandate unconstitutional and the remaining provisions of the affordable care act invalid. >> it's a great ruling for our country. we'll be able to get great health care. we'll sit down with the democrats, with the supreme court upholds, we'll be sitting down with the democrats and we will get great health care for our people. >> reporter: the judge's decision which put it is health insurance of millions of people in jeopardy was handed down just

before the final day of sign-ups for obamacare. >> sign up for health insurance at health care.gov before the deadline on december 15th. do it right now. >> reporter: validating the signature for one president and another president quickly tweeted his approval. president trump writing now congress must pass a strong law that provides great health care and protects preexisting conditions. president trump and the republican led congress tried mull pl times to repeal and replace the law. but john mccain, with his now famous thumbs down vote kept the affordable care act alive. nancy pelosi blasted the court ruling saying the democrats will intervene in the process. her counterpart chuck schumer said the gop spent all last year pretending to support people in the preexisting conditions while quietly trying to remove that support in the courts. the law will remain in effect for now as the appeal process

continues. lanna zach, abc news, washington. in the east bay, the chp is investigating a possible case of road rage after someone shot at a car on interstate 680 last night. it may have begun with some sort of altercation in fremont and ended with the victim stopping in livermore. multiple gunshots were fired. friends of the victim tell abc 7 news the shooting was random and the victim is in his early 20s, but is expected to survive. the driver was not hurt. friends say they were traveling home to stockton from the san jose area after work. the chp has a partial description of the suspect and vehicle. in the south bay, at least one person is dead following multiple shootings in san jose overnight. officers responded just before 10:00 p.m. to what came in as a call for help with a fire near the alma expressway. when they arrived they found a man who had been shot and he died a short time later. the victim's name has not yet been released and no arrests have been made. well, second shooting

happened in south san jose just before 1:30 in the morning. officers found the victim on monterey road. the man had been shot once, but is expected to survive. no arrests have been made and they don't have a motive. it is not clear if the shootings are connected. it was a test of patience for those craving a ham burlger. the new restaurant that opened today that created a long line on the peninsula. a little later, a helping hand for those who need the most during the holidays, we are there as thousands of gifts are

a taste of the big apple has come to the bay area, shake shack has arrived. take a look at this line for the bay area's first shake shack location in palo alto. crowds waited for hours to get a taste of the iconic new york city burger joint. palo alto's location will be the first of several planned for the bay area. the menu is locally inspired with a burger called the golden state double which has two grass fed patties on a sweet potato bun. san francisco police teamed up with a community group to take hundreds of guns off the streets today. abc 7 news was south of market this morning with the sfpd and a group united playas. 244 guns were collected, seven assault type rifles, 45 shotguns, five homemade shotguns, 51 rifles, the rest were revolvers and semiautomatic pistols. it's an effort to make the

they collect next weekend. now your accuweather forecast with drew tuma. in accuweather today the clouds have been steadily increasing ahead of our next storm system that will bring us rain for the second half of our weekend. live doppler 7 right now giving you the active sweep. we are dry above, but widen out the picture and combine it with satellite, and you can see that storm system off our coastline, all of this cloud cover out in the pacific. this is a cold front that is going to swing through here on our sunday afternoon. and bring us a pretty good soaking of rain along with strong winds and that rough surf along our coastline. out there right now, though, we that is keeping temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s. so currently 60 in san francisco, we're at 61 in san jose, warmer that that in mountain view. so overnight tonight there could be a light shower in the north bay. otherwise, it's a lot of cloud cover overhead, and temperatures will be on the mild side. some 10 to 15 degrees above

average, so not too chilly overnight tonight, upper 40s to mid-50s ahead of our storm system. storm impact scale, this next storm is a moderate level 2 system working through on sunday, especially through the afternoon and evening. the key times will be around 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. when that rain and wind moves through. about half an inch to an inch of rain in most areas, those winds will pick up as well. and that rough and dangerous surf will continue along our coastline throughout the day on our sunday. so future weather late tonight could see an isolated sprinkle in the north bay. otherwise, it's really quiet overnight tonight. first thing sunday morning we begin to see the rain move on shore light at first around cloverdale and ukiah. it's in the afternoon that the system will get going. you see by lunchtime it's really the northern half of the viewing area. it looks like the south bay and inland at that time. you're dealing with cloud cover. but this front will just intensify by 3:00 there's that heavy rain in the north bay. by about 5:00, as the sun is going down, that's when i expect

that rain moving through the heart of the region approaching the south bay as well. and then by 8:00, 9:00, we're seeing that rain transition to the south bay to finish out the day on sunday. total rainfall with this storm system, a good estimate or a lot of us, half an inch to an inch of rain, probably a little bit higher than that in the north bay. where the storm system will linger longer. but that's one part of the storm. the winds is another part. by 1:00 the winds across the region racing out of the south 20 to 40 miles an hour. there you can see that cold front crossing the region by 4:00. and then behind the front sunday evening the winds are really going to calm down. so it's a windy and wet end to the weekend. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. rain, wind and waves on your sunday. and then we're dry, monday, some sunny breaks, and that dry pattern continues for the upcoming seven-day forecast. it looks like the rain we see tomorrow may be the last storm we see before christmas arrives in the following week ahead. >> that's good news. >> but it's going to get wet and
